The majority of the staff were great (reception, odd-jobbers, domestics) but found that service round the bar area was average at best. The staff appeared loathe to serve you if you were sitting out from the covered area, just a few strides away under a parasol. Order taken maybe after 10-15-20 minutes, then maybe another 10-15 minutes before you got your drink. You could be sat there for ever when you had finished before the bill was fetched to be signed (if you got up and walked away however it was amazing how quickly staff approached and said "you've not signed your bill"! I ended up going elsewhere for an afternoon tipple as a consequence of this indifferent service which i found to be rather archaic. Despite this i would highly recommend this hotel: we had a wonderful time in Barbados. Special mention to Edrick, lovely man. Read less

The restaurant hosts the Barbados steel band every Sunday afternoon for noon to 3pm. The steel band is better than good, they are excellent. The band works so hard to please the guests. The drinks are flowing, people are dancing and everyone is just having a good time. A must when in the Barbados. Highly recommended.

I have yet to find anyone who does not enjoy this wonderful lunchtime event. Just sitting listening and looking at the wonderful Dover Beach is a moment to be experienced in Caribbean heaven. Of course cheerful Chad will be there to bring the other little extra bit......rum punch or cocktails!!! Read less

Literally on the beach . We went half board and the food was good, with a choice of two menus . The hotel receptionists were so helpful and knowledgeable. The swimming pools were very clean and just what we needed in the heat ! There were plenty of sunbeds for everyone both around the pool and on the beach . There are no umbrellas on the beach , just round the pool . Sunbeds are free . You can shade under the palm trees on the beach . We didn't really venture outside the hotel at night , mainly because we just loved being there . We met some lovely people so spent the night on the terrace which was literally on the beach . The handyman /beach man Rodney was lovely . He'd move sunbeds for you and let us feed the turtles and fish !! There are resident turtles in the pond /water feature within the grounds of the hotel . There are plenty of bars and restaurants just minutes away from the hotel but we weren't disturbed by any noise . It's easy to get round the island either by bus , reggae bus or taxi . All the busses where ever you want to go on the island is just 2 barbadian dollars each way per person . You have to try the reggae bus at least once , just for the experience!! Would I return? Most definitely!! Read less

We love The Southern Palms Hotel! We've stayed here on four occasions and it's awesome! Some of the guests have been staying at this hotel for 20 years + and we can see why. We think that we'd find it hard to find somewhere else in the Caribbean that's as great as this hotel. The hotel is unpretentious and is positioned on Dover Beach, which is the best beach in Barbados. The beach has powdery white sand and lots of space and shade under the palm trees for sun loungers. The sea is great for swimming (there's a bit of a wave, but it's generally ok), SUP, surfing and wind surfing. The hotel is within walking distance of some lovely restaurants and bars in St Lawrence Gap (this is a big plus, as there's nothing worse than staying somewhere that's remote and having to rely on taxis.) We love a restaurant with a view and would highly recommend the following: - Castaways (go there for lunch and do some turtle spotting!) - Primo (beautiful food and gorgeous view over the bay at sunset) - Apsara Samudra (lovely Thai restaurant overlooking the ocean.) The hotel staff are polite and helpful, and you can be sure of a warm welcome and a huge smile from Edrick! A special mention to Sandy, who works tirelessly and is very helpful with arranging water sports. If you've booked your holiday at the Southern Palms then you're in for a treat! We can't wait to go back. Read less
