Yellow Bird Hotel

Barbados, Caribbean

The hotel

This chic hotel is reputed to have some of the friendliest staff on the island! It's also located across the road from St. Lawrence Bay where the waters are exceptionally shallow at low tide — enabling you to safely walk miles into the ocean (you might see some turtles along the way!). There’s a lovely restaurant on-site or you can head round the corner to the centre of St. Lawrence Gap for some lively nightlife. Refurbished studio rooms have large balconies offering stunning views, a kitchenette and complimentary WiFi.

I’d love to give a higher score but overall, all things considered, this was not more than a 3* experience. Plenty of details below if you’re in for the read! I’ll start with the best bits: the location at the start of the st Lawrence gap was perfect. The gap is full of good restaurants and nightlife. It is also a good location from which to start exploring the island. There is a local bus stop just outside on the main road or you can rent a car from the hotel reception if you’re up for a self drive (I definitely recommend this as you can choose where and how long you want to stop). Breakfast is served until 12:00 so there is no need to have a rushed morning or early start. Beach towels and snorkel gear are available for a deposit, which is returned when you return them as long as you keep your receipt. In addition to that I’d like to note that Monique was very helpful and had lots of information about Barbados. The kitchenette has all the necessities and there was a refillable glass bottle for water in the fridge. Now the less exciting bits. Our room, which was booked in September, was not available at check in (this was around 6:30pm). We waited 30 minutes in the lobby with little to no information about what was going on rather than just being told the room we booked was not available. After the 30 minutes we were provided a room for 1 night then would move the next day. However we were not given any further information about time of the transfer etc. At 9:30 reception called the room expecting us to leave our bags at reception and move but another room was not yet ready. This situation was poorly managed and inconvenient. Once we were actually checked in we received our welcome drink voucher. It might have been nice to have this while we were waiting! The room we booked was good but there was no curtain on the kitchen window so it was very very bright in the mornings. The policy was that towels would be changed every other day but ours were only changed one time, after the 2nd day, and we were there for a week. That said, the housekeeping staff were smiley and friendly when we saw them around the building. The floor never seemed to be properly cleaned. It was mopped but it was never vacuumed and our feet were left black/dusty when walking around barefoot. Finally, the fitted sheets were not as long as the bed so if you pulled the blanket down you could see the exposed mattress. Other than Monique, the front desk staff didn’t have much useful information and all seemed a bit uninterested. They were in no way rude however they also weren’t very friendly or able to answer many questions. Overall the stay was good and I probably would stay there again. However I do feel there is some room for improvement on the things noted above. Read less

Friendly stuff at the hotel is always ready to help you out. Taxi or bus is close by. Two beaches where you can see turtles in nature are in walking distance, as well as convenience store, restaurants and clubs.

Since our last visit two years ago the restaurant has been renovated and is a class act with wonderful staff who are so obligated to making you feel part of the Yellow Bird family. This is a must visit hotel you will not be disappointed.

The warmest welcome I've had in a while! My flight was two hours late so I sent a message to the hotel to advise of the delay. I was also given a lovely reusable bag for shopping as many Bajan stores have made the switch to eco-friendly practices. This is really thoughful and a great way to market the Yellow Bird as a responsible enterprise. Read less
