I'll start by saying that this review is in comparison to when we visited Secrets Akumal a few years back. So to start we were very pleased to receive the usual warm welcome with the nice cool towel, cold drink of our choice, simple check in and then the golf buggy transport to our room. All of this is a nice touch and makes the start of the holiday a bit more special. We had a tropical view room which is pretty much the most basic room you can get here (cheapest). I did send the hotel a cheeky email before we arrived trying to get a free upgrade, explaining that we had booked ocean view and preferred club experience prior to covid kicking off which we obviously had to cancel. As the prices had increased significantly I could no longer afford this same level and asked if they could bump us up a notch or two. The email I received back was polite but made it clear that any upgrades would mean paying extra and the upgrade option was made available to us at check in but again it was a money making attempt which we declined. Rooms are big, well furnished, good beds etc... but we both noticed that certain parts were looking a bit tired in places. Walls have a few scuffs and marks on them which look like squashed mosquito stains (we added a few more unfortunately). One warning, the room had a step down to a separate seating area. No idea why it is on two levels but that step nearly had me a few times on the first couple of days. Even though it had a auto light fitted to it, it is still easy to forget about it and I went over it on more than one occasion. Balcony was big enough for us but again looked a bit tired, needs a good jet washing and the soft furnishings need a clean. Hotel is very nice, lobby is quite grand, pools are nice but again the sunbeds are looking tired in places and I noticed that the sunbed cushions had the odd splatter of bird poo on them that didn't seem to be cleaned while we were there. Not a huge issue as you put towels over the cushions anyway but there did seem to be a towel shortage at certain times of the day (probably because some people seem to need 3 each!!). Another word of warning to the British, the hotel will be mainly full of Americans, who as we all know can be loud and very annoying to listen to. They also seem to demand certain things from the staff that they could easily achieve themselves which really grips me but you end up getting used to them. Restaurants are decent and coco Café is again my favorite part of the hotel. Food around the pool is also decent during the day. Beach is lovely when it is clear of sea weed but they do lose the battle with that which for us sort of puts the beach/sea area off limits. Staff are all friendly, happy to help and all work very hard to please. I'm not going to single any individual out as they are all good. We sort of got the impression from the odd one or two that they were kind of expecting a tip for their service. Just a slight linger on occasion but certainly nothing pushy. Daytime activities are good. Lots to do if you want to such as the activities by the entertainments team (pool & beach volley ball, archery, ping pong, crazy game, arty stuff, dancing, Spanish lessons etc...) Other games available such as tennis, croquet, bat n ball stuff on the beach, bowls etc... Evening entertainment is ok and the fairly standard stuff for a 5 star. There was a couple of good singers on at the lobby bar and we enjoyed the mind reader who did the rounds on the guests who entertained us with a couple of card and mind reading tricks. Overall we had a good 10 days. The hotel is older than the one in Akumal and is starting to show it. As with Akumal we loved seeing the wildlife such as the large iguana type lizards and the Mexican type of raccoons. Would we go back to Secrets Maroma Beach?? Probably not unless it had a revamp but if you can get a decent price when comparing it to the other Secrets in the area then it would be well worth a visit. It is still a million times better than anything you get around the Mediterranean all inclusive resorts. Happy to answer any questions anyone sends my way. Read less

Beautiful Resort and wonderful service! We love Maroma and loved it again this time. There is seaweed on the beach but the resort does a good job of keeping it at a minimum. Service is excellent, we especially appreciated our Concierge Henry and Beach Concierge Alex for going above and beyond. We will be back again soon!

