Galley Bay Resort & Spa

Antigua, Caribbean

The hotel

Set on one of Antigua's many beautiful beaches, the Galley Bay Resort & Spa offers guests a fabulous combination of superior service, Caribbean cuisine and rustic luxury in a very natural setting. Much of the architecture here is inspired by the French artist Gauguin. The charming, refurbished individual suites have their own splash pool and are surrounded by lush gardens and views of the lagoon. There are three excellent open-air restaurants, all beachfront, offering intimate, candlelit dining of excellent quality. Ismay's Restaurant offers a higher quality dining experience to be shared for that special occasion, whilst the more laid-back Barefoot Grill is a great place to enjoy a tasty quesadilla made with resort grown produce. At sunset, hors d'oeuvres are served at the bar which overlooks the sea from under its Tahitian-style roof. There are activities such as non-motorised water sports and a recently expanded gym, but reclining with a novel on the beachfront deck from the library is equally as popular.

After waiting nearly two years to make this trip, our expectations were way up there. Galley Bay delivered and exceeded our hopes for a relaxing, low-key, and near-perfect week. For a frazzled, stressed out couple, this place was what the doctor ordered. We’ve been to mid-size and large all inclusive resorts in Mexico and the Dominican Republic. Galley Bay is low key, small, quiet, beautiful, and unplugged by design. If you want a party, go somewhere else. If you want to escape the world in a warm, friendly, beautiful place then by all means go to Galley Bay. The grounds, suite, beach, water, staff, amenities were unbeatable. They are running at well under capacity because of Covid so not all restaurants were up and running, nor were a few of the other amenities. However, having the run of the place with a few other fun and friendly guests was a fair trade in my opinion. The food was very good and plentiful. We didn’t come here looking for 5 star dining, though. No buffet lines and gracious service were plenty good for us. You can drink yourself into rehab if you desire, but this isn’t really that kind of place. Finally, you can’t beat the kind and hard working staff at Galley Bay. You can tell they care and are glad to have you visit. They take great pride in their slice of paradise and treated us well. Bottom-line: we look forward to returning. Hopefully soon! Read less

We have just returned from the most wonderful time at Galley Bay, one of the best all inclusive resorts that we have ever been to. The resort is smaller than some others which gives it a friendly feel and the staff are so friendly and helpful, going out of their way to do anything for you. It is situated on a stunning stretch of sandy beach which is secluded, there are no other hotels along this beach. We arrived on the second day they had reopened after being closed for 7 months and everywhere felt like it had been freshly painted and covid safety restrictions in place making us feel very safe, wearing masks in public areas, we could take off our mask when seated, all the staff wear a mask constantly. We stayed in a Premium Deluxe Beachfront room where we could walk straight out of our room on to the soft sand and into the clear sea, perfect. The room was large, with a large, comfy bed and quality linens, two sofas and fridge, sink, tea and coffee facilities. We had sun loungers on our terrace and sun beds under a parasol on the sand near the waters. edge. The bathroom was massive, with two showers and a huge corner bath. The air con worked well. The food was amazing, it was like eating at a high end restaurant every evening. Only one restaurant was open at a time due to the small numbers of guests, but that was fine, we ate at Sea Grape 6 evenings, Gaugin 2 evenings. The menu changed daily. There were lots of tasty choices on the breakfast menu too. For lunch we went to the Bare Foot Grill as we could sit there in swimwear, casual choice of burgers, wraps, catch of the day etc. The drinks and cocktails were delicious, lovely setting at the Tee Pee Bar overlooking the sea (the Rum Shack was not open) and friendly staff wander round the pool taking drinks orders. The pool was lovely, it had a relaxing waterfall and the sunbeds around it were at least 2m apart. I thoroughly recommend the yoga with Mackenzie every morning at 8am, beautiful setting overlooking the sea, Mackenzie was lovely and all the equipment is sanitised between classes. We enjoyed playing tennis (we took our own racquets and balls but I believe that they have some for guests to use) We did lots of fishing in the lagoon using the resorts rods, lots of bites but the fish were too big to land! We had fun playing croquet with the brand new set, and played pool a few evenings. We borrowed bikes and helmets but the bikes had seen better days so we did not go far. Everything was sanitised between guests. One morning we took a taxi to Cedar Valley Golf Course (25 min drive $50 return taxi fare) Galley Bay had two sets of brand new clubs that they lent us, would recommend this. Unfortunately we didn't get a chance to use the watersports as on a couple of calm days we went along at 3.30pm to take out a paddle board and were told they closed at 4pm, they didn't want us taking them out for just 20 minutes. Then the last 4 days the water was rough and the red flag was flying. A would like to say a big 'thank you' to all the staff at Galley Bay for making the resort an exceptional place to visit, your friendly manner and hard work make this the best! Read less

