The House by Elegant Hotels

Barbados, Caribbean

The hotel

Set on a pristine stretch of white sand on Barbados’ West Coast, The House an all-inclusive boutique hotel, is the beachside version of a hip downtown hotel. On a design front its combination of smooth lines of teak, crisp white love seats and ambient torchlights set a mood that is suitably exotic. Yet it’s a beautifully intimate place with plenty of privacy for romantic dining. Let your Hotel Ambassador organise your complimentary jet-lag massage, a round of golf at nearby Royal West Moreland Course, spa treatments in a beachside cabana, or try your hand at the complimentary motorised and non-motorised water sports. The service extends down to the beach and The Deck, with complimentary afternoon tea and evening canapés. Why not take advantage of the new Romance Concierge programme, where a dedicated Romance Ambassador is on hand to customise a surprise romantic event you vision if you are celebrating a birthday, proposal, honeymoon, or, just because.

We were originally booked to holiday in the Maldives but as this was on the red list, we asked our travel company for a suitable and comparable alternative. They recommended The House. Looking at the website (but regrettably not the reviews) we were excited. However, soon after arriving we were left disappointed and felt short changed. As other reviewers have pointed out, the staff are amazing, really attentive and they made our stay bearable. We stayed in one of the ground floor junior garden suites which was very gloomy as vegetation blocked out any sunlight. We also noticed that most other garden suites featured drapes at the front of the patio area, but the wooden rail to ours was missing, so no drapes. The room was clean but desperately needs updating. The fridge was stocked with soft drinks and a number of bottled beers but no bottle opener was provided! To get a sun bed you had to rise at 6am to secure one. We heard that many guests were fed up as there was clearly not enough sun beds for the number of guests accommodated. There is only one pool which needs updating as it is missing numerous tiles. I would also suggest that the ground around the pool and the pathways leading up to the front facing garden suites need to be jet washed. There is only one dining area and we found the food, on the whole, was agreeable but we didn’t really care much when buffets were put on, seemed a lazy way to serve up dinner. While champagne is served for free at breakfast, you have to pay for it at any other time, which we found annoying as we were there on an all exclusive basis. The red wine was palatable but the white wine and rose were of poor quality. The lunch menu stayed the same daily but nevertheless was of a good standard. Overall, this is not a 5* hotel, more akin to 3/4*. It is in desperate need of a refurbishment in order to provide a much more agreeable experience for guests. As it stands, we wouldn’t consider returning unless some changes are made. Read less

Food at best 3 star & mainly 2 star - the lunch menu is very restricted & the dinner buffets/bbqs poor. Service 3 star - some members of staff did go the extra mile (mentioned regularly in other reviews), but there is a real absence of any overall management. The ambassador concept is not as advertised - it is not personalised & in reality it just means the waiters are required to do everything. One positive was the cleanliness of the suite. Overall I would not recommend this hotel and will not return. Read less

