Mount Irvine Bay Resort

Tobago, Caribbean

The hotel

Once a sugar and coconut plantation, this seemingly endless estate covers 18-acres of tropical gardens and a neighbouring golf course, which features distractingly beautiful sea views from every one of its 18 holes. Just by staying at Mount Irvine Bay Resort, you become a member of this exclusive and award-winning golf club, and enjoy reduced green fees. It’s one of the personal touches that make this private hideaway different from your average Caribbean resort. Sophisticated yet carefree, you can flit between its beach, large pool, five bars, and three restaurants, all at your leisure. But the waterfront is the hub of the resort, with surfers to watch, snorkelling to experience, and annual events like the Barefoot on the Beach New Year’s Eve parties and April’s Jazz on the Beach fringe festivities.

We arrived 15th March 2020. Almost immediately were being advised by UK and TT governments to make arrangements to fly home !! We had booked til 25th.We were flown home early which was a shame but understandable. The manager Alpha was excellent so helpful in sorting out our flights home. Excellent customer service skills. The hotel itself is lovely a little dated in places but it is 3 star and worth that.No hidden agendas, it is what it is and I would reccomend it.The main buildings are very good and as you enter it does have a wow factor. All the staff were friendly and very polite. When we arrived we were met by the duty receptionist. A lovely lady named Avion. She was so helpful and gave us the perfect Caribbean welcome. Just what you want on arrivall. I later saw her go out of her way to ensure a stranded German guest got of the island hours before the Country closed it's borders. Even though the trip was cut short we did have the best of the times. Read less

We stayed at the Mount Irvine resort from March 5-12 after a week at the Starfish. The hotel is nicely renovated, clean and the grounds are nice. We were in a cottage room that was large, clean, but lacking decor and chairs. There was a love seat and soft chair in the sun room that was too hot to sit in. Lots of channels on the TV including CBC and CITY tv from Canada. Some movie channels as well. The beach is downhill and across a busy road. They have a beach club that provides chairs and has 10 umbrellas. There is no easily accessible shower or foot rinse unless you ask an attendant. If you swim before they open you have to go to the pool to rinse at a shower that I didn't know existed until half way through the week. They lock the gate access to the beach at 6 pm ( before sunset) with a padlock. They would do the guests a great service if they provided keycard access or a combination lock to the guests or a buzzer. It forced us to walk much farther on a dark road to get reasonably priced meals and drinks at local restaurant, risking our safety. The hotel did not provide drinking water. We walked several kilometres to buy some bottled water. There was no water offered at breakfast. The servers at breakfast seem miserable and unpleasant. We waited 20 minutes for coffee once and almost felt like we were intruders instead of guests. The hotel had their first happy Hour on Friday 2 for one drinks. No snacks provided, not even peanuts. We found out after a while there was a Happy Hour menu. Many items were not available. My wife ordered plain chicken wings. They came with sauce. I ate them to not waste them. 2 were raw inside. The replacements were all raw inside. The waitress did not even bring napkins with finger food. We did not pay for the wings. I missed breakfast one morning due to an early pick up for diving. They would not give me a dining credit. The phone in the room did not work, AC is loud and blows at the bed and drowns out TV. We asked about a meal plan when we checked in and we're told there was not one. On our last evening, Tom, the marketing manager said there is one. We never ate dinner or lunch there because food and drinks were overpriced. There is no shade at the pool in the afternoon ( never used it). Most of the reception staff were nice and helpful, but some seemed snotty. The hotel description says that it is between the best snorkelling reefs on the island. The reefs are in rough shape, unfortunately, but I did see a turtle, eel and puffer fish among others. Overall it's a nice hotel but could use better staff and fix some little details. Read less

We stayed here last month and enjoyed two relaxing weeks. Although there has been some modernisation there is an old world charm about the place. Some of the fittings in our room were old and worn but all worked once we found the "knack". As some other reviews mention they have a number of "star" members of staff who they should be very poud of - Daniel the bar tender, Denise the breakfast chef and Andrew looking after the loungers, etc on the beach. They particularly seemed genuinely pleased to help the guests. The pool was good as were the beach facilities. The one thing that let it down though was the evening restuarant - lovely setting, but only ever less than half of the menu available, (we felt sorry for the serving staff). Had we known we would not have booked half board. Locally, we would thoroughly recommend The Fish Pot and The Seahorse - both walkable from the hotel so long as you have a torch. Read less
