Galley Bay Resort & Spa

Antigua, Caribbean

Virgin rating

The hotel

Set on one of Antigua's many beautiful beaches, the Galley Bay Resort & Spa offers guests a fabulous combination of superior service, Caribbean cuisine and rustic luxury in a very natural setting. Much of the architecture here is inspired by the French artist Gauguin. The charming individual suites have their own splash pool and are surrounded by lush gardens and views of the lagoon. There are three excellent open-air restaurants, all beachfront, offering intimate, candlelit dining of excellent quality. Ismay's Restaurant offers a higher quality dining experience to be shared for that special occasion, whilst the more laid-back Barefoot Grill is a great place to enjoy a tasty quesadilla made with resort grown produce. At sunset, hors d'oeuvres are served at the bar which overlooks the sea from under its Tahitian-style roof. There are activities such as non-motorised water sports and a recently expanded gym, but reclining with a novel on the beachfront deck from the library is equally as popular.

Wow. I'll start by saying we stayed at two other resorts in Antigua during the same vacation, Escape at Nonsuch and Hammock Cove. Honestly, Galley Bay surpassed even the latter 5 star resort because the service and vibe on this resort made us feel welcome as soon as we arrived and always comfortable. By far this was our favourite hotel out of the three. Room - recently modernised, we had a premium beachfront suite. Very comfortable bed, spacious room with sitting area, beautifully done seperate bathroom with shower and tub, double vanity. Safe, hairdryer, iron and ironing board, snorkels, complimentary water canteens (love these!), allocated beds on the beach, outdoor shower, beds on the terrace too. Also front stoop has chairs too. Ice and water machines available throughout property. Mini bar replenished daily with beer, wine, sodas, water. Welcome sparkling wine was lovely! Housekeeping were lovely and did an excellent job. Beach - stunning water and sand. We did have green flag days generally so maybe lucky but water was beautiful. Snorkeling was good - saw a lobster! Pool - we didn't use it, but looked like a good area Restaurants - food surprised us as we didn't think it would necessarily be the same as Hammock but it was truly delicious and never missed the mark. We ate at all 3 restaurants although didn't get to try the beach bar food. I recommend asking for the ducana - comes as a whole dish and a real flavour of Antigua. Breakfast was fab (eggs creole!!), lunch and dinner all great. We bought some of their hot sauce in the gift shop too! Our one niggle is the dress code and as small as this may seem, unless it changes, we probably won't return. Men have to wear trousers. We understand that it is pleasant to have a formal dress code in one or two restaurants but for all 3, in particular the Sea Grape, it made dinner a rather uncomfortable affair. I'd suggest moving to tailored shorts in at least Sea Grape. Drinks - main bar is good, nicely situated. Rum bar was great fun! Service on the beach is minimal - they pass by maybe twice a day but no problem if you have a mini bar! Cocktails are super strong - not for us but wine was good, as was the beer. Cafe had good coffee, cookies and ice cream. Staff - the reason we enjoyed our stay so much. Huge thank you to everyone, but in particular Ines at reception, Dasani at Sea Grape, Alfred the porter, Nikki at the rum bar and Denita who we saw at various restaurants. However, everyone, from security to gardeners were all friendly and made you feel at home. Fantastic, please don't change! Read less

The ocean, might I add, that you could hear the soothing crash of the waves clear as a bell at all times. Maybe the most surprising bonus was the live entertainment every night! The talent was incredible and truly felt so connected to the resort guests, who LOVED it every night. If you are looking to get spoiled rotten then go here. From the time you get on the property til the time you (sadly) have to leave, the team at Galley Bay make you feel so welcome. Thank you to Cedric the on-site GM who checked on us daily, and to the entire staff who were all so helpful. Read less

My wife and I have just returned from a wonderful two weeks in Antigua. From the moment Alfred drove us from Reception, we appreciated the beauty and calm of this resort and the feeling that we had chosen wisely grew every day, almost until the day we left (bad weather and one poor meal; sadly, our last; broke the trend). The food at Gaugan was lovely (thank you, Inga); the drinks we like were made to perfection (thank you, Denita, Sandy G and Affique); the facilities always clean; and the entertainment enjoyable. Furthermore, the resort has hung on to the dying tradition of an evening dress code, to which all guests adhered and made genuine effort to look smart and stylish in the restaurants. No wonder returning guests are a common feature. I was therefore surprised to see a number of recent negative reviews about Galley Bay. Factually these reviews are not wrong, but are, in my opinion, greatly overstated. Yes, there are a few staff in customer facing roles who don't come across as particularly friendly or helpful, but absolutely everyone else is a delight to meet and add greatly to their guests' happiness - Ebony in the vegetable garden; Pearl, Romario and Samantha in the restaurants; Kenya at Customer Services, are just a few examples of great ambassadors for the resort. Correct, there is less visibility of Managers walking the floor than at other top hotels, but most of the time staff have got everything under control, if anything requires fixing/adjusting. Galley Bay is a beautiful and chilled holiday destination that thankfully attracts similarly-minded visitors. It is not a place for fast food and loud manic activity, therefore it is a place for us and we look forward to returning soon. Sorry that I've couldn't mention more names; there just too many worthy of praise. Read less