When you arrive at this property everyone says “welcome home” at first I thought that was a really neat way to welcome someone but you truly don’t understand that until you leave. This place became home and these people became friends. If I could mention every single person on the property I would because we had an amazing experience with every single person and place we came into contact with. Luckily we were there for a full 10 days and 9 nights. We had arrived and met with Alejandra in the preferred club for check in. She was so kind and so easy to work with. Explained everything easily. Then we met with Mariola in VIP services and she and I clicked right away. She was extremely helpful and it was always nice to see her and Alejandra in the preferred lounge daily when we went to say hello, get snacks, and I had to get a vanilla cappuccino and a margarita from Gonzalo at the bar. He was so friendly and it was a highlight of our trip to get to know him and tell him about our adventures we were going on. Our concierge Paola was the best and I wish I could have her at every hotel we ever travel to ever. Not only was she extremely capable in her role she was SO FUN and SO NICE. She checked in with us anytime she saw us and even surprised us with a cute banner on our anniversary (our honeymoon had been pushed back to our anniversary lol. Thanks Covid) we had also made a special request for our last dinner and she made it happen seamlessly. We are so blessed for her. Everyday the entertainment team killed it getting people to dance and even had us playing angry birds! Lol! Like adult summer camp. Felix was great and helped us with wine bread and painting and I made an instant friend in Francisco on the night entertainment team. We had three massages and we were both lucky enough to have Merli each once. WOWWWW! I also had sandy for a massage and she was amazing! We also did the fish spa experience with Gabriela and with Joaquin. They were so kind and it was very nice to talk to Gabriela about some of the things we had in common! She is an extremely bright young lady. The check in team was also amazing. Always made us feel right at home. During our stay we did two off site trips. One to Isla Muejeres and one to Xplor fuego. Thank you Roberto for your help in choosing the right ones for us! They were awesome!!! Lastly we did have a romantic dinner by the beach and also a day where we had a cabana by the beach. Ismel and efrain took care of us that day and we’re above and beyond on our service. Paola our concierge also came down to ensure we were getting everything we needed! We had a great time and will definitely return to Secrets Maroma. Thank you to the entire staff for all you do. Read less

Complete Reservation Failure: originally made a reservation for Secrets Maroma Beach for February 1-9., this was a special trip planned for my wife and I. This was made in July 2021; subsequently my wife lost her brother, a doctor, due to a devastatingly aggressive form of cancer and she was not in the mood to travel but we changed the dates to January 30 to February 5 to accommodate some issues that had to be taken care of. Subsequent to that, on January 4, I sent an email requesting cancellation and was advised that I had to call to cancel. I called on January 11 and spoke to James at 9:45am and canceled. I advised him I did not have a new date and asked if I would receive a cancellation notice. He advised that i would not and that my information would be held and I had one year from the original date of travel to use the credit. I was nervous about that; I had paid for the first booking plus the travel insurance that allowed cancel for any reason; when I booked the second time I had to repurchase this insurance. He seemed distracted when i spoke to him and I'm left in this position. And now I'm being delayed from using my credit for my wifes birthday this year at Secrets Playa Mujeres and was told I risk missing out on the cost and possibly room type. This is absolutely outrageous. I did everything I was supposed to do; I've paid $7,000 which you have and I'm just absolutely insulted. They have to “research it” and they’ll get back to me. No guarantee of booking my trip with flights and accommodations I wanted. I sent a message to them via Facebook messenger; they gave me a phony email address to send information to. They said they’d get back to me in “3-5 business days.” Today is business day 5 and I’ve heard nothing. I honestly think they’re trying to steal my money, I have no faith in them. This is horrible. We came to Secrets for a wedding and had never been to an all inclusive resort before. It was an amazing experience and something that we are definitely going to do again! The resort is stunning and the swim up pool bar was a great place to meet new people. Every single employee goes above and beyond to make sure your experience is the best it can be. Our concierge, Roger, was incredible and really took our experience to the next level. The food at the resort was good and there was a lot of options to choose from (though it felt weird not eating Mexican food in Mexico). The only things I would probably do differently is that I would book any excursions directly with the resort and I probably wouldn’t do the Onxy dinner experience. It’s really just a table with a black tablecloth off to the side. I also wish one of the bars stayed open to 2am. There is only one bar that stays open past 6pm outside (the main lobby bar was 11pm I believe) and they close promptly at 1am. I can’t really speak for the crowd because we were with a wedding group but there appeared to be a decent mix of young and old couples. Overall, I definitely enjoyed my experience and would wholeheartedly do it again Read less
