Fairmont Royal York

Toronto, Canada

The hotel

One of Toronto’s landmark hotels, Fairmont Royal York was built by Canadian Pacific Railway in 1929 and has since welcomed dignitaries and royalty, including Queen Elizabeth II. Once the tallest building in the British Empire, the hotel is housed in a distinctive chateau-style high-rise building and offers a wealth of amenities to keep you busy in-between sightseeing. The fitness centre is almost a world of its own with lap pool, children’s wading pool, steam rooms, saunas and a state-of-the-art gym. Two levels of shops are enough to satisfy the most ardent of shoppers with more shops located directly underneath the hotel in the PATH complex. Several exceptional restaurants cater to every kind of culinary desire. For mouth-watering steaks, look no further than Benihana Japanese Steakhouse and for the best martinis in town, head to the Library Bar with its rich furnishings and elegant atmosphere. Not to be missed is the afternoon tea and Rooftop Garden Tour, held every Saturday and Sunday.

From being insulted when I walked up to the hotel until being told I was going to be compensated for the unforeseen circumstances to having my room downgraded and having to pay for everything including the bottle of water.

I'm in a minority on this one. Relative to other Fairmont properties, the Royal York distinctly lacks charm. I'm in a minority on this one. Relative to other Fairmont properties, the Royal York distinctly lacks charm. Its lobby is barn-like, somewhat akin to a railway waiting room, its bar distinctly pedestrian (although the barman is skilled) and many of the rooms that are not south-facing dark as Hades, as the Royal York sits beneath a forest of sky-scrapers blocking most light. Regular redecoration helps, but many of the bathrooms are hopelessly cramped and the grey decor doesn't help with the lack of daylight in many of the rooms. Visitors and business clients can do (much) better and cheaper nearby. On the plus side, the staff is well-trained, cheery and helpful. Read less

We have returned to the Royal York hotel and enjoyed ourselves once again. The hotel is beautiful and recently upgraded the lobby bar area. We stayed in a suite and it was lovely and clean. The only comment I will make is that it was not entirely noise proof.
