We returned yesterday following a 10-day break at Sandals Barbados. The most stressful aspect of our holiday was worries based off reviews on this site, accordingly we reset our expectations from a previous Sandals vacation and vowed to make the most of a COVID impacted break. Hopefully some of this feedback can help future visitors to make the most of their stay. Arrival Barbados immigration is rightfully very thorough on COVID. To process quickly it is vital that you take printed documentation for Fit to Fly and Proof of vaccination. Don't rely on your phone! If you plan well, getting through all relevant checks should take about 20 minutes. Check-In Although rooms were not ready immediately (about 3pm) we were able to access facilities for the 2 hours it took to get our key. Take a change of clothes, the locker room has all you need to freshen up and then grab a bite to eat. During this time you will have to suffer the excruciating pain of the nose swab - but only to the count of 10 - take the pain, have a cry and move on. Rooms We stayed in Club Level Beachfront. The room was standard Sandals affair so furnished well, spacious with a large comfortable bed. It is the same as the rooms with the soaking tub on the floor above so I would struggle to see why to pay circa £300 more for that level. TV channels are limited but if you do plan to watch much TV you may be better staying at home and spending your money on a larger screen there! Pools The comments about Butlers taking all the decent sunbeds by 6am are pretty much right. But if you rise early there will still be some nice spots around 7am - after that you are going to struggle. The infinity pool fills up first but TBH we felt that was too loud and busy to enjoy. South Seas and Main Pool offered a nice mix of atmosphere and relaxation and sunbed options are a little easier. The swim-up bar of the main pool is not very well serviced so I would recommend the South Seas Pool as a good starting point unless you are a party animal, and then join the masses at the infinity pool. Restaurants 5 stars to both Butch's at which the choice and quality of food was exceptional, Chi was also up there for a great Asian selection. Of the other two places requiring reservations we didn't bother with Kimonos which had disappointed us at the Ochi Rios Sandals. The Parisienne was absolutely awful, managed very badly and the food was borderline inedible although the Sky Bar at its entrance is a great place for a pre-dinner drink. Of the other options both Soy and Bombay are not going to disappoint at all. The sushi at Soy is always good whilst Bombay offers a menu comparable to a good Indian restaurant in the UK. Reservations (if you don't have a butler) are tricky and it seems that, like us, most people managed to get bookings at any places they wanted but not during their first few days on site. Waiting times are nothing like what many reviewers suggest. The most time we waited was around 30 minutes during which time you can sit at the bar and enjoy free cocktails / spirits etc. Food was always served at standard restaurant speeds. Service The staff are doing an incredible job. You can see on occasion that there is a lack of experience as the resort builds back up to normal but that never stops them from trying their best and always having a friendly word to say. We felt that the people we heard complaining always felt more entitled than other guests and were unable to grasp the new world that we live in. Hats off to Sandals for doing a top job. Manage your expectations beforehand, show a little patience and understanding and you will have a great time there. Read less

I have just returned from Sandals that was booked for 2 weeks to celebrate my 50th Golden Anniversary with my husband and my family. We hoped we would be making wonderful memories together at this beautiful location. The beach and sea is amazing. The gardens are well kept and beautiful. We booked 10 nights in a ground floor walk out room and 4 nights in a swim up room. When we arrived at reception and met Shikira. She took us for Covid tests. We were then told that our cases were in our rooms, not the rooms we had booked and paid for. But “an upgrade” we were told. We had a vey long “discussion“ with Shikira telling her the reasons why we booked ground floor rooms was that my husband has difficulty walking. She was unsympathetic about our concerns so I asked to speak to her superior. She was not available till the next day. We reluctantly went to our rooms on the 3rd floor of block 6. Our room was so shabby not a 5 star room more like 2 star! (photo added) The next morning I went to meet Barbara Thomas, the Director of Guest Services to relate my disappointment and concerns. She said that my husband and I will be able to move to the room that were booked at 3 pm that day. My family will be able to move in 3 days. They didn’t want to live out of a suitcase that long so they reluctantly stayed in their room. At 3 pm I met Barbara again only to be told that the room wasn’t ready and probably we will move the following day! I was so angry and upset for booking this resort. The next day we were able to go to the room we had booked. It was lovely and as we expected. After 10 nights we were due to move to the swim up rooms for 4 nights. We were told to vacate our rooms at 11am and we will move at 4 pm. This again was not easy and after a”discussion “ with management we were told that the room will be ready at 2 pm. The swim up rooms were great and were really pleased we picked them. The entertainment, what there was, was amateurish. On many occasions I had to ask for clean towels and drinks to be replenished. Housekeeping and the concierge were impossible to reach on the room phone as the message was” there is no one to take your call.” Our room was sometimes cleaned late afternoon. The coffee machines at various locations did not work after 10pm. The food is generally very good but eating after 6.30pm meant a long wait to get our food. One of our waitresses apologised for the long wait as she was embarrassed. We told her it was not her fault, the management are to blame. All though this holiday there were so many problems that reflect on the bad management of this resort. We were told by Shikira that there is 90% occupancy. Some of the staff were very competent and lovely, others were not trained to do the jobs required. I read bad reviews before I left or this holiday and didn’t believe them. I thought some people complain at anything. I now know they were true. Many other guests I spoke to had similar or the same complaints that we had also. We would have got what we paid for if the management were competent and had run this resort at 50% capacity in this new “ Covid” world. Read less

