We visited Bel Jou for the last two weeks in January. It was an amazingly relaxing and a totally enjoyable experience. When booking, we were concerned about the hotel being on a steep hill, away from the beach and the possibility of lots of steps to climb in the hotel grounds. The main level of the hotel is around floor three of the main accommodation block. This level features a small pool, the coffee shop and Lulu’s Cabana, providing an all day food and drink facility. From this level it is a few steps up to the buffet and fine dining restaurant level. The food in the buffet was always good or very good, albeit with limited choice but there was always something appetising to eat. The views from the outdoor dining area near the buffet are special. The fine dining room featured good food, expertly presented, but the room itself lacked character. A painting therein, featuring cows and pigs looking down on meat eating diners, may not be the best choice! We took the free shuttle to the beach one afternoon and enjoyed a change of scene. There was no disturbance from the nearby airport and we had no need to turn down our hearing aids! The BBQ evenings (Thursdays) were very enjoyable. These were held on the upper pool level. We liked the food, the steel bands, folk group, traditional dancers and fire eaters, on the BBQ evenings we attended (2). We quaffed (hence drinkable) Chardonnay and the Sauvignon Blanc during our stay. Not fine wines but fine enough! The cocktails were good, including non alcohol mixes. Our room was on level 2 of the main block and was comfortable and reasonably well appointed. The doors to the balcony could fit better, to ensure biting insects remained outside, although we saw only 2 mosquitoes in 2 weeks, probably because the hotel ‘fogs’ twice weekly. More surface space in the bathroom would have been an advantage. The room was cleaned and tidied, every day, to a very high standard. Much positive has been said about the staff at Bel Jou. They are lovely people, well trained and well led and are hard working. Service was consistently excellent. In summary, Bel Jou is a good value all inclusive hotel and we would certainly visit again. I always try to rate hotels based on value for the money that we paid for the holiday. We stayed with a Secret Escapes deal that included several freebies, an island trip, ocean view room and a bottle of local rum. As with all things, you get what you pay for and Bel Jou is one of the value for money hotels on St Lucia, rated a 3T plus with Tui. Yes, you can pay twice as much and stay at the Rendezvouz but for actual value for money, Bel Jou is highly recommended. Location is a downside but shuttle bus to beach should you wish and the steps (no lifts) mY be a challenge for those folk who are maybe not as mobile. I can only reiterate what others have said about the plus points which include the staff who are fantastic and take a real interest in the guests. The manager Dean leads by example and was very visible, approachable and takes on board comments that are made. Food was good quality, enough variety to ensure always something that you liked. A la Carte dining experience was ok although needs some tweaks. AI drinks were very drinkable, even the wine which is not always the case in other AI inclusive hotels. Cocktails were lovely with generous measures. Rum tasting was very good. A few downside still though. The pool areas were too cramped with the beds very close together and not enough parasols at the lower pool. I am not sure there would be enough beds if all guests chose to use them and as a result, the usual reserving at 630 for favourite spots was a feature. In addition, there is no one spot that gets the sun all day with the sun going off early in the afternoon which was a shame. The rooftop bar for the entertainment needs some tweaks as well, namely, better lighting and reorganisation of the seating. I think this played a part in the fact that so few people went up to see the bands etc. that were on. The most we saw was about 30 people when the hotel was full with 130 guests. Still we enjoyed it all, even the karaoke! All in all, an enjoyable holiday and maybe the people who write negative reviews clearly have unrealistic expectations and should perhaps pay more to go to Sandals!! Read less

Wow, what a great Hotel for the money. We booked with Virgin, so that part was very good. As others have mentioned, this hotel used to be run by SAGA, but it is now under new ownership and has had a total overhaul. The staff were ALL fantastic, could not do enough for you. Example, I asked if they had any honey for my breakfast yogurt. Out it… Read more
Wow, what a great Hotel for the money. Out it comes especially for me. Let me explain, like the rest of the world, St Lucia’s bee population has plummeted, no honey at all in the two supermarkets I looked at in Castries, yet there it was, just for me. Two restaurants, one a la carte, the other buffet style, there is also a daytime snack bar by the upstairs pool for drinks and food, plus afternoon cream teas, sandwiches and cake. At the lower pool there is a self service bar for beer, soft drinks and two slush machines for your own, help yourself, Pina Coladas etc. So, this hotel is not good if you are watching your weight. Our room was spacious with a balcony overlooking the sea. As well as the two swimming pools, there’s a gym, evening entertainment, Rum tasting, eight types I think, can’t quite remember exactly, hic. Wonderful views over Castries and Vigie beach from the open air buffet restaurant. There is a regular FREE shuttle bus to both places as they are about a mile away, downhill. Clientele were mainly over 50 years old, although there were a few youngsters in their 30’s. Great Wi Fi all over the hotel. One thing that does need improving is the hotel’s coffee, not their fault, café culture is new to St Lucia in general, and the locals drink cocoa and Piton beer. The hotel’s general manager, Dean, said they are working on it. You can get Lavazza coffee at the Caribbean Pirates Restaurant and Bar overlooking the Queen Elizabeth II Dock above the jewellers and duty free shops or go to Rituals at Rodney Bay. If you look at Vigie beach, on Google Maps, Satellite view, and think, at the end of the runway, that the airport’s car park is a bit busy, it’s not. It’s a cemetery, and those are the grave stones, so it's dead quiet. Read less

We had an excellent holiday. The hotel is adult only, very clean throughout. The staff friendly, courteous and professional. The food every day offered a good variety and very good quality. The only down side we found with Bel Jou is having to take a shuttle to beaches. But our time at the hotel a quite enjoyable.
