The hotel

This grand estate on the Garden Route feels more like a charming English cottage in a secret garden – albeit one with a more balmy temperature fit for dips in its garden pool and al fresco dining on the lawns. A beautiful boutique retreat, Hunter’s Country House hides in the forests and hills between Knysna and Plettenberg Bay – two of the route’s most popular pit stops – with some of its nearest neighbours being the residents of Knysna Elephant Park. For children and teenagers, there’s their very own private recreational area, Cub's Corner, with everything necessary to keep them more than happy whilst parents enjoy some quality time together. A wine cellar houses some of the Cape’s finest Estate wines and there are three baronial dining rooms and an estate restaurants where guests can sample gastronomic cuisine by candlelight. Suites are very well equipped indeed and all individually decorated with antique furnishings, fire places, private patios, some with their own pools and panoramic views of the forest. Local activities include wine tasting, whale and dolphin spotting and forest picnics (make sure you order a hamper from the hotel before you set off!) For sun, sea and sand, there are countless beautiful beaches all within easy driving distance.

We booked Hunter's Country for 4 nights last week . We have dined at Zinzi a year ago which was one of our reasons for booking . The situation between Knysna and Plettenburg Bay was our second reason . The third reason were the TripAdvisor reviews ! We were not disappointed , the quality of the accommodation , gardens and dining options were all superb .We had dinner at Zinzi , Sage and Tsala all of which were top class . The fact you could walk back to your suite and not require a taxi or car drive was great .. However the best I have left till last , the staff were wonderful , without exception friendly and yet professional . We hope to return soon and after this review with a discount !! Thanks for a great stay . Lindsay Read less

I can't sing the praises of Hunter's Country House enough. We had the most wonderful experience. The staff were amazing and the attention to detail exceptional. I can't sing the praises of Hunter's Country House enough. We had the most wonderful experience. The staff were amazing and the attention to detail exceptional. We ate in all three restaurants during our stay, each have their own character and all are a wonderful dining experience. The breakfast in the conservatory was delicious, and we enjoyed watching the monkeys peeping in. All the staff were amazing but I would like to say Peter the General Manage was exceptional he went out of his way to help us find interesting places to visit which were accessible with my limited mobility . I have recommended Hunters to several other people we have met on our journey I know they will have an amazing experience. Read less

An absolute fantastic place to stay, also with young kids like we did. An absolute fantastic place to stay, also with young kids like we did. Literally everything is immaculate like you would expect from a five star hotel, but what makes all the difference is the most friendly and attentive staff who always seem to know what you need before you know it yourself. Their small surprises/gestures made it more than magical for us and our little ones. Decompress, let the kids enjoy the playground and enjoy the full experience and great restaurants on the Hunters ground. Read less

Everything exceeded expectations - the warm welcome on arrival, the delicious food, the choice of dining experiences, the honesty bar, the upstairs library, the outdoor pool, the helpful friendly staff, the incredibly comfortable rooms. We were lucky enough to be offered a room upgrade which was a fantastic surprise. Easy access to Plettenberg Bay main beach area and Robberg trail. One of the highlights of the whole trip, would highly recommend for anyone travelling through Plettenberg Bay. Read less
