This hotel reminds of of something in days gone by. This is the type of hotel that you would picture Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra at, it is a throw back to a more romantic era of travel. It is an older hotel, I think that one of the buildings dates back to the 50's. The room decor and fittings are a bit older, but clean and functional. The grounds of the hotel are something that you can walk through with green areas and courtyards. If a hotel was built on the same area today it would be a concrete covered 1000 room vacation factory. As it is now it has more charm and atmosphere then any new hotel. The beach steps from any room in the hotel is magnificent. What sand and uncrowded. You can look 200 meters to the south and see an umbrella jungle. But the beach in front of Southern Palms may have 4 umbrellas total. For me there was a fun little surf break right in front of the hotel and the snorkeling was excellent. We swam with turtles every day. At the north end of the beach there is a reef and rock outcropping that had as much or more sea life then the Marine Sanctuary. I can not say enough about the excellent staff. The hotel rep, Kelly, was very helpful and always available. The grounds keeper and master of water sports, Rodney, was so accommodating and helpful and genuinely friendly. He even let my wife feed the fish and turtles in the hotel ponds. The hotel clientele seemed to be in an, older, age range, which suited us. It could not have been more peaceful. Read less

Location is probably one of the best in The Gap, a few steps to Dover Beach and surrounded by restaurants within 2-10 minutes walk. Would have given 5 stars, but the room was like a 1970's motel and definitely needs upgrading, in… Read more

We were in room 312 with 2 balconies, one over the beach and out to sea, the other over the pool and also out to sea. Would have given 5 stars, but the room was like a 1970's motel and definitely needs upgrading, in saying that, the bed was really comfy and the air con worked perfectly. All the staff were great and nothing was to much trouble, only booked bed & breakfast, but had a couple of meals in the hotel that were very good and reasonably priced. The hotel does not put sun beds on the beach for hire, which is public, so get your own sun bed and towel and deposit yourself on the quietest part of the beach. The hotel has a sort of time warp appeal, where people actually talk to one another, which gives it a really good feel. Having felt disappointed at the start, we soon fell into the spirit of Barbados and had a great time. Read less

Our ocean view room was within 10 steps of the beach. The room was cool and well kept. The bar is a great place to sit especially during happy hour from 6 until 7pm. We enjoyed the food in the restaurant. The room faced out on to a white sandy beach with coconut palms and beautiful turquoise and blue sea beyond. You can see wht people keep coming… Read more

We were told this was a nice place for Sunday Lunch Booked a table , went dressed up ready to have a typical Barbadian lunchtime jolly. The Band was meant to start at 1230 till 1500 hrs We noted that the Band members were chilling with beer at 1230. Hey this is Barbados we said and ordered a chilled bottle of wine I went and looked at the buffet.. 3 pies, Cottage pie, beef pie and chicken pie , some rice and some soup and salad.. Funny that no Barbadian food?? We asked if we could have A la Catre as we knew this was possible. Every 2 mins , a waitress would come and tell us to order as food would take a VERY long time. We said , we were happy to wait , listen to music. After 3/4 waitresses in space of 10/12 mins, an officious young dining manager appeared She was loud spoken , said we should NOT be sitting in the front row if we were not going to eat the buffet.. ( I reminded her we were booked and shown to this table) She then said that if we sat with our menus sooooo long , more people would want to order a la carte, and we offered to move to some obscure place if that helped her job! She was still not gracious and happy. This was our FIRST and ONLY BAD RUDE Barbadian experience and we quickly ordered fish of the day , took 1.15 hrs to come( not a problem) but we hated being rudely spoke to in front of a packed hall In that one hour we were ignored by the waitresses as if we were pariahs and even water glasses being filled often for everyone but us was terrible The Band was great and it was lovely seeing all the old folks getting us and dancing and looking happy Read less