Never crowded, great food, excellent drinks and a view that is unreal. Best things to know: go for the Superior Deluxe Beachfront room, go on Captain Sean’s snorkel excursion, the waves are too rough for swimming, bring ear plugs because the frogs are LOUD and sound like fire alarms. We can’t wait to go back! Read less

This was our third visit to Galley Bay and it was as wonderful as ever! We are always amazed at how the staff remembers guests that have stayed there before. When I mentioned this to a waitress one morning at breakfast, she smiled and replied "because you're family". We feel like we're visiting friends and family when we come to Galley Bay. The managers are visible every day asking guests how their stay is going, not just during Covid, but every time we've visited. If there's any problem, it will be fixed right away. Guests are asked to wear masks while entering a restaurant or walking around the resort. At this point, I think everyone is used to wearing a mask anyway so it's not a big deal. Galley Bay also provides you with masks with the Galley Bay logo on them and they're very comfortable to wear. The food is outstanding at Galley Bay. Our favorite restaurant is the Gauguin and we were happy it was open on our last night there. We visited the first week the resort had reopened due to Covid so it wasn't open until our last night. The nightly entertainment by the local bands was nice, and it's easy to meet other guests here. We usually stay in a Premium Beachfront room and we love being able to walk out our back door and step into the sand. The beach was as beautiful as ever. We can't wait to return to Galley Bay! If you have any questions, send me a message. Read less

We are really lucky to have been to many amazing places in many countries over the years, and on this trip we have experienced 3 different resorts. We definitely saved the best until last, Galley Bay 🌺 Before I talk about the resort, I want to call out the first class Covid safety measures here at Galley Bay. If you want a vacation and are concerned about safety measures, you don’t need to give it a second thought. These guys have put a lot of thought into everything, and it shows. There is also a great deal of thought and attention that goes into the service style at the resort. The personalised, warm and authentic service sets Galley Bay apart; and it’s a team effort. Everyone cares about your experience, right from the very top. I have never in all my travels seen a General Manager so present and engaged. If you bump into Alex, you will see why his team deliver excellent service. He is a first class hotelier, with attention to detail, who exudes the Caribbean warmth that makes you want to book your next trip whilst you are still here 🏝 And now the resort, it is stunning. Beautiful manicured grounds, a lake to cycle round (to burn off the cocktails) a beautiful beach and fabulous rooms. The quality and design of the furnishings are first class and all the rooms are amazing. After a tough 7 months of work, we like private and secluded, and the Gauguin suites are just amazing. I feel like I am in Tahiti and the Caribbean at the same time. The beds are super comfy, high quality linen and bath towels. A stocked mini fridge, including bottles of wine. A kettle, coffee making machine, milk in the fridge; they have thought of everything. We have our own plunge pool, a beautiful outside garden and really comfortable loungers. As I’m writing this, I can see my husband asleep on one of them 😊 Food - wow. We like food with flavour and they serve amazing food here, the best I have ever had at an all inclusive resort. It is high end restaurant standard and I am going to happily gain a few kilos 😁 That and the cocktails, oh, and the champagne 🍾 😊 In summary, Galley Bay is superb. There is a relaxed, yet high quality feeling to the resort, and we will definitely be coming back. Alex and team, a huge thank you 🙏🏻 Reviewing a resort on your second day speaks volumes. I hope you guys have a great winter and we look forward to seeing you very soon. Read less
