The Modern Honolulu

Honolulu, Oahu

The hotel

Where innovative design meets barefoot luxury, the The Modern Honolulu's understated elegance and service has earned acclaim for service and design. It's posh without being pretentious, chic without being overdone, luxurious, yet brilliantly laid back. Guest rooms are decorated in natural tones and rich woods, with spa-like bathrooms and full-sized windows overlooking the city, the yacht harbour and the Pacific Ocean. Amenities are world-class and include a full-service spa with a variety of tempting treatments and two gorgeous swimming pools — the Sunrise Pool surrounded by lush, green landscape and the adults-only Sunset Pool, elevated on the first level and surrounded by sand. Hidden behind a secret passage, as if tucked away in a castle, is the lobby bar offering signature cocktails and light, eclectic fare. Lunch can also be enjoyed at the Bar at Sunrise Pool, under a canopy of lush bougainvillea and hanging lanterns. There’s a bar down at the beach too, residing under tall graceful palms with lounge chairs set in the water — a wonderful place to kick back and relax.

The pool area is pretty and the rooms are bright white and fresh. The fitness room is well-equipped. There’s a spa but it was closed due to Covid. Downsides were no housekeeping during Covid, low hot water pressure on the 16th floor, weirdly dim hallway lighting, a coffee stain on the carpet in the room, and unimaginative restaurant food. Prices were good for this location and quality. Would definitely come back. Read less

Check-in at 4p is kind of insulting to start with. And check-out is at 10am. The Grab-n-Go restaurant was awful. Like how hard can it be to screw up a $17 chicken sandwich? There is no maid service during your stay. A big part of a resort experience is that you don't have to make your bed. So ,fail. But, you still get charged $40 daily resort fee.… Read more

There is no maid service during your stay. A big part of a resort experience is that you don't have to make your bed. So ,fail. But, you still get charged $40 daily resort fee. This includes 2 (two) bottles of water in your room. If you need ice, it is self-serve, but not on my floor. And I was dissuaded to get some because the ice bucket they give you is about 6oz max capacity.. If you call and ask for one more bottle of water, because all the bars are closed at 10pm. Forget it. Apparently, no one in the hotel can get you a bottle of water. The room was clean and had a nice view. There are many, many better options in Waikiki, especially now. The staff knew how to do it right with plenty smiles and aloha. Apparently, the management team at Diamond Resorts has made it impossible for them to the job, restricting them from doing any frontline guest service experience. Shame. Because this used to be a great property and has potential to be better. For now, I would avoid it, because Diamond Resorts, the corporation, does not know aloha. Read less

We stayed here last weekend of January and had a great time. Disclaimer..we got these nights free as we sat through a three hour time share presentstion a couple weeks prior. The hotel was EMPTY. I think there are more staff than guests right now. We had the pool to ourselves both mornings so my daughter played and she could laugh and yell (as a 4 year old does) as much as she wanted. The other times we've been here it's more of a young adults hangout so we may have been more self conscious. We also played in the adult pool upstairs since no one was there. The Grove restaurant is actually pretty good for a quick brrakfast. The staff was friendly. It's a semi self service style. There are some hot menu items and cold grand and go stuff. We ordered pancakes both mornings and they were really good. Usually hotel pancakes come out dry and chewy but these were actually moist and tender good. These are ricotta pancakes and better than Bills IMO and only $10. We had the entire restaurant to ourselves both mornings which was nice. No fear of covid. I understand Diamond is redoing the rooms but we got the older room. TBH it is pretty good condition and not dated. The shower had a bit of mold growth in one corner, but overall the room was clean and we had a great nite sleep. I do like the furniture, but the bed platform sticks out from the mattress and is a sharp wood corner. WATCH your ankles. It got me one night. The shower had great water pressure and I like the Lather toiletries. Staff were all very friendly. Location for me is good. We didnt plan to go to the beach, but you can take a nice walk to the beach in front of the Hilton or surf bowls. Pro tip, the beach by the Hilton actually exists and is way less crowded than other parts of waikiki. There isn't much "beach" left by dukes or queens. There aren't that many good restaurants walking distance unless you like red lobster. Katsumidori has good.sushi. it's at the prince but make reservations days ahead they book up fast. Read less
