Galley Bay Resort & Spa

Antigua, Caribbean

The hotel

Set on one of Antigua's many beautiful beaches, the Galley Bay Resort & Spa offers guests a fabulous combination of superior service, Caribbean cuisine and rustic luxury in a very natural setting. Much of the architecture here is inspired by the French artist Gauguin. The charming, refurbished individual suites have their own splash pool and are surrounded by lush gardens and views of the lagoon. There are three excellent open-air restaurants, all beachfront, offering intimate, candlelit dining of excellent quality. Ismay's Restaurant offers a higher quality dining experience to be shared for that special occasion, whilst the more laid-back Barefoot Grill is a great place to enjoy a tasty quesadilla made with resort grown produce. At sunset, hors d'oeuvres are served at the bar which overlooks the sea from under its Tahitian-style roof. There are activities such as non-motorised water sports and a recently expanded gym, but reclining with a novel on the beachfront deck from the library is equally as popular.

My husband and I traveled to Galley Bay Resort for 10 nights from April 24th through May 4th. We went on the recommendation of a family member who had been there twice. We were pleased to meet many people there who were on their 3rd and 4th trips to this resort. That speaks volumes. The resort was beautiful and lush. Our room was #87 which is the last room on the left side of the resort. The location was perfect for us as we ate at the Gaugin restaurant almost everyday for lunch or dinner, so it was an easy walk. Our room was a deluxe beachfront suite. There was lots of closet space, a mini fridge, two full size sofas for watching TV, a king size bed and a huge bathroom with double sinks and a double shower. We were very happy with the room itself. You can be as busy or laid back as you would like. I read 4 books and stayed in my beach or pool chair most of the time. The ocean is beautiful and the pool was fantastic with bar service. I do have to mention that the service overall at the resort was impeccable. Anything you want or need, the staff is on it. One example: our room air conditioner was not working as well as it should have on our arrival. They REPLACED the entire unit the next day. We were floored! For the downsides: the mixed drinks were inconsistent quality. Every time I ordered a Cosmopolitan from whatever bar I was at, it was always different tasing and not in a good way. You have to ask for a higher end vodka or their default is Smirnoff. I eventually gave up and just drank wine with dinner every night. The food tasted delicious and I cannot fault the taste, or quality.. Our complaint was with the portion sizes and how the dishes were described and presented. Everything seemed to be deconstructed in some way. We realized after being there for a day or so that whatever dish you order may not be exactly what you are expecting to arrive at the table. My husband ordered double entree portions, which was never a problem for them to provide. The staff is incredibly friendly! I hope this review help your decision making. Read less

After getting fully vaccinated , we did not hesitate to go to Galley Bay . We no longer count the many times we have been here like most repeaters. There is a reason the resort has garnered numerous excellent reviews . We didn't hesitate to "come home". The resort always has a castaways feel-- even when fully booked , you always feel secluded, private and have the place to yourself. . The superb staff is friendly, courteous and polite. The guests feel like neighbors who say hi or hello when you pass each other on the flower filled paths. Covid safety rules on masks , hand sanitizers are imposed at the resort and airport. There is a curfew of 8:00 pm on the island in effect when we stayed in April but not at the resort. While it's true that certain activities have been temporarily curtailed for Covid safety (i.e. no rum shack, no Seagrape breakfast and lunch buffet , no library, ) , everything is in flux as the management constantly deals with the latest Covid requirements . We never felt these changes took away from the magic of the resort--- the gorgeous beach, the sunsets and nighttime ambience of music while sipping drinks on the pastel adirondack chairs . Our thanks to Cedric, Alex , Amanda, Mike Ray , Sherilynn, Sadie and the many friendly staff that make Galley Bay one of a kind and truly special. Read less

My sister and brother in law asked us to go on a beach vacation with them this April, and we chose to go back. It was even better than the first time (Covid restrictions withstanding) . The people there are just so sincere, fun and open. Unlike many other resorts I have been to where you cannot get the flavor of the island, just the condoned behavior of the resort employees. We had many open discussions with the staff about the changes Covid has made on the island, as well as joking and story telling. The cottages are so comfortable, and the beach is magnificent. We did a day trip to English Harbor for lunch at the Yacht Club, but did a boat cruise with Captain Shawn for a day. Derrik, John the gardener, and the rest of the staff were some of the best hosts you will find in the Caribbean. The food, drink and atmosphere are also some of the best. If you like flowers and flowering plants, the landscaping is absolutely fantastic. I took so many photos of the flowers! I am sure we will be back, and hopefully the Rum Bar will be open for us! Next to Jade Mountain, this is the best so far in 48 years of Caribbean beach searching. Read less

I think the wines are only average. The entertainment on many nights generally entailed singing & musicians - doing covers of American/popular music. There were pretty good. Service wants to be helpful. Lots of bugs outside...but that’s the Caribbean for you. We also had a number of dying bees/roaches in our room over the course of our stay. Not sure how/why that happened...but better dead than alive. Captain Sean was expensive but enjoyable. I’d also recommend the water sports in case you’re interested in any of those (many of those options are complimentary). Read less
