Sheraton Sand Key Resort

Clearwater, Clearwater & St Pete

The hotel

Sand Key has been voted in the top 10 US beaches and with California, Hawaii and the rest of Florida in competition, that's no small boast. The hotel is right on that glorious white sand. It is an attractive, well-run and well-equipped resort, with a selection of eateries. Rusty's provides wonderful breakfasts and gourmet dinners. There's plenty of daily specials and tasty treats including a fresh soup and salad bar in the Island Grill, and you'll always find a good atmosphere and drinks specials in the Mainstay Tavern. Just across the road are the Shoppes of Sand Key, an area that includes more great restaurants to try.

This review is late because I gave the company a chance to respond to this issues directly. They have since told me that they have no intention on fixing these issues so I am leaving a review so others may consider their options carefully. We had two rooms reserved at Sheraton Sand Key for the night to celebrate the New Year and had chosen this particular hotel due to it's proximity to the fireworks. We normally stay at a Marriott and this was our first time staying at one of Marriott's other properties. I will be honest and say I will never stay at this Sheraton again. Upon check-in, I was acknowledged by a female employee who I'm sure debated the need for a paycheck before arriving for her shift as she seemed to hate being there and was very unpleasant. Other employees I encountered were also rude with the exception of the ladies in the small gift/snack shop. They were incredibly sweet and should be recognized as such. Issues we had were related to our room included the smell of both rooms was very strong and disgusting...much different then the hallway. Imagine someone spraying the room with a can of Febreeze to cover the smell of dirty carpets and mop water. It honestly made it hard to breath. The comforters in both rooms had multiple stains as did the curtains. We got rooms with a view of the roof which was not an issue except it was littered with peoples clothes and debris. Another issue was the very large college group that made it impossible to access amenities such as the hot tub, fireplace, ect.. (and the fact that they kept gathering in groups and constantly screaming, like having competitions, seriously). I'm just very disappointed and to be honest it ruined our family holiday. Next year we will stay across the street at the actual Marriott. I am more upset at the company's response to these issues more then anything, as I understand things happen. I had originally taken pictures of all of this too and I feel if I still had them the response would have been different. Read less

I spend +100 nights in hotels a year and I am Titanium Elite for life with Marriott. This is my review while staying at this property and after communicating with them prior our arrival. First of all, the location is nice, right in the beach and with a beautiful sunset. It could be really nice... but it isn’t. 1) We were not well greeted upon checking in. The man who checked us in lacked any kind of hospitality and was rather rude. 2) The Hotel is worn down and tired. Low ceilings, dark but at least it doesn’t smell from mold. 3) The restaurants are all shielded from the sunlight. Not one window despite the excellent location right on the beach. If you don’t like burgers and wings, there is really only one restaurant called Rusty’s. It is big, empty and dark. 4) knowing it is spring brake, I requested a high floor to have a silent room. I was given a mid level room right above the entire hotels AC system. It is LOUD, ugly and probably the worst view I had besides a hotel in Paris where I was looking into a wall 3’ from my window. So it is not worth the effort requesting anything special, even if you have top loyalty status, the bookings staff will not listen and what made me sad is they didn’t seem to care. 5) The lounge has one highlight that I will bring out first. The two ladies who were there on Sunday night. They were very sweet and caring, worked hard to keep the spread on a good level despite the enormous level of people in there. I left after the first as it was over packed, but they gave me coupons to use elsewhere and asked me to come back later if possible. I did and they had a full plate of crab claws sitting in ice and fresh spring rolls in a tub next to it. Now to the negative part from this morning: the lounge, which is located on the top floor, (9),faces the parking and inland, not the ocean. It is not a cosy and calming retreat for anybody traveling for business. It is a room with an estimated 6-7 tables with chairs. It looks like you can hose it down in the evening to clean it, which may be a good thing around spring brake. People were running in and out of there, the door open and a noise level that was horrible. The worst part... as I had no place to sit, I put some fruit on a plate, made a coffee and grabbed a croissant. The woman working then lounge stopped me and yelled at me with all the people around not to try to take plates out of the lounge. I don’t think that has ever happened to me in over an estimated 2,000 hotel stays in my life, (I have close to 1,000 with Marriott alone and I travel a lot in Europe where they are not well represented). The man and woman in front of me walked out with their plates, but I was forcefully stopped and told if I had any complaints I should take it up with the front desk as it was not her fault...? Really, she was not in charge of her own behavior..? As a suggestion from a business leader with an interest in keeping my customers happy; instead she could have asked if I please could use paper cups or if I wouldn’t mind bringing the plate back to her. I handed her my plate and walked out, what could I do, there was no place to sit and I had a conference call to attend to. So now I’m back in my noisy room with a cappuccino from a machine that somehow sweetens it although I didn’t want that and a stale croissant from yesterday. In 30 years of traveling I have never stayed in a place like this. I have stayed in anything from simple pensions and youth hostels to five star Ritz Carlton’s around the world, but never been treated this way. Needless to say, I will never come back. I also want to make sure I state this is not a complaint against Marriott as an organization, I didn’t get to Titanium Elite for life because of incidents like this. Maybe the latest acquisition hasn’t really been integrated yet. Marriott # 554734616 Read less

Our first visit and will happily come back. Super friendly and helpful staff throughout the property. Lots of activities onsite including tennis, billiards, hammocks, and other beach games. Great access to a terrific private beach. Nice heated pool. Clearly not a “new” property but well maintained and a fun place to stay. Highly recommended!!

We stayed here for a couple of days in between Spring Training days. We were upgraded to ocean view but otherwise room was very basic with a tiny bathroom. There were no issues with housekeeping. Executive lounge is excellent but extremely busy. It seemed like if you did not get there at the dot of when it opened you do not get a table. There was water and pop available throughout the day. The lounge staff were very attentive and kept everything well stocked. They were all great especially Erica who could not do enough. This hotel is right on a large beach and food at the restaurants was very reasonable. The parking lot was jammed but at least is free. Note though that the area roads are extremely congested and you should allow plenty of time to get where you are going. Read less

Went to Clearwater for a long weekend and stayed here. The staff was incredibly friendly. Our room was clean. The view of the beach was amazing. The hotel is close enough to the main part of town but still far enough away from the wilder part. We'll definitely be going back to this hotel
