My one-star rating is because of: - numerous plumbing issues - overt decision by the hotel to NOT inform patrons about the issues - loss of time, sleep, relaxation/enjoyment of facilities due to the Reef's (in)actions - the fact that the Reef is the farthest hotel from the water rides, making it much less convenient for families with young kids - lack of breakfast options. Yes, we knew this and planned by ordering from instagopher ahead of time. Read on for details- We stayed here for 5 nights in early November 2023 with 3 other families. Three of the families have young kids. Two of the other families stayed in the nicer suites. We had a room booked with 2 queen beds and a balcony. We had multiple plumbing issues. Now, before you start in on “well, what did you eat” jokes, you should know that the our sink exploded in the middle of our first night there. This was after we noticed low pressure in the bathroom. For a few hours at night, we heard what sounded like gurgling noises coming from the sink area of the kitchenette. Then, at around 2:30/2:45AM, there was a louder almost ‘popping’ sound and black gunk had spewed out of our sink and onto the surrounding surfaces (pic attached). I went downstairs at 3AM to let the front desk know. The lady at the desk wasn't surprised and mentioned something about “plumbing” and “water” issues throughout "that part" of the hotel. Something they neglected to tell anyone. She asked me to wait while she contacted the “engineer.” As I waited, a man came downstairs complaining of the same issue. Turns out his room was exactly 5 floors above mine. The lady at the desk reconfirmed that there are issues with the water line in that part of the hotel. You know, a pretty important fact that they decided not to tell any of their customers. I asked to be moved to a room without plumbing issues and as she looked for one, she also confirmed that ALL of the rooms on the double-digit floors were without hot water. A fact they also neglected to tell customers (we know this because two of the families in our party were on those floors and were not told). While I was told that we could be moved as quickly as that moment (the middle of the night), I asked for the morning since I didn’t want to wake my kids. After losing hours of sleep, I spent a few more hours in the morning re-packing while my family went out to enjoy the pool/beach. Turns out they then couldn’t move us until 4PM! We were moved to another room but were unable to get a room similar to ours which had 2 queen beds since those are all in the -911 rooms (they didn’t tell me that), which all had plumbing issues at the time. We were moved to a room with a King bed & pullout sofa (not ideal with the kids, but that’s what they gave us). Although that had a much better view as, apparently, all of the double queen bed rooms do not have a pool view. For the last 2 days of our stay, the toilet in our new room wouldn’t flush. It took 3 different plumbers to come by to finally fix the issue (the chain inside the tank was broken). Additionally, I think it's important to note that while the rooms look nice at first glance, the cleanliness of the bathrooms left a lot to be desired. There was plenty of mildew around the stand-up shower, in corners, and on spots on the ceilings. Separately, we couldn't figure out why there was a window into the bathroom that could be opened from outside the bathroom. Something to think about if you have kids who might be tempted to open it , or if you have any voyeurs in your party. We did also ask for help trying to solve an issue we had cancelling part of a booking we made through Atlantis directly. Someone at the concierge desk called and said they were able to sort it out. Turns out…they did not. It took us one more month to get it sorted out. I will write a review of that on Atlantis separately. Ultimately, the Reef refunded us $350 at the end of our stay as compensation for the plumbing issues. I know it’s something and I appreciate that. However, the loss of sleep and time I could have spent with family and having fun and relaxing during a once-in-a-lifetime vacation can’t be recovered. All they had to do was not put people in rooms with KNOWN plumbing issues. Read less

Such a fun place. Expect the staff to be just plain rude. So smiles, no response to thank you’s and kinda just seem pissed to give you a towel. This is mostly from the women who work there. But the resort is so amazing.

We had very high expectations but were very disappointed with our stay. The first room we were in needed work. The bathroom door got stuck and my kid needed to climb out the bathroom window. We then got moved to another room but it was the wrong one. It also took forever to get it. When we finally got the right room the floor was sticky, the light in the bathroom was out and the bathroom door didn’t close properly. There was also dried feces on the floor. The sofa bed needed to be opened for the kids. We asked for it to be done but when we came back to the room at 8 or 9 at night it still hadn’t been done. The hotel itself is really expensive, it feels like they take advantage of you by raising prices. They give you water bottles to use at refill stations which have undrinkable water so you are forced to buy 10 dollar, 500 ml, water bottles plus 10% vat plus 15% gratuity that they tack on automatically on almost every purchase. Also, fun fact, if you charge things to the room there is an additional 10% tax you pay which they don’t bother telling you about. The staff is really nice but need to be micromanaged which I found annoying. The towels aren’t picked up around the resort leaving tons of chairs occupied but not really. Overall, our stay was really disappointed especially giving the price we pay. I wouldn’t recommend it. Read less

We stayed at the Reef from November 27th to December 2nd and had the most amazing time! From the moment we arrived the staff were super helpful, friendly and welcoming. The beach: Our favourite part of the hotel grounds was the beach that was just steps from the hotel lobby. We spent hours everyday just swimming in the shallow water and playing in the sand. There were so many types of fish swimming just a few feet from the beach, and even sea turtles! Aquaventure: Our little guy had a blast at aquaventure, especially Poseidon’s play zone. The slides in power tower and the Mayan temple were also super fun and pretty intense! Restaurants: We really enjoyed the food at the resort, especially shake shack and Murray’s deli. On our last night we went to chop stix for dinner and the food was delicious ! The staff were all super friendly, especially Ruby who checked in periodically with our little guy to compliment his colouring. The grounds, pools and beaches were all so beautiful and we will definitely be returning in the future! Read less
