The hotel

One of Toronto’s landmark hotels, Fairmont Royal York was built by Canadian Pacific Railway in 1929 and has since welcomed dignitaries and royalty, including Queen Elizabeth II. Once the tallest building in the British Empire, the hotel is housed in a distinctive chateau-style high-rise building and offers a wealth of amenities to keep you busy in-between sightseeing. The fitness centre is almost a world of its own with lap pool, children’s wading pool, steam rooms, saunas and a state-of-the-art gym. Two levels of shops are enough to satisfy the most ardent of shoppers with more shops located directly underneath the hotel in the PATH complex. Several exceptional restaurants cater to every kind of culinary desire. For mouth-watering steaks, look no further than Benihana Japanese Steakhouse and for the best martinis in town, head to the Library Bar with its rich furnishings and elegant atmosphere. Not to be missed is the afternoon tea and Rooftop Garden Tour, held every Saturday and Sunday.

The team gave us a surprise which were a bottle of wine, strawberry-coated sweets and the cake towel which was very artistically done! Well done to all who did their effort! Food Room service was excellent too! This hotel is right at the centre of Toronto where you can easily access train station, tourist attractions, shops, buses, trams etc. Highly recommended and we’ll surely be back again someday. We opted to book this location as a “pick-me-up”. Our vacation didn’t go as planned, flights were repeated canceled. We decided to stay here and it’s a great location! The staff were wonderful, professional, and friendly. They went out of their way to help us when I asked for coffee (only decaf in the room), etc. I enjoy the royal treatment very much so I choose Fairmont when it’s available. This location is across from the Union Station (and where the Union Chicken restaurant is located - if you want chicken burgers and whatnot). Ideal location - you can hail a taxi with a wave or summon an Uber in minutes. As for the vibe of the hotel, it’s more of a nightclub scene. It’s not my style but it suits the area. Guests should be aware of it. It’s not the same as the Fairmont in other jurisdictions…but that’s understandable. I still enjoyed it. Oh…there’s a convenience store on the lower level of the hotel (reasonable prices and friendly staff) as well as a path/tunnel that connects to other areas much like a skywalk. The overall feel of the area is safe. You can walk up the street to grab your timmies fix (coffee) if you don’t want to enjoy room service or breakfast at the hotel. Only negatives were: It was loud Saturday after midnight on the 10th floor with some guests running thru the halls laughing and screaming. They awoke us from our slumber. At least they were having a fun time and there was no danger. Also the elevators are painfully slow…wait time is long…and sometimes it doesn’t come when you call it. Everyone while we were there seemed to know that if you hear the chime, grab that elevator because it’ll be quite a while before the next one arrives. It also doesn’t light up when it’s going down, only when it’s going up. So people step in and “steal” your lift because they don’t know any better. Also, room service seems to be unnecessarily expensive. Stick to Uber Eats. Use that hard earned money elsewhere. There are several hotels in the area. Overall, it was enjoyable and I would consider this location again. Photo attached of room 10-141. Read less

We very much enjoyed the quality of our room (15-107). Even more we enjoyed the quality of all staff we encountered. Particular mention of the staff in the Gold Room (Monika, Karla & Fabian). The hotel has had significant renovations during the past 3 years. All the dining facilities and bars are very contemporary.
