We were at Beaches Ocho Rios from July 23rd to the 30th. Our trip was excellent, and we had very few issues and those issues were very insignificant and not worth the hassle really. Our flight from Charlotte landed on time and since we arrived at 10am the immigration lines were empty. We were through immigration, customs, and grabbed our checked bag and were in the Sandals/Beaches lounge within about 15 minutes. Another 15-20 minutes and we were on our way to the resort. We arrived about 1:15 and the drive was quick and painless. We did make a stop at the halfway point for drinks and rest rooms. Our room was ready upon arrival, which was great, but we weren’t expecting it due to our early arrival. We were in beachfront walkout #2106. For us the location was perfect. Our luggage arrived at the room within 30-45 minutes. We changed and headed for the beach! Vanecia was our housekeeper and she was great about working around our schedule. If she saw us she would make sure and clean it when we were at lunch or out and about and she was super friendly! The rest of it I will break down into sections and will try to cover as much as possible. Beach: yes, if you have been to Negril or Turks and Caicos it is small, but I was surprised how much bigger it was in person than I thought it would be from looking at pictures online. There were always chairs available and I was told the resort was just over 90% and would have been higher but some rooms had to be set aside in case any tested positive and would have had to quarantine. There was not much in the way of chair saving at the beach, a few at the pools but it wasn’t ridiculous to the point you couldn’t find a spot if you arrived after 7:30am like we have seen at other resorts. As for previous comments or reviews about the beach being rocky…it’s a beach, but the rocks weren’t deadly as some have made it sound. Just watch your step…overall the sand was quite nice as it is on most beaches in Jamaica. The East beach was never crowded but there were only about 10-20 loungers over there although if you needed more, they would get them for you. Yes, there are vendors on the East Beach side that would holler at you to come shop. I did one afternoon and spent some time not only shopping but just talking to them and they are very nice. Jackie runs the stand closest to the resort fence and she is wonderful. I mentioned that my youngest son loved mangoes and the next day she saw me and called me over and gave me 6 or so small mangoes. That was so nice and unexpected but totally appreciated! If you don’t want or need anything a simple ‘No, thank you’ was all it took, and they wouldn’t hassle you. Pools and waterpark: We didn’t spend a lot of time at the pools since we are beach people, but our two boys would go up there and spend the afternoons at the swim up bar, pools and the waterpark. I did do each slide once and they were quite fun. The main pool was usually very busy all day and depending on the activities could be quite loud. Drinks could sometimes take a few minutes at the swim up bar, but they were very good about getting around quickly. If you didn’t want to wait there was a walk-up bar that serviced the BBQ park and pizza place that was not but a few steps from the swim up bar or the main bar was at the opposite end of the main pool and was in the shade too. Restaurants: Our first night we went to Neptune’s and since all the reservation spots were taken, we walked up. But knowing it was going to be busy we went at like 6:40pm and only had a 5-minute wait. Now those who came after us at 7-7:30 yes, they had considerable waits, but I don’t expect to be seated quickly at home when I arrive at a popular restaurant at 7:30pm…manage your expectations or adapt your time schedule and there are no issues. We had reservations 4 nights and went without twice. The other night we didn’t have reservations we went to Out of the Blue but again knowing it would be busy we went at straight up 6:30. We got a table promptly, but had we been 10 minutes later we would have waited about 45 minutes because it filled up right from the open. The nights we had reservations we were always seated immediately. We enjoyed all our meals and I do like good food and everything we had was good to great except for the first night at Neptune’s I had a pasta dish (I forget what it was now) and the sauce didn’t taste fresh it tasted more canned to me but aside from that everything else was great the whole week. I have zero complaints about meal service, yes there were a few times when drink refills like water were perhaps a bit slow but we always got what we needed. The staff were working super hard and were doing the best they could, and it did appear to me they were a bit short staffed. The servers at the Bayside buffet at breakfast deserve medals, since they had to serve the portions to us, they were all over the place. There were often only one person working 2-3 stations simultaneously. They would serve me the fruit I wanted then hop over to get someone a bagel and then over to the meat/cheese station to serve that and then they repeated that process all service long. After the first morning we got in the groove and it was never a long wait at breakfast and we normally ate between 7:15 and 8am. Bar service was normally quick and efficient. The biggest wait would be at the swim up pool bar in the afternoons but that is to be expected. Anywhere