On our first day we turned up in reception for the orientation, we reported to reception 10 minutes before we were due, and were told to take a seat and that someone would “scoop us up” shortly. As it was raining quite heavily we sat there for around 30 minutes before asking again if the orientation tour was happening, only to be told that it had already left, nobody had spoken to us at all to ask if we were joining the tour, so that was a slightly frustrating start to our holiday. We didn’t bother going back the next morning as in the end we just took the map and worked it all out for ourselves, but it is a big resort so would have been useful. Room We were booked into a Riviera Bamboo Grove Deluxe room and our booking (via BA) specifically said “all rooms recently refurbished and located on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th floors”. Ours was a ground floor room, which certainly wasn’t recently refurbished. We didn’t bother to complain as the room was adequate, just not as “shiny and new” as we were expecting. Cleaning We were told on check-in that the room would be serviced twice daily, for cleaning and turn-down service. On the first day our room wasn’t cleaned at all. On days 2 and 3, it was cleaned and beds made by early afternoon with a towel “animal” on the bed and a lovely note from Tina. After that, no note, no towel display and for 2 days in a row the cleaner (not Tina!) turned up at 5pm to clean the room when we were back from the beach and wanting to shower and relax before dinner, so we had to turn them away, we arranged for her to come back after 9am the following day and the same thing happened. Also, the mini bar wasn’t topped up daily so we had to ring and ask for supplies on a couple of occasions. Gym On the beachside was closed for refurbishment, leaving only the gym on the hillside, which was annoying as our room was directly opposite the one that we would have used. We were woken the first morning by the sound of drilling but didn’t really hear any more noise after that day. Dive school My husband is a PADI advanced diver, but hasn’t dived for around 12 years, so was keen to do a refresher course (pool-based initially) at the resort. He was told there was a charge of around $100 and that if he turned up at 8.15am then they would assess him and let him practice taking off his mask etc., and then if they were happy he could go straight out onto the dive boat at 9am or 12 daily. Unfortunately, the weather was very poor for all but 3 days of our stay so the boats didn’t go out most days. My husband repeatedly asked (particularly as they were all available as there were no reef dives happening), if someone would do the pool assessment, and they kept saying no. I believe the reasoning was that if he paid $100 and only got to do the pool dive that he might “sue” them. He explained that a) he was happy to pay and take the risk that the boats might not go out and b) as everyone was sitting around perhaps they could just have done this with him so that if the weather improved, he would be ready to go out on a reef dive. Unfortunately, they were not helpful or cooperative at all and having bought new equipment, my husband never got to use any of it. Pool (Bella Napoli) The gentleman who works around the pool (pool treatment, lifeguard, towel folder) was the most rude, unfriendly person we encountered in the whole resort, he didn’t engage with guests, smile or offer assistance to anyone (I know because I sat next to him for 9 days!). On one occasion we arrived at the pool at around 9am and there were no towels in the towel hut, but he had laid out towels on the beds directly around the pool. We were setting up our sunbeds under the one of the 4 tents on the next level and as there were no towels there, my husband took some off of the sunbeds that were not in use at that time. The pool guy waves his arms and aggressively asked “why are you doing that, I’ve just laid all those towels out”, and my husband responded that there weren’t any on our sunbeds and so he took them from the other beds, the pool guy shouted “just to over there to and open one of those bags and get your own, don’t touch the ones I have laid out”, I’m not sure how we were supposed to know that there were clean towels in the bags, and he made us feel very uncomfortable. Incidentally the pool was “closed for treatment” on 4 of the 9 days that we were there, I have no idea why, but it was not very convenient as the sea was very rough with a red flag on the beach, so there wasn’t any alternative where we were seated. Also, On a number of occasions during our stay there were staff cleaning white seat pads for wedding parties using bleach underneath the poolside shower (they wore protective plastic over their clothing), but unfortunately as I walked by to go to the bathroom, the gentleman cleaning the seats accidentally splashed my dress, I assumed at the time just with water). The next time I wore the dress all of the colour had been bleached out where the water had got on it. I have complained and asked for compensation and been offered 2000 Sandals points, which is not acceptable. It might have been an accident but it was entirely avoidable by not using guest areas to do maintenance. Food and Drink Overall we enjoyed the food at the resort. We ate at Kimono, Soy, Kellys