The hotel

One of Toronto’s landmark hotels, Fairmont Royal York was built by Canadian Pacific Railway in 1929 and has since welcomed dignitaries and royalty, including Queen Elizabeth II. Once the tallest building in the British Empire, the hotel is housed in a distinctive chateau-style high-rise building and offers a wealth of amenities to keep you busy in-between sightseeing. The fitness centre is almost a world of its own with lap pool, children’s wading pool, steam rooms, saunas and a state-of-the-art gym. Two levels of shops are enough to satisfy the most ardent of shoppers with more shops located directly underneath the hotel in the PATH complex. Several exceptional restaurants cater to every kind of culinary desire. For mouth-watering steaks, look no further than Benihana Japanese Steakhouse and for the best martinis in town, head to the Library Bar with its rich furnishings and elegant atmosphere. Not to be missed is the afternoon tea and Rooftop Garden Tour, held every Saturday and Sunday.

The staff are always welcoming and go out of their way to make you feel comfortable. The hotel is within walking distance to so many great places (shops, restaurants, markets, venues) and the subway is right there for places too far to walk. The restaurants at the hotel also offer superb, quality dining with consistency so there is never any disappointment. Read less

All staff were friendly and helpful. The room was exceptionally comfortable and I hated to leave the armchair and footstool behind! Bed linens and towels were of high quality. I ate breakfast in The Bakery where I was offered a choice of seating and chose a small table by the fireplace. My meal was served on a large attractive plate and contained yogurt with granola, a smoothie shot, a bran muffin, as well as assorted fruit. The serving was so large I ate only half the muffin. In addition, I was offered a print copy of The Globe and Mail, a paper I usually read on-line. I chose coffee to drink. After checkout, I left my small backpack in the luggage room to retrieve later on my return to Union Station. I will certainly choose this hotel should I stay in Toronto overnight in future. It’s expensive but so are most hotel stays. Read less

We must give credit to Bailey from the hotel's Loyalty team. It was the first time since becoming a newly married couple that we were celebrating with Family. I happened to mention this in a note to the hotel as well as a preference for being located with a view and higher in the house. Well, the views from our room of Toronto's CN Tower were spectacular, and the hand-written card of congratulations accompanied by a wedge of delicious chocolate layer gateau was one of the best unexpected welcomes we have received. And of course, every one who works at the Royal York treated as the moniker implies... royally. Our extended weekend in Toronto to celebrate our marriage with family was made even more memorable thanks to the amazing room and the incredible staff - merci Michael and Patrick Read less
