The Modern Honolulu

Honolulu, Oahu

The hotel

Where innovative design meets barefoot luxury, the The Modern Honolulu's understated elegance and service has earned acclaim for service and design. It's posh without being pretentious, chic without being overdone, luxurious, yet brilliantly laid back. Guest rooms are decorated in natural tones and rich woods, with spa-like bathrooms and full-sized windows overlooking the city, the yacht harbour and the Pacific Ocean. Amenities are world-class and include a full-service spa with a variety of tempting treatments and two gorgeous swimming pools — the Sunrise Pool surrounded by lush, green landscape and the adults-only Sunset Pool, elevated on the first level and surrounded by sand. Hidden behind a secret passage, as if tucked away in a castle, is the lobby bar offering signature cocktails and light, eclectic fare. Lunch can also be enjoyed at the Bar at Sunrise Pool, under a canopy of lush bougainvillea and hanging lanterns. There’s a bar down at the beach too, residing under tall graceful palms with lounge chairs set in the water — a wonderful place to kick back and relax.

The Modern is in a great Waikiki location. Not right in the middle of all the bustle and noise but close enough that one can easily access stores and restaurants. The rooms are spacious and light with platform beds. The wifi is quite strong. There are two pools (although one was closed during my visit). The sunrise pool is lovely, especially during the late afternoon and early evening. There are a few things that if modified would improve the 'visit experience'. First check in is painfully slow. Most rental car agreements do not require as many signatures and legalese as The Modern's check in procedure. Secondly, the hotel should standardize its 'happy hour' times. The different happy hours at different hotel bars is confusing and can result in bills at non-happy hour rates that are very high. Lastly, the hotel provides two 500 ml bottles of water in each room upon check in. It does not matter whether one is staying 1 night or 1 week - 2 bottles. This is a ridiculous policy and the staff acknowledges that it makes no sense. Housekeeping should replenish the water as the bottles are used up. Food in the restaurants tends to be a bit pricey (it is a hotel after all), but there is a great pub across the street (Harbor Pub and Pizza) which serves a decent breakfast, makes terrific pizzas, salads and sandwiches and is moderately priced. Room not ready for nearly two hours, even though we arrived after checkin time. Front desk was suppose to call when room was ready..never did. No compensation was offered. Stay away. Room was super tiny and not so clean. Housekeeping was hit or miss, as in some days they missed us. Total crap.

We booked 2 nights at the Modern at the tail end of our trip since we were on the red-eye flying home on the Sunday and wanted to have a good night's sleep on the Saturday and a nap before heading to the airport. We knew there was a lounge in the lobby, but were not told that it turned into a night club on weekends. Our entire room was vibrating with music until well after 3am, and we were on the 7th floor! No other rooms available to move us, so none of us could fall asleep until almost 4am. It was a horrible way to end our family vacation in Honolulu. We stayed at the Modern about 5 years ago and it was a beautiful hotel. Not any more. It clearly has not been maintained as the luxury resort it once was. Read less

Like many others, I was repelled by the aggressive timeshare sales pitch cloaked in a saccharine phone call to your room inviting you to come to concierge desk for “your gift.” Ha. Like many others, I was repelled by the aggressive timeshare sales pitch cloaked in a saccharine phone call to your room inviting you to come to concierge desk for “your gift.” Ha. My overpriced “view” room overlooked ‘closed pool as sad puddle’ with peeling paint encircled by yellow plastic “stay away” tape like police use for crime sites (see photo). As others found, the Keurig coffeemaker in room is not replenished daily with supplies. That’s on you, bro. Restroom at pool level (the pool that was still functioning) was “out of order.” Checkout time is an aggressive 10am (!) but even then housekeeping knocks on your door a few minutes early to roust you out. Resort fee tacked on is for amenities that amount to next to nothing. The stampede to exit at 10am checkout resulting in clogged elevators did NOT prevent a Modern employee (looked like management level) from cramming himself onboard our car instead of saying he’d take the next one when he saw ours was stuffed to the gills. I guess this place was nice awhile ago when it still had a notable restaurant and different ownership but now... buyer beware. Read less

Great location, was easy walking to place getting on and off busses etc. Close to the beach. Was annoying they only offered people discounts to anything you wanted to so if you sat in a conference where theyd try and sell you shares!! Staff on the first day where great but other than that not great service.
