The hotel

Set on one of Antigua's many beautiful beaches, this exclusive adults-only hideaway offers guests a fabulous combination of superior service, Caribbean cuisine and rustic luxury in a very natural setting. Much of the architecture here is inspired by the French artist Gauguin. The charming, refurbished individual suites have their own splash pool and are surrounded by lush gardens and views of the lagoon. There is a peaceful, natural lagoon which is host to rare birds, pelicans and herons. There are three excellent open-air restaurants, all beachfront, offering intimate, candlelit dining of excellent quality. Ismay's Restaurant, offers a higher quality dining experience to be shared for that special occasion, whilst the more laid-back Barefoot Grill is a great place to enjoy a tasty quesadilla made with resort grown produce. At sunset, hors d'oeuvres are served at the bar, which overlooks the sea from under its Tahitian-style roof. There are activities such as fishing on the lagoon, non-motorised water sports and a recently expanded gym, but reclining with a novel on the beachfront deck from the library is equally as popular.

We were looking for a special vacation destination to celebrate a milestone birthday and our wedding anniversary. While researching, we came across several references to a top notch travel agent, Ruth Demuth from Tripguy Travel, we contacted Ruth for help and after understanding what we were looking for she recommended Galley Bay resort in Antigua. Once we decided to book Ruth took care of everything, she is very thorough, responds to emails around the clock, and provides amazing customer service. I wouldn’t hesitate to use Ruth’s services in the future. The resort is beautiful and with only 95 rooms the service is very personalized. We were in a premium beachfront room on the ground floor (room 87) and the view was incredible! Our room was at the very end of the resort so we had beautiful plush greenery on the end side which added privacy. One issue I found with the ground room floor was noise from the people above, who woke us up most mornings at 6:30 am. When I spoke to the people they apologized and said they didn’t think they were loud, so maybe just poor sound insulation. I would strongly consider the top floor if I returned. Because the resort is small we could walk to the restaurants within 5 minutes either along the beach or along the garden paths behind our room, which were immaculate. The beach was beautiful, the nicest beach I’ve ever seen, such clean white sand with beautiful terquios water. Great gym, yoga studio right on the beach, and great water sports (free sailing lessons on hobi cat, paddle boards, kiyaks). One vendor was allowed on property (Victoria) and she was very helpful in selling clothes for gifts back home - she went an extra mile for us and we really appreciated her help. We took a 1/2 day excursion with Captain Sean who has a private sailboat and will take 4-8 passengers on a sailing tour, snorkelling, and lunch and drinks on his boat - that was fun and nice that there were not a ton of people, however I do think it would be a little better if we stopped at a beach to eat instead of eating on the boat (just a little tough to negotiate eating and drinking in a small space, while on wavy water!). Our room was nice but the mattress was bad - felt like we were beat up by the morning. However I was very impressed that when I asked guest services for a foam covering (or something) the mattress was replaced that evening. The newer mattress was an improvement (still not great but better). Fridge was stocked daily but be specific on what you want (leave a note) because they don’t always leave water. Food was good, there are 2 main restaurants (one does breakfast lunch dinner and the other does lunch and dinner) there’s also a grill where you can grab lunch (more casual). There is a third restaurant (The Ismay) where you pay, but we didn’t go there as reviews indicated it wasn’t much different than the others. The Gagaun is by far the better restaurant for lunch and dinner but beware that you do need reservations for dinner and they fill up fast as they have less than 20 tables. Dress code is in effect, which I do not have a problem with at all, as most resorts do have dress codes for dinner. I felt it was a little excessive when one evening my husband and I were not having dinner (we just weren’t hungry) but decided to go to the Managers party which was at the rum shack (a small little “shack” that serves rum drinks). My husband was wearing a dress shirt with a collar and a pair of nice shorts. He was told that he wasn’t allowed to wear shorts - they didn’t ask him to change but we found it a bit much that this was called out when we weren’t in a restaurant. On a separate occasion I was told at breakfast that my beach cover up was too short (it covered my behind and I am a conservative person, so I felt a little embarrassed by this), which leads me to my next topic - this resort definitely caters to the older folk (when I was told about my cover up the waitress said “the old people like to complain”). The majority of the guests are returning seniors, which we didn’t mind as we did meet some people our age (we are 50ish). The only other issue I would highlight is regarding food options, they don’t have somewhere you can go in the evening if you want a snack, I.e., after dinner (or even if you want something casual instead of dinner) the barefoot girl closes at 4:30. I would suggest they keep it open till 10 or 11. So to sum it up, we would go back, staff was very friendly, they recognized my birthday and our anniversary with complimentary bottles of Champaign and overall the place is top notch. Read less

However if you are under 50 or feel like under 50 this hotel would not be your choice unless you want to do nothing for your stay. If you peace and quite and good food and a room right on the beach then this might be your ideal choice. After a week I felt like I had cabin fever and needed to leave, but couples who like to do nothing just keep coming back. So my advise is to work out if you want to do nothing or not. I’m told that the hotel offers good value all inclusive. All the food is brought to your table and does not feel like your typical all inclusive. It’s far away from anything and a lot of visitors just love this. Rooms are spacious and all face the sea. So if you fancy doing nothing, this hotel would be a good choice to watch the days go by Read less

This had to have been the most laid back beach holiday I can recall in a long time. Cuba and Mexico were always a bit busier however Galley Bay is secluded and calm. The service staff is excellent, respectful and very polite. An adults all inclusive so it's quite peaceful. Meals, plus tea time at 4 pm, were measured but never inadequate. There's a full time bar (opens later in the morning) throughout the day, a beach grill and main restaurant (Sea Grape); two other restaurants at opposite ends of the beach require evening reservations. Gaugin's for lunch was the best dining experience so highly recommended. US$45 fee for dining at Ismay's. Great sandy beach, pool, garden (look for the humming birds and mongoose), fully equipped gym, spa, souvenir shop and jewelry store within the compound. Beach hobby cats (with lessons from friendly staff), wind surfing boards, stand up boards, beach kayaks and snorkelling gear are available on the beach. Live bands every night. This isn't a rip-it-up party resort. When we were there, I noticed most of the patrons were middle to older age and many told me they returned here year after year. We were told that the resort was pretty well booked but you never got the impression that is was crowded. I would add that this place is wheel chair accessible. There were several guests in wheel chairs, a couple on the dance floor I recall, and staff very accommodating. Although there was enough to eat some times the evening menu fell a little short of the mark in terms of choice and portion size. A couple times we were presented with a wine menu with listed bottle prices. Don't bother. Go with the free plonk by glass and you'll be fine. I'd recommend the place for those wanting to get away, unwind and enjoy the beach, sun and wind in peace. Well done. Read less

This was our second time at Galley Bay and we hope to make it an annual thing. Nothing over the top here, only comfortable accommodations with fantastic views, friendly and helpful staff, varied menu options and just the right amount of “I don’t have to do ANYTHING!”
