The hotel

Where innovative design meets barefoot luxury, the The Modern Honolulu's understated elegance and service has earned acclaim for service and design. It's posh without being pretentious, chic without being overdone, luxurious, yet brilliantly laid back. Guest rooms are decorated in natural tones and rich woods, with spa-like bathrooms and full-sized windows overlooking the city, the yacht harbour and the Pacific Ocean. Amenities are world-class and include a full-service spa with a variety of tempting treatments and two gorgeous swimming pools — the Sunrise Pool surrounded by lush, green landscape and the adults-only Sunset Pool, elevated on the first level and surrounded by sand. Hidden behind a secret passage, as if tucked away in a castle, is the lobby bar offering signature cocktails and light, eclectic fare. Lunch can also be enjoyed at the Bar at Sunrise Pool, under a canopy of lush bougainvillea and hanging lanterns. There’s a bar down at the beach too, residing under tall graceful palms with lounge chairs set in the water — a wonderful place to kick back and relax.

I travel quite a bit for work, so I have a good idea of what a good value looks like. The Modern is not a good value. Do not stay here. My assistant booked this for me, over the Marriott because I was looking for something closer to downtown, where I’d be working all week. First flag - my Uber driver told me he had a couple of ride share s that were pretty un happy. Second flag - charged an additional “resort fee” when I checked in. Okay, I booked through a third party, so based on my Uber ride I asked, will I be receiving room service during my six night stay? “No sir, due to COVID we are not offering any room service”. What’s the resort fee for, where’s the discount for lesser service? All other properties in Waikiki offer room service. Third flag - third night into my stay, with making my own bed a emptying my own garbage, I asked for some more Keurig coffee pods. “Sorry sir, coffee is complimentary for your initial check-in only” Please choose another property. There are so many with so much more value! Read less

We booked a room with a “partial ocean view”. What a joke. You have to crane your neck around the side of the building. Of course, we paid extra for this privilege. We were given a room next to the elevator which we heard going up and down all night long. No maid service after a week of going to the beach, made the bathroom floor very dirty. … Read more

We were given a room next to the elevator which we heard going up and down all night long. No maid service after a week of going to the beach, made the bathroom floor very dirty. You had to empty your own trash. The beds were ridiculously low to the ground with the wooden bed frame jutting out which we bumped into numerous times. The people who worked there were very, very nice. That was the only redeeming quality about this hotel. DON’T WASTE YOUR MONEY OR POINTS STAYING HERE! Read less

Really should not be considered an exceptional or "boutique" hotel. It is average at best. Having spent 5 days recently I found the room noisy, appointments dated, and service poor. Perhaps COVID has made it more difficult. However the room was never serviced even when asked, and small things like requests for clean towels or replacement of in room coffee were either refused or simply just not done. Most annoying was a "Resort fee" that was charged at check in that was not shown in any prior information so in effect was a hidden added daily cost. Read less

For me was good thing that it’s cloudy must of the time, So i choose walking since the Uber seemed really expensive . One of the best things to do while we were there was the Luau. You shouldn’t miss it. As a member of Diamond Resorts it was complementary for us. However even if you have to pay for it worth every penny you’ll spend. About the beach I can’t say nothing because I saw it more for surfing than to take a bath. and as Florida residents we can enjoy of beautiful beaches anytime lThe nature is wild and beautiful and the architecture is in harmony with nature, it merges with the landscape. The International Mall is iconic. I really enjoyed shopping I found very good offers from well-known brands, specially Versace, Ferragamo, Dolce&Gabbana, etc. The food is amazing, yummy. I liked the most were the salads, specially the Luau salad from Cheesecake Factory and the famous Island Vintage shave Ice. Read less

Checked in at 2:30am after a 16 hour delay from our flight in. Lost a full day of our vacation. We didn't let it disrupt us. Upon checking in, the front desk receptionist didn't crack a smile, didn't care about us being delayed. Just rushed to scan our travel things on our phones and charge us the upfront taxes and fees on our credit card. Subpar check-in experience. Room was not great. Bathroom door didn't shut all the way. Stained carpet. Shower tile had mildew. No daily or even weekly housekeeping, but at least they were relatively quick to bring up towels when we needed them. That was really the only plus. Initial concierge experience was okay. We did a bad job as far as planning activities prior to the trip so the meeting with the concierge helped. We booked a turtle snorkeling tour. We also booked a luau through a different company after being told by The Modern concierge that finding a luau this late was nearly impossible. Of course, they make us do a timeshare sales presentation. This was a bad experience. The saleslady seemed nice and presentable, but she said a bunch of head scratching statements for someone that's in sales. We mentioned that our next trip was to Tennessee, and she gave a bewildered look asking who goes to Tennessee and what is there to do there? She also flat out said to us that we should not even be there (there as in, at the hotel). She stated that the fact that I booked the trip using my family's timeshare points meant that I shouldn't be there. This was a big turnoff to say the least, especially since we booked this trip on the phone with one of their own companys' reps and clearly stated the situation. I don't understand when these timeshare company's are going to learn that it's not 1997 anymore and high pitch sales tactics do not work. Also, stubbed my toe really really bad on the way back to the hotel from a walk. It was bleeding. Get to the front desk. No first aid kit. She called someone, no luck. Just handed me a band-aid. The hotel is on the less crowded side of Waikiki. Waikiki is crowded. Recommend renting a car and driving around the island. The "restaurant" onsite is order at the counter, and is expensive. Pancakes were good though. Was given a towel with a huge gaping hole in it at the pool. Pool can be okay if others around are just looking to relax for a couple hours. You can tell the people that likely use the pool as the highlight of their entire trip and there are plenty of those types at this pool. The highlight of our trip was using our vouchers we received from our delayed flight and flying to Kauai on the second to last day. We had the best time there. Read less
