Our family of five (two adults and three children, ages 20, 17 and 8) recently returned from a week-long vacation to Moon Palace Sunrise. Full disclosure - We upgraded to become Diamond Elite members on the first full day of our trip; as such, we got to enjoy many more benefits during our stay and had an absolutely impeccable vacation, mostly due to the amazing service that we received from pretty much all staff members, from check-in to check-out. I honestly don't think all of it was due solely to our being Diamond members; much of it was simply because of the resort's amazing staff and how much they want to help the guests. ARRIVAL: Upon arrival at the hotel, we were greeted promptly by the bellman, who took our luggage, put tags on them and gave us our receipts. He gave flowers to the girls / women in our group, and we all got cool, wet towels. Since it was not yet noon and we had arrived straight from the airport in an air-conditioned, private transport, the towels were not really needed but they smelled nice! I highly recommend that, even if you can use the resort's shared transportation service, to still splurge for a private van, especially if you have at least four people in your party. The fact that you do not have to wait at the airport for others and then possibly cram into a van with a bunch of other people - but you can just be greeted, go to the van, get in and go - is a really fantastic way to start your vacation. Price isn't too bad - for our party of five, RT private transport was $55. CHECK-IN: This was a breeze. I wish I remembered the name of the lady who helped us (she was working the Elite members' desk on August 3, @ noon) but she was super nice and helpful. She gave us two options of presidential suites; the one that was ready at that time was on the ground floor, which we do not like, so we said we would wait for the other one (on the third floor) to be cleaned and prepared. This would take several hours, but we were fine with that we figured we'd go grab some lunch and then roam around a bit. However, on her own, without prompting / asking from us, the wonderful staff member offered us a hospitality suite to use in the meantime, so we could relax or change into our swimsuits after lunch if we wanted to do so. This was definitely a very welcome gesture and very much appreciated! She then didn't forget about us, and promptly called AND texted us when our room was ready, a little before 4 pm. Her level of service was incredible and again, I wish I remembered her name so she could be thanked properly. DINING / FOOD: We ate dinners mostly at The Grand (see my review for that resort) but we did dine a few times at Sunrise and once in Nizuc. Both Agra and Momo were very good, with awesome service. The chef at our teppanyaki table was extremely entertaining and made for a fun night for all of us. I've been to teppanyaki restaurants in Hong Kong and Tokyo, where it's a pretty fancy affair and you can get real kobe beef at $150-$200 per person and the chefs do not entertain and take their work very seriously, as well as American hibachi restaurants where the chefs act like goofs and the food is pretty inedible. The teppanyaki tables at Momo are a good happy medium - food was prepared pretty well and was nice and fresh, while the entertainment was spot-on and well-done. Just the right amount of "fun" without being overly cheesy. The attention from the servers was absolutely amazing the night we went; we almost felt as if we were in a private dining room, despite how busy the place was. My husband and I experienced the same at Agra the night we went there for dinner - excellent and attentive service, with food that rivaled what I've had in locally India. As for the other dining options - the Italian restaurant in Sunrise for dinner was fine, although nothing spectacular. However, again, the service was very good. Buffets at Sunrise were pretty decent, considering it's a buffet, especially for lunch. The kids went there for dinner one night and enjoyed the Mexican theme. Breakfast at the Nizuc buffet was not very good, unfortunately. The quality of the food there seems to have declined considerably since our two prior visits so we did not go back to Nizuc for any other meals. Still, even with the disappointing breakfast that morning, the service - once again - was gracious and attentive, and more than made up for the food. ROOM: Our presidential suite (1601 and 1603) was huge, but we knew that going in, having stayed in one before. The view of the ocean was amazing, and my husband and I watched the sunrise from bed every morning. Our room was cleaned promptly everyday, and all minibars were restocked daily. We would leave notes if we needed something specific - like more shampoo or juices or sodas - and the housecleaning staff always gave us more than asked for, to the point where we joked if they thought we were staying for a month! The towels were nice and fluffy (no holes, unless our last visit; see my 2015 review), and the room was kept clean all the time. We left a tip everyday, but it wasn't taken the first day, so we had to leave a note that pretty much said thank you, this is for you. Only then, would the maid take the tip left out for her. The only weird thing was that, for turn-down service, the maid would sometimes just barge right in after knocking once, but we did not hear her knocking. Once, we asked her to return in another few minutes as we were just getting