Coconut Court Beach Hotel

Barbados, Caribbean

The hotel

About as ‘seaside’ as you can get, the Blades family have called this sand-hugging spot home for more than four decades. And they chose a pretty perfect beach for their hotel — which is probably why hundreds of Hawksbill marine turtles call it home too. As you’re here for the beach, the Blades have made sure you’re never far from it, whether you’re lazing on the free loungers, watching moonlight movies on the sands, soaking in the seafront pool and whirlpool, sipping frozen cocktails at the beach bar, or lingering over candlelit suppers at The Deck. The beach itself is lined with beautiful trees to provide natural shelter from the Caribbean rays, so those that don't wish to worship the sun need not worry. It’s not just by the beach though — it’s also steps from South Coast Boardwalk which links you to an array of shops, restaurants and Rockley Beach. The hotel also features a fun sports bar and grill; and has a free shopping shuttle to Bridgetown if you fancy some retail therapy. Above all else, do not forget to savour a Pirate Punch during one of the several 'happy hours' each day — a traditional Blades family recipe with a twist!

We stayed at this lovely hotel for just a week , but unlike other places , we felt chilled out and on holiday from day 1. I think the best way to do this review is to list the pros & cons.... Pros : Great atmosphere. Chilled, laid back. Great staff , they go out of their way to help. Fantastic beach, clean, lots of sunbeds and shade from palm trees if wanted. Food lovely. Great menu! Large room with great shower. Very clean. Happy hours. 2 for 1s cocktails all day Beach bar Good location , easy to get around. And last, but certainly not least , infact the highlight for us was 'Ted's Tours'. A great day out with the famous Ted himself. He shows you around the island , seeing bits you probably wouldn't see on an average tour , plus he has his own style which I won't spoil for you. Plenty of the island's famous rum too !! Cons: Room a bit dated ( but would come again and get upgrade as some recently been refurbished ) You have to get your own sunbed off pile on beach and drag them to where you want them. Not easy sometimes. Watch out for dodgy taxi drivers, ask for price 1st before you get in. The odd staff member has attitude. ( but most haven't) Pool area doesn't have umbrellas for sunbeds. Pool a little small ( but sea on doorstep) Can be noisy , depends where your room is I think.Tooting and loud traffic noise most of the night. ( though you sort of get used to it , we did ) Wouldn't be good for disabled guests, lots of stairs to and from bar & restaurant & pool and beach. But taking all of the above into account, the pros definitely, infact most certainly outweigh the cons and would thoroughly recommend this island and this hotel. We had a fabulous time !!!!! The staff is wonderful, polite, knowledgeable. for instance last year we went to the horse races, mentioned it to one of the breakfast staff, and within a few minutes, had some tips for the day! The Deck has good choices in food for lunch and dinner, and if you book direct, the complementary breakfast cant be beat. another perk for booking direct, the airport shuttle...both those items will save you money. The grounds are always tidy, the beach cannot be beat, lots of shade for those who chose it, and plenty of open areas also. plenty of close by places for those who enjoy a good walk, the racetrack, several places to eat, etc. Two bars with happy hours, a nice library cabinet, little gift shop, nice music nearly every night, and be sure and include a monday night in your stay, for the rum punch party. you will be able to check out the jewelry lady, Ms. Bethell with lovely reasonable items, and also the artwork of Mr. Everick Lynton. We have just returned from i believe our 4th visit to this hotel, and for me, this is perfection. Read less

