This was our fifth trip to a Sandals property in Jamaica. The property has been renovated very nicely. There were some small cosmetic issues with messy caulking in the bathroom, and a slight leak from the shower as a result. The restaurants and public spaces were all in terrific condition (the Japanese restaurant closed during our trip for renovations, but they served in an alternate location). We had some lovely meals in the French, Greek and Japanese restaurants, though we'd have enjoyed a hibachi restaurant as an option. Being Italian from New York City, the Italian restaurant was OK, but not as good as others we've had at Sandals. The buffets were sufficient, though did not have a many options as other Sandals we have visited. If you have the opportunity to have breakfast in the Greek restaurant, ask for the "Christmas drink" (sorrel drink with ginger). Very tasty. All of the restaurants were very accommodating about the dietary restrictions of members of our group. Everyone felt safe and at ease when ordering meals and snacks. We enjoyed the fresh baked cookies that were available throughout the day in the main lobby, the lobby of the Mammee Bay Building, and in the Club Sandals lounge. The coffee available in the lobby of the Mammee Bay Building was also very tasty. The activities were a lot of fun. We tried a new version of volleyball called CrossNet. During our stay, there was a jack o'lantern making contest that was a lot of fun. We participated in several dance lessons, as well as pottery making with a local artisan. Water aerobics was fun. Kudos to Joseph, Connie, Hennessy (sp?) and the rest of the Entertainment Team. The beach and pool DJ played excellent music all week. We enjoyed our time with them. One day during the trip, fresh coconut water from the shell and sugar cane were served by the beach. Being on a tropical island, these treats should be offered every day. There as a "silent rave" one night. We'd never been to one, so it was a unique experience for us. The DJs again made it fun to dance to different types of music. Although it's not a regular Jamaican tradition, the resort pulled out all the stops for their Halloween party. Costumes. Entertainers. Music. All kept us in the mood. The Rum Bar was also a lot of fun. Great DJ each night. Excellent service. The Blum coffee shop had delicious coffee and pastries. It was a daily stop. It was worth the walk up the driveway to try its offerings. The fitness center had everything we could have needed to stick to our routines. The site does say that golf is included. However, that's not entirely true when you look into the details. The greens fees are free, but cart rental is mandatory, as is a caddie, plus club rental and shoe rental. I'm not a golfer, and the golfers in our group enjoyed their golf outing, but the added expenses should be a little more transparent. We had thought we'd have more privileges at the other nearby Sandals resort. However, there is only one shuttle between the resorts (to the other resort at 6pm and back at 9pm). To go there any other time of day requires a taxi or other transportation at your expense. As usual, we enjoyed the returning guests dinner. The food was delicious, and the singer who entertained us was very talented. We met a few new couples, and were having so much fun, we ended up being the last table still seated when the dinner was long over. The watersport offerings were excellent. We took three snorkeling tours, did some kayaking, and one member of our group took sailing lessons. The watersports staff were lovely, and gave us good reason to return for more time with them. Yes, we have some small quibbles about the resort, but they are based on years of visiting Sandals resorts in Jamaica. We did love our trip, and we chalk up the small hitches to the fact that the resort only opened in Spring of this year. Perhaps our suggestions will be taken into account going forward to make it a better experience for others when the new expansion is opened. (We have already booked our next trip to another Jamaican Sandals resort.) Read less

Our butlers Michael and Taniefa were so wonderful to us. When we go back we will ask for them specifically. Shaniese at the rum bar and Ray singing at the piano are two others who really made our experience memorable. They are such fun people and really enjoy what they do and it shows. And the entertainment captain out at the pool every day is especially amazing. The evening entertainment was great fun. All in all it was an amazing week made so by the great staff at Sandals. I will never return to Dunns. The following is in no particular order and by no means a complete list of poor service, etc. This is not our first visit to a Sandals resort with Butler. We are loyalty members which at Sandals means nothing. Butler(s) were unrelable and blamed us for all the mistakes. They NEVER apologized for any of the problems or issues encountered and would typically blame management. Yes, spoke to the Butler Manager and Club Manager. Complete and utter waste of time. They could care less about our situation. In fact we were told that at check out the Butler manager would speak to us. Guess what happened, a no-show. Upon arrival at resort provided entire written dinner plans for stay; locations and time. Butler said no problem and would make needed reservations. Of course at 6pm on day two we were called and said no reservations made for that evening for 6:30pm. The butler first attempted to hide this fact from us by saying they would provide a labster dinner in the room. (This was to make up from the previous night lobster dinner disaster in which we could not eat the meal. We waited for 1.5 hours to get lobster served that was inedible. Incredably slow service.) We said no as we