The hotel

Where innovative design meets barefoot luxury, the The Modern Honolulu's understated elegance and service has earned acclaim for service and design. It's posh without being pretentious, chic without being overdone, luxurious, yet brilliantly laid back. Guest rooms are decorated in natural tones and rich woods, with spa-like bathrooms and full-sized windows overlooking the city, the yacht harbour and the Pacific Ocean. Amenities are world-class and include a full-service spa with a variety of tempting treatments and two gorgeous swimming pools — the Sunrise Pool surrounded by lush, green landscape and the adults-only Sunset Pool, elevated on the first level and surrounded by sand. Hidden behind a secret passage, as if tucked away in a castle, is the lobby bar offering signature cocktails and light, eclectic fare. Lunch can also be enjoyed at the Bar at Sunrise Pool, under a canopy of lush bougainvillea and hanging lanterns. There’s a bar down at the beach too, residing under tall graceful palms with lounge chairs set in the water — a wonderful place to kick back and relax.

Promises of a text when the room was available did not eventuate. The assistant manager at Reception, Jordan, was rude and extremely unhelpful. Requests for items, (rollaway bed) had to be made numerous times. The sofa bed were my two children were to sleep was unmade, despite two requests for it to be made up, and we discovered at 10.30pm that it was broken and unable to be used. After an hour and a half of trying to sort some bedding for my children to sleep on, one of my children ending up sleeping on the floor. During that process one staff member told me they would bring up more rollaway beds, and after waiting 25 minutes, and ringing them back I was told I couldn't have any more rollaway beds in the room. Jordan then lied to me, by saying he had been ringing the room to let me know - when I had been sitting there waiting, and the phone didn't ring! The next day we had to check out of the room and be without a room for the day while they found us another one that we all could sleep in. Overall the whole experience was dreadful, with numerous other issues arising, and I would not recommend this Hotel to anyone. Read less

I would definitely suggest finding s different hotel. We asked for s room change after the first night due to the protests disturbing our sleep and at first the manager agreed and told us to pack our things so we could move. Then after we finish packing the manager said that the hotel was actually overbooked and we could not be moved. I don't understand why she made us spend an hour packing if this was the case. Just overall poor customer service from management although most of the staff was nice which is edgy they get 2 stars instead of one. Read less

If I could rate less I would. After arriving from a 15 hour flight @ 12pm on Friday we thought we would head straight to the hotel and proceed with checking-in. We were advised that they did not have our booking in there system, a booking that we booked 3 months ago for 14 nights paid in full. The gentlemen took our booking reference, passport & credit card and advised to return at 3pm and he will have it sorted out for us with our keys. We returned at 3pm to pick up our keys and were served by another lady whom once again couldn’t find our reservation and was confused with what to do as the hotel was apparently completely booked out. They finally found a room they could put us in for 6 nights and then we would need to move to another room after that. The following day we headed out and returned back to our room at 10PM to find that we couldn’t enter the room with the key anymore. We made contact with reception & they said they will send someone up to let us in. After a few minutes they sent two security guards (whom were lovely) to say they’ve disabled your cards and would like you to go down and talk to them due to a payment issue? So basically we were escorted like criminals because the “assistant manager” couldn’t do it himself. Then the assistant manager Jordan was hiding in the back office and tried to make another worker tell us that we need to get out of the room as the other room is available and they emailed us at 10am to get out by 12pm.... email? Seriously? We are on HOLIDAY’S, do you really think we are looking at our emails? A knock on our door would have been much better but instead they disable our cards, lock us out of our room, send security, hide behind doors and treat us like absolute crap. Rena some advice for you, if you want to continue being a manager... Make sure you actually TRANSFER the phone before laughing at somebody’s situation. No wonder your staff don’t know how to communicate with people, great role model. Take some responsibility & have some respect for your customers. We are supposed to be your ‘guests’. If you or your staff say something, that’s what should happen, not change your minds as you please and nobody takes accountability. We ended up leaving the hotel after 2 nights and booked another hotel. Room is nice. Location is OK however not ideal, quite far from the main areas. Downstairs nightclub annoying, especially when the elevators stop working. Service is horrible. Read less

A very nice hotel on the harbour side. Rooms were of a good size, modern and clean. Bathrooms looked as if they had just been redone. Breakfast in the restaurant by the side of the pool was great, with a good view of the harbour. A good base from which to explore the shops at the Mall and to hire a car for trips around the island.

My husband stayed here at the Modern for 2 nights and we loved it! We would come back here in a heart beat. We were lucky enough to book this through Hotwire and got a decent price. We have nothing bad to say about this hotel. We wished we stayed here for our entire trip but we opted to stay at a different hotel for a part of our trip and regretted it. All of the staff were friendly but the best part of this hotel has to be their room and pool. The room was sleek, spacious, comfortable and modern. The bed by far was the most comfortable hotel mattress we have ever slept on. Their outdoor pool was amazing!! We highly recommend staying here if this hotel is within your budget! Read less
