The Modern Honolulu

Honolulu, Oahu

The hotel

Where innovative design meets barefoot luxury, the The Modern Honolulu's understated elegance and service has earned acclaim for service and design. It's posh without being pretentious, chic without being overdone, luxurious, yet brilliantly laid back. Guest rooms are decorated in natural tones and rich woods, with spa-like bathrooms and full-sized windows overlooking the city, the yacht harbour and the Pacific Ocean. Amenities are world-class and include a full-service spa with a variety of tempting treatments and two gorgeous swimming pools — the Sunrise Pool surrounded by lush, green landscape and the adults-only Sunset Pool, elevated on the first level and surrounded by sand. Hidden behind a secret passage, as if tucked away in a castle, is the lobby bar offering signature cocktails and light, eclectic fare. Lunch can also be enjoyed at the Bar at Sunrise Pool, under a canopy of lush bougainvillea and hanging lanterns. There’s a bar down at the beach too, residing under tall graceful palms with lounge chairs set in the water — a wonderful place to kick back and relax.

I have requested our rooms to be close together as much as possible. My rooms were 12th floor and my other family members were on the 11th floor. They did a great job with room assignments this time. I will agree with the dark hallways (has been a long time issue) but I believe the property is working on refirbushing the common areas. My end of the 12th floor was redone and I am happy that is brighter. I will agree the resort fee is high but that is all of Hawaii. Location is ok, next to Lanikai and Hilton Hawaiian Village in the beginning of Waikiki. Super easy walk across the street for ABC Store and McDonalds for a quick bite and sundries. Because they kept their word with not asking me for an owners review and room allocation, I have given them a 5 star. Also if you like the Miami chic atmosphere without all the little kids running around, this maybe for you. Read less

Dim lighting in the halls. Asked for highest floor and got floor 3. Adult pool is 2 inches deep & Kids pool is normal size?! Grove food is average as best. Nightclub and study bar is closed (Covid). No housecleaning during whole trip (Covid) so 5 nights of sleeping in sweat. Have to ask for towels manually since no house cleaning. No late check… Read more

First the good stuff. Staff is friendly and helpful. Location is great. The pool is small but has a beautiful view. That’s all. Here’s the rest... The rooms have filthy carpets. The bed is rock hard. The facility is the opposite of modern. The walls are painted white and are dingy. The hotel hallways are dark and kinda scary. The building is old. Which makes the “Modern” hotel name an oxymoron. Here’s the even worst part ... the bathroom has blinds as windows. You can see smell and hear everything that goes on in the bathroom. Please understand me. It’s just gross. The pandemic says that they can’t clean the rooms. I think folks with extended stays should have their rooms switched instead of trying to do the housekeepers job. Save yourself some trouble. Stay somewhere else. Read less

I don't understand why this is a 5-star resort. This is nothing more than a fancy motel 6 with expensive resort fees. We were originally supposed to stay 9 nights. I don't understand why this is a 5-star resort. This is nothing more than a fancy motel 6 with expensive resort fees. We were originally supposed to stay 9 nights. We canceled our reservation on the day we arrived and found another hotel. We were on the 10th floor and the hallway was so dark and dirty looking. The room was very dirty. The bedding consisted of worn out pillows and only 2 thin bed sheets that had stains. The mattress was not comfortable and was placed on a platform frame close to the ground. The frames were all scratched up. The shower had mildew on the ceilings and the tiles were stained. The bathroom had shutters that opened to the bedroom. If you are there with family or friends, there is no privacy. Additionally, they told us they would still collect the $39 & some change resort fee, but will not provide any housekeeping. We stayed one night because we got there so late and it was so loud. There were young people yelling down the hallway and swearing. The walls are so thin. I called down and said we forgot a toothbrush and they said, sorry we don't have any. After I looked in the bathroom, I found a toothbrush in the room. The staff is not trained well at all and the hotel is not clean.Overall, if you are looking for a Sheraton type of experience, you will not find it here. Do your research, before booking this hotel, so you don't have the same experience. Read less

Our one bedroom had 2 balconies with amazing views of marina and ocean. The room was modern yet comfortable. There was a slight chemical smell probably due to some recent updating but we got used to it. Due to covid, there was no housekeeping to clean our rooms but they delivered anything we needed. Parking is not plentiful but luckily we were able to find a spot everyday. The 2 pools were nice, especially the adult only one. I would stay here again. Read less
