Fairmont Royal York

Toronto, Canada

The hotel

One of Toronto’s landmark hotels, Fairmont Royal York was built by Canadian Pacific Railway in 1929 and has since welcomed dignitaries and royalty, including Queen Elizabeth II. Once the tallest building in the British Empire, the hotel is housed in a distinctive chateau-style high-rise building and offers a wealth of amenities to keep you busy in-between sightseeing. The fitness centre is almost a world of its own with lap pool, children’s wading pool, steam rooms, saunas and a state-of-the-art gym. Two levels of shops are enough to satisfy the most ardent of shoppers with more shops located directly underneath the hotel in the PATH complex. Several exceptional restaurants cater to every kind of culinary desire. For mouth-watering steaks, look no further than Benihana Japanese Steakhouse and for the best martinis in town, head to the Library Bar with its rich furnishings and elegant atmosphere. Not to be missed is the afternoon tea and Rooftop Garden Tour, held every Saturday and Sunday.

Overall quite quirky but I am sure their are better hotels so do the research before booking. Read less

While significant work is being put into updating the lobby area, it is nothing more than putting lipstick on a pig. I stayed on 11, while the hotels non-smoking the entire hallway and rooms all stank offstage smoke from a long gone glory. No, you can't smoke on 11 anymore, but neither can the Royal York seem to rid itself of the stench. The lobby Library bar remains unchanged for more than 20 years that I can remember. And as an added bonus, the inform wifi router is so cleverly mounted on the ceiling of the room and emits a pulsating blue status light at all times! So many better choices for a weary traveller. Just checked in and already want to leave. Got the hotel using Hotwire which I guess means prepare to be treated like second class citizens here. Just checked in and already want to leave. Got the hotel using Hotwire which I guess means prepare to be treated like second class citizens here. It’s not like I specifically chose it just happened to save what maybe 20% which isn’t a whole lot to be honest. We were given an old outdated musky smelly room right by a busy elevator so we will now have the pleasure of hearing everyone coming and going. The room is small, outdated furniture, the king size bed is super uncomfortable. Checking was quick and rushed we weren’t even asked if we had an preferences on where we would like to stay and any sort of views that’s were available. I’ve used Hotwire before and stayed at one king west and had probably one of the best experiences there and felt like a regular guest. Here is another story the air of pretentiousness is profound. I’ve stayed at the one king west hotel multiple times after because of my first experience there using Hotwire. Why the fairmont can’t see that they can have return guests based on how they treat them during their first visit. If you’re thinking of staying here just avoid it you will probably get the smelly musky room, horrible view, slow elevators that make it feel as though you are ascending into a mineshaft not going to a nice room.
