The hotel

This lovely hotel is spread out along 1,000 ft of oceanfront at St Lawrence Gap, so has the best of both worlds — there are spacious grounds in which to relax and unwind during the day and then lively restaurants, shops and bars just a 5-minute walk away for evening entertainment! You can look out over the Caribbean Sea as you dine in the Garden Terrace restaurant and, on Sundays, people come from all over the island to enjoy the wonderfully lazy Sunday buffet lunch — accompanied by live music.

The concert is under the pavilion/restaurant/bar beachside and is really a treat. The players are better than average and have a good repertoire to hold your interest. We had lunch at the beachside restaurant both visits with drinks and they were very good as well. The hotel also has their weekly pie buffet in another section also near the music. This was the only place we heard Steel Drums while visiting Barbados off-season, but we enjoyed it both times! Well worth the visit. Read less

We returned to Southern Palms after 20yrs. This time with our 6yr old. It was like walking back in time, but not in a negative way. Barbados, and this part St Lawrence Gap is changing. Modern local housing, new hotels, holiday apartment blocks all being built up. It was nice to walk into this charming pink resort. Whilst it has obviously been updated with the times it hasn’t become a resort prison like so many of its neighbours. It offers enough to give you a lovely lazy day on site - two pools, poolside cocktails, beachfront (no hawkers!) - but the gates are open for you to wander freely and safely along the gap to local restaurants and bars, unlike so many of the all-inclusives that just want to keep your money within their walls. This is a lovely location to sample Barbados without hassle. We stayed end July for a week and it wasn’t too busy. There are shady spots under the palms around the pools or on the beach for you to shelter from the sun. Our room had 2 double beds and a fridge and sink. Decor isn’t high end (tropical print curtains and vivid green walls) but the linen was crisp and clean, the air con worked and the shower had warm water. Result! On evenings we’d walk down the Gap. Harlequin restaurant is a gem. Delicious food. We took a scuba/snorkel trip with Ram at Scotch & Soda down at Crystal Waters beach. He introduced me to scuba 20yrs ago so it was lovely to see the old seadog again. Southern Palms is a popular choice of nesting sand for the hawksbill turtle. My daughter was super excited to see one bobbing in the waves whilst we were out learning to surf. The following evening we watched as a female came ashore to lay her eggs. Fast forward another couple of nights and a separate nest had just hatched and we helped rescue the turtlets from running in the wrong direction! What an experience. Possibly a once in a lifetime. Something my daughter will remember for many years to come. All in all, we really enjoyed our stay at Southern Palms. It may not be as chic or glam as others, but it offers a down to earth charm. The location is perfect. From the pool to the beach is literally 10 steps. And to be able to walk out and sample Bajan life is a treat. Read less

What can I say... a beautiful hotel that exceeded expectations. Southern palms is located in a great location with its own beach, it is also close to so many bars and restaurants. I'd reccommend Primo Bar and also Harlequins restaurant which are both 5 minutes walk away. The food at the hotel itself is also excellent. Our room was lovely and spacious, we had a twin room which consisted of two large double beds, ensuite and small kitchenette, the room came with complimentary rum. The ground floor rooms are great as they have balcony areas which lead straight out to the Pool and beach. The staff are very friendly and the beach is lovely which plenty of space and sunbeds, watch out for traders on the beach and people trying to encourage you to buy drugs, especially if you are travelling with children/teenagers.The hotel is cleaned very regularly, can't fault it. Barbados is a great location for those who would like to have a chilled relaxing holiday. Read less

The beach is out of this world, food was lovely, a bit pricey but no more than anywhere else, great entertainment, would definitely return! Special mentions to the staff Rodney, Chad, Wendy, Marcy, Betty, and so many more to list. St Lawerence gap is perfect for those who want night life, but but still quite enough so you can’t hear it from the Hotel. Thankyou again Read less

Myself and my partner Paul have just returned from 10 days at the Southern Palms Hotel. What a fantastic time we had. Our room, 219, overlooked the pool and the beach which was just amazing. We had a terrace which I don’t think we ever sat on and a very spacious room with great air con and bathroom. Everything was spotlessly clean. The hotel itself was very, very quiet so there wasn’t a rush to get yourself a subbed each day. I think there’s only around 16 beds round the pool but plenty on the beach too. We were on a B&B stay and I think the only ‘fault’ I could give is that the breakfast could be better. There were the usual offerings of bacon, eggs, sausages, beans etc plus fruit, yoghurts, cereals and croissants etc but I think they could really make more of that mealtime. We hardly saw anyone at breakfast and there were very few tables made up which suggested that people opted to eat out. We ate on most days at the hotel for lunch and had one evening meal there too. The food was fantastic ! All freshly cooked and very tasty. The staff were brilliant ..... with a very special thank you to Hazel Anne and Chad ... who made sure our stay was as perfect as could be. Nothing was too much trouble for either of them and they went out of their way to say hello and get you anything you needed. Thanks guys. Paul has been to Barbados 19 times and always stayed at the Rostrevor just up the beach but has said that the SP can’t be beaten and we will be going back. I loved how chilled it was. There wasn’t entertainment on every night but we went out of our way to make sure we were there when the Steel Orchestra played. Absolutely fantastic ! Such talented guys with an incredible sound. To give an overview of our stay ..... HOTEL .... clean, quiet, perfect location but I would say if someone got hold of it and thoroughly modernised it then it would be out of this world given its location etc. FOOD ..... brilliant, fresh, varied lunch and evening menu. LOCATION .... outstanding ! The beach is incredible. Very close to all the bars, restaurants and sights of St Lawrence Gap. ROOM 219 ... spacious, clean, towels changed every day and bed made, small shower with no bath and the best in room hairdryer I’ve ever come across ! ST LAWRENCE GAP ... a great area with fabulous bars and restaurants. We would recommend Sharkeys, Mimosa (saw turtles on the beach trying to come in to lay eggs), Hal’s Car Park Bar for some funny karaoke, Cocktail Kitchen plus many more. Resort is very chilled out and wasn’t mega busy but still plenty to see. Thank you for a great holiday and see you next year xxx Read less
