We booked the Modern, as a family member who stayed some years ago highly recommended it. After booking & reading the recent reviews I was extremely nervous for our stay. I need not have worried we had a fantastic time! We arrived in the late morning & from the minute our taxi pulled up the staff were nothing but helpful, helping with our bags & checking us in. Our room wasn’t ready but the front of house staff called us as soon as it was ready, which was prior to the check in time & very much appreciated. We kept waiting for the timeshare pitches I had read so much about but they never came. We were only once asked if we were interested when purchasing a Pearl Harbour tour but when we explained we weren’t they weren’t pushy at all. The concierge was very helpful arranging our tour & showing us different options & prices. Our room was on the fourteenth floor & had a fantastic view, which was a bonus as we had only paid for a city view. There was a bit of the usual hallway noise but overall it was nice & quiet. The room was showing some signs of wear & tear but it was nothing major, the room was still comfortable, clean & nice. The bed was a little low & firm for our liking & we personally would have preferred a proper duvet instead of a sheet & thin blanket but each to their own & we still slept well enough. The air con was fantastic & we liked the big comfy chairs on the terrace. The house keeping were super efficient & the room was cleaned daily to a fantastic standard. Overall we were very happy in our room. The adults only pool was closed during our stay. The pool, bar & eatery area looked great. It was however pretty crowded, most days all of the shaded loungers were taken. This may have been due to one of the pool areas being closed & this didn’t bother us too much as the lagoon & Waikiki beach were only a short stroll away so we preferred to spend our time there. We had food & drinks at The Grove the day we arrived & while it was nice we did find it expensive, the cocktails were the most expensive we saw on the island at $14 so we preferred to explore other bars & eateries during our stay. All of the staff we encountered were very friendly, even in passing they all smiled & said hello. The location of the hotel was great & its an easy walk to Ala Moana, the beach & the town. There were towels, water & sunscreen available at the pool which were nice touches. We only saw the protesters for an hour on a Monday afternoon & it really didn’t bother us. Overall for what we paid I was happy with our stay & we had a great time. I would probably stay again :) Read less

Only choose The Modern as it had 2 pools, but they decided to close the adults pool but did not bother to notify guest prior and surely they would have known it was going to be closed for renovations and no apologies to guest. Also renovation drilling right in the middle of people enjoying what should be a relaxing day around the pool again nothing mentioned and no "here is a cocktail for your inconvenience" Only 3 staff members were lovely and really cared about the guest Monique by the pool and Mark and Matt at the study bar as for the rest pretty poor and considering they are all about tips, they need to lift the game! Also on departure no farewell no thanks for staying and visiting us, I can promise you we won't be back there are so many options in Honolulu.... Read less

We had checked out and therefore couldn't go back to our room to escape the loudspeakers and chanting. We were waiting to be offered some sort of compensation but the staff just carry on as if they are not there. That's when I discovered they are there every Monday and Friday afternoon for an hour. Our ears were ringing for the rest of the day. Such a shame it was sold to an off shore company. I'm sure it was a lovely boutique hotel originally. Read less

1. This place treats their workers terribly. I know this because the workers went on strike one of the mornings we were here. 2. We found a live bed bug on one of the beds in our room, and both of us had bites on our legs. What's worse--the management (On site manager and Diamond Resorts customer service) made me feel like I was being hysterical when asking for pretty reasonable accommodations and compensation. I asked who I could speak to in the corporate structure and he said TO SEND A LETTER BY MAIL to an address he gave me. They washed most of our clothes but couldn't get dry cleaning back in time for our flight the next day. So now i have to pay for that when I get back home (aside from the stress of preventing bed bugs from coming home with me). When I kept telling him how terribly they were treating us, the manager made it seem like HE was the victim too. ???? Does your office have bed bugs???? Don't stay here. Just don't. Read less

My first stay at the Modern was 2 years ago and was wonderful! How sad it wasn't the same hotel this time. Prior to our arrival, we called and spoke to one of the concierge team about pre-booking a Pearl Harbour tour, the concierge either had no interest in helping us, or had no idea what they were doing, as we had to leave it until we checked in. However when we went to organize the Pearl Harbour tour upon our arrival, the concierge that we spoke to in the foyer could not have been less interested, so we left it again. We tried again later that afternoon hoping to find someone more interested, for our third attempt we sat with Ashley who seemed to be much more knowledgeable, but we felt that Ashley's main interest was to railroaded us into the "information session about the hotel upgrade" promising gifts and discounts for attending. We attended at the allocated time and were asked to sit outside as there was no room in the waiting area. An hour later we were still waiting and when we inquired what was taking so long, it was obvious that we had been forgotten about. We were allowed to keep our "gifts" and at least we only wasted an hour and didn't have to listen to the sales pitch. We worked very hard for this holiday and we sure didn't want to waste time at a sales pitch for time share properties! When we checked in we were told that our room was not ready (this was OK as it was only about 9:30am) We were told that the room would be ready at about 12:00pm, which was also OK. We left our bags at the reception and went shopping for the morning. We finally got the call that the room was ready at 2:40pm. When we got to our room, we both noticed that the carpet felt very damp, maybe the carpet had just been cleaned?? but it was bit off putting. Later that day I also noticed that one of the complimentary bottles of water in the room had already been opened and it was about 3/4's full. As far a the room cleanliness - the 2 water glasses in our bathroom were filthy. I went to reception and asked for clean water glasses and a wine glass. 40 minutes later still no glasses, so my husband rang guest services and was told it was going to be another 10 minutes. The wine glasses eventually turned up but it took about an hour. Those 2 used wine glasses were never replaced with clean glasses and sat there for the rest of our stay. The water glasses in the bathroom were never replaced either. In our shower there was a quite a large section of the wall tiles that were covered in some kind of mould or staining, plus there was paint peeling above the shower in the same top corner. Not at all what we expected from the Modern. The hallway are so dark and dimly lit and the rooms are looking tired. We were also looking forward to using the Adults only pool area, only to see that it was closed for renovations, in the whole time we were there we never saw anyone actually working in the area, plus if this complete adults only pool area was not available for hotel guests to use at all, why were we charged the full hotel resort fee, if only 50% of the resort was not available. It would have been really good if someone had mentioned the planned pool area works to us when we booked the rooms, We understand that maintenance and upgrades need to happen, but surely for planned works you would be letting your guests know prior to them arriving, and at least offering some kind of compensation or a reduction in the resort fees. The other thing is, as other reviewers have mentioned, is that there is no kettle in the rooms. The location is the only positive and the memories of how The Modern used to be. To say that our stay was generally a disappointing one, is an understatement. Read less