ready to leave for dinner (she never did return so we didn't get turn-down service that night), and a couple of other times, we just told them we did not need turn-down. These latter times, she would pass off small boxes of chocolates to us so we'd still have those; very thoughtful of her! SERVICE: The service and kindness shown by pretty much all staff members during our stay was very much noticed and appreciated. From the person who checked us in (again, I wish I remembered her name!) to Edwin, who took over as our DC, and also Nelson, who did wonders to book spa appointments for my entire family (including squeezing my girls in for manicures and pedicures at the same time the very same day - TWICE!), we were impressed at just how amazing the service was during this visit. Even when staff members could not identify us as Diamond members - so you can't say that was the only reason they were nice to us - they smiled and said "Hola" in passing by the pools or in the hallways or in other public areas. The golf cart drivers were always prompt and friendly and, with the exception of one driver who seemed as if he used to be a NYC cab driver (without the anger and cussing, haha), all were safe and considerate of their passengers. Our pool concierges in the Diamond section of the Sunrise pool were incredible as well, offering attentive yet unobtrusive service throughout the day. My husband scraped his leg on the side of the pool one afternoon and they took such good care of him, calling the lifeguard over immediately to clean and bandage his wound, and even dragging over chairs for him to prop up his leg so he would be more comfortable while he was being attended to. He thought it was overkill - it was a simple scrape and they acted like he was having a heart attack - but that is the level of attention that we received from pretty much everyone at Moon Palace! DEPARTURE: The bellboy showed up to our room to pick up our bags a few minutes before we had asked for him, which was very much appreciated. Edwin was very efficient checking us out, despite the credit card machines / readers not working at the time. I had used the app to check out our room charges that morning and everything was correct, so no issues there. Everything worked seamlessly, and we were able to grab some lunch at the buffet before we headed out. OTHER OBSERVATIONS: Yes, there was a lot of seaweed on the beach so we never went there, but you can't fault the resort for that. Besides, employees were out all day long, trying to scoop up and remove the seaweed, but Mother Nature always wins! The resort and its facilities were kept very clean throughout our stay. I did at times see room service plates and trays left outside rooms, but there is no magical fairy that can appear to whisk away such things within seconds. We will even see these things when staying at the Ritz or Four Seasons. We saw a lot of loungers and chaises saved as early as 7.30-8 am, when my husband and I would be out for walks, so that does seem to be a problem, especially on the Nizuc side. The walkways can be slippery at times, especially the zero-entry into the pool with the swim-up bar, near the kids' pool; we saw a few people slipping and even falling there at times, so more warning signs may be helpful. We ordered room service one morning for breakfast and, granted, the food was not piping hot but we also understand that the kitchen is not right next door. It is a HUGE resort, people! They have to cart the food over from the main building, then possibly deliver food to others, and also walk down hallways and possibly up stairs. They cannot just magically fly to our room, as much as we want them to. We tried ordering room service for dinner one night for the kids but were told the wait was almost 90 minutes, due to many orders. Not a big deal; we did not fault the resort for that and was appreciative they gave us a heads up. The kids just went to the buffet and had their dinner there instead - easy enough! One final note ... We did see quite a few (skinny) cats roaming the property, but really, are people that bothered by them? They better not travel anywhere more exotic than the Moon Palace then, because you've got stray animals roaming the streets in some of the most vibrant and historical cities around the world. Besides, it's not like the cats were attacking or following people; just walk past them, don't bother them, and they won't bother you. We also saw a family of deer at times, along with iguanas and coatis. Our kids loved these sightings! These animals just want to be left alone and, if anything, I would expect THEM to be writing reviews online, complaining about all the people taking pictures of them and following them around. So for people to complain about their presence on the resort grounds when the animals are doing nothing more than living, that is just ridiculous, IMO. All in all, we had an amazing - and our best yet - visit to the Moon Palace and will definitely be back very soon. In our opinion, the resort has really stepped up its game since we last visited in 2015, and while the facilities and rooms and the tangibles all were pretty much the same, it was the service that showed "above and beyond" efforts from many staff members. There are a lot of beautiful resorts in Mexico and other locations, but it is this incredible attention to details in their service that led us to become Diamond members, and will have us returning for more visits!
