I will start with things I wish I knew before coming here (still here) the beach is full of seaweed, the sand is covered in detritus, the pool isn't cleaned well. It's such a shame as the hotel is excellent. The food incredible an the staff very friendly. A few hours a week cleaning the beach and the pool would make the world of difference. Each beach bed is surrounded by rubbish from the previous day, like cups, cigarettes and covered in sand. Why can't they just clean these beds each morning. Doesn't seem too hard. Then the sand is also dirty, there's waves of seaweed that they could rack up. It attracts thousands of sand flies and ruin the idealic beach that I saw on the website pictures. If they cleaned the seaweed up there would be less floating around in the sea to bump into. The sand needs racking and turning. A quick rack, clean and turn would make the sand softer and get rid of all the dirty little pieces that catch your feet. The last thing to add, the Hotel needs to enforce a policy of no reserving beach or pool beds. People are coming out the night before to throw their towels on the beds then never using them. Despite the hotel being no way near capacity all the beds are taken. There is a rule of 30 minutes but no one enforces it. All these things are so simple but with it this places beauty is tarnished. Arriving at the Sugar Bay Hotel after almost 18 months of oppressive restrictions in the UK felt liberating. Given we were so desperate to escape, we thought we had no expectations; but soon realised that actually we are quite fussy. We were not disappointed. Our gratitude and commendation go to the exceptionally friendly staff – a skeleton staff who have clearly (upon talking to them about their lives) been severely impacted by the devastating downturn in tourism on the island, due to the pandemic. Massive shout outs have to go to Pedro, Erleen, Helen, Derek, Barry, Michael, Arden, Andrea, Lorraine, Samantha (all of them), Shaquan, Tadia, Kelly-Anne and Damien on bar and restaurant and Romian on the beach. Thank you to Ian for the aloe vera! Thank you to Samantha for keeping our room extraordinarily clean – and for the heaps of fresh white towels, umpteen bathmats, water and extra shampoo and conditioner! Romian patiently tried to teach our son (12) cricket – in the searing heat, and he was always quick with a paddleboard and a smile. Thank you to Andrea in the spa who gave our son a great haircut! Never before on holiday have we got to know the staff so well – they were friendly, always smiling and nothing was too much. In the face of all they have endured, this is amazing. The shared stories of the pandemic experience brought home to us what a global crisis this has been and yet, the joy, human spirit and laughter abounded. Less impressive were the front desk staff whom we always felt we were bothering. Upon asking for a program of activities (seeking out yoga) we were told there was none. Attending one yoga session was tricky and a bit of a shambles – we gave up trying to be healthy and succumbed to the long hot lazy days on the beach. The beach was STUNNING! Those warm clear blue waters a balm for all woes and we felt were very healing. A shame it was not cleared of glasses/the towels of the day before etc more regularly. But we go back to the skeleton staff issue. Food was FANTASTIC! One can tend to get sick of the same food over two weeks, but the variety and quality kept that at bay – we all came home carrying a few extra pounds around our middles! Initially only the main restaurant was open (masks and glove wearing a bit cumbersome and felt unnecessary), but we did get to enjoy Umi, Sizzle Steakhouse and Colins Bar as they opened. We were not looking for mass entertainment – but oh my word! Move over Rihanna – the girl band Vertigo (we think) who performed on Saturday nights were AMAZING. Wow wow wow. And enjoying live entertainment of such quality felt like a gift. The bar staff were fab – pity it had to close at 9pm due to a curfew which meant the staff had to leave to get home by 11pm. A pity for the adults, but all parents of teenagers were a bit relieved 😊 We met some incredible people – all ages. From the UK and the US. Made some friends we will definitely look up again. We felt we lucked out with our fabulous room – ground floor – wake up and walk out onto the beach – can’t ask for much more! All in all – was it perfect? No. But was it a tonic after the bruising the world has taken over the course of the pandemic? Yes – most certainly. Good people, good service, good food, liberty, kindness, shared experience, gratitude, positivity – all with a hefty dose of sun and the most magnificent sea. Would we go back – yes absolutely. If this is what it was like under tough conditions, we can only imagine how phenomenal it would be normally! Read less
