Fairmont Royal York

Toronto, Canada

The hotel

One of Toronto’s landmark hotels, Fairmont Royal York was built by Canadian Pacific Railway in 1929 and has since welcomed dignitaries and royalty, including Queen Elizabeth II. Once the tallest building in the British Empire, the hotel is housed in a distinctive chateau-style high-rise building and offers a wealth of amenities to keep you busy in-between sightseeing. The fitness centre is almost a world of its own with lap pool, children’s wading pool, steam rooms, saunas and a state-of-the-art gym. Two levels of shops are enough to satisfy the most ardent of shoppers with more shops located directly underneath the hotel in the PATH complex. Several exceptional restaurants cater to every kind of culinary desire. For mouth-watering steaks, look no further than Benihana Japanese Steakhouse and for the best martinis in town, head to the Library Bar with its rich furnishings and elegant atmosphere. Not to be missed is the afternoon tea and Rooftop Garden Tour, held every Saturday and Sunday.

Unfortunately, some of the things they did prior to COVid to make people feel special have been stopped. Perhaps these policies need to be reviewed in light of more recent data on how this virus is transmitted. For example 2 of my grandchildren 2 and 4 years ago received a "Royal York" stuffed animal and a welcome Happy birthday platter of cookies delivered to the room. On their cousin's recent stay these were not available, nor was a child's size robe. These things she knew her cousins were given yet she wasn't. Staff at the front desk explained that these were stopped due to CoVid, but I do not believe this is necessary any longer as the virus is spread mainly through aerosol transmission.. I asked to purchase a Royal York stuffed animal, so she wouldn't be so disappointed, but couldn't. Thinking of aerosol transmission, some of the elevators had signs recommending no more than 3 unrelated patrons per elevator, others were missing the sign and were stuffed with 8 or more people on Thanksgiving day. This was a last minute booking for my son and I to get away. I found a great deal on Hotwire, but wanted to give the Royal York the opportunity to match the online deal - shop local, and all that, because why give Hotwire a commission when every penny counts because of the lost business due to Covid. I called Fairmont and the customer service representative told me Fairmont would match the deal and even suggested that Fairmont would give me an extra 10% off if I booked directly through the Royal York website, which I did. They stay was marvelous and my son and I could not have asked for anything else from the staff in the Gold Lounge. Things fell apart after, and needless to say it would seem that the offer to match is a sham and a scam and that the whole objective is to get the guest to pay more and to avoid honouring their pledge. After many back-and-forths with the Fairmont team I have grown tired of their disingenuous charade. Shame on them. Read less

We have stayed here multiple times for different events / occasions. Always a comfortable, relaxing and enjoyable stay. Very convenient to get to via the subway. Easy check in and out. The welcome drink was a nice surprise.

Overall good stay, what was missing was the personal touch. In the past when we stayed we mentioned that the purpose of the trip was for an anniversary or birthday. Fairmont staff, almost always did something special for the tip. We weren't disappointed, it was a good stay but we always expect Fairmont to go always go above expectations.

We had an amazing time at the royal York. This was our short but sweet honeymoon! After our flight being delayed 8. Hours we finally made it. We were greeted at the front and found out that we were upgraded to a gold suite! The room is absolutely beautiful. We were here all but five minutes when there was a knock at the door and we were being greeted with champagne and chocolate dip strawberries. We went upstairs to the lounge and we were met by Noor. He’s a superstar. So friendly! We had breakfast in the lounge and the food was amazing. There is an Australian gentleman that works in the lobby who went out of his way to talk to us for a few minutes and show us around and give us suggestions. The staff have been absolutely 110% and have made this vacation awesome! Thanks again for making our hockeymoon so special!! Read less
