Fairmont Royal York

Toronto, Canada

The hotel

One of Toronto’s landmark hotels, Fairmont Royal York was built by Canadian Pacific Railway in 1929 and has since welcomed dignitaries and royalty, including Queen Elizabeth II. Once the tallest building in the British Empire, the hotel is housed in a distinctive chateau-style high-rise building and offers a wealth of amenities to keep you busy in-between sightseeing. The fitness centre is almost a world of its own with lap pool, children’s wading pool, steam rooms, saunas and a state-of-the-art gym. Two levels of shops are enough to satisfy the most ardent of shoppers with more shops located directly underneath the hotel in the PATH complex. Several exceptional restaurants cater to every kind of culinary desire. For mouth-watering steaks, look no further than Benihana Japanese Steakhouse and for the best martinis in town, head to the Library Bar with its rich furnishings and elegant atmosphere. Not to be missed is the afternoon tea and Rooftop Garden Tour, held every Saturday and Sunday.

Had to take a mental health break during this lockdown. This was my first time at this hotel. The hotel firstly is in a perfect location; There are so many conveniences not even a 5min walk away (convience store, restaurants, coffee shops, transit). The Fairmont is so beautifully decorated not the usual generic hotel look. There is immaculate attention and adherence to covid protocols. I felt completely safe. All staff I encountered were welcoming, very helpful and friendly. The room was super clean, beautiful and appointed with everything you'd need. The bed is so comfy! I requested a microwave in room which allowed me to stay in for most of my stay. Perfectly quiet and I was left alone in privacy for all of my stay. They have yoga and meditation sessions available on their channel, which was fantastic I made use of it every morning in room. This was just what I needed, some pampered time for myself with nothing to worry about. Even though there aren't any amenities open due to covid restrictions I still felt like this was a luxurious relaxing weekend. Great stay! Read less

This was my first experience staying at a Fairmont hotel and I am a new fan! First impressions say everything. I was warmly greeted by the doorman who took care of my luggage and directed me into the hotel. WOW! The hotel is decorated in an art deco style and I felt like I was in a 1920s movie. These days hotels can be generic, sterile, and unimaginative. The Royal York is unique, warm and elegant. Check-in was efficient, and struck the right balance of professionalism and friendliness. The room was spacious, beautiful and immaculately clean. Again, this was not your average hotel room. The decor was unique in an art deco style. I felt like I was in a NYC Park Avenue apartment. I appreciated the tea pot and beautiful tea cups. The bed was comfortable and linens were luxurious. The bathroom was amazing with a separate w.c. and large shower. The tub was the largest I’ve ever enjoyed in a hotel. It’s hard for a hotel to surprise you with amenities, but the Royal York did that with their “SkinJay” aromatherapy system for the shower. They provide you with different pod essences that attach to the shower and you can enjoy a unique experience depending on your mood (relax, revive, etc). I ordered room service twice and it was delicious and arrived quickly. The staff taking the order always said, "It's X o'clock now, your meal will arrive by X o'clock". Every contact with staff was flawless and they always expressed their appreciation for my patronage during these difficult times. I will definitely return to The Royal York. Congratulation to staff and management for a unique, wonderful and memorable experience. Read less

Checked in with Jason in the Gold Lounge who was beyond amazing. He was friendly and courteous, and took a personal interest on the purpose of our visit. He made us feel very special. Thank you Jason! The room was absolutely stunning, and the bed OMG was one of the most comfortable ever. In combination with the pillows and duvet, as soon as you crawl into the bed it’s lights out from there. Thank you to the room service team all orders were delicious, presented beautifully, and delivered quickly. Overall the evening was beyond my expectations and definitely will return. Read less

My boyfriend, my cat and I were lucky enough to visit the Fairmont Royal York for NYE. I live in Montreal but I was in town to visit my partner who’s based in Toronto. We decided to do a staycation at our favourite hotel for the Holidays. We booked the Gold King Suite on the Gold Floor (upgraded floors of the hotel). We, once again, felt like home and were more than impressed with the service and attention we received, especially during the situation of the pandemic. The private check-in was flawless (and actually pleasant!). Shout out to Jason from the Gold Floor for his friendly interactions, on-top-of-things attitude and constant attention to detail. 🏆 The Gold King Suite felt like a luxury residential appartement. We got a corner unit which features windows all around. The finishes, lighting and decor of this room makes it 100% worth the upgrade. The separate living room with a Chromecast-equipped TV made it easy for Netflix binging, and the furnitures and linens were up to the standard to the most luxurious International hotels. We especially loved the marble covered double-sink bathroom and the small yet glamorous bar. The suite offered a dramatic view on the CN Tower, a nice touch to watch the NYE CN Tower light show. The in-room dining was quick and delightful. The menu was updated since out last Summer staycation. We found the selection more approachable and exciting. We especially the Roasted Sprouts, we ordered them three times. 😂 The Club Sandwich was surprisingly memorable. Although the current situation doesn’t allows for the famous Gold Lounge lavish buffet, we appreciated the revisited complementary Chef’s Plate served at our door at ~5:30pm, a conservative yet fun appetizer plate perfect for the apéro. Wine and spirit were available to purchase (additionally to the standard in-room mini bar). Thank you for another fabulous stay, especially during those tough times. Fairmont Royal York will be forever our home away from home. We just wish we would live there. Read less

Well, it certainly isn’t now. Just a few weeks has shown the decline in this once-great hotel. Look how much money they’re saving! The services and in-room dining have taken a dive. Get a hamburger for the same price as a steak anywhere else. At least the service has suffered (that isn’t a typo)
