Holiday Inn Express - Fisherman's Wharf

Fisherman's Wharf, San Francisco

The hotel

In the middle of Fisherman's Wharf, you'll find yourself in a great spot, close to PIER 39 and Ghirardelli Square. The famous cable car turnaround is just outside too, so you can easily get to other neighbourhoods. There's a smart, maritime theme throughout the hotel making it a warm, relaxing respite from the city. And an American breakfast will fire you up for the day. Why not head over to the notorious ex-prison Alcatraz, wander around vibrant Chinatown or take a walk down to the Golden Gate Bridge.

Our family of four stayed here for our first visit to SF. The hotel is conveniently located within walking distance to Fisherman’s Wharf and Ghirardelli Square, and is around the corner from a Streetcar stop (cable cars were not yet operational during our stay). We selected a hotel package that included parking which was an excellent value compared to other hotels I researched. There is some street noise, but otherwise our family slept comfortably. Breakfast was a disappointment as it was grab-and-go pre-packaged muffins and cereal bars, but we enjoyed breakfast next door at Hollywood Cafe (which was expensive, but everything in SF is). I appreciate how HI Express does not tack on ridiculous “amenity/resort” fees as well as fees to use WiFi, but note the City of SF have additional fees. Our family felt safe walking to and from the hotel as we did not encounter much with regard to homelessness and panhandlers. I highly recommend this hotel for value-minded travelers who want to stay in Fisherman’s Wharf. Read less

While it was nice to be within a few blocks of the wharf area, a walk to catch the boat to Alcatraz, etc., the hotel was overpriced for what you get....a standard, unimpressive king bed room...bed linens nice, but towels were thin and scratchy, amenities minimal [more like a Motel 8}. The 'free breakfast" consisted of over ripe bananas, a breakfast bar, oatmeal you mixed with hot water, a small wrapped blueberry muffin, two flavors of yogurt, coffee and juice. One day they had an orange and more overly ripe bananas...no cold cereals, same blueberry muffins/raspberry breakfast bar. Unfortunately we failed to clarify the 'on site parking' was not free and it ended up being $80 per night by the time all the taxes were added. Since SF has had a reputation of a lot of homelessness, it was good that to access the first floor restrooms and the elevators to room floors one has to use the room key. We actually did not encounter many homeless, so that was good. There is a great breakfast/lunch place just outside the front door. Read less

Before arriving in SF, we compared several hotels in the Fisherman's Wharf area. Based on other reviews, conveniences, and pricing, we chose Holiday Inn Express. This is a great hotel to stay at! It is very close to the Wharf, Marina and Little Italy attractions. It is also located on a quieter street in the Wharf area. Very clean, large room, comfortable bed, excellent front desk staff (they will call a cab for you if needed), strong WiFi, and an adequate continental breakfast is available. Has a dorm-size refrigerator and coffee maker. Only small inconvenience was no microwave. This hotel also has an excellent security system, as you can only access the elevators with your room key. If you need a car, or dropping one off, there is an Enterprise/Alamo office around the corner on Beach St. There are additional fees/taxes imposed by the city on all hotels in SF, so be aware that your total costs will be about 15 - 20% higher than the room pricing you receive online. absolutely not worth it. disappointing room, did not give the impression of proper cleaning. frustrating how hard it was to reach the desk at night too just to ask for the smallest things. the entire building seems sad and rundown. stay somewhere else. anywhere else.

Hotel is secure, and even though we arrived at about 10:30 am - they were able to secure our luggage so we could start exploring and called an hour later saying our room was ready. Try to not get a 2nd floor room over the street - there were several deliveries in the night and a couple people arguing. The room does have a fan setting so you can try to drown out some noise. We didn't have any issues with hallway noise. As of June 2021, there is still just a grab and go breakfast (yogurt, cereal, cereal bars, juice, coffee), but we could see that they had a great buffet normally. Read less
