Hunter's Country House

Plettenberg Bay, Garden Route

The hotel

This grand estate on the Garden Route feels more like a charming English cottage in a secret garden – albeit one with a more balmy temperature fit for dips in its garden pool and al fresco dining on the lawns. A beautiful boutique retreat, Hunter’s Country House hides in the forests and hills between Knysna and Plettenberg Bay – two of the route’s most popular pit stops – with some of its nearest neighbours being the residents of Knysna Elephant Park. For children and teenagers, there’s their very own private recreational area, Cub's Corner, with everything necessary to keep them more than happy whilst parents enjoy some quality time together. A wine cellar houses some of the Cape’s finest Estate wines and there are three baronial dining rooms and an estate restaurants where guests can sample gastronomic cuisine by candlelight. Suites are very well equipped indeed and all individually decorated with antique furnishings, fire places, private patios, some with their own pools and panoramic views of the forest. Local activities include wine tasting, whale and dolphin spotting and forest picnics (make sure you order a hamper from the hotel before you set off!) For sun, sea and sand, there are countless beautiful beaches all within easy driving distance.

There is a roll top bath in some rooms that was very quaint. It is close to various great attractions like monkey world and walking with the elephants. The food was excellent in both restauranta and reasonably priced. Drinks in the mini bar and restaurants are also good prices. The breakfasts are delicious with plenty of choice from pastries to full English breakfast.all excellent quality. Beautiful surrounding where we saw various tropical birds and monkeys playing in the garden. A very special place. We will be back. I was afraid to do a nice review as it is a secret hidden gem!!!! We loved it!! Read less

I'd read the negative reviews before we visited and I think I must have been staying somewhere else...this place was like heaven. The grounds are beautiful and had deer roaming the lawns and monkeys swinging from the trees. We stayed in the garden cottages and thought they were magical - the furniture is antique, so I suppose that may not be to some people's taste, but we loved it - it felt like stepping back in time. They thought of everything to make your stay special, quotes left on the bed each night, a bedtime treat left in glass cloches at the side of the bed. Complimentary drinks in the drawing room and boma before dinner, candles and matches by the bath, and on the day we left they handed us a brown paper bag filled with water and homemade biscuits for our onward journey. Food; both breakfast and dinner were amazing and all of the staff were wonderful. It doesnt feel like a hotel, it feels more like you are a special guest at someone's country home. We really didnt want to leave and cannot wait to return. Read less
