Hilton Rose Hall Resort & Spa

Montego Bay, Jamaica

The hotel

Lying on a beautiful, long stretch of private beach, this tropical resort is situated in 400 lush acres of an 18th-century sugar plantation. There’s a large main swimming pool, but everyone (kids' especially) loves the Sugar Mill Falls Waterpark, which is the largest in Jamaica. Why not grab a tube and float down the ‘lazy river’ or try one of the slides. Water sports are available from the brand new beach, overlooking the sparkling Caribbean Sea. There’s also a daily kids' club, leaving you with time to recharge in the full-service spa, or why not try out the Championship golf course, tennis and the popular aerobics classes. A variety of restaurant options with fine dining and sophisticated wine lists are on-site. The most romantic restaurant is the Three Palms, up on the hillside looking down over the hotel and the sea beyond.

Recently stayed here for 2 weeks and we had an amazing time. The staff around the hotel and grounds are so friendly and happy all the time...amazing staff they really are. Food options were great and always had good choices but really would like to see more gluten free options as my wife has coeliac and did struggle to find gluten free bread most of the time, probably twice in 14 days she had some!!! Some issues which we did come across which hopefully will get put right in the future. 1) The main issue - Pool staff. There was a occasion where 2 women were smoking shisha in the lazy river and had all the equipment on the side of the pool and was standing in the water smoking it. We reported this to the pool staff and to their credit they did come and speak to them, but by the time he finished it was like they were best mates and were very rude to us! There are designated areas within the hotel where they can officially smoke this and the poolside is definitely not one of those areas. They had kids all swimming past looking at them as to say what are they doing? Anyway the pool staff never moved them on so we went and spoke to the hotel manager who told us that the pool staff should have known they cant smoke that there and to ask them to stop so she then had to get security in and to have them moved on. 2) Plumbing - There was 2 occasions where we experienced problems regarding plumbing. Once was with our toilet that everytime we flushed it, all the waste was coming up through to the bath and over the floor.....not pleasant at all. To their credit, we did get a room change one floor above. Also another occasion was one morning we woke up and had no water so we checked in with the reception and the whole hotel had no water for around an hour. So even the main toilets in the lobby were left unflushed and unpleasant again. Overall though, we did have a lovely 2 weeks in Jamaica and the Hilton rose....would we stay again? yes we would, just hope those negative points get worked upon and never happen again. Read less

Outstanding holiday at lively fun filled family hotel. Staff were exceptional and couldn’t do enough for you. Only downside was there weren’t enough tubes on lazy river and they were mostly taken by adults but we bought one in gift shop. I would highly recommend the snorkelling trip at the hotel. It was outstanding! Overall amazing trip!!

I really enjoy this resort. What makes it so great are the people. As you pass them they put their hand over their hearts as if to salute you - to welcome you - and to be warm and friendly. I really enjoy this resort. What makes it so great are the people. As you pass them they put their hand over their hearts as if to salute you - to welcome you - and to be warm and friendly. Last year when we came to Hilton Rose Hall, my son, who is Type I diabetic , lost his CGM sensor in the lazy river. The staff mobilized to find it (we found it in a drain at the bottom of the pool after they had turned off the current.) I was pleased to find the staff every bit as friendly and guest-oriented as last year when we returned. The food - The breakfast buffet food is mostly good - it gets a little old after a few days. Most of the variation in the breakfast buffet centers on the potatoes. Some days you will have hash browns, other days boiled potatoes and onions... the bacon is overly greasy but the omelette guys are flippin’ fast! The dinner buffet, which we visited twice, was very good both nights and featured different foods. The bartenders are really nice - especially my man Neville. I got to know him last year and I was happy to see him again this year - same with Shawn, another GREAT bartender. I also love the coffee shop and the nice selection of cakes (and I love Barbara!) Other restaurants I liked are Annie’s BBQ (my fave) and Luna Di Mare, the Italian restaurant. OK, being that 50% of my ancestry is Italian (through my father) I should say that you need to temper your expectations when it comes to Jamaican Italian food. That said, their chef does a lot of things right. Other good things at this resort is a great teen club, good security to prevent us from being harassed by beach salespersons, and what appears to be a smoking ban on the beach (nobody seems to do it there!) Awesome jerk chicken and pork at the jerk hut and the jerk chicken pizza at moonstone is really good! Now you may ask why I am giving 4 stars instead of 5. #1 reason is because the beds are really uncomfortable. Every morning I woke up with stiffness in my back. Another reason I had to knock a star off the rating was because of the room keys. I was at the front desk literally every day because their keys just stop working. Even when I made it a point to keep any electronics away from the key card and follow their instructions to the letter - I still had to go get my card redone every dang day. That was a huge nuisance. Finally, whosever idea it was to have two elevators per side... slap them for me please. I waited longer for the elevator sometimes than I did at the security line at the airport getting to Jamaica. Overall, Hilton Rose Hall is a wonderful place and a relaxing vacation with amazing staff and more than decent food. I recommend this resort wholeheartedly. Read less