Dockside, Romanos, Bella Napoli, Vista, Mariners and Tapas on the beach side and the Manor on the Hillside. We enjoyed all of the restaurants, generally good quality, tasty and good selection. The only thing that lets them down is erratic service, on more than one occasion we waited 20 minutes for drinks to arrive or to be served at all in restaurants, received the bread basket after we’d finished the starters, one of us got wine topped up and the other didn’t (and then had to wait 10 minutes to get someones attention). For some reason ordering tea at breakfast every day, we were often brought the tea bag selection straight away but then the teapot with hot water didn’t arrive for another 10-15 minutes. In general though all of the staff were friendly and efficient, particularly the bar staff. The bars, do run out of drinks though (and a resort this size you would think they could call and get replacements), they ran out of pinot grigio, sparkling wine, vermouth and baileys on individual occasions. I would expect them to say “but we’ll get some delivered if you don’t mind waiting” instead of, “we’ve run out”, with 16 restaurants and bars there must be a central place where they could call and get replacements. In a nutshell, would we come to Sandals, Ocho Rios again, yes, we would, but with the understanding that this is not a 5 star resort as advertised, so long as you are flexible and open to a bit “hit and miss” service, you’ll have a great time. There was plenty more to see and do, but I can’t comment on those that we didn’t use. Read less

From the moment we arrived to the moment we left we had issues. When we were checking in, there was only 5 in our party instead of 6 people due to a medical emergency. We were told that this is a couples resort and that we may not be able to stay due to the odd number. They had to speak to 3 different managers for them to approve this and let us stay. The check-in process took an hour and by the time we got to our rooms, they still had not brought us our luggage. Throughout our stay, we saw numerous families with just their children and groups of singles. This was obviously not a couples-only resort. One of our rooms did not have a working shower. We notified them and it was never fixed. Our rooms did not get cleaned until 5 pm most days which is typically the time when we were back in our rooms getting ready for dinner and they didn't even restock our fridges. Employees would knock on our door past 9 pm to drop off the daily newspaper and see if we wanted turn down service even when we had the do not disturb sign on the door. There were multiple times when we called room service and they did not answer or say they would call us back and never did. When calling for ice, no one would return our call or give us information on how to get some. When going to the water activities area on the beach to sign up, all the staff there were very rude. They would not let us do activities and would not explain why even after asking multiple times. All that they had to say was that they were closed or that the water was not safe that day. Instead, they just gave us dirty looks and would not respond. In the area where we stayed, there were 3 hot tubs and throughout the entire stay, only 1 of them worked. We brought it to the attention of the staff and nothing was done about it. Other people staying at the resort said that they had complained about it too. When we booked excursions through the resort, it had specific times listed saying how long they would be. Every excursion we did went 2-3 hours over that time. We asked to leave early and the staff was rude about it even though I explained this was going way over time. Most of the restaurants and bar staff were extremely friendly, we had a pleasant experience with Marsha at Kimonos. But when we dined at the Mariner, the staff was extremely impolite. After I ordered my food, I was told I had to leave because I was in my swimsuit, which was understandable, i did not realize this restaurant had a dress code since it was on the beach. So I left and my fiance went to grab the food when it was ready. The staff told him they could not take the food because I was the one that ordered it, not him. My fiance told him he was the one that kicked me out. There were also other women there wearing swimsuits. When we were checking out, they were missing one of our suitcases. We told them and the man said, "that means you aren't checking out today". I told him we were and he said our room isn't on the list so we had to go to the checkout desk to have them get another staff member to grab out luggage. After putting our bags outside of the room, we went to get breakfast and when we returned, our room card was deactivated. This was two hours prior to checkout time so we were not allowed back into the rooms. This entire experience was extremely disappointing and such a waste of money. We emailed Sandals all that they did was offer us $375 off a future stay at Sandals and that we should have said something while we were there. We had complained about issues multiple times and nothing was ever resolved. Read less

