Check-in: BREEZE! We were greeted as soon as we arrived around 11am and taken to the preferred lounge. Check-in was very easy and we soon were wandering the grounds and had lunch at Seaside. We then chilled on the beach with our coconut drinks while we waited for our room. Our room was ready at 2pm. Room: We requested 4th floor in building 4. And we got just that! Room 4408. It was perfect!!! The room was amazing, the balcony had a great view, and we honestly wouldn’t complain about a single thing! Grounds: HEAVEN ON EARTH! I am a plant freak so I took many pics of all the gorgeous plants! Now, after 10 days, we still got lost! :p Everything blends in well and the tropical setting can get quite confusing. But the second we asked someone, they not only told us where to go, but they ALWAYS walked us there without hesitation! Pool #1: We loved this pool! We loved the Manatee Bar, the view of the ocean, the events throughout the day, bathrooms close by, and our building was right beside it! We never had trouble getting chairs. Even if they all look occupied, simply ask the pool concierge and they will find you some! Bali beds: I booked the bali beds in advance and we had bed #1 for 3 days. We loved the bali bed! The staff was amazing and we loved having a setup for the day. The ONLY complaint would be the sun beds in front that come with the bali beds aren’t marked and others from the resort often wandered over and took them. One day someone actually took my towels and floats off my chairs and took them when I ran up to get pizza! But the concierge was quick to step in. I think maybe the resort needs a sign or something to notate that those chairs are reserved. But other than that, the beds were worth it! My husband had his adirondack chair in the shade and I rotated between the bali bed in the shade and the chair in the sun. Palapas: We got palapas several days too and loved them as well! Now to get front row, you have to be out there before 7am. But the beach concierge is great about monitoring chairs and enforcing the 1 hour rule. We watched him do it several times. So just like the pool, if you need help, find a concierge! Beach: Not sure it could have been more perfect! Warm water, calm waves, and beautiful trees! We snorkeled and saw so many fish, stingrays, turtles, and the beautiful reef! Also, we LOVED the short walk from our room and the pool to the beach! Restaurants/food service: Portofino- This was our least favorite restaurant but it wasn’t bad at all! Simply preference. Bordeaux- This one was my tie for the #1 slot! We ate here twice. The escargot, chicken cordon bleu, and pistachio crème brulee was AMAZING!!! The setting was beautiful and the service was incredible. Oceana- Our other fave! The outdoor setting was our favorite as far as restaurants. The food was so good!!! We went fishing one day and the chef cooked our fish for us. Seaside- We had breakfast here a few times and lunch here once. Everything was very good and the breakfast empanadas were my favorite thing they had! Market Café- I tend to prefer menus over buffets but the Market Café proved me wrong! We loved their breakfasts, had lunch there once, and dinner once as well. The outdoor seating area for breakfast was our favorite spot. Himitsu- We ate here twice as well! The sushi was very good and my husband’s fave were the spring rolls. Room service- We did a room service breakfast, several snacks before dinner, and lunch one day. Every time the food was great and the service was even better! My personal faves were the calamari, cheese board, and the sushi. My husband loves the fish fingers. Pool and beach food service- Steak quesadillas were amazing!!! As were the nachos. My husband loved the Cuban sandwich! Also PIZZA DAY IS THE BEST!!! Preferred: I know the old debate, but to us, preferred was very much worth it!!! We visited the preferred lounge several times every day. We also loved the location of our room in building 4 and used the tub on the balcony almost every day! Also, the option for Seaside at breakfast was nice to have. As long as preferred rooms are available and we can afford them, we will book preferred! Shows: So many shows! We saw them all except the Rock Show because 945pm was LATE some days. HAHA! My personal fave was The Voice… Since my husband won and got us a free 3 night stay! :) The entertainment staff is AMAZING and there is always something to do! Staff: Where do I start?!? The staff here is probably the best overall group of people we have ever met. Let me mention some of them: Santos at the Manatee Bar; Benjamin at the pop-up bars around the ppol; Carlos at the Halftime Bar; Daniel Aguilera at the pool and the bali beds; Erik at the beach and pool; Rodrigo at the pool and bali beds; Oscar on the entertainment team; Gilberto at Bordeaux; Alfredo, Ricardo, and Alan for our romantic dinner on the beach; and Claudio as our concierge in building 4. All of these people and MANY MORE made this trip what it was… THE BEST EVER!!! Excursions: We booked a fishing tour through Fernando Cat and everything was perfect! It was a quick 3 hour tour right from the beach, no car or taxi necessary. They cleaned the fish for us and we had a great dinner at Oceana! Transportation: Kalido was THE BEST!!! We stayed in Cancun one night before our resort stay, so we had 3 legs that needed transportation and Kalido made it all very easy and we will definitely use them again! Akumal: We walked into town, shopped, and visited the Buddha Garden Spa. It is a tiny town but had everything we needed just a short walk down the beach. Spas: We used both Buddha Spa and the spa at the resort. We loved them both! Honestly, from building 4, I think it was the same walking distance for both. :p At SA, we used the hydrotherapy and loved it! Buddha vs. resort spa is mainly price. Hour long at Buddha was $130 and we were in separate rooms. If that is important to you, that would be a factor. The resort spa’s hour long massage was $265, but we also had the hydrotherapy and the spa facilities. We loved them both! Checkout: We did pre-checkout the night before in the preferred lounge, arranged a checkout time with our concierge, and right at that time, someone came to the room to grab our suitcases. We simply went by the lounge to turn in our keys, and then grabbed drinks and lunch at the Halftime Bar before heading to the lobby. Easiest check out EVER!!! Read less

