The hotel

Staying here at East Winds you get the feeling you've joined a secretive, but rather wonderful club. Hidden away down a secluded lane, you stay in unique cottage-style rooms, dotted around the 12 acres of attractive, well-tended gardens that open out onto a wonderfully serene beach. Everyone who stays here rates the friendly, attentive staff and the relaxed, welcoming atmosphere. The food is legendary, thanks to the expert chefs, and Champagne is served every night.

If you are looking for clean lines, Scandinavian minimalism in the rooms, white gloved butlers and silver service, look elsewhere. If you are looking for Caribbean charm, spacious and well equipped rooms, a warm welcome and top notch hospitality then you might have just stumbled on the place for you. This was our seventh sojourn at East Winds and each stay compels us to return. For those unfamiliar with East Winds, allow me to try to describe it. The property is a 90 minute taxi transfer through the rain forest from the main international airport. East Winds itself has thirty rooms/cottages, all set in lush gardens on a hillside sloping down to the beach. All accommodation is air conditioned and well equipped with fridge, mini-bar, tv etc. All rooms have been renovated/refurbished to a very high standard in the last couple of years. WiFi, a tiny fly in the ointment previously for some, is now a single integrated system which worked well. The staff at the resort are second to none. Nothing is any bother at all. The restaurant has enough room to accommodate all guests in one sitting, so lunch and dinner can be taken at leisure without any pre-booking of time slots, an annoyance that we have experienced at similarly priced hotels in the Caribbean. Food is really excellent with a buffet breakfast, buffet and bbq lunches and a four course served dinner with three options for each course and a couple of wine options each night(two each for red, white and rose). The wine options change daily. The beach and pool areas have ample sun beds and these are all placed so as to allow you more than enough shade, personal space and privacy. What makes East Winds unique are the staff. From booking to departure and at every point in between all interactions with the resort staff are friendly and faultless. Whether as a returning guest or as a first time guest, all of the staff do their utmost to make you feel welcome, comfortable and happy. All have an uncanny intuition of when to engage with guests and when to allow guests their own time and space. In past reviews I have named staff but that seems a little unfair to those not named as all try equally hard to make guests happy. One mention though, good luck to Roland who started his first week as we were departing. East Winds is our happy place and I think that many guests feel the same. There is an East Winds guest’s silly smile on even the most stern of faces. It is a smile that says “ we’ve found something quite special here, and we’re a little bit chuffed with ourselves”. I don’t like people but at East Winds I find myself chatting away with people that I wouldn’t even consider chatting to outside of the property. This time I even chatted to people from Wales an Scotland, breaking my golden rule of not conversing with the colonials. I am starting to waffle, so I will conclude. Thanks to Judith and all at East Winds, you have something very special and with each visit it becomes even more special. Regards, Simon and Carol Read less

Absolutely loved east winds, its very quiet which suited us, but just be aware its very low key, however the resort is beautiful, The cottage was gorgeous and the pool area. Allthough the beach area is small and not amazing, its calm, and relaxed. The food was also something else and there was a walking trail to see the wildlife etc. I loved it… Read more

This is a small, laid back and welcoming hotel. Little ‘cottages’ set within lush tropical gardens with a lovely central swimming pool and also beach. The staff were genuinely friendly and helpful; special thanks to Julius, Sylvia, Selma, Miriam, Paula and Titus amongst others. We stayed in the Deluxe cottage and the rooms are a reasonable size with a lovely bathroom with sunken shower and Molton Brown toiletries. The yoga area was lovely, but really underused which is a shame, and the gym really needs a rethink. We really like to use the gym and unfortunately the slightly odd selection of wobbly equipment made it a little challenging. The non-motorised water sports were great, and the guys there keen to help everybody get to grips with the various activities available. The food was delicious; from the bbq to buffet lunches, fresh cooked breakfast options to the four course dinners. And the bar was great, it had a lovely atmosphere in the evening. Personally at the low season I would focus pre-dinner activity there rather than the bamboo lounge - just because of the lovely sea breezes in the evening and the view of the sunsets. The evening entertainment was lovely, and added beautifully to the atmosphere. The real measure of a hotel is the service offered when things go awry, as they sometimes do. Issues were dealt with quickly and in the event of the tropical storm the preparation for hotel guests felt efficient and calm. Read less