wanted to eat at the french resturant. After we said no the butler then disclosed that they did not make a reservation. We never got an answer why reservations were not made for that day. Breakfast room service for day two. Request at 7:30 as I was diving that day. They called us at 7:45 to say FOOD WAS ON ITS WAY. At 8:10 I left the room without eating since this was a no show. Butler later blamed us because privacy light was on which was crap. It was off at 7:15 and back on when I left at 8:10. Butler then said they would check tomorrows order. Well she showed up at 7:15 with food for a 7:30 request. It was cold. I hate cold eggs. No longer relied on room service. The buffet was not bad for breakfast. Had a nice cold shower one evening getting ready for dinner, NO hot water. Beach seating was ok but the management has zero clue how to arrange chairs to maximize the space. Beach area in front of the Jerk Shack has NO umbrellas and random seating. This unused beach actually has sand. The primary beach has little sand and mostly rocks near the aquatic center. One day after lunch we came back to our beach chairs. They had been moved along with several others. Come to find out a wedding had been scheduled on the beach and we were located in that area. So they crammed us in front of several others to make room. We overhead a butler tell his group that they do this frequently. So what that means is those on the beach in that area may have to move without notice because management can't communicate between Wedding coordinators and Butler staff. What a joke. Food is average at best. Not one resturant knows how to cook a lobster. Every lobster was over done (steak knife to cut) and in fact at one resturant it was inedible. Jerk Shack was our go-to for lunch. Food was always great and spicy here. You have to check what night they are open for dinner as it is not often. Stayed in a skypool suite. During this time of year the water temp was 72F. The buildings that have skypools get zero sun so the water does not warm up. Oh, we later saw a skypool at night all lite up with changing colors. We could never figure out how to envoke this. This was literally at the end of our stay and figured if the Butler could not show us this feature at checkin they should not be bothered. Diving. Dove 4 days but got rather boring. Saw a total of 1 each stingray, lobster, turtle and eel and rock fish. Very little aquatic life. At this resort they come up when the first diver has 1000 psi. So basically every dive I came up with 1600-1800 psi left in tank. Max depth was 70 feet. I did not need a wetsuit as water temp was 84F. Some of the gear was in need of repair. I saw on two dives air hoses leaking, one on the dive master and one with a guest. All diving will be reef diving although they do provide night dives and a wreck dive for an additional $150. Those who want to learn can also get their cert. The dive boat is STILL out of commision. We used the snorkel boat. If you have a large number of divers you go out for one dive, come back to get a new tank then go right back out. If you have a small group they can take muliple tanks out. The dive team is very friendly and very helpful. No complaints from that team. Highly recommend you do private transportation to/from resort. We used Joe Cool and they were very reliable and friendly. We also used Club Mobay for assistance upon landing and use of the club on the return. I figure they saved us 1.5 hours on arrival as we bypassed line after line. The club on the return was also worth the expense. TIpping: not required nor did I ever see any. We did tip the Butlers but at 50% of what we expected to pay. They were actually worth no tip. Read less

We had an absolutely fantastic 5-night stay at Sandals Dunn’s River. It is a beautiful resort with awesome service, great food and a lot to do. We would highly recommend it! Overall – 5/5 Recommend? – yes, definitely Would we return? – probably not, but only because we want to try different resorts Club Mobay – totally worth it and highly recommend. We were through immigration and customs in less than 10 minutes upon arrival. Others we spoke to who arrived at the same time said it was 50+ minutes for them. Departure was great as well. Special line to go through security that was very fast and the lounge was stocked with food, snacks and drinks Shuttle to the resort – this was one area of dissatisfaction. I should have booked private transportation and definitely will next time. We landed at Montego Bay airport at 1:30 and did not get to the resort until 5:00. We sat on the bus waiting to leave for 45+ minutes and then took a 20 minute rest stop on the way to the resort Check-in - Doing the online check-in greatly reduces the amount of information you have to provide at check-in. However, it still takes too long. We arrived at 5:00 and didn’t get checked-in until about 5:25. They give you a drink and tell you about the resort but when you get there you want to get going fast, not listen to facts about the resort The resort is beautiful! The buildings, ground, landscaping, beach, pools, etc…are all immaculately kept. It is small and compact so it is very easy to navigate and figure out where everything is. Despite being small and sold out while we were there it rarely felt crowded Service is outstanding. Whether it’s in the lobby, at a bar, the pool, beach, wherever, the staff is amazing. They go above and beyond to ensure you have everything you need. They are all extremely friendly, fun to interact with and want to make sure you are 100% enjoying yourself. Restaurants – the service is slow, definitely on island time. The restaurants do feel a bit understaffed. Overall, it was the best food we have had at an all-inclusive resort. It was all (mostly) excellent. The options are great and every restaurant has a huge variety to choose from. Breakfast buffet (Saltaire) – very small but had a good selection. The smoothies were very good (4.5/5) Jerk Shack – awesome, get the sampler! (5/5) Galene Seaside Grill/Pizzeria Isola – great choices for lunch at the beach/pool. Pizza was excellent, burgers were great, quesadillas and salads very good. It does get crowded during lunch time so be patient. Also, the self-serve ice cream machine is amazing. (5/5) Banyu – Amazing, the appetizers were excellent and entrees great as well. The banana spring rolls for desert were unbelievable (5/5) Zuka – very good. Appetizers were excellent, entrees not as good (4/5) Hanami – has been relocated from the actual restaurant (under renovation) to the rooftop bar area. The sushi was absolutely delicious. The service is very slow and it took a long time to get our order but the food was outstanding. They did get several things wrong but what they brought out to us was great (4.5/5) Edessa – we only ate here for breakfast but it was great. Smoothie bowl and French toast are highly recommended (5/5) Cascata – another great restaurant with a lot of options. Everything was excellent – apps, entrees and desserts. You can’t go wrong with any of it but get the meatballs for sure! (5/5) L’Amande – this was the only subpar restaurant experience we had the entire time. Missed the mark on nearly everything. Apps were not good, prawn’s entrée was bad, steak medallions way over cooked, deserts were not good. The chicken cordon bleu was very good though. (2.5/5) Blum coffee shop – it’s off by itself in kind of a weird location but has good drinks and snacks (4/5) Activities – There is a ton to do at the resort. The entertainment team tries to get events/activities going throughout the day (volleyball, trivia, dance lessons, etc…) to mixed participation at times. But if you want to do something you can find something to do. The watersports offered are excellent. Glass bottom boat, snorkeling, paddle boards, kayaks, Hobie Cats, tubing, etc…are all included at no additional cost. We had a great time trying out the different options. The snorkeling was excellent at the resort. Tip – book the water sports a day in advance as it is normally full the day of. You can go to the aqua center to book or have your butler or concierge book it for you. The chair situation – this was the biggest (and really only) issue/complaint about the resort. The chair situation at the beach and pool is absolutely ridiculous. People start to put stuff on chairs on the beach the night before. I was up early multiple mornings and if you are not out on the beach by 6:30 am you will not get a chair near the front or with an umbrella. The pool is not as bad but the “reserving” of chairs is awful. There were dozens of times where we saw chairs “reserved” with either butler signs or personal items and the people either never showed up at all or came hours and hours later in the day. Overall thoughts and some tips and advice that would have been helpful for us to know prior to arriving: The beach is very small, blocked on one end by the Riu resort and on the other end by vegetation/construction. It’s a very nice beach with crystal clear water but is small There are multiple bars open at all times – very easy to get a drink with hardly any wait This is very much a couples/honeymoon type resort. Not really setup or conducive to groups Very quiet at night, not much activity going on Pants are not needed at the French restaurant WIFI is spotty outside Bring a Yeti – the bartenders will fill it up and it stays cold longer. Drinks melt fast in the Jamaican sun There are a lot of cool, different areas to hang out at – Rum Club, rooftop bar, multiple bars at/around the pool, lobby bar, etc… The only beer at the pool bars is Red Stripe or Red Stripe Light It’s weird that the swim up bar is in the “quiet” pool and the active/music pool doesn’t have a bar We did the Blue Hole and tubing excursion and it was a 10/10. We had an absolute blast. However, I strongly recommend checking the cruise schedule as there were two ships in port and it created massive traffic and crowd issues The staff was so incredible that it's hard to single them out but Tarzan (photographer), Tenefa, and Ketecha were especially awesome to us! From the initial encounter at the airport all the way through departure, the trip was fantastic. The room was perfect. I honestly could have done without the soaking tub on the balcony and had better chairs/ table but it was still a decent size. From our balcony (room 1302) we had too good of a view of the room below us and could see the crumpled artificial turf they were using to cover it. Bed and pillows were perfect. Housekeeping did a phenomenal job with cleaning and turn down service. The bar was restocked almost everyday. Pools were clean and I did it feel cramped. We were able to get an umbrella everyday- my husband did have to go down super early to reserve chairs before the butlers did. Food was good. I wish there were more options for lunch- like open some of the restaurants. By far, our favorite restaurant was Hanami. Fiscal (bartender at Ocarina) was superb. His drinks were the best. And he was engaging. Sheneil (our waitress) was so friendly and outgoing. She was very attentive and had special details to celebrate our anniversary. The chef came out and spoke with us, he was very gracious. Junior (the manager) kept us smiling. The hostess from the buffet at breakfast was also a ray of sunshine early in the morning. Our photographer was fun and he went along with our crazy idea of falling into the pool as he got a photo. He was fun. There were so many wonderful things about the resort, can’t wait to come back.
