Hunter's Country House

Plettenberg Bay, Garden Route

The hotel

This grand estate on the Garden Route feels more like a charming English cottage in a secret garden – albeit one with a more balmy temperature fit for dips in its garden pool and al fresco dining on the lawns. A beautiful boutique retreat, Hunter’s Country House hides in the forests and hills between Knysna and Plettenberg Bay – two of the route’s most popular pit stops – with some of its nearest neighbours being the residents of Knysna Elephant Park. For children and teenagers, there’s their very own private recreational area, Cub's Corner, with everything necessary to keep them more than happy whilst parents enjoy some quality time together. A wine cellar houses some of the Cape’s finest Estate wines and there are three baronial dining rooms and an estate restaurants where guests can sample gastronomic cuisine by candlelight. Suites are very well equipped indeed and all individually decorated with antique furnishings, fire places, private patios, some with their own pools and panoramic views of the forest. Local activities include wine tasting, whale and dolphin spotting and forest picnics (make sure you order a hamper from the hotel before you set off!) For sun, sea and sand, there are countless beautiful beaches all within easy driving distance.

Having stayed in many wonderful hotels on a recent tour this one still stands out as the very best. The indivdual thatched cottages are just amazing, every comfort and such a large space. A bedroom area, a lounge with open fireplace, which they will light while you are at dinner in cold weather and an enornous bathroom. Shower had a glass ceiling! Outside patios too although weather was cold the two nights I was there so I preferred the open fire! Dinner was great but did take quite a long time although they say you can't rush perfection? Breakfast was served in a conservatory like area with monkeys running over the glass room. There was a large cold buffet and hot food was cooked to order with plenty of choices on the menu. The lounge was a lovely area and they served complimentary afternoon tea there, another place there was a large open fire. They really have thought of everything here, even a hot water bottle in your bed. As we were leaving they came out with bags with a bottle of water and some home baked cookies in, PADKOS, food for the road. The thoughtfulness and care make such a difference. Even welcoming notes on your bed each evening and as you arrive on the first day. Read less

We arrived mid afternoon to a wonderfully warm welcome from Louis and Donald followed by a tour of the property. If I was to have a regret when leaving here, it would be that we did not stay in the Tree top lodge at Tesla (on the same property). The views from Tsala are simply to wonderful to describe. We were lucky enough to have three nights staying in a wonderful suite at cottage 2 as part of an incredible trip around South Africa. The cottage was picture perfect with a real log fire which was lit for us in the evening. A fantastic bathroom with power shower and roll top bath added to our wonderful experience. Each night we came home to a hand written verse wishing us a good nights sleep, with a hand make made sweet. In the morning we had a wonderful breakfast which consisted of just about everything beautifully presented. My husband loved the freshly baked scones with fresh cream and jam the most. The grounds are spectacular and there is even a beautiful chapel on site. Walking round the gardens we were lucky enough to see a family of deer grazing peacefully. The on site restaurants were excellent for evening meals, staff were very friendly and professional and we would have to say a special mention to Donald who was so enthusiastic about work and knowledgeable about Scotland. We will definitely return here on day, hopefully soon. Read less