Our family of four (children aged 5 and 9) spent 7 days at Hilton Rose Hall Resort in August 2019 for our second visit to this resort. We returned to the resort after visiting last summer, as the kids had a wonderful time last summer and wanted to return. For some background and perspective, we have seen a variety of resort brands and locations over the years. My wife and I have taken around a dozen vacations to Carribean all-inclusive resorts over the years, including trips to Jamaica, Punta Cana, Riviera Maya, St. Thomas USVI, St. John USVI, and we were married in Antigua. In our years prior to children, my wife and I would have gravitated to other resorts in Jamaica, such as Secrets, or more distant options from the airport to enjoy more pristine beaches, but with young children at the focus of our lives now, there are a lot of reasons that this resort became an ideal choice for us and generated two great vacations that we will never forget with the kids. The on-site water park offers endless hours of fun, the kid's and teens clubs have plenty of entertainment options, the staff is great with kids, and the proximity to the airport makes for very easy travel for families. Here is a rundown of some of the different features and experiences: CHECK IN AND ARRIVAL: While the entry is plenty nice enough for us (renovations are planned), if you must have a wildly ornate and luxurious entry with a massive main lobby that you find a some resorts, you won't find it here.. It's decent, but not over-the-top like other resorts. The bell staff is very kind and helpful from the moment you step out of the car until you settle into your room. Your bags are secure and in good hands at all times and they give a thorough run down of the features of your room. However, during both years of visiting Hilton Rose Hall, we found the check-in process to be very slow. The staff is pleasant and helpful, and drinks and cool towels greet you in line, but the extensive time it takes and the seemingly countless steps they have to complete in their system to get you checked in, is very tedious, especially if you are waiting in line for others to check-in before you. I also had to return to the front desk both years later in the day to activate my card on file to allow items to be charged back to the room. I appreciate the card security, but it would seem this should be a more automated option offered at the time of check-in, since the card is already put on file. FACILITIES AND ROOMS: As other mentioned, the rooms are fairly basic. If you need the massive, marble-lined high end features, there are other resorts to consider. We spend very little time in the room, so this is never a priority for us. They rooms are clean and well maintained, despite showing some age. In room WiFi coverage is marginal at best. I typically migrate to the coffee shop to check email, as the coverage is much better. POOL AND BEACH: The onsite water park is the main selling point of the resort. The family had a great time and spent hours there each time we have visited. The small slides and lazy river are suitable for both adults and young kids. The large slide is a blast, but probably not ideal for young kids. My 5 year old did not ride, but was having so much fun elsewhere, it didn't matter. The staff do what they can to limit hoarding of tubes by guests, but it still happens. With a little patience, and we got a tube each time. Some guest purchased tubes in the gift shop, but we never saw the need. The beach is good compared to typical east coast USA beach, but not great by Caribbean standards. 5 of the 7 days we visited this year had very cloudy water and poor viability. The last 2 days were decent and we finally got some decent underwater GoPro footage. There is a lot of sea grass upon entry and the better soft sand bottom areas are generally closer to the roped barrier. There are some exposed rocks near shore, but no real need for water shoes. The slope is gradual and the depth is only about chest high at the deepest spot, so this is a plus for kids or non-swimmers. If you must have that post-card like white sand beach, you may be disappointed. There is also a large pool at the center of the resort that hosted a lot of entertainment during the day and was open all night for after-dark swimming. FOOD AND DRINK- The food and selection is generally very good at this resort. Be sure to get at least one of your dinner reservations at Three Palms. By far the best dining experience at the resort and one of the best we have experienced in Jamaica. The wait and bar staff is fantastic, and if you are lucky enough to have Smiley wait on you, you will surely have a great time. Other a la carte dinner spot are of very good quality too, and we really didn't have a bad dinner experience. The beach BBQ night is also a very good buffet option and we were lucky enough to visit for Jamaica's Independence Day each year to enjoy the feast and festivities. Lunch options are plentiful with Mangos offering sit down or carry out a la carte options near the water park, made to order pizzas near the beach and a new feature this year included a terrific Jerk bbq hut near the preferred beach area. We never visited the buffet for lunch, as we preferred to stay near the swimming and beach attractions. Breakfast at the buffet is good and large variety. It's just a bit chaotic and the seating area is huge, as it's the only breakfast option. Last year, the Italian Restaurant offered a quieter sit down restaurant location, but that was not offered during our visit this year. The coffee shop (open until 2am) is a nice feature with typical barista service drinks, self serve coffee, and a variety of pastries and an endless supply of massive cookies (be sure to try the peanut butter cookies) The bars and drink options were pretty much on par with most all-inclusive. Daily frozen options and well drinks at the busy spots. Some more top shelf liquor brands can be found at Three Palms or the lobby bar. Red Stripe is the only beer that matter in Jamaica. STAFF: The staff is top notch and offer consistently great customer service. We had no bad encounteres either year that we visited and highly recommend. We tend to tip when able, but noticed no difference in service if we didn't have a tip readily in hand. OVERALL: I would highly recommend Hilton Rose Hall for families traveling with children. It is a perfect balance of fun and excitement for the kids with service, convenience, and amenities for parents to have a spectacular vacation, too. Read less
