The House by Elegant Hotels

Barbados, Caribbean

The hotel

Set on a pristine stretch of white sand on Barbados’ West Coast, The House is the beachside version of a hip downtown hotel. On a design front its combination of smooth lines of teak, crisp white love seats and ambient torchlights set a mood that is suitably exotic. Yet it’s a beautifully intimate place with plenty of privacy for romantic dining. For food lovers, The House itself may be one of the best hunting grounds on the island, because the most acclaimed addition to the Barbados restaurant scene is the adjacent Daphne’s. Located bang on the beach, this satellite of the famous London restaurant serves a metropolitan version of Italian dishes, with an emphasis on seafood and is regarded by many as better than the original. Let your Hotel Ambassador organise your complimentary jet-lag massage, a round of golf at nearby Apes Hill Golf Course, spa treatments in a beachside cabana, or try your hand at the complimentary water sports. The service extends down to the beach and The Deck, with complimentary afternoon tea and evening canapés. Why not take advantage of the new Romance Concierge programme, where a dedicated Romance Ambassador is on hand to customise a surprise romantic event you vision if you are celebrating a birthday, proposal, honeymoon, or, just because.

Our flight was delayed so we did not arrive until dusk. There are no signs , just a gate that opened to reveal a wooden bridge across a large pond, lit by flaming torches. As you exit the taxi you are personally greeted with the phrase, Welcome Home. Because it was dusk there was recessed lighting in the floor that lead your eye down the few steps through the lounge and straight into the sunset. There is no reception, an Ambassador brings you a glass of champagne while you take in the views before taking you to your room, which was huge, 2 bathrooms, 2 walk in wardrobes, 2 balconies, large lounge area - and views across the Caribbean. Breakfast, with champagne, is superb, excellent choice, again with sea view. The Ambassadors are very friendly and attentive but without being obtrusive. The hotel exceeds at the little touches, sun cream available by the beach, cleaning your sunglasses, bringing round bottles of cold water, icecream (with rum) and fresh fruit, not forgetting the cream teas with scones, jam and Cornish clotted cream. Whatever you need the Ambassadors can arrange. Whist the hotel does not have a restaurant you can dine on the torch lit terrace and have dinner served from Daphne's next door, and if you are lucky, so can dine and watch the turtles coming ashore to lay their eggs . It is very tempting just to lay back and be pampered 24/7 but hire a car and see the rest of Barbados, little coves and long deserted beaches on the Atlantic side, but it was always good to get back to the House. We have been at Sandy Lane in the past, but wanted to experience a new property. The House is quiet and intimate, and the Ambassador program is exceptional. Every staff member is trained to assist with dinner reservations, taxis, outings, and general questions about Barbados. There is no need for a concierge as the ambassadors can take care of all of your needs. The personal service is unmatched- while on the beautiful beach, staff members come by with bottles of water, fresh fruit, and ice cream, and periodically clean your glasses and brush sand from your lounge chair, all with a smile! Everyone is very friendly and they learn your name and your preferences quickly. We had the true Caribbean experience at The House, unlike Sandy Lane, which can feel a bit like staying at a museum with all of the marble and fountains( not to mention crowded). Afternoon tea is complementary and very enjoyable, as well as evening canapés. Daphnes Italian restaurant next door, provides all meals and is very good. We can't wait to return to The House! It ticks every box for us - great beachside location, fantastic staff, adults only, so blissfully quiet, and a lovely, friendly relaxed atmosphere. It’s a bit quirky and unconventional at times - and it could do with a bit of a refurb in some areas - but it would be a terrible shame if Marriott converted it into a ghastly, characterless all-inclusive place which are ten a penny in the Caribbean. What is so refreshing is that the team are such good fun and bring real Bajan personality to the hotel. The food from Daphnes is great too - and you’re also on the doorstep of half a dozen world class restaurants (another reason why all-inclusive would be crazy). Read less