This resort is absolutely stunning! The grounds are like a very well maintained jungle - so green and beautiful. The rooms are well appointed, spacious and comfortable, too! The people here really make this place extra special! A huge thank you to the head sommelier, Alberto, and his assistants for taking extra care of us and our meals during the stay! We loved our private wine cellar dinner! Also, thank you to Alberto, the Portofino manager, and Antonio, Portofino waiter. Thank you to the manager at Bordeaux and Isis, the hostess. Fabiola, the activities/dining concierge was so incredible and always checked in on us. Daniel Aguilara took wonderful care of us at the bali beds all week! Make sure to reserve the beds ahead of time as they're really popular and worth every penny! And finally, a huge thank you to our building concierge, Talia. The best concierge ever!! Always took care of our concerns and reservations! This is our 4th Secrets resort in the area and we loved it! The Bordeaux, Portofino and Himistu restaurants were our favorites! Really delicious food! We do not recommend Seaside; the steaks just weren't up to par. The other guests we spoke to all said the same thing! The steak was kind of a mystery meat. We didn't get a chance to try Oceana; next time! Highly recommend trying the wine cellar dinner if you enjoy wine! The food pairings were amazing! When we were here mid-November, there was no seaweed and the snorkeling was amazing!! Saw countless stingrays, lots of fish and even a few turtles. The beach is very beautiful!! However, it is a public area so there are people outside of the resort and it can be quite a busy beach mid day.  The only reason we can't give this resort 4 stars is because of our room. We reserved well in advance, directly through the hotel, an oceanfront room. We specifically book oceanfront because the view is a must for us. Unfortunately, the room we received was on the side of building 2 overlooking the pools mostly and the roof of the bathroom/bar area, with the ocean off to the side and blocked by a wall! The room also had AC problems and we were up until 12am on our first night, after waking up at 2am, while maintenance was trying to fix it. There were no other rooms available until the middle of our stay and I hate to repack and unpack again. The supervisor told us there was nothing they could do and that they have very few actual oceanfront rooms. If the room is super important to you as it is for us, just keep this in mind. Otherwise, we're looking forward to coming back, hopefully with some of our family!  Read less

My husband and I just spent 5 nights at Secrets Akumal and we couldn’t have been happier! The food was amazing, the grounds were spectacular and the staff was extremely helpful and attentive! Snorkeling with sea turtles was a great experience and it’s steps from their beach!

This was our first time to Mexico and we were THRILLED. We have stayed at Sandals before, but I think our new favourite is Secrets! This was our first time to Mexico and we were THRILLED. We have stayed at Sandals before, but I think our new favourite is Secrets! The rooms were spacious, clean (I believe we had "Evelia" ---I may have spelled that wrong--- take care of our room). The grounds at this resort are the most beautiful I have ever seen, and the staff goes above and beyond. We saw gardeners every day making sure that the plants looked perfect---we even had a fellow show us a hermit crab he found trimming some plants near the Market Cafe! The beach here is terrific, clean, warm, and very picturesque. If you want to relax quietly, with no commotion, there's a pool for that. If you want to be part of the party, there's a pool for that, and if you want to watch the party but not be a part of the party---theres a pool for that! There is something for everyone here. Some staff members that really stood out were Guadalupe, Wendy, Eduardo, Edwin (AMAZING drinks made by this man) Qteil (amazing service by this gentleman), David, Orlando and Marysol was an absolute Delight to talk to! Henry at the Baracuda was an amazing server. He made sure we were always taken care of while resting on the beach. The ONLY con of this place, is that there is 't enough Mexican food. I would love to see more Mexican food at the resort...thats it. Everything here is wonderful. We absolutely loved it! We wish we remembered our bellmen's names---both were fantastic....we stayed from November 15th to November 22nd. This resort is so beautiful, so clean, and it's staff is exceptional. We did not have a negative encounter with ANY member of the staff---everyone was helpful, cheerful, and a pleasure to talk to....even if you don't speak spanish :) Book your trip, this place is PARADISE! I also should mention the entertainment. We watched an El Divo tribute band that was INCREDIBLE. The fire show was amazing...and the live singers/musicians were all TOP NOTCH. Also---they have hammocks, tucked away off the path---it was wonderful to lay here and enjoy the sounds of the birds. And their massages at the spa---unlike anything I have ever experienced. Magic hands! Thank you to Secrets Akumal for making our trip one to remember for many years to come! Much love from Ontario Canada! Read less
