I worked my fingers to the bone to provide a special family holiday for my wifes 50th birthday. On the third day I contracted the Cyclospora virus. We ate nowhere other than within the hotel complex itself. I understand Cyclospora is very common in the region. From here on my holiday was effectively over, I spent the rest of the time running between toilets and enduring all the symptoms that the virus brings. While global terrorism is a very real threat to us all I think to let a huge arsenal of unexpected fireworks off at 1.30am is mindless, thoughtless and downright stupid. My wife & kids awoke in a hysterical state...I was awake as I was vomiting through the Cyclospora. Turns out this was the end of the 'Sand and Soul' festival within the hotel. The fireworks i understand but at 1.30am ... Really ??!? Crazy beyond words. Clearly there is a huge seaweed issue on the beach. The build up on the shoreline is immense with countless tons from the waters edge to roughly 50 meters out. Thick brown gloop with the most intense nauseating strong sulphur smell from the decaying seaweed emanating up and around the pool area. Three tractors were working hard with machinery to clear the build up. However above all the small was dreadful .... and this was much more that a slight 'wiff'. Truly nauseating. So on the final day ... lying in the shade feeling dreadful, pool area awash with the odour of rotting seaweed, different music booming from the three beach bars, low flying aircraft roaring in and out of the nearby airport, workmen at the pool cutting slabs with a high revving petrol powered saw .... words fail me . Were now home in Scotland UK, having traveled 12000 miles, almost £8000 lighter, still feeling awful and my wife now has the virus ........ Never been happier to be home. Read less

The actual staff at Moon Palace are amazing, despite my previous review regarding my reservation experience. The staff at the resort make up for everything the employees in the reservation department lack. We stayed at Moon Palace Sunrise over spring break with a large group and many people took care of all our requests prior to arriving at the hotel. About a month before our vacation, Jorge Alberto Lopez Palomino from the Vacation Planning (activities) department took care of booking all our activities. He had great communication and by booking our tours and spa services ahead of time, it saved us hours from doing it upon arrival. We are actually returning this November and I was sad to learn that he was not available to help us for this trip but happy to learn that he was promoted (well deserved). He did, however, pass my information along to the tours department and Ivette Flores has already reached out to provide assistance in booking our activities. So, we are looking forward to working with her. In addition, Beatriz Guillén Solórzano, was amazing in assisting us with restaurant reservations, again before we even arrived. When traveling with more than 20 guests, it's difficult to get seated together at the restaurants or obtain reservations. She was able to pass our information along to the Food and Beverage department who made dinner reservations for every night we were there. This eliminated the stress of waiting and attempting to make dinner arrangements while we were there. More importantly, she corrected the wrong that the room reservation department made and was able to keep our group together by granting our room request. Even while we were there, she was available for any questions and provided her undivided attention. The poolside service is remarkable and the staff put forth every effort to make guests comfortable and happy. I wish I had all their names to list them here. Ernesto, the ice cream man, is very entertaining and just loves his job. Restaurants are delicious and the staff are very attentive. There was only one night where we encountered a staff member who was very rude. She was the hostess at Pier 8. She said that she could not accommodate a group of 20, which would have been acceptable had the restaurant been full, but it was not. In addition, she ended her statement with, "No restaurants at Moon Palace can seat 20 people toghether," which is untrue, because every restaurant (Palapa Asadero, Arrecifes, Momo, Riviera Maya, and La Trattoria) we had been to up to that day had us all sitting together. After much debate, she finally said we could be seated for dinner. In fact we requested that our two tables of 10 just be near each other and although the restaurant was fairly empty, she sat us on opposite ends. The lobby bar has nightly live music an entertainment and was where we spent most nights....highly recommended. Room: Our Presidential Suite was stunning and ocean front. We could not have booked a better room. In addition, we received nightly turndown service along with little pillow chocolates. Suggestions: They have a policy regarding unattended lounge chairs. Supposedly, MP does not allow guests to save lounge chairs by the pool, however, they do not enforce it. There were mornings that I woke up early (4 a.m.) and as I took a walk around the pool area, there would already be pool chairs with towels on them that guests were saving to use later that day. One morning as I was laying out by the pool, there was a row of 16 lounge chairs that were "saved" by a guest earlier that morning and didn't have anyone showing up to use them until 10:00 a.m. Again, no one enforced the "no saving chairs" policy. I would suggest that a pool attendant actually enforce that policy. One other suggestion is that they should have hand sanitizer dispensers throughout the buffet area, like cruise ships do. I believe there is one at the entrance of the restaurant, but I'm not 100% sure. Of the 20 guests in our group, about half came down with a stomach virus, but I want to make clear that we do not blame the hotel for. I'm pretty sure it was NOT due to the food at the hotel, because we all ate the same things but didn't all get sick, so I'm pretty sure it was due to guests spreading it to to other guests. This could have happened by touching the shared serving utensils at the buffet. Some people who are sick may not exercise proper hygiene or hand washing and touch the serving utensils. They may not even show symptoms of being ill, yet, but are unintentionally spreading the virus to others who use the same serving utensils. One way the restaurant could limit the spread of the virus, is by providing hand sanitizer dispensers throughout the buffet area. All in all, Moon Palace deserves 5 stars for excellent service and a beautiful facility that does not disappoint. Read less

Attention to the Diamond Elite members and guests was better than a couple of our stays, but I admit that there were a couple of things that seemed a little less 5 star. Food was good but not super great. One place had terrible service (don't remember name - a steakhouse over by the Grand on the beach) and communication wasn't always that great. The buffet restaurant in Sunrise was actually closed for a week and we never heard about it except for our waitress who couldn't get us another mimosa at breakfast one day. But on the other end, we had a private dinner in one of the presidential suites and it was wonderful! And Felipe Castillo from room service was a fantastic server for the meal itself. Overall, we'll definitely go back to Moon Palace in Cancun. Read less
