I had really high expectations of Spice Island. I accept I must be in the minority but my husband and I spent ten days there last March and although he enjoyed it more than I did we both felt for the money it should be considerable better. We arrived after a flight from the U.K. and were met as promised at the airport. The car had seen better days though and the driver was not very personable. I say this because on departure, after we had left a significant gratuity with the management for back office staff, we were escorted out to a luxury Mercedes and our driver was exemplary and professional. We stayed in an Almond Suite. I didn’t want to stay in a Sea grape suite as they are right on the public beach and it does get noisy, at one end is a bar where the booze cruise docks. No fault of the hotel though. The Almond Suites have a lovely pool and are very private. I didn’t like the fact that the wardrobes are in the bathroom. There is no walk in shower, you actually have to climb over a wide ledge as the shower is over the bath. I noticed the grouting needed replacing which I thought was bad. The overall square footage of the room is generous, especially the outside area but the bedroom itself is quite small with not much room to sit and relax unless you sit on the bed. My main dislike of Spice Island was Oliver’s restaurant. It needs a refurbishment. It’s dreary with old fashioned blanquette seats that reminded me of old Beefeater Inns. Breakfast was poor, at least the buffet was. They kept running out of natural yogurt, the fruit selection was limited as were the breads and pastries. My husband ordered cooked a la Carte which he enjoyed but it would take an age to arrive as did the luke warm coffee. Lunch is served in an adjacent restaurant and was better, as was the service, most days. The buffet lunch was served one day and again it was ok but nothing spectacular. Dinner is in Oliver’s. The choice is plentiful but to me missed the mark. One night we didn’t like anything in the menu and went to have dinner at Calabash. The food, service and ambiance was far superior to Spice Island but we didn’t like the hotel as much. Spice island is charming and the staff are lovely. The guests were predominantly, at the time we stayed, rather elderly and so the bar was dead in the evening. Perhaps at a different time of year it would have more atmosphere. We enjoyed our holiday and perhaps an average rating is a little harsh but we have just returned from 10 nights in The Maldives and paid less at a far superior five star resort on an all inclusive basis in a better pool suite, travelling business class than we did at Spice Island. The food is unequivocally the best I have had at any resort I have ever stayed at . The staff goes beyond what is expected to make you feel at home . A special shout out to Michael who made sure every day I was taken care of at the pool . To Sir Royston Hopkin and the Hopkin family THANK YOU !!! We are looking forward to coming back ! Read less

Last time I stayed at the Spice Island Beach Resort was in January 2004. Since then, the hotel has undergone an extensive renovation. Today, it meets top standards with excellent infrastructure, good service, and a very relaxing ambiance with a view over the beach. However, the only serious drawback is the fact that infrastructure maintenance does not meet the level the hotel wants to maintain: for two days in a row, the water supply was unsteady. This is especially annoying when you return from the beach and need to shower. After 30 seconds warm water, the supply turns to air and you need to wait 10 to 15 minutes or go to the pool to rinse. Staff repeatedly told me "they were cleaning the tanks." However, it seems that the water system was not drained correctly and continues to have air pockets - this should not happen in a hotel of this class! Read less

Spice Island was part of our two island Caribbean holiday and, after an idyllic week in Antigua, it had a tough act to follow. Needn't have worried as every expectation was met and exceeded. The setting on Grand Anse beach is superb and facilities are first class (brochure spot on) but particular points of difference which impressed us included: * Nothing too much trouble - from opening gym early to thoughtful birthday card/gift * Reception and restaurant staff on-point and almost always greet guests by name * Service everywhere is impeccable (nice contrast to Caribbean norm) * Close to Michelin star restaurant menu and tip-top food quality It would be churlish to nit-pick over relative lack of organised activities and limited pool facilities as this is a place to sit back, relax and enjoy being spoilt. In summary - loved it and would return in a heart beat. Read less

Booked for New Years Eve 2019/20 for a seven course taster menu. Explained I was allergic to walnuts. Paid 50% upfront of £150 of £300 set price plus 15% VAT and 10% service charge and drinks. We were trying it out to see whether yo books family trip back next Christmas as it looked lovely .Not given a table in the main restaurant . Put with large family groups with children running around .in separate area . Asked if we could move . Told no but couple on table next to us asked ( two you g women)snd were moved . Food was below average , luke warm and had obviously been cooked for some time . Drinks were taken away before we had finished them and I was served a plate of walnuts with cheese having said I was allegic to them . Decided to leave and they agreed that we would not have to pay the remaining £150 as it quite definitely was not worth the price , treatment or service . Be careful how you treat all guests would be my recommendation as we could have been big customers bringing a large party in the future. We have booked Mount Cinnamon next door instead for our large group . Read less
