The hotel

There’s something special about staying in a family run resort. It adds an air of authenticity, a warmer kind of welcome, and little extras which bigger hotels might just forget about. That’s what you get with True Blue Bay Boutique Resort. The owners know just what you need for a stay on this south coast bay, and they include family musts like a kids' playground and activities, local touches like rum and chocolate tasting, and free treats like Hobie cats, ocean kayaks and yoga classes. They even run a complimentary shuttle to Grand Anse Beach, and BBC Beach in Morne Rouge. Designing the hotel themselves, the Fielden family have added Caribbean touches throughout the resort, as well as those things you’d only expect from a big-name hotel; including four pools, a spa, a boutique, fresh bakery, escape room game, and a PADI-certified dive centre.

We just returned from a glorious stay at True Blue in Grenada. I had never been to the Caribbean before (it’s been on the list!) so I was excited about the new experience. And a luxurious experience it was! I think the best way to describe True Blue is…friendly. Family-friendly, environmentally friendly, the staff was friendly, and even the grounds were friendly. I felt welcome the entire time. The staff, naturally, played a significant role in creating this vibe. Within a day of being there, both Julie and I were greeted by name at breakfast. Moreover, when we left a sweatshirt on the back of a chair one day (definitely didn’t need it!). As soon as I returned to the Villa, the phone rang. “Ted? I think Julie left her shirt here.” So Julie turned around to go get it and had barely made it to the restaurant when someone met her outside with it. Throughout our stay, the waitstaff, bartenders, housekeeping, and front desk folk went out of their way to answer our questions, call a taxi, check to make sure we were comfortable, and ensure that we were enjoying our stay. The facilities as well are top-notch! We stayed in one of the villas, a mere 62-step journey to the pool and tiki bar. (And since I was in Grenada I simply HAD to sample a pina colada sprinkled with native nutmeg!) The villa boasted a functional kitchen, a plunge pool, a balcony overlooking the pool, and spacious bathrooms. My only critique is the couch and the internet. This was a working vacation, and I often write while propped up on the couch. I can’t say the pillow resting on the arms and back of the rustic lodge couch was overly comfortable. And while the internet was serviceable, it would lag and drop out at times. One of the staff mentioned that the resort was upgrading to fiber optics…but to be fair, I’m not sure if it’s a True Blue issue or just Grenada as a whole. The rest of the facility, however, whispers “relax.” I loved the mix of luxury and authentic rusticity. Modern resorts often feel too impersonal, but the old wood dock hosting the restaurant, brick walkways, handpainted signs, and colorful buildings all fit the Caribbean vibe. There was a gym, a yoga studio, a chocolate shop, a gift shop, a conference center, a library, a bakery…and I’m, sure there was more there that I didn’t get a chance to see. One night we enjoyed a free concert from an INCREDIBLE band while dipping our toes in one of the pools. (The band played over 2 1/2 hours without…literally…missing a beat. No breaks…just great music ranging from funk to Disney classics, to 80s, reggae, and soca. The views of the bay at breakfast are inspiring. Folks heading off on diving excursions walked around the corner from breakfast and boarded the dive boats. And while we didn’t get a chance to dive, a couple who did raved about the quality of the dive instructors. Instead of diving we visited the beaches and took a tour of the island where we visited St George fort, a waterfall, a spice shop, toured a rum distillery, and had lunch at a chocolate shop. I couldn’t recommend them enough; I’m sure we’ll return. At the pool one afternoon, a woman heading back to the northern hemisphere lamented to us, “I’ve been coming here for 3 years…and I never want to leave.” I can see why. Read less

Food - not so great. Restaurant - Breakfast, not all but most of the staff not friendly. Dinner- don't expect to eat right away. Staff was not friendly. We had to wait 4 hrs. for towels. When we asked why the long wait, they said they only have one washer and dryer.

Lovely hotel with great views and 4 pools. The rooms are spacious. The restaurant is right on the water. There are daily yoga classes and there is a spa and nice gift shop. They offer room service.

Firstly the customer care is magnificent, as you walk into the lobby the approachable, friendly, smiling staff are as helpful as you could ever want someone to be... Firstly the customer care is magnificent, as you walk into the lobby the approachable, friendly, smiling staff are as helpful as you could ever want someone to be... The fact that you are then shuttled off in a little golf cart to your room with your luggage (either with or after you, dependent on amount or bags) is an added extra (the walk is never that far, it just adds to the customer care). The room we had was luxurious feeling, spacious and pre cooled for our arrival (in a hot climate that is another wonderfully thoughtful touch). More than one member of staff was happy to share with us the Wednesday evening activities of street food and live music, for not just guests but locals alike (the best part was they were thoughtful enough to offer guests the chance to book tables so the locals who all knew the set up didn't get there first and leave us out of the action). A magnificent evening that made the stay even more worth while. Read less
