The Modern Honolulu

Honolulu, Oahu

The hotel

Where innovative design meets barefoot luxury, the The Modern Honolulu's understated elegance and service has earned acclaim for service and design. It's posh without being pretentious, chic without being overdone, luxurious, yet brilliantly laid back. Guest rooms are decorated in natural tones and rich woods, with spa-like bathrooms and full-sized windows overlooking the city, the yacht harbour and the Pacific Ocean. Amenities are world-class and include a full-service spa with a variety of tempting treatments and two gorgeous swimming pools — the Sunrise Pool surrounded by lush, green landscape and the adults-only Sunset Pool, elevated on the first level and surrounded by sand. Hidden behind a secret passage, as if tucked away in a castle, is the lobby bar offering signature cocktails and light, eclectic fare. Lunch can also be enjoyed at the Bar at Sunrise Pool, under a canopy of lush bougainvillea and hanging lanterns. There’s a bar down at the beach too, residing under tall graceful palms with lounge chairs set in the water — a wonderful place to kick back and relax.

I'm a Hawaii resident and have stayed here a few times before. Pre 2017 this hotel was awesome, hip, and the place to be! Ever since the new timeshare company has taken it over it has gone soooo downhill. If tripadvisor based the rating off reviews the past couple of years they would have 2/5, not 4.5/5. Not to mention they are trying to cut ties with the union so there are constantly protesters at the pool area. Do yourself a favor and sort reviews and pictures by recent! And do not stay here. The new hotels that have taken over as the "hip" spots are surfjack, laylow, or queen kapiolani. Read less

Poor experience across the board. New owners are a time share company. It's sad to see what has happened to this property. A night and day difference from our stay in 2014. Go elsewhere to experience hospitality because you won't find it here.

I'm rarely disappointed, and The Modern Honolulu is "almost there" in so many ways as a trendy boutique hotel, but in so many ways it fell short and repeatedly frustrated our stay. Negatives that frustrated us: 1. No room service. 2. No mini-fridge in room. 3. No bottle-opener in room. (Front desk first advised me to bring my beer bottle to… Read more
I'm rarely disappointed, and The Modern Honolulu is "almost there" in so many ways as a trendy boutique hotel, but in so many ways it fell short and repeatedly frustrated our stay. Negatives that frustrated us: 1. No room service. 2. No mini-fridge in room. 3. No bottle-opener in room. (Front desk first advised me to bring my beer bottle to the lobby bartender) 4. Room not cleaned after 1st night; bed still a mess. Upon calling Reception, was told housekeeping had left for day. 5. Noisy outside. Even from high up safely in our room, the popularity of the hotel's lobby-side bar, a trendy spot, contributed to a loud nightly experience echoing outside, including passing drunken characters off the Waikiki strip road. Not in control of hotel, its true, but irksome. Positives: 1. Pool, lounge deck and restaurant. Very chic, pool was very clean and great refreshing temperature. Service at the restaurant/bar was excellent, as was quality of the lunch and drinks. 2. Room: Chic minimal design, quality of bed linens and bathroom all very good. 3. Reception & Bellhops: Friendly and helpful attitude. Read less
Image of the Tripadvisor rating Not a five star hotel

I should have asked more questions about this hotel - we were charged a five star rate and stayed in a room that was the equivalent of a Best Western (and I've stayed in nicer BWs). There is no warning that the hotel is under a major renovation. There is no warning that they're going to try to sell you their version of a time share - and if… Read more
I should have asked more questions about this hotel - we were charged a five star rate and stayed in a room that was the equivalent of a Best Western (and I've stayed in nicer BWs). There is no warning that the hotel is under a major renovation. There is no warning that they're going to try to sell you their version of a time share - and if you've got $173,500 laying around it is a great deal to use points to travel all over the world. I did sit though the presentation and the people were very kind - but when I said I can't afford this and tried to walk away it was a little like being surrounded by an octopus. They were very nice - but weren't about to let me go without a fight. The 2.5 hours of presentation and saying no no no did get me some amazing discounts - so that was a good thing. The room we were in was not renovated - and was quite frankly run down - the carpet was dirty. The blackout curtain was stuck - it took me two days to get that fixed and then there was a giant wooden vertical blind that slid back and forth hampering the "partial ocean view" (we were supposed to have an OCEAN VIEW - not partial. The front desk and concierge were great - friendly knowledgeable and prompt, after I came back a second time to say the curtain is still broken. The bartenders at both bars were amazing - however the waitstaff was non-existent as far as I am concerned - I resigned myself to going to the bar for a drink - because they NEVER came to the table. If you are going to stay - and it is central to Waikiki and shopping etc - make sure you insist on a newly renovated room. I saw them - and they are beautiful - another carrot to get you to buy in to the timeshare. Read less

This was the worst hotel stay ever experienced in Waikiki, and I am a frequent Honolulu visitor having stayed at majority of the major hotels in the strip. First off, front desk agent had issues using the computer system checking me in and my check in took over 30 minutes!! She inputted the wrong card on file and I got double charged all my resort fees for the stay. The first day our room keys got deactivated without notice. The second day the second round of room keys got deactivated again. The same thing happened the third day in a row, it was a nightmare getting locked out of the room constantly and having to go downstairs to get new keys. Then the elevators had issues and waiting for the elevators took over 10-15 minutes at times. The wifi and internet connection was not strong and kept disconnecting as well. The only decent thing was the housekeeping but they ended up throwing out my portable utensils kit which I left on the table. Overall terrible experience and stay, the experience at the Modern was frustrating and ruined what was supposed to be a relaxing vacation. Do not recommend this hotel!! Stay at the Sheraton or any of the main hotels along the beach and spend the little extra it is much more worth it. Read less
