Hilton Rose Hall Resort & Spa

Montego Bay, Jamaica

The hotel

Lying on a beautiful, long stretch of private beach, this tropical resort is situated in 400 lush acres of an 18th-century sugar plantation. There’s a large main swimming pool, but everyone (kids' especially) loves the Sugar Mill Falls Waterpark, which is the largest in Jamaica. Why not grab a tube and float down the ‘lazy river’ or try one of the slides. Water sports are available from the brand new beach, overlooking the sparkling Caribbean Sea. There’s also a daily kids' club, leaving you with time to recharge in the full-service spa, or why not try out the Championship golf course, tennis and the popular aerobics classes. A variety of restaurant options with fine dining and sophisticated wine lists are on-site. The most romantic restaurant is the Three Palms, up on the hillside looking down over the hotel and the sea beyond.

The resort is slight above average. The resort needs to improve on the food quality, nightly entertainment, bathroom renovation and remove the reservation system at most of their restaurants for evening dining. Since being an all inclusive resort it has to make it more engaging where they need to hire staff to be involved with the guests at the pool and other activities during the day and during nightly entertainment. The best thing about the resort is that the employees were pretty service oriented. They took care of the guests nicely. Read less

We had fun but these are the things I wished I had known before I went....if you want a cabana reserve one before you go on the trip. We tried to get one for each day the moment we arrived and they were all booked and we only got one on our last day. We were disappointed. Also, reserved dinners before you go so you get the day and times you want. We arrived about noon and check in was very slow. Accept it and come to peace. I would recommend putting your swimwear and sunscreen in a bag on the top of your suitcase so you can drop your luggage in the luggage pile in the lobby with everyone else and enjoy the property while you wait for your room to be available. Meals were fine but they were described so well online that I was a bit disappointed. I did not like any of the free wine but I surprisingly liked the free champagne. If you get to the FRESH buffet early you may get the delicious chocolate muffins before they are gone - they were heavenly. The jerk chicken shack was great and a line forms fast if you like that kind of food. We had it for lunch each day. Delicious. Though it is a shack so the first time we went we were hesitant but it was delicious. My 10 year old even liked it! Most people put there towels and a book on the chairs they want either the night before or super early in the morning because when we went down pretty early most of the chairs were taken. Surprising though the two covered chairs on the dock near the sea were sometimes not taken so I suggest checking there. Be at peace with slowness and seemingly disorganization when checking out kayak and other extra water stuff. Maybe if was just the days we went but it was not as smooth as we hoped. We came to peace and still had fun. Find the list of activities and times if you are into playing games and doing the resort volleyball. Then you will know where to go and what time so you can participate if you are participating kind of people. The game room for older kids with the electronics was good. My 10 year old liked to play a bit in there. The game room across the way was almost not a game room. It was 2 pool tables and a broken basketball game. One night we went in and it was all used so we left but one night we went in and it was empty so we stayed 30 minutes and played pool. We struggled at the little store at the resort. We went about 4 times and each time the computer system was broken and we waited about 15 minutes in line each time before we left without anything. I suggest, any time you see NO LINE, go in and get your things you want. Each night there is a party. If you are into the later evening party than it is fun but if you have an early morning or you want to go to bed earlier than the party if VERY LOUD if you are over looking the party area. We changed rooms and it was a big hassle so get a room away from the party on the other side maybe over looking the golf course so you won't be kept up late. The rooms were dated but pretty clean and the beds clean and comfortable. As far as the price goes I thought that was the great part. For a cheap price we had fun for a few days and ate, drank and played a lot. If you go on the Dunn Falls trip do it on a day that the CRUISE SHIPS ARE NOT going. OMG the Dunn Falls were so crowded it was actually unacceptable. It took 30 minutes to get a locker and 30 minutes to get our deposit back at the end. It took another 30 minutes to get to the front of the line to even get into the falls. In the falls it was WALL TO WALL people, never seen so many people in a small area. It was not peaceful at all. The good thing was that if people were struggling to climb the falls they had a few places where people could get out early. We went all the way to the top and it was an experience but the cab driver said it is way better on the days that the cruise ships are not there. That goes the same for Mystic Falls to chairlift, zipline and do the alpine coaster (bobsled). We went there without cruise ship tourists and it was very pleasant. Both of those are off the resort and about 1-2 hours away. Read less

I don’t want to sound entitled, but I felt that this resort neither lived up to the expectations of an all-inclusive or the quality that Hilton usually demands. The bottom line is that I would not recommend this resort to others. Nothing was terrible, but everything felt pretty basic. I was mainly disappointed with the food quality, room (outlets and wifi), and communication with staff. Cabana - as a diamond member you get one-day complimentary standard cabana usage, but we didn’t learn about this benefit until arrival, and by then the only availability was next to the main pool which is a pretty busy area with lots of kids running around. The Cabana attendant maybe checked on us every 1-2 hours which seemed neglectful. We were excited about this added perk, but the reality of it was disappointing. Beach - there is a stretch of beach available, but it’s less than ideal with lots of seaweed. Not unpleasant, not anything special. Dining was a bit of a mixed bag. The indoor buffet was mostly underwhelming. I was looking forward to the meal because of what I read in other reviews, but we were very disappointed with the selection and quality. They have the basics (lots of bread, Romain lettuce, fries, and chicken nuggets, etc.) but I felt like many of the main dishes were basic almost like something that could have microwaved. It seemed like a cheap Buffet masquerading as a quality restaurant. Outdoor Beach Dinner Buffet - food quality was much much better. Lots of local dishes (oxtail, black finger fish, shrimp, jet chicken and pork, curry) As well as some live music and entertainment. This was by far the best meal of our stay. In-room dining/room service - this is a sore spot because at other all-inclusive resorts (such as Hyatt) I’ve grown accustomed to room service being included, which is not the case here. Expect to pay $10+ for even the cheapest option. No room service included combined with the fact that the restaurants don’t allow you to have taken away/have doggie bag seems like a gimmick to get the guest to spend more during their stay. The beverages in the mini-fridge are free, but that doesn’t compensate for no room service. Parking - easy and complimentary Recycling/Sustainability- the hotel has stopped using straws which is excellent; however, the drinks are served in single serving plastic, and the room has no recycle bin which was disappointing. WiFi - The WiFi has decent coverage, reaching even to the main pool. But they only allow four devices to connect to the WiFi per room. Since this was a working holiday for us, this limit was inconvenient. Outlets were very disappointing. I think it’s a ‘must’ nowadays to have outlets on both bedside tables, but our suite didn’t have outlets on either bedside table. Bathroom - The room had good water pressure and plenty hot but no bath. ‘Suite’ - we were upgraded to a suite, I emailed to let them know that it was our anniversary and that combined with the fact that we are Diamond members got us a ‘suite’ upgrade. Our suite was two small adjoining rooms that mirrored each other, one with a bed, one with a couch. It was nice to have a view, but It was surprising that they called this a suite. Communication with hotel staff was extremely disappointing. I tried to make dinner reservations three days before arrival, but the concierge desk told me to call back closer to our stay. I also tried to email the GM but was given the GM’s assistants email. After three days of no reply, I emailed the Front Desk Manager and got a response, but it really shouldn’t take this much work to speak to management. Maybe I set the bar too high, but I was disappointed across the board with this ‘all inclusive’ resort. The Hyatt all-inclusive we’ve stayed at in the past offers a much better experience, even though we were Hilton Diamond members. Read less
