The hotel

One of Toronto’s landmark hotels, Fairmont Royal York was built by Canadian Pacific Railway in 1929 and has since welcomed dignitaries and royalty, including Queen Elizabeth II. Once the tallest building in the British Empire, the hotel is housed in a distinctive chateau-style high-rise building and offers a wealth of amenities to keep you busy in-between sightseeing. The fitness centre is almost a world of its own with lap pool, children’s wading pool, steam rooms, saunas and a state-of-the-art gym. Two levels of shops are enough to satisfy the most ardent of shoppers with more shops located directly underneath the hotel in the PATH complex. Several exceptional restaurants cater to every kind of culinary desire. For mouth-watering steaks, look no further than Benihana Japanese Steakhouse and for the best martinis in town, head to the Library Bar with its rich furnishings and elegant atmosphere. Not to be missed is the afternoon tea and Rooftop Garden Tour, held every Saturday and Sunday.

This is our third time saying at the Fairmount and they've completely ruined the chance of us staying anywhere else! Location is great, situated downtown close to all the attractions, it's a short Uber/Taxi ride away from all the great restaurants in the city. We had breakfast at Reign and the food was delicious as were the fresh pastries at their coffee counter. The staff is friendly and courteous, from the front desk personnel, concierge and house keeping - we were welcomed by several housekeeping team members randomly in the hallway throughout our time at the hotel who wished us a great stay and good day. From top to bottom they understand and exemplify HOSPITALITY. This is often not recognized or practiced at other brands. We cannot say enough great things about The Fairmount Royal York and are already looking forward to our next visit! Read less

Returned here after a fantastic stay 16 yrs ago on our last visit to Toronto. Sadly things have changed and not for the better although there is still a certain charm about the place and the flower arrangements were stunning. The wonderful lobby area is now taken over by a bar and the staff are just not giving the friendly service you would hope for. The historic nature of the hotel means that the rooms are quite small (compared to similarly priced hotels) and quite dated. If you are a light sleeper, make sure you are nowhere near the elevator as they are very noisy. We had to move room during a 3 night stay due a problem with the electrics. Our room lost power about 20 minutes before most of Toronto lost power due to a bad storm, but we had already called maintenance and they were trying to fix it so it was clear that it was a separate issue. While the storm was beyond the hotels’ fault, and they were dealing with flooding in the dining room and other issues, nobody checked if the power had come on for us and it took several attempts phoning reception to finally be told we needed to move room. The power was off for over 5 hours. The laundry charges are $20 for most items (plus tax) and by the look of the number of pizza boxes and takeaways being carried through the lobby to guest rooms, the dine-in options were of a similarly inflated price. The pool area is nice and clean although it was busy due to the bad weather, and the opening hours of this and the gym were good. The thing this hotel has in its favour is a fantastic location although so much has been built around it that unless you are on a high floor I doubt a view of the island and Lake Ontario is still possible. Close to the CN tower, the island ferry, and easy to walk to the main shopping areas, the distillery district etc. Union station is right across the road too if you are arriving by train. I enjoyed our stay but mainly because it brought back happy memories of our previous stay when the children were small rather than from my experience this trip. Read less

Have been wanting to stay at the Fairmont Royal York. So when we booked, we were all really excited. This excitement turned to disappointment. The majority of the staff were great but the reception and restaurant staff need to learn about customer service. After travelling for 14 hours, we arrived at the hotel at 1.30. We were informed that our suite was not ready, but housekeeping were getting the room ready. After 2 hours and numerous visits to the check in desk in desk we finally had access to our room. The reception staff were not only unhelpful but also very dismissive with comments such as, "we cannot do anything" and "we cannot guarantee your room till 4pm." If we had been told that when we first checked in, we would have arranged to go out instead of waiting in the foyer. As for the restaurant staff, we were told there was no availability at breakfast and we should have made reservations. However this was not the advice given to us at check in. Not staying or recommending this so called traveller's choice awarded hotel to anyone Read less

The room was fantastic. Clean and larger then expected. We had a king bed. My wife would say that the AC could be a little cooler. We did not have an iron or blow dryer in the room. The night table clock has ability to charge wirelessly and via USB. Bathroom is not roomy but door opens with 2 in the bathroom.

Beautiful hotel in Downtown Toronto right opposite Union Station. Great location for tourists especially if flying from Pearson as the train is a 2 min walk from hotel. Impressive interiors, lovely pool and gorgeous rooms. Highly recommended
