Sandals Trip Advisor Just got back from a very nice trip to the St. Lucia Grande. Here’s some notes from the trip and recommendations for Sandals. Long review but hopefully informative. The only complaints are with the food everything else was minor and just recommendations to Sandals to get closer to perfect. No place is perfect. We took this trip to relax and enjoy a seafood culinary experience. Sandals exceeded the first goal totally, we had fun, but they fell far short on the culinary experience. As to cost, it is barely worth the cost. We’d return and recommend the resort, but with a totally different view and would not expect a 5 star level of food. April is the time to go, air temp was low 80’s during the day and 70’s at night. All with a constant 10-20 mph breeze every day. We don’t like blazing tropical heat, so we were in heaven with these temps. Just beautiful in St. Lucia. Water was cool in the sea and in the pool, but loved it. Some may not. Mountains get in the way of a nice sunset or sunrise. Resort seemed only 1/3 to ½ full. May be why our stay didn’t experience the issues others have mentioned. In other reviews. No long lines or crowds. The grounds at Sandals are immaculate, period. Just beautiful. Our room was perfect. Bed, best we ever slept on. Only flaw was the freezer in the little fridge was frozen over. Else the room was perfect. Fridge stocked and kept stocked. A+ Sandals but defrost your refrigerators or buy frost free! Public bath rooms VERY clean, always. People come behind you to ensure cleanliness and the women’s bathroom had a person stay in the bathroom. Reminded me of basic training in the military, these rooms smelled and looked spotless! Very 5 star. The finest feature of the resort is the service. Way beyