The Sandals Barbados and Royal Barbados are two separate resorts that are attached in the middle. You can easily walk between the two. The Royal is a much newer facility with updated amenities and restaurants. You can access all the amenities from either side, so if you want to save a 1000 easily, stay on the Sandals Barbados side and walk over to the Royal. The Royal has some great extras from the other Sandals we’ve been to. With a bowling alley, donut shop and craft beer bar we were impressed with what it had to offer. Be sure to stop at the sky infinity pool and rooftop bar for a drink. The food was underwhelming. The dinner at the French restaurant boasted chateau Briand and duck breast. The chateau briand was definitely the wrong cut of meat. As my husband had two small steaks that were overcooked. My duck breast was so chewy and tough I couldn’t finish it. It’s not the food itself, but the preparation that could use some work. After speaking with a new member of the management team who is diligently working to correct these issues we will check back in 4 or 5 years to see if service matches the beautiful atmosphere. Before I give you a simple list of pros and cons about this place, I just wanted to let you know that I would consider myself and my wife to be experienced world travellers. We have a real lust for 5 star travel and exclusive holidays in different locations around the world and feel that an honest review on this place by a well travelled couple, will hopefully deter you good people from parting with your cash for such below standard services. Pros: • Well maintained gardens and beach - cleaned and tidied daily • Good location - close to Oistins, St Laurence Gap and Bridgetown • Decent room size - if you are swim up club level and above • Bombay Club - amazing curry • Butch’s Chophouse - nice wagyu steak Cons: • Rude and arrogant staff that make you feel unwelcome and a burden - 50/50 some good, some really bad.. like kiss their teeth at you bad! • Restaurants, other than the ones I mention in my pros list, are disgusting and not even 3 star quality - nothing is fresh, not even the fish - as told by the waitress. I am beyond disappointed at the level of service and food here - terrible is an understatement (we ate out most evenings because the food was so shocking). • Atmosphere - there is none! No music in the evenings whatsoever - just noisy bird sounds that keep you awake all night. The bar areas become quite awkward and silent.. very strange, it’s like the resort gives up on you at the front door once it’s all paid for • Entertainment - non existent. There were supposed to be shows every evening on a main stage which never materialise. Instead, you’re left to either sit at a bar with no music or go back to your room • Frozen food - when I asked the waitresses what’s fresh on the menu, their response was, nothing sir it’s all frozen and comes from a warehouse. It’s almost laughable that it’s acceptable for them to blurt that out! • UHT milk - not even fresh milk??? WT actual F • Nurse station - I had a blocked ear and when I walked into the nurses quarter she was sat there with her feet up talking to her cleaner friend, who also had her feet up. They didn’t even move when I entered, just carried on talking. Before I could even tell the nurse what was wrong, she shouted out “it’s $250 to see the doctor” • Photos - this is a con. Photographers taking photos of you while you enjoy your stay. At first I thought this was a good idea, but then they just get in the way and constantly ask you, even at dinner! The worst part is they cost $25 per photo - yes per photo! An absolutely ripoff, as if you haven’t already paid the best part of 10k to stay here, they can’t throw in a few photos free of charge? Absolute joke • Drinks - depending on what bartender you get, the same drink is always different in taste, untrained teenagers running the bars here • Poolside Music - is beyond bad and only caters for staff and their needs. They happily ignore your requests for drinks while the grind on each other to really poor music choices • Chicken running around the pool - yes a grown man running round the pool in a chicken outfit being chased by a chef. It’s like something you would find at Margate or Southend, not a 5 star Caribbean resort! • Poor cleaning - despite being out all day most days, our room was almost always left a mess or not touched at all! The cleaners would come by around 6pm when you’re getting ready for dinner and ask if you need towels! I would have preferred a clean room with fresh sheets earlier thanks! A few towels doesn’t quite cut it I wish I had better things to say and I wish I hadn’t spent the best part of 15k on this holiday, but I did and I thoroughly regret it now. I am just hoping that this review opens the eyes to even one travelling couple so you don’t make the same mistake we did and waste your time and hard earned money on this place! Heed my warning please! Thanks, Draz Read less

I can honestly not understand the how there are so many 5 star reviews for this place. If you have ever stayed at a genuine 5 star hotel or experienced really good food previously then please, please do not stay here. You will be seriously disappointed. I have delayed writing this review until the last evening to ensure I am giving a full and fair review of our 12 nights here. The welcome team are a poor first impression, lots of staff all sitting around talking to each other ( you’ll find that a lot ), offered a cheap tacky bright blue cocktail while they real off a poorly rehearsed welcome speech and give you a tablet to check yourself in. Suitcases were delivered to our room after waiting for over an hour but missing one suitcase. No one ever came back with the missing suitcase so my husband had to go searching for it and found it by the entrance of the hotel. The food is my biggest complaint, the whole booking restaurants arrangement is a joke. If you are here for a week you won’t be able to book any of them as they are all full unless you are happy to eat at 9.30pm. However when you actually attend they aren’t full and they could absolutely take more bookings. Concierge are disinterested and unhelpful, generally you’ll find that a lot of the staff are like that. Breakfast is four options, two Buffett, two a la carte. Same food in all of them, the a la carte restaurants mean a 45 min wait for food. Buffett breakfast is very average, cooked for the masses and I eat better at home. Lunch options are far worse, nothing is fresh, the waitress told us nothing on the menu is fresh, it is all frozen food. Everything you order is tasteless and poor quality. Dinner menus appear like you are going to get a great meal but what comes out is another thing. I’ve just left schooners restaurant after what was the worse meal I have ever had in a restaurant. Lobster tail, which is actually a crayfish tail, was truly inedible. My husband was served raw chicken strips. The French restaurant was very poor, frozen formed fish in a bookable 5 star restaurant is just not acceptable. The coffee is from a machine and is made with UHT milk. The orange juice is from concentrate. Restaurants often run out of items, no Coleslaw three days in a row at lunch time when your only side dish option is fries or coleslaw. We were told we are free to go and get it from another restaurant if we wanted to. You just end up feeling ripped off paying so much for such poor food. Some evenings we just didn’t want to eat here and had to go off resort for a decent meal. Barmen are not trained, same drink comes out difference every time, completely hit and miss and they are unprofessional shouting laughing and dancing while people are waiting to be served. No one at poolside is enjoying the music apart from them, while we wait to be served they are messing about and dancing. The entertainment is embarrassingly poor, like something you’d experience in Benidorm. One afternoon in the middle of all the horrendous music, a man dressed as a chicken began to run around the pool, while a woman dressed as a chef chased the chicken with a pot in her hand shouting ‘ come here chicken’. All the restaurants and bars have zero atmosphere in the evening. All the guests were discussing how we go to bed so early as there is no where to go. We tried the English pub one evening for a after dinner drink and it smelt so strongly of vomit we had to walk straight out. You’re told there is entertainment every evening on the main stage, there isn’t. It was on twice and both times we left after a short stay. No maid service 3 out of the 12 days and when they do come they don’t refill the body wash or forget the towels. I am by no means a miserable person that doesn’t appreciate things that are great when they are. The island is lovely, the weather was great, we experienced a privately booked luxury catamaran trip which as fantastic and we were served a beautiful lunch on board. We ate off resort twice and the food was great. The Indian restaurant in sandals is actually really lovely authentic food, one of the servers, Cecil, was the best member of staff in the resort. This is a fair and honest review, don’t waste your money. We have spent similar amounts on other holidays and had a far better experience. The guests leaving 5 star reviews have clearly never experienced a real 5 star hotel, as unfortunately, this isn’t one. Read less

I honestly don't know how people can have a bad time at Sandals Royal. They must be genuinely looking for ways to be unhappy. It'd be like complaining that the ocean is too clear. We were just there on our honeymoon and couldn't have asked for anything different. Everything from the weather, the rooms, the service, the drinks the food - ALL of it was amazing. The food choices and quality were the best we've ever had at a resort. We had butler service with Sade and Archibald and wow did we luck out! They're both a dream team and took such amazing care of us from day one! Their level of service was incredible and they always had a smile on their face. Actually, the entire staff there were all happy all the time. You could walk by a chef or someone cleaning a pool and they would stop to say hi to you as you passed by. Yes, the restaurant service was a little bit slow, but you're on vacation so it doesn't really matter. To dive deeper into the butler service, though, we benefitted from them being able to reserve our chairs in the morning wherever we wanted to we didn't have to leave our rooms really early to do it ourselves. I know people complain about not being able to get chairs without a butler, and it's true, it IS hard for people to get them...BUT if chairs are reserved by butlers and the guests haven't gone there by 10am, they're up for grabs. I actually reminded people of that when there weren't any chairs left so they could grab them. They also drew us baths with champagne on ice on our balcony, which we wouldn't have done if left up to us! They made up our rooms multiple times throughout the day, making sure it was always tidy. If you wanted something special for lunch, they were happy to order it and bring it for lunch time. If you wanted a special liquor in your room, it was there waiting for you the next time you walked into it. Sade and Archibald were wonderful!! Would we get butler service if we went back? Maybe. The service from Sade and Archibald was incredible and we loved them, but we loved being pampered for our honeymoon and may or may not do it again if we went again. We didn't have a swim-up room, but the people we met that did have one said it wasn't worth the money. Unless you're spending a boadload of money to be one of the few that are literally on the beach, most of the swim-up rooms are in the shade for most of the day, so the water is cold. It all depends on what your trip is for, and the type of people you are, but we aren't the type to want to sit in our rooms all day. We had an amazing room, but we wanted to be on the beach all day and have the opportunity to meet people. So we definitely wouldn't have used a swim-up pool. One thing you HAVE to do is experience authentic Barbados! "Captain Larry, the Island Tour Guy" walks the beach to talk to guests, but not in an annoying way. He books day-long island tours where you go with a driver to see ALL of the island's landmarks. We spoke with a few guests that did it before booking and after getting rave reviews, we booked our day tour. My husband and I were treated like royalty and saw the entire island. If you do this, make sure you tell your driver you want to have a Bajan lunch or you'll probably be brought to a beach club somewhere. We went to a hole-in-the-wall spot with the BEST Bajan food! It was a full day (9:30am-4pm) touring, but so worth it! It was such an amazing experience and we can't wait to go back one day. It was very hard to leave to go home. It's definitely made us want to go to more Sandals resorts, too! Read less
