Mount Irvine Bay Resort

Tobago, Caribbean

The hotel

Once a sugar and coconut plantation, this seemingly endless estate covers 18-acres of tropical gardens and a neighbouring golf course, which features distractingly beautiful sea views from every one of its 18 holes. Just by staying at Mount Irvine Bay Resort, you become a member of this exclusive and award-winning golf club, and enjoy reduced green fees. It’s one of the personal touches that make this private hideaway different from your average Caribbean resort. Sophisticated yet carefree, you can flit between its beach, large pool, five bars, and three restaurants, all at your leisure. But the waterfront is the hub of the resort, with surfers to watch, snorkelling to experience, and annual events like the Barefoot on the Beach New Year’s Eve parties and April’s Jazz on the Beach fringe festivities.

Of course the location is great as you can follow the path, cross the road and you are at the lovely Mount Irvine beach. A few minor problems- difficulty getting pool towels, we only got on our last day and our air conditioning unit made a funny noise. These were minor inconveniences though. My son practically lived in the pool. He enjoyed it so much that he made me promise that we would return for a longer time the following Christmas. All in all we enjoyed our stay. Read less

This is our third visit to Mount Irvine and it has become our home away from home in Tobago. This is our third visit to Mount Irvine and it has become our home away from home in Tobago. This is the exact opposite of a busy all inclusive, so if your are craving drinking competitions on the Lido Deck, look elsewhere. This hotel is quiet - blissfully so. I start my days here walking to the beautiful Mount Irvine beach club at dawn, to find locals enjoying the gentle surf - you can strike up conversations with people here if you like (this morning i found out about where a man got his new puppy) and again, it feels the exact opposite of most resorts where you only see other tourists. I wander back to the hotel past a giant "Tree of Life" and head to the breakfast buffet where i eat my fill of papaya and other fresh fruit. Try making a bacon sandwich with freshly made coconut bake - delicious. For lunch, the jerk chicken is incredible but if you are watching calories the Mount Irvine salad is fantastic too. I am an avid swimmer and love the pool here - long enough for proper laps and just glorious for an evening dip under the stars. Worth noting that the hotel has the best golf course in Tobago and my husband will be golfing tomorrow. This hotel is 5 minutes from the town of Buccoo with its famous "Sunday School" street party - not to be missed. I noticed that in other reviews some people comment that it is TOO quiet but for me tranquility is a giant plus, the subtle outdoor lighting which allows you to see the stars at night is just perfect and this is a place where in a busy, hectic world you can get the most divine sleeps. The fact that it is owned by a lovely Trinidadian woman and that the staff bend over backward to make sure you have a great time are just icing on this lovely, quiet, restful cake. Read less

If a review could focus solely on how helpful the staff were then it would be an easy 5 stars. However when taking the whole experience into account it can only be 4 stars. The main issue would have to be the pool. With loose cement around the pool edge and dislodged tiles as well as sand on the pool floor it is in urgent need of refurbishment. There were some other issues with the room that were minor but the overall view was that the room was tired and needed some tlc. The food was good, breakfast being the winner, and the beach bar the loser with having nice food but taking 45 minutes as it has to be cooked up at the hotel amd taken down to the beach. Overall it was a nice enjoyable stay and we would go back again, but after the pool is sorted. Read less

The rooms are spacious, the beds are big, the shower is hot, breakfast is plentiful, and the service is impeccable. The hotel is in a quiet area, with lush grounds, swimming pool, bar, and amazing beach with sun beds, water sports centre and a beach bar. We walked to a nearby beach grill bar, Anchor Inn, a few times for lunch and drinks, and to Buccoo and Black Rock for dinners, and had dinners in the hotel restaurant a few times. We went diving with Undersea Tobago which was brilliant, and went rainforest hiking and visited Argyle Waterfalls with Peter Cox Wildlife Tours, to play Tarzan and Robinson Crusoe for a day. But most of the time we just snorkel, swam, drunk rum punches and had the most relaxing time. Absolutely brilliant holiday. Read less

Mount Irvine is in a lovely location built in 1972 and recently renovated is beautiful. Public areas are well kept and lots of space. Bedrooms, we were located in an old block that was tired the bathtub stained and lighting poor with an old noisy air con unit. However, the room was overall clean and well maintained. The team, on the whole, are friendly which is a plus for Tobago; international travellers are still a bit of enigma as far as I can see, with lots of Trinidadians on short breaks who seem happy with poor service. Facilities in the hotel, it seemed like the resort was closed, NO music anywhere in public areas the main bar closed most of the time, the Hummingbird cafe closed, the Beach bar looked like it had been in a tropical storm and served only beer once it finally opened at about 2 pm in time for rain!!. The main Sugar reef restaurant was lovely for breakfast but this was closed after three days and residents were moved to a stain covered Banqueting suite with net curtains (think an old projector screen half up on the stage and you get the vibe) and no music.
