Check in was good and we received our “bracelets” which gave us the all inclusive access and also allowed access to the rooms. Rooms were clean and comfortable and we had a great sea view. The beach was lovely and the sea nice and warm and great to cool off. The buffet restaurant was basic but had good variety each night and the food was good. The entertainment was also worth not as perhaps the best we had seen of a few island hotels. Best quality of the hotel must be the staff. They are always smiling and helpful and provided everything we needed. Drinks on the beach were especially nice. We will definitely come back for a lovely relaxing break in the future. Read less

The hotel was clean and beautiful. The food in the main restaurant was always excellent at any meal, with plenty of variety and a different menu every night for 7 days (repeated on second week). The one main outside bar could sometimes get quite busy, but usually quick and good service, with some lovely staff. You could eat inside or out on the terrace, although outside could have a lot of birdlife around. Reception will give you free bottles of water any time. There's no need to tip at all in the hotel. We chose to tip once or twice where a particular member of staff had given us excellent service either once or over the course of the holiday, but there's no expectation of tips in general. If you sit out on the tables in the sand, don't wriggle your bare feet in the sand as you may encounter the cat poo! In the day there's also Colin's Bar by the beach which does excellent cocktails and food. You can also borrow paddle boards and kayaks from next to Colin's Bar. There are plenty of beds on the beach, very comfy with/without shade as you like, and there's always iced water available to help yourself. The bar guys will bring you drinks at your sun bed if you want. You can also get snacks (crisps and peanuts) from the bar if you ask. Sometimes they bring round vodka jello shots! The hotel beach was such a lovely experience that we never really went to the pool, but the pool area always looked clean and nice with plenty of sunbeds. We tried snorkelling but there's not lots to see and it can be a bit choppy. Having said that, we did see a turtle, once at the hotel beach and once at another beach further along when we were snorkelling! There's entertainment every night. Mostly it's background singers, but one girl-singing trio were excellent and had everyone up dancing, and there's also a night with stilt walkers etc which is quite lively. One night the turtles actually hatched right outside the hotel and we all had to go on to the sand and hotel ground to save the babies and put them into buckets for the rescue people to come and collect them for release somewhere quieter. Amazing! Umi is one of the bookable but free restaurants, it's not just sushi, it's japanese and the food & service were excellent, well worth a couple of visits. Sizzle, also bookable and "free", was a disappointment. The good steaks/meals come with a surcharge, the drinks were rubbish, the dessert was still frozen (inedible) and the service was poor. I would not even bother going here. Our room was great, air con was excellent and silent. We had a lovely (not so) little balcony which looked into hotel grounds but was quite private due to tropical plants etc. We saw a wild monkey a couple of times. The only other little things that stopped this from being a 5/5 were... - our shower leaked into the bathroom/loo and a little bit into the bedroom if not careful; - the only way to shut the bedroom doors was to slam them, and they were not noise-proof, so we were often woken up in the night/early morning by other people shutting their doors or just talking in the corridor; - the beach towels often ran out after lunch or were not ready first thing in the morning; - the beach area is not your perfect golden sand beach picture, it's quite rocky underfoot in the water and is surrounded by rocks as well which is less visually appealing, although to be honest, we learned to love it! You can walk the beach in either direction and get to some lovely beaches, some where you can rent a pair of sunbeds. You can walk all the way into Bridgetown, partly on the beach and partly on the road, or just on the road - takes about half an hour if you walk by road, longer if you go the beach way. We had a good few hours between checkout and departure, and we wanted to spend the day by the beach. The hotel offers an excellent and free hospitality room arrangement, so you can have a shower and get changed in privacy even though you no longer have your room. It made our last day great and part of the holiday, rather than being a waste of time hiding indoors for hours waiting to be picked up. All in, Sugar Bay was fab and we had a brilliant time here! Initial impression when we arrived at night was ‘this looks nice’ swiftly followed by a dirty reception area and surly, non smiling reception staff. How long does it take to check in? 30 mins for them to sort the paperwork, take money, give us wristband keys 😳. Room shoddy, small, uninviting.....nice view of the sea however. IKEA curtain rails - labels still on the rods, really cheap and nasty furniture with the laminate peeling off. Refrigerator had two small bottles of water....surely all inclusive they could put a few sodas and maybe beers in. Freezer compartment needs to be defrosted. Shower and toilet in one room but to wash your hands you have to come back in to the bedroom and to the wardrobe area! Lovely white sandy beach, plentiful drinks to keep you hydrated. Sadly never enough towels for the pool or beach hence they run out quickly. UMI restaurant very good but you can only eat here twice in a week. The Reef where most of the meals are taken buffet style is quite frankly very mediocre at best, and the breakfast is nothing to get excited about either. Sadly, overall impression is of a hotel penny pinching and of overworked housekeeping staff, surly and indifferent reception staff and shabby and dirty communal areas. All yours for just over US$1500 for the weekend! Beware the extra charges for the phantom “ canvas bag” and if you lose the wristband, oh and don’t even bother trying for a late checkout, we heard many people request one as we passed reception and the robotic, surly response was always “No” Never again! Just arrived from a fantastic holiday in beautiful Barbados staying at Sugar Bay after a week cruising....What can I say....The location of this resort is right on the beach, which is fabulous. The staff are amazing, always smiling and ready to help. Breakfast was taken in The Reef with ocean view, this is a buffet restaurant which served breakfast lunch and dinner. Our omelettes were delicious made by a lovely lady called Petol and always with a huge smile. Another lady called Kay at breakfast was very informative about the area and gave us ideas what to see. Also Jo Disha always remembered to get my natural yogurt ready. We were pampered by all the staff and nothing was too much for any of them. The two restaurants in the resort - Sizzle and Umi served delicious food but you have to make a reservation. Lunchtime was spent at Colin's Beach Bar and Grill where Bejan food was served with their hot pepper sauce....amazing together with their rum mixes. There are two outdoor pools and one with a pool bar, where we enjoyed Bajan Rum Punch. Sashin who was manning the bar made the most amazing cocktails. The resort had lush gardens with good entertainment. The beach had plenty of lounges, hammocks, umbrellas (thank you umbrella man) and canopies to protect you from the sun. We found the pool area was understaffed, as many of the beds were always taken by towels rather than people! Teatime was from 4-5 and served by some lovely ladies and some days the coffee machine was not working. Our bedroom was bright and lovely with lots of room. Toiletries were provided by the resort which were by The White Company. The resort offered the guests a complimentary 10 minutes back massage which was absolutely amazing. We enjoyed a couples massage done by Tamesha and Janelle, they both did a fantastic job. Thank you ladies and to Morgan the Manager for that lovely idea. Thank you to all staff for making our stay a very rememberable one. I felt it a very safe island to walk about and to explore. All the people we met were very friendly and happy to help. Definitely will be back. Please also note a government tax is imposed per night. Read less
