The hotel

Where innovative design meets barefoot luxury, the The Modern Honolulu's understated elegance and service has earned acclaim for service and design. It's posh without being pretentious, chic without being overdone, luxurious, yet brilliantly laid back. Guest rooms are decorated in natural tones and rich woods, with spa-like bathrooms and full-sized windows overlooking the city, the yacht harbour and the Pacific Ocean. Amenities are world-class and include a full-service spa with a variety of tempting treatments and two gorgeous swimming pools — the Sunrise Pool surrounded by lush, green landscape and the adults-only Sunset Pool, elevated on the first level and surrounded by sand. Hidden behind a secret passage, as if tucked away in a castle, is the lobby bar offering signature cocktails and light, eclectic fare. Lunch can also be enjoyed at the Bar at Sunrise Pool, under a canopy of lush bougainvillea and hanging lanterns. There’s a bar down at the beach too, residing under tall graceful palms with lounge chairs set in the water — a wonderful place to kick back and relax.

Good spot.. but no mention of the fact that there is no room service / cleaning service / paper cups only when booking. 500 usd a night .. asked to change the sheets and they were left out the door for us .. let people know that is what to expect..

This is the third and last time I’ll ever stay at the Modern HNL. The first time it was freshly remodeled, and we enjoyed it. The price was reasonable, the location was solid, and the rooms were fun. The second time, it was a little more beat up. The wooden vertical blinds in the bathroom were kind of falling apart, the balcony was dirty, and the cool bar adjacent to the lobby had closed permanently. The third time, the room was in even worse shape, and also our power outlets didn’t work. We were too tired to call for maintenance and didn’t feel like changing the rooms after finally settling in, or having maintenance staff in our room fiddling with things. But the thing that really bothered us was that we were immediately jumped on the moment we entered the hotel by very obnoxious, loud and aggressive timeshare sales people. They have their own desk in the lobby and they seem to have been instructed to not allow anyone to go to their room peacefully. We found ourselves racing through the lobby, taking care to avoid any eye contact as we made a beeline for the elevator every time we came and went from the hotel in order to avoid the predatory high-pressure salespeople stationed in the lobby. One of the women was blatantly patronizing and condescending also, telling my husband “it must be nice to just come to this island to go shopping. I have to work for my money!” after he told her that my mother had treated us to an overnight trip to Oahu (we live on big island) to buy dress clothes for his new job. For the sake of clarification, the people that work the front desk are lovely and helpful. They are separate from the timeshare salespeople. But… the exorbitant resort fees and parking fees in addition to the already nearly $300/night room rates for a basic room are pretty audacious. To add harassment based, predatory high pressure timeshare salespeople attacking you every time you come and go is absurd, inappropriate, and offensive. I live here in HI and this type of exploitative and gregarious “marketing” is the kind of thing that locals hate. We’ve seen enough overdevelopment already, and it’s one thing to pay over $100 over the posted room rate between local occupancy taxes, parking fees, and resort fees… but whatever, it is what it is, we just do it and make the most of it. But being relentlessly hounded (or watching it happen to other innocent unsuspecting people) by shrieking timeshare salespeople every time you walk through the lobby is where I draw the line. I’d rather sleep in my car. Read less

My wife and I stayed here from 4/29/22 to 5/3/22 (Room 814). Our room was broken into, and my wife's bag was stolen from our safe (that did not work). We believe it must've been a staff member. My wife and I stayed here from 4/29/22 to 5/3/22 (Room 814). Our room was broken into, and my wife's bag was stolen from our safe (that did not work). We believe it must've been a staff member. First off, we checked into our room on Friday, 4/29/22. After checking out our room and settling in, we locked up all of our valuables in the safe and the items stayed there when we're not using it. On our second day, after coming back from a day trip, we noticed that housekeeping never came to make our room. We asked the front desk and they told us that "due to covid, housekeeping will no longer make your room." This is odd for a hotel of this caliber, but it's not a big deal. This just means that we need to call in for towels/ toiletries and that no one will enter our room. Note that throughout the entire trip, we left all of our valuables in our safe and made sure it was locked at all times. One item, in particular, my wife's cross-body Chanel bag was kept in the safe the entire trip - she brought it with her to Hawaii, but didn't end up using it the entire trip. Fast forward to Sunday evening, I opened the safe to take out my watch, and the safe suddenly stopped working when I was trying to lock it. I thought it was odd, but didn't think much of it - I ended up closing the door to the safe and thinking to myself that it'll be ok since no one is entering our room. On Monday night, before dinner, I opened the safe again to put my watch away, took an inventory of all the items, and closed the safe like I did Sunday night. We had dinner, came back to our room, and slept. On Tuesday morning as we were packing, I open the closet and notice that the safe was slightly opened (not how I left it the night before) and quickly discovered my wife's bag is missing! We know we didn't use the bag the entire trip and it was there Monday night before dinner. We did what most people would do and we checked every nook and corner of the room, unpacked all of our belongings, and repacked every item and the bag was nowhere to be found. We called the front desk and sent security to our room to check the logs of who entered our room. They downloaded the data, but couldn't provide us with that information due to liability issues (seriously?!). All we needed was timestamps as to when the door was open and from there we can cross-reference it with logs on our phone. We're on vacation and are literally taking pictures throughout our day constantly, we can trace back and know exactly where we are at all times. But the hotel would not provide us with the log. WHY?! We ended up calling Honolulu PD and filed an official police report. The officer on duty checked the room and did not see any signs of force entry which means someone had a key to access our room. Note: we did not lose a single key card the entire trip - only the hotel staff would be able to enter our room. To this date, we're still unable to contact the hotel about this issue. Worst yet, after all of this, there was no compensation for our troubles. To be honest, I felt pretty violated by this whole experience. When you're traveling you want to feel safe, and relaxed, but after this ordeal, it was far from that. The hotel is not helpful and I can't believe this is how they treat their guests. Stay away!! Stayed for 2 nights here and the customer service and all the facilities were fantastic (mostly utilised the pool). Had no issues at all during our time here and all hotel staff were very warm and welcoming. Definitely would come back.

Stayed here for a few days. I was not expecting anything amazing but at the very least cleanliness which this hotel seriously lacks. The carpets in the room clearly are not regularly cleaned (how hard is it to run a vacuum through?), there was a heavy smell of mildew in my room which I think it was the sheets not being properly washed. The beds are uncomfortable, there is no comforter just a simple sheet on top and when you ask for an extra blanket they give you the thinnest most uncomfortable piece of fabric. The mats on the pool lounges are disgusting. Felt so uncomfortable the whole stay. The staff is really friendly and will do their best to accommodate but overall the experience here was poor. Very disappointed. You're better off staying anywhere else. Read less