This was our first experience staying at a Sandals Resort. I'd have to say that we were very disappointed. They were short staffed, so service was at a bare minimum. Although friendly, we'd often times only be offered one drink during the entire meal. At Portofino's, we waited an entire hour just get our appetizers. We also spoke with another couple who had made reservations at Portofino's and still had to wait an hour to be seated at their table. We were also very disappointed in the portion sizes of the meals. We were often left still hungry at the end of the meals. We did enjoy the flavors of the food though. Despite the tiny portions, all the food was delicious! Since this was our honeymoon, we decided to splurge a little bit and pay for the "couples romantic dinner on the beach." Well, they were late setting up the tables and the tiki torches, so we stood and waited for our table for approximately 30 minutes past the scheduled dinner time, we had no waiter assigned to us, so we had to wait for them to find someone, we were served warm champagne and then we were told that they didn't have a menu for us, so it was going to take much longer for us to get our dinner. Dinner was just O.K. for paying as much extra money as we did. My lobster wasn't even served correctly. It was still stuck to the inside of the shell and I had to dig through lobster legs to try and pry it out. Honestly, the lobster tasted 100 times better at Schooner's. Overall, I'm not sure if we'll give Sandals a second shot or not. We understand things are tough because of COVID-19, but don't fill the hotel to capacity if you don't have the staff to service it!! They even ran out of beer multiple times during the week we were there and then got attitude from the bartenders when asking when they would have more. Another couple tried to get more coffee for their room, but was told that there was a "coffee shortage." We even tried to get coffee from the lobby machines, however none of them worked. We do HIGHLY recommend the catamaran excursion though that you can purchase through the Sandals app. It was AMAZING! The staff was amazing, the food was amazing and the boat was beautiful! We even got to swim with a sea turtle!! 5 stars for the catamaran! Read less

We stayed at Sandals Barbados the first week October. We had a fabulous time. We want to put a shout out to our butlers, Monique, Marquita, and Cassie. When we arrived, we were greeted by Shamar in the Butler Lounge. Shamar made us feel welcome--from showing us where to get our COVID tests to getting us settled in for lunch until our room was ready. We thought the staff did a great job, considering they were somewhat short-handed and considering all the COVID restrictions. Note that the staff wore masks all the time, which helped make the guests feel comfortable, but I'm sure it also makes their job that much more challenging. We thought Sandals did a great job handling the testing; it was nice to get tested onsite after we arrived, rather than at the airport. There was a glitch with the lab on the last day, so our test results didn't arrive until the morning we were about to leave, but again we feel the staff did their best, given the circumstances. As for the stay itself, it was what you'd expect from a Sandals resort. The staff was hard-working and helpful, and we we had access to everything we wanted. I remember watching one of the bartenders working the beach-side bar. I don't think I've seen a harder working bartender, working in tight quarters (a small, beach-side bar), joking with customers, and still responding efficiently to all requests with no issues. We did the Cool Runnings sunset catamaran excursion, and it was a blast. We also rented a car onsite and explored the island on our own. Barbados is a gorgeous island, and when we got slightly lost, everyone we met was extremely helpful. Still a fan of Sandals; it was a great getaway from the world just when we needed it. Read less