First trip to Sandals Ochi and we have mixed reviews. THE GOOD: food was excellent. We had dinner at La Gourmand and loved the food and the service. Lunch and dinner at Neptune were also first rate. The Playmakers were adorable. Oneisha, Ramona and Melvin were great! Also, Princess at Neptune was one of the best servers we had there. Cleaning staff did a nice job and we had plenty of hot water for showers. One evening they left us a nice bottle of Prosecco and a cheese/cracker/fruit place (very nice surprise). The resort grounds were beautiful, loved the koi ponds. We did not have a butler but we had no problems wit the buses. The place is huge with lots of stairs and would definitely be difficult for someone with mobility issues. THE BAD: we traveled with another couple and originally both our rooms were in the Great House overlooking the front entrance where all the buses pull in. We asked to be moved to a quieter section; they showed us other rooms that would cost us an extra $800. We told them this was not an option and we would not pay extra. Jason from the front desk was very professional and helped us relocate to the Riviera section for the same price. Our room there was okay, nothing special. The resort is dated and rooms need some attention. USB port was broken, room phone did not work properly and the toilet leaked. We had breakfast at La Gourmand. We sat there waiting for our food (approx one hour) while parties came in after us were fed. We finally called the manager over and a few minutes later our food arrived. It was bland and nobody bothered to ask how it was. Waiting an hour for breakfast is never a good way to start the day!! Probably the most upsetting part of the trip was when one of our companions was injured during a massage. The spa manager tried to dismiss the injury and then resort management gave her the run around. She ended up dealing with several staff members before they would even credit her for the massage. BTW, the “free” massage that comes with the package has a 12% service charge (also you should tip the masseuse) so its really not free. We talked to other guests and some had no complaints, others said that it’s not nearly as nice as the other properties. Would we return to Sandals Ochi or recommend it? No. I’ve worked in the hospitality industry and it is NOT a five star resort. Read less

We was a bit unsure on the feeling of having a butler but is a really nice touch, they make all the unsure things easy such as booking our trips and all meals we wanted. Also answering any unsure questions we have but also giving enough space. The wedding service was also good. Started with a pre visit call before we came to get a feel of what we wanted, included was the wedding service, a 2 tier wedding cake, cocktail drink area, a honeymoon breakfast in bed, a wedding meal for any day you want. A purple flower set for bride and for groom to wear. There are other add on but we kept it simple as was just us and no guests. We did pay for photography 75 photos cost around $1300 which I do think Is a bit over priced but our wedding service was free because we stayed over 3 nights. Great food overall (4 restaurants have to be booked, all others are walk in) Good drink menu all round (can pretty much make anything you ask for) Nice room - butler room (bar area, with sink, bedroom, bathroom and living area with tv in both rooms. A pool shared with 3 other rooms) Read less

My wife and I just returned from our third trip to Ochi, Feb '18, and Dec '18 previously. Our first two trips were amazing without more than a minor flaw or two. We may have been so awe struck because we had never traveled to a Sandals, or any all inclusive in the Caribbean, but regardless we were more than impressed. This trip, while good and definitely value for money, was just a little less dazzling. The good part is, we still had a great time with all the playmakers (shout out to Renaldo, Melvin and Oneisha, we always have a great time with them) and the entertainment is always spot on (I forget his name, but the Entertainment Manager is a great MC and the manager in training, Neil, is great as well). Our butlers Nardia and Sashima took care of us as well with multiple surprises and good service that made the trip a little extra special. The quality of the food and alcohol is consistently good to great as well. There just seemed to be less attention to service and we did have to ask for room items (ie coffee, towels, water) to be replaced multiple times as they were not regularly stocked, some extremely slow service at breakfast or having the wrong order and extremely rushed feeling at Valentino's (along with a surprisingly poor table location, with butler service, you usually receive a prime table location in the restaurant as we did at all other locations) which usually has some of the best service and ambiance. We still had a great trip, and received quality service, just some things we noticed that we hope are a one-off thing for Sandals. One thing that did drive us insane, this trip and last, was the constant push from Loyalty and Travel to re-book. I get that they are a business and want to get you to spend more money while you are having a great time on site, however, we were hassled with constant phone calls, sometimes multiples in one day, and some very pushy and rude folks trying to get us to book another trip. Tariq was the only on in Loyalty that treated us like more than walking dollar signs. Over all, we will likely return, but hope that things will return to their original awe factor. Read less
