Galley Bay Resort & Spa

Antigua, Caribbean

Virgin rating

The hotel

Set on one of Antigua's many beautiful beaches, the Galley Bay Resort & Spa offers guests a fabulous combination of superior service, Caribbean cuisine and rustic luxury in a very natural setting. Much of the architecture here is inspired by the French artist Gauguin. The charming individual suites have their own splash pool and are surrounded by lush gardens and views of the lagoon. There are three excellent open-air restaurants, all beachfront, offering intimate, candlelit dining of excellent quality. Ismay's Restaurant offers a higher quality dining experience to be shared for that special occasion, whilst the more laid-back Barefoot Grill is a great place to enjoy a tasty quesadilla made with resort grown produce. At sunset, hors d'oeuvres are served at the bar which overlooks the sea from under its Tahitian-style roof. There are activities such as non-motorised water sports and a recently expanded gym, but reclining with a novel on the beachfront deck from the library is equally as popular.

Rarely do you go somewhere and the reality is as good as it's been made to look in the travel agent's photos, but Galley Bay really is that stunning - both the beach and the resort rooms & amenities. The room was lovely and right on the beach, which is very quiet and peaceful, with no need for towels out at dawn to get a sun lounger. The welcome was warm, the staff friendly but unintrusive, the food and drink great - everything a la carte and prepared to order, not sitting on hot plates on a buffet. The breakfasts are incredible and it's definitely worth trying all the different restaurants in the resort across the other meals of the day. This is a resort with a relaxed pace, not a hectic entertainment schedule, and that's exactly what we were looking for. There was live music each evening (some bands better than others!) and yoga in the stunning yoga pavilion overlooking the ocean. We tried sea-kayaking which was great, but unfortunately the wind was in the wrong direction the week we were there to be able to try the hobie cat sailing. We had a wonderful restorative week, which was exactly what we needed, and hope to be able to go back one day. Read less

Once again another fabulous holiday in Galley Bay. The staff, with maybe one of two exclusions, are always helpful and friendly and seem vested in ensuring their guests have a wonderful holiday. The accommodation is second to none, spacious, beautifully appointed suites, with huge bathrooms with ‘his and her’ basins and showers and an enormous bath. Enormous fluffy towels are provided along with bath robes and slippers. There are lots of drawers for clothes and more hangers in the wardrobe than even I could use. The grounds are beautifully kept with abundant flower and fauna and 3 excellent restaurants. The menus offer generous portions of meat, fish and vegetarian options and are changed daily. The meals delicious, well balanced and beautifully presented. Wines are of good quality and include sparkling/champagne and a huge variety of premium spirits. My only criticism is that they are invariably served by the glass which means that the white wine tends to be warmer than desired, it seems a shame that they don’t offer to leave the bottle chilling at your table if desired. However a very small criticism on what is overall a wonderful experience which consistently ensures our return, Read less

Galley Bay is beautiful!! We picked this resort because of the great reviews I had read. We were looking for somewhere special to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary. The grounds are pristine, clean with lots of flowers and greenery. It was tropical around each building, villa and the Gaugin huts too. We chose the Gaugin suite for our stay because it was spacious, very different and we had our own plunge pool. However, a little too rustic for me. We had issues with a small uninvited guest (bird) and a leaky roof. The manager was kind, quick to address it and moved us to a different room beachfront. Which I highly recommend! We loved our beachfront room and although not as spacious as the Gaugin the ocean view was beautiful. The food all week was delicious. No matter the meal or the restaurant option the food was excellent. Even the casual barefoot grill was delicious. Galley Bay caters to a much older crowd and many repeat guests which says a lot. The sun sets early at 6:30pm. In the many reviews we read it often mentioned how friendly the staff was. Unfortunately we did not experience that. There were some friendly conversations during our stay but most often service was not with a smile. Our worst experience was when we had scheduled a private beach dinner at Ismays through guest services. When we showed up we were told there was a mixup and we had to leave because they were booked that night too. No big deal we thought so we picked the next night to celebrate our 40th on the beach with a private table again. The next night similar issue but we confirmed 7pm but they had our reservation at 8pm?? That’s ok we decided to wait and have a drink vs leaving again and walking back. The manager kept telling me I must be very anxious to show up so early, but we were not early, and they mixed up our reservation once again. No apology and she just laughed at us. When they finally seated us we were whisked to a side entrance down an unlit dark path past a gazebo and we had to hop over a ditch to get to the beach juggling our drinks. Two other couples had a private beach table and walked down a beautiful candle lit path but not us. It felt like we were being punished-and we were. Despite that silliness my hubby and I enjoyed our dinner on the beach. We loved staying right on the ocean and snorkeling right off the beach. The beaches were beautiful and clean. The water was just amazing colors. There was entertainment most nights but very very soft music and very mellow. If you are expecting steel drums and dancing then don’t come here. The singer our first night was especially talented and we enjoyed her the most. Again, if quiet time is needed then Galley Bay is for you. Even the pool has no music signs posted. Again, beautiful resort but due to the curt staff in general we give 3 stars. Read less

My husband and I returned for our sixth stay at this wonderfully relaxing and peaceful resort, which was just what was needed after covid lockdowns. Our deluxe room had been updated and had a modern bathroom and shower, together with full length patio doors from which you could both see and hear the most sensational views and sounds of the ocean. Wow! The coffee shop had also had a make over which was great. But what set this holiday above others here, was the truly impressive, varied and flavoursome food prepared by Nathaniel and his team at the Seagrape restaurant. It is hard to single out any staff but a particular thank you to Sonia and Pearl who had huge smiles and served us daily. Both my husband and I have piled on the weight and are now on serious diets since our return. It was a pleasure to speak with Cedric, who is always visible and welcomes feedback. The wildlife always entertains, especially the ducks at breakfast. We would seriously recommend this resort to any couples looking for a holiday in which to unwind, where they will receive great service and a choice of three restaurants (Ismays incurs a small charge). This resort is not for large groups or people expecting to party late into the night. We are already counting down the days until we may be able to return again. It is lovely to feel safe and secure travelling again and to see the island of beautiful Antigua opening up. We always feel like we are coming home at this resort and which that everyone could try it at least once. Huge thank you Galley Bay. Read less

Beach was lovely, but rocky at parts. View of the sunset…glorious! Water was nice, but can be rough Food was good, except at the shack. Atmosphere is truly an older crowd. Mostly 65+, a lot of Brits. My husband and I prefer quiet, small, boutique resorts, but the vibe here among guests is a little too unenthusiastic, let’s say? Frozen drinks were not super and on their website they list top shelf liquors but I asked for 3, none of which they had. Service, for the most part was the biggest let down. Disheartening to say the least. Natasha was a pleasure and super sweet, Derrick at the front was helpful as well. Pearl was great just because she was probably the only one who gave you a big smile and greeting every time even if you were 25ft away. Not sure where everyone sees this “no tipping” policy. If you go to Sandals it’s everywhere on their site. Someone mentioned that the employees are paid “very well” in their review, not sure how they would know that. My feeling is the opposite. Couple that with the lack of tips they receive then I get why workers are not too helpful or friendly. I feel like the price of the resort is Sandals level, with service and expectations of what you get from a Mariott chain all inclusive. It’s not worth the price you pay at all. Perhaps Galleybay needs to step up and pay their employees better…happier workers, happier guests. Read less
