The hotel

Where innovative design meets barefoot luxury, the hotel promises a refreshingly new experience. The hotel's understated elegance and service has earned acclaim for service and design during its opening year. It's posh without being pretentious, chic without being overdone, luxurious, yet brilliantly laid back. Luxurious rooms are decorated in natural tones and rich woods with spa-like bathrooms and full-sized windows overlooking the city, the yacht harbour and the Pacific Ocean. Amenities are all world-class and include a full-service spa with a variety of tempting treatments. Fitness enthusiasts will love working out in the gym plus there’s a gorgeous swimming pool to splash about in, surrounded by lush, green landscape. To make sure you’re not only feeling but looking your best, join the hotel’s Surf and Bikini Boot Camp, guaranteed to whisk you into shape in double quick time! Hidden behind a secret passage, as if tucked away in a castle, is the lobby bar offering signature cocktails and light, eclectic fare. Lunch can also be enjoyed at the Bar at Sunrise Pool, under a canopy of lush bougainvillea and hanging lanterns. There’s a bar down at the beach too, residing under tall graceful palms with lounge chairs set in the water – a wonderful place to simply kick back and relax! For dinner, look no further than Morimoto serving delectable Japanese cuisine in a sophisticated atmosphere. Afterwards, enjoy a first-run film at the hotel’s very own outdoor movie screening or dance the night away at exclusive nightclub, Addiction.

The modern is a reasonable hotel that neighbours the hilton complex. Yes its nice, good service but its well over priced for what it is and the location. Recently stayed here, very quiet and fairly basic hotel accommodation, but new rooms will be very nice. Handy to bus and tram pickups and Ala Moana. Made very welcome and helped with trips and tours. Would recommend and some good eating places nearby.

Do not book her right now if you want peace and quiet! At least 3 times today, starting in the morning are protesters with bull horns. Making it very uncomfortable and awkward when you go to get your car. You can hear them from the rooms. Not the relaxing vacation I was hoping for!

We greatly enjoyed our stay at the The Modern Honolulu. It is ideally located (very close to a bus/trolley stop and near the Ala Moana Center) and has a very helpful, super friendly staff. Our room was very clean and comfortable. The food at the restaurant next to the pool was excellent with plentiful helpings, although at Waikiki prices. However, as others have noted, the hotel is in transition to a timeshare. We saw the new timeshare rooms and they are VERY nice so my comments below will probably not apply once the rooms have all be remodeled. Nevertheless in the interim, we had several nits concerning the hotel. There were two tiny trash cans in our room which we filled to overflowing every day. We had to call Guest Services several times to have them emptied since as a timeshare, the room was only serviced once during our seven-day stay. There are also no ice machines on any of the hotel floors. Consequently, when we wanted ice, we again needed to call Guest Services. In addition, the rooms do not come with a coffee maker unless requested (it does have a mini-refrigerator). We asked for a drip coffee maker but instead received a Keurig. While this is an acceptable replacement (at least for us), there was no place to buy K-cups nearby. Once again, we had to call Guest Services for additional K-cups. Since the hotel did not have the equivalent of a coffee shop (only the restaurant), each morning I would go across the street to the nearby ABC store to buy cups of coffee for my wife and me. I would like to emphasize that in all cases, Guest Services came to our room promptly- within ten minutes of our call. Still, we would have preferred to not have to make some many calls. Despite these nits, the next time I vacation on Oahu, I will be happy to return to the Modern Honolulu. Read less