else I never waited more than a minute or two at the most. The Opa bar above the pier is my favorite. And the crazy thing is there were many times I was the only one there. There were a few times there was a good crowd, but it was never full. That was my favorite evening hangout after dinner. Also a nice spot to sit and enjoy a drink during the day. The grounds were nice as usual and as expected from a Sandals/Beaches resort. There were a few places that needed a touchup of paint or some work here and there but nothing that detracted form my experience. They were constantly working on repairs and/or painting different areas. My house needs some paint and touchup work too… Concierge: They were extremely helpful with anything we needed from reservations to simple questions. Kiona checked us in to our room and I mentioned we were glad to be back in Jamaica for ackee and saltfish, mango and ackee patties and they next day she delivered a place of piping hot and fresh ackee patties the chefs prepared for us. She also brought my son a plate of freshly sliced mango. That was so above and beyond what we would have expected but I really appreciated her taking the time to do that for us. My kids loved the patties and mango! Cabanas: We rented beach cabanas twice, once for a morning half day and another for the full day. The service was good both times but if you rent the beach cabana keep in mind every time you order food they have to go all they way to the top of the resort to the BBQ park to get it. It takes a few minutes to get there and back plus time for the food to be prepared. Not to say they were slow but that is quite a long way to go. My kids ordered at different times so it resulted in two trips just for us. So if you order food don’t expect them to be back to get you a drink (that isn’t already in the provided cooler) for a good 20-30 minutes. For the money spent I am not sure if I would do it again at this resort just due to the time for them to get even a simple food item (again, not the cabana butlers fault just how the resort is laid out) but it is a good place if you want to be out of the sun with both a lounger and chairs and a cooler for water, soda and beer. If we didn’t have a beachfront walkout room and were up in the Caribbean village I would have been ecstatic with the beach cabana. Spa: we had a 1-hour couples massage and it was great. They did have to do some things differently due to covid, such as wearing gloves during the treatment, but I didn’t notice, and it didn’t impact my experience at all. In fact, I forgot until about 45 minutes in that they were wearing the neoprene gloves. The returnee’s dinner was held in the grassy courtyard by the tennis courts. It was an efficient service and not too much wasted time. They were pretty well on it from start to finish. The food was good, and it was nice to meet many of the staff. We enjoy chatting with them. Our room as I mentioned was a beachfront walkout and it was perfect for us. We were between the watersports and the beach bar. The room was very quiet, and we never heard our neighbors and barely heard much of anything from outside. It wasn’t the biggest room we’ve had but it fit the 4 of us fine and was adequate for our needs. It was nice being about 10 steps from the sand. The covid testing process was quick and efficient for our return. It didn’t take more than 20 minutes total and we were off to do whatever it was we were doing prior to. In summary if you wanted to find things to complain about you could. I would have eaten more snacks if it were self-serve but since it wasn’t I saved a few pounds and trust me I didn’t go hungry. I mean did I really need the 4th beef patty that day…or the 3rd ice cream cone? Probably not. I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this property even though it is quite small. It never felt crowded and most everything went off without a hitch. If you can’t get a reservation for dinner, then I suggest you go early so you can avoid a 1+ hour wait and if not then just expect a wait. I’m sure I forgot a lot of things, but this covers the highlights. Read less

Although we had a few problems, management was always very helpful in resolving any problems. We rented the cabana daily and had a great host - Dukel was excellent. He always anticipated what we wanted and had it ready and waiting. Jerome from the BBQ place - was a "mind reading" and went over and beyond to assist the group. Lacyon was great too and really help us with dinner reservations. The water activities were great too -a special tanks to the ladies at the reservation desk. Read less

The resort needs to spend more money to renovate the water park area from the infant slide area that doesn’t have proper water jets functioning to the foam fish that’s literally falling apart, to the rusty building facades in some areas (not terrible). We also were disappointed when we showed up for our sunset photo shoot and the family before us showed up an hour late for their shoot causing us to have to schedule a second shoot to get all the photos we wanted. They should have told the other family that they’d have to reschedule, or that they had a hard stop. The major draw is the Activities Coordinator, Tom Cruise, who clearly loves what he does and makes every child feel special. He keeps them active and laughing. Make sure you see him go down the red slide at the water park! Thanks Tom! Read less