Pretty much anything you want is here for breakfast from about 7-10 am. The hotel also has 2 bars---one on the beach and one inside. Happy hours are 2 times a day. A very friendly, family run hotel. We were very fortunate to stay here after arriving on the island to start medical school. Due to various issues with the school, our housing was lost and we were left with no place to live. After arriving on the island we were able to book 5 nights at Coconut Court, and the staff was beyond accommodating and helpful. We initially had booked a first floor room ocean view last minute which my girlfriend had been uncomfortable with due to being on the first floor(room was clean/she just does not like being ground level), but the staff re-accommodated us to a beautiful top floor ocean view room, and the hotel and staff could not have been any more friendly about it for us even though we had booked our room hours before. I cannot begin to express my gratitude and appreciation for staff at the hotel who helped us through the stressful time of searching for a place to live. Some recommendations while at the hotel: Breakfast was perfect, being able to sit out on the outside deck restaurant and eat next to a perfect ocean view. The service is slower than what we are used to in the US but not bad, and while staying not just here but anywhere in Barbados you are on island time, so be patient! The hotel rooms are kept very clean, and the ocean view rooms have picturesque views. Antonio is an amazing bartender, and if you are a surfer and ever need tips on Surf Spots, he is the perfect guy to talk to. We still go back to visit our friends at Coconut Court whenever we can, and if we ever need a hotel we know where to stay. If you are looking for an authentic Barbados Hotel this is the place to be. So firstly, the location from both port and airport is excellent, no lengthy journey to drive you crazy so big thumbs up to this 👍👍 I will do the plus points based on the star rating of the hotel. We were upgraded to the luxury Beach Front room on arrival of which the room was very spacious, the idea of it being luxury maybe a little over the top as the amenities were basic. No complimentary coffees or teas though 👎👎 The room was cleaned every day and cleaned very well, fresh towels etc. The hotel court was very clean and tidy and plenty of options to both soak up the sun and dip in a pool or spa. Also plenty of shaded areas to maybe cool down from the sun for a wee while. The bars and the restaurants were all clean and tidy and the staff generally courteous which always goes a long way to making you feel more relaxed. The beach and the sea were so nice despite the couple of days of seaweed but hey I grew up visiting kelp infested north east beaches so a little seaweed wasn’t going to spoil the sea experience of the Caribbean (seaweed cleared up quite quickly) . There were always plenty of loungers available on the beach and atmosphere was very chilled and allowed you to fully wind down. Lots of nice areas to stroll around and explore rock pools and see the crazy jumping crabs. I didn’t snorkel but lots of people seemed to be enjoying the snorkelling so it was presumably decent? Food that we had in the hotels was in general very good so you will get a 👍 for that, however there are some negatives which will follow 🙈. Plenty of drink options at the two bars if you like a tipple and with two happy hours then plenty of chance to party hard and let your hair down. Overall the hotel did offer some decent services and was always clean and tidy. The Rum Punch party was a nice occasion and got to meet the part owner for a chat, so I think that this would probably warrant a 👍👍👍 up. However there are some negatives, the buffet breakfasts were limited in my opinion and buffet generally means I get to choose how much food I want to put in my plate for the money spent (which as I was room only was very expensive something in the region of £15 per person) the table service was a little slow to offer coffee and teas and on one occasion we had to go up and ask for the service, I would say 👎👎for that. On the Sunday we paid for the breakfast and almost immediately the staff started to pack stuff away .. so we were even more limited and to be honest the front of house should of let us know that they were closing up earlier to prepare for the Sunday Buffet Lunch. This really was very disappointing as mentioned above the price is very expensive so would expect a full quota of options, but hey I guess these little things suppress the star ratings that apply to hotels. I will also mention that on the 3rd evening whilst ordering drinks Barman Ryan whom was different to the previous couple of nights informed us we needed to pay more American dollars for the exchange rate of which we were previously paying 1/2 the Barbados dollar... really? I didn’t pay what was going to be an extra 2 dollars more than on the previous nights and Ryan then tried to point out that he was merely informing us that you need to be wary that you may get charged extra in other establishments 🤔.. however that said he was pretty cheery after that initial faux pas. So I would probably say that both positives and negatives were even Stevens 👎👎👎 There are lots of establishments off site to visit in the evening too I won’t mention them all as you will probably already seen on others reviews that St Lawrence gap has many evening eateries and bars to wander in and out of. I did particularly like Jakes as I am a fully fledged carnivore so meat options were just up my street and there was a $5 dollar rum deal which was perfect. Again plenty to offer those who like to chop and change their dining experience. All in I thoroughly enjoyed my week here and would recommend for those who don’t like to be too snooty about places to stay to come and try it... I would probably go for one of the meals in deals and probably the book direct for free brekkie as I mentioned rather expensive for our hard earned GBP. Would I return ... probably not but then it is very rare I do return to the same place twice so don’t take that as a negative. P.s. The evening entertainment is a good mix of live music, karaoke ( for anyone who stayed in the timeline I was here I did Meatloaf song 🙈) and disco. If you decide to come or have already booked enjoy your hols .. I am sure you will be made most welcome here Read less
