Hunter's Country House

Plettenberg Bay, Garden Route

The hotel

This grand estate on the Garden Route feels more like a charming English cottage in a secret garden – albeit one with a more balmy temperature fit for dips in its garden pool and al fresco dining on the lawns. A beautiful boutique retreat, Hunter’s Country House hides in the forests and hills between Knysna and Plettenberg Bay – two of the route’s most popular pit stops – with some of its nearest neighbours being the residents of Knysna Elephant Park. For children and teenagers, there’s their very own private recreational area, Cub's Corner, with everything necessary to keep them more than happy whilst parents enjoy some quality time together. A wine cellar houses some of the Cape’s finest Estate wines and there are three baronial dining rooms and an estate restaurants where guests can sample gastronomic cuisine by candlelight. Suites are very well equipped indeed and all individually decorated with antique furnishings, fire places, private patios, some with their own pools and panoramic views of the forest. Local activities include wine tasting, whale and dolphin spotting and forest picnics (make sure you order a hamper from the hotel before you set off!) For sun, sea and sand, there are countless beautiful beaches all within easy driving distance.

The hotel grounds are really well kept and provided space to take some nice walks. We stayed in room 31 which was lovely but next door to a staff area so occasionally we heard noise. If returning we would choose a room further from the main building. The staff were all friendly and helpful and the whole place made you feel relaxed. There were plenty of places to sit, our favourite being the summer room which had beautiful furniture. We ate dinner here twice but the menu doesn't change which makes choice a bit limited. It was a nice touch when they provided a little bag with water and cookies when you were leaving. Overall we enjoyed our stay. Read less

The last time we were at this restaurant it was fantastic, so we had great expectations. Sadly, they were not met. My husband and the other man in our group ordered the duck dish to share (it was advertised as a dish for two) and us girls ordered the pork belly. Our meal was very tasty and the only complaint we had was that the ravioli had been left in the warmer too long and had become hard and rubbery... Otherwise a super dish. The men on the other hand were horrified when their dish arrived with two bite-sized pieces of duck and two bite-sized pieces of chicken! Surely this could not be the very expensive dish they had ordered, this must be for one person... We called the waiter, and he called the manager who confirmed that the order was correct, but the menu was wrong! They had forgotten to mention the chicken! She agreed that the portion size was very small and returned a while later with more meat. Sadly, the duck was very tough so a complete disappointment. Then came dessert, and us girls decided on the panacotta for two (by now we should have know better). It arrived, and was most definitely a single portion, extremely expensive at R176! And to be honest, I've had better. This venue has a great ambiance, beautiful setting and great staff just a pity about the food! Read less

Tsala, Hunter's and Laird's are all in the same park area however, the pictures of Hunter's were the most beautiful to me. When we arrived I was not disappointed. Very beautiful lodge with attention to detail. There is a great deal of nature all around and even some monkeys running around the property. There is a pool, gym area, a high class restaurant with absolutely delicious food. Close by there is another restaurant we did not have the time of trying. The bedrooms were small compared to what we are used to in this category of hotel but beds were comfortable, everything was perfectly clean although you will have your random bug in the room due to ground floor rooms and being in the wild. The area is colorful with lots of flowers. Read less

Stayed here for two nights. It is a great place to stay and very relaxing. The staff are all fantastic and can’t do enough to help. There are a few animals to spot wandering around such as baboon and dear if you are lucky enough to see them. Would most definitely recommend staying here. Thanks to everyone.

We had booked a four night stay at another property nearby....and our hearts sank as we entered that property. Two years ago we believe it was a great property but events had taken place and the property was unloved. Also as a former award winning innkeeper I notice EVERYTHING good or indifferent, a hazard of working in hospitality. We visited Hunters and hoped they might have two rooms to bail us out of a difficult predicament. Indeed they accommodated us despite having to jiggle things about and even offered us a cup of tea whilst they sorted things out. Tonia in particular could not do enough to welcome us, calm the situation and make us feel treasured...we were extremely appreciative. This small hotel is actually a decent size, but it doesn't feel like a corporate property as it has various cottages, little alcoves, superb gardens, a decent pool. Most importantly the staff who smile seem to like their work! It was indeed an oasis for us..... The property is special and charming but I'd doubt suitable for most 20 year old newly weds as it reeks of lovely traditional British country hotels of the 1950's. Many clients are mature in years and thus a quieter time can be had. Socks and sandels, swimming trunks that may have seen better days and bodies, however one feels loved in a homely way. Their complimentary afternoon tea was a delight. One very impressive point....we booked to eat one night at Sage. Less than 3 hours after booking we are seated and given menus...so what you may think? Well the menu was individually personalised with my name on it....never seen that before! A really lovely touch. So what can I say.....Plettenberg bay is a town with many lodging properties, but staying in Harkerville allows one to get away from most tourists and the price is very reasonable for the level of exemplary service that is provided. Go stay and yes you can see my comments on other properties when I write them. I will be fair and balanced....but I'd stay here every time. Read less
