The House by Elegant Hotels

Barbados, Caribbean

The hotel

Set on a pristine stretch of white sand on Barbados’ West Coast, The House is the beachside version of a hip downtown hotel. On a design front its combination of smooth lines of teak, crisp white love seats and ambient torchlights set a mood that is suitably exotic. Yet it’s a beautifully intimate place with plenty of privacy for romantic dining. For food lovers, The House itself may be one of the best hunting grounds on the island, because the most acclaimed addition to the Barbados restaurant scene is the adjacent Daphne’s. Located bang on the beach, this satellite of the famous London restaurant serves a metropolitan version of Italian dishes, with an emphasis on seafood and is regarded by many as better than the original. Let your Hotel Ambassador organise your complimentary jet-lag massage, a round of golf at nearby Apes Hill Golf Course, spa treatments in a beachside cabana, or try your hand at the complimentary water sports. The service extends down to the beach and The Deck, with complimentary afternoon tea and evening canapés. Why not take advantage of the new Romance Concierge programme, where a dedicated Romance Ambassador is on hand to customise a surprise romantic event you vision if you are celebrating a birthday, proposal, honeymoon, or, just because.

But what really made it was the service - which was just outstanding. A small example follows. Unfortunately, I had to get up at 4am for a conference call one day. Without being asked, the night Barman kept bringing coffees over on the house. The beach, the views, the food, the service and most of all the people were outstanding. We recommend this unreservedly - this is a beautiful place, with universally delightful staff in a beautiful part of this exquisite island. We are grateful for such a wonderful stay and will definitely return. Read less

From the moment we arrived and welcomed by the perfect host in SherryAnne and the ‘Best Rum Punch EVER!’, this set the scene from what we knew would be a fantastic holiday at The House. With a Ocean View Junior Suite with views to die-for, Esther and her housekeeping team ensured the rooms were cleaned and well catered for including two daily services with spa quality toiletries. Breakfast is as one would expect with the addition of free-flowing Piper Champagne, which we indulged in on more than one occasion. The beach & pool area are well maintained and clean with the offer of complimentary flavoured and bottled water, sun cream, sun glasses cleaning, fruit and an ice lolly to cool us down in the afternoon sun. Every week Sandra hosts her manager’s cocktail reception which we found to be upbeat & relaxed and an opportunity to meet her team and other guests. Led by Sandra’s pursuit to deliver a consistent first class customer service experience throughout our stay, The House Ambassadors is what sets The House apart from other destinations on the island. As frequent visitors to the island, The Ambassadors have nailed the fine art of professionalism and friendliness. Although all Ambassadors are great, we would like to mention Wade, Richard, Ricardo, Shane and Matthew. A special shout-out goes to Nicholas who served us our evening Rum Punch. Best of all though was Esther who has been at The House for over 20 years. Her infectious personality and sense of humour, as well as her high standards was a joy to meet such a lovely lady. From our experience, taking over from The Cliff, the now number one restaurant on the island is Tides, a beautiful location and first class restaurant experience. Fusion rooftops and the Cliff Beach Club also offer an amazing setting with food to match. The Cliff Restaurant itself was mediocre; know whilst we can belt out ‘Come on Eileen and Ghostbusters’ with the best of them, it certainly wouldn’t be the music of choice for a fine dining restaurant which one can expect to pay a minimum of £300 per couple; not the ambience one would expect at the former undisputed number one restaurant in the Caribbean. For a local vibe not to be missed is the Sunday night street Karaoke at TML One Love in Holetown offering music, dance and street food. Scarlets opposite The House still retains the number one spot for casual dining, cocktails and a lively atmosphere. As we enjoy travelling to different destinations around the world, when we return to Barbados there is only one choice for us The House...Just Book It! Read less

My husband and I have just returned from a wonderful week at The House. We stayed at the original hotel (Buccaneer Bay) 30 years ago for our honeymoon so decided to revisit for old times sake. We honestly couldn't fault a thing. The hotel has obviously had a make over since we last came so it was interesting to see the changes. We stayed in a lovely ground floor ocean view suite. It was a perfectly adequate room, spacious and clean, nice bed, bathroom etc. Lovely terrace that opened out onto the pool area. The sunbeds are round the pool, on a raised deck looking out to the ocean or on the beach. All sunbeds were really comfy and a specially fitted towel is put on for you that fits over the whole bed. There's also suncream and aftersun provided and a daily flavoured water. We loved the wide choice at breakfast, all delicious food and eggs any way, made to order. Fresh juices, yoghurts, breads and pastries, bacon, sausages, hashbrowns, tomatoes, beans....daily specialities, I particularly loved the plantain chunks. The thing that makes this hotel so great is the staff and the service they provide. The little things like cleaning your glasses, bringing water and little treats to your sunbed. Fabulous cocktails at the bar made by Wade and Teddy, Richard, Ricardo.... I wish I could remember everyone's names but we honestly didn't come across anyone who wasn't super friendly and helpful. We feel like we've been really well looked after all week and we didn't want to leave. Everyone is absolutely lovely and nothing is too much trouble. We met some lovely people and spent time sat round the bar chatting, drinking rum punch. It was perfect for us that it was low season, so it wasn't too busy and felt like we were part of a very intimate group. We were given a late check out at no extra cost which was really great. It certainly won't be 30 years until we come back, already thinking about next year! Read less
