Hunter's Country House

Plettenberg Bay, Garden Route

The hotel

This grand estate on the Garden Route feels more like a charming English cottage in a secret garden – albeit one with a more balmy temperature fit for dips in its garden pool and al fresco dining on the lawns. A beautiful boutique retreat, Hunter’s Country House hides in the forests and hills between Knysna and Plettenberg Bay – two of the route’s most popular pit stops – with some of its nearest neighbours being the residents of Knysna Elephant Park. For children and teenagers, there’s their very own private recreational area, Cub's Corner, with everything necessary to keep them more than happy whilst parents enjoy some quality time together. A wine cellar houses some of the Cape’s finest Estate wines and there are three baronial dining rooms and an estate restaurants where guests can sample gastronomic cuisine by candlelight. Suites are very well equipped indeed and all individually decorated with antique furnishings, fire places, private patios, some with their own pools and panoramic views of the forest. Local activities include wine tasting, whale and dolphin spotting and forest picnics (make sure you order a hamper from the hotel before you set off!) For sun, sea and sand, there are countless beautiful beaches all within easy driving distance.

We stayed at Hunter's Country House after a couple of night's on a tented safari, so really appreciated the comforts of this hotel! The hotel is located down a guarded driveway off the main road between Plettenberg & Knysna, so is a perfect stop-off point along the Garden Route. To be honest we weren't that impressed with either Plettenberg or Knysna so were very pleased we chose to stay at Hunter's. The grounds of the hotel are stunning & very well manicured and pool, outside relaxation area with comfortable chairs were very nice indeed (perfect for what we needed after 2 nights in a tent!). The rooms are also very spacious with a lovely four poster bed & separate seating area. The bathroom was huge! We ate in the on-site restaurant in the conservatory one of the nights & the other night we walked across the grounds to the Zenzi (I think it was called) restaurant, where the food was very tasty & well presented. To be honest though the food in the conservatory was also very good as was breakfast which was also served here. It was funny watching the monkeys trying to get in through the windows one morning at breakfast, but the staff were very quick to close everything up to prevent them! They also do (free) afternoon tea & cakes, which was nice to have in the charming lounge or it can be taken outside if preferred. All staff were very friendly & helpful and for the money (even the Zenzi restaurant was good value by UK standards), this was one of our favourite stays in the whole 2 & half weeks we spent in South Africa!