If you’re looking for a cookie cutter Spain or canaries island resort then this is not the hotel for you. If you’re looking to feel like you’re a guest in someone’s luxurious home and experience Bajan hospitality in a truly breath taking setting then this is where you need to book! Location - 5*. Truly stunning location right on the beach with an incredible torch fire light drive way at night. Food and drink - 4.5*. We were bed and breakfast so didn’t have lunch/dinner at the hotel. Our rate also included afternoon tea and canapés. The cocktails were wonderful and snacks (ice cream and freshly cut fruit) and bottled water were provided throughout the day on the beach. Only downside is that there was little variety at breakfast and during our 10 night stay, we only received 1 night of canapés. Cleanliness - 5*. Room was cleaned every morning and turn down service always offered. Beach was also very clean with no rubbish. Poolside/Beach - 4.5*. Very comfortable sun loungers with soft towels provided. You’ll always get a sun lounger on the beach but the best located ones are always saved before 7am! Spa - 5*. Complimentary jet lag massage was incredible! Lovely touch. Make sure to book when you arrive as the spa was full 4 days ahead when I went to book in. The room - 5*. Complimentary bottle of rose champagne on arrival. Super clean and spacious. Extremely comfortable beds. In order to get the full experience, I’d recommend the ocean view junior suite (which we were in). Well maintained room but bathroom and furnishings are in need of an update and hair dryer of poor quality. Staff - 5*. Giving a big shout out to Teddy and Shane for their super incredible service! Everything was so personal and it really made the trip that bit more special! The hotel is in need of an update and the only thing that is keeping it 5* is the staff and the ambience they create. We almost certainly will be back but do hope Marriott bring back their bed and breakfast rate as we don’t think all inclusive would be good value for money if you’re wanting to get out and explore. We have just returned after 10 days at the House, our first post Covid overseas holiday. We chose the House because we have visited here on 4 previous occasions and it was always our favourite place on Barbados to chill and relax. Sadly things have really changed, we had seen all the recent negative reviews but chose to overlook them based on our previous positive stays. The staff are still the best, friendly, attentive as always and we met several that we had encountered over the years. The hotel has a great beach location but its really looking tired now and in need of some basic maintenance, other reviewers have pointed out the shortfalls regards to the rooms and the pool area and they are correct. The conversion to an All Inclusive resort in my opinion is a mistake, this was always a small boutique style hotel with a great atmosphere, its not big enough to be successfully marketed as all inclusive. You will need to get up by 6.30am if you want to secure a sun bed around the pool, as I found out, 7.30 am is simply too late. We had booked this holiday on a Bed and Breakfast rate and when we arrived we were not happy to be asked to upgrade to all inclusive rate at a cost of $240 a day. We like to dine out at the many excellent restaurants on the West Coast so we turned this down. I now understand that All Inclusive is the only option so i think that will limit its appeal. We still had a great holiday once we had adapted but we will not return and from talking to several other guests they were all of the same opinion. This is a great shame, we have fabulous memories of the House and im heartbroken that we wont be returning unless Marriott restore the property to its former glory. Read less

We have just returned from a 10 night stay at The House. Overall we had a great holiday in Barbados and our stay at the property was very mixed. What was good: The staff, they really are the saving grace for this hotel. Attentive, without being overly so, excellent service and friendly. Champagne for breakfast and they weren’t stingy, generously poured. Bar drinks and cocktails are well mixed. Bathrobes in the bedroom, roomy and comfy. The bad: The House is extremely tired, to say we were disappointed with the standard of the rooms would be putting it mildly. We had a garden suite with a plunge pool. Don’t really know where to start with the room, it was clean as in not dirty but it was so dated, the lack of soft furnishings and pictures etc made it feel really unwelcoming. Things like no rugs at the side of the bed, so your feet are straight onto terracotta tiling, no toilet roll holder in the bathroom, loo roll perched on top of the cistern. Evidence of poor repair work in the bathroom, the tiling had so many holes that had been filled from previous fixtures. We could go on and on, just do not expect 5 star luxury. Sun beds - be prepared to get up very early to stand a chance of getting a decent positioned sun bed. All the sun beds need replacing, old and uncomfortable. Pool - missing tiles and dirty. The whole pool area needs a good jet wash. Food - we were bed and breakfast and only ate at the hotel the first night whilst waiting for our COVID all clear. Evening food was of a good standard on that night. Beware the price of a bottle of wine was around £60 for a bottle of Sauvignon Blanc. It was certainly more expensive than other, much nicer bottles we had whilst eating out during our stay at some of the fantastic restaurants on the west coast. Would we stay here again, no. Did it spoil our holiday, no. Do wish though that we’d taken heed of the previously poor reviews and swapped hotels which we very nearly did but convinced ourselves that it couldn’t be that bad. We were saying that a good comparison of what to expect would be 3 star Spanish resort level. The price paid or being charged is not reflective of what you can get elsewhere on the island for the same money. When we booked the only other hotel on the west coast that was more expensive was Sandy Lane. We were due to stay at the Fairmont originally but due to COVID the dates were moved and they couldn’t accommodate the change as they were fully booked. We expected a similar standard, that’s not what we got at all. Marriott have recently taken over the hotel and hope that the years of lack of investment from the previous owners is sorted out and a refurbishment is in the pipeline. We met some lovely guests at the hotel, some of who have been coming to The House for over 10 years, sadly without exception they were all saying this would be their last visit and they would be staying somewhere else on their next trip.
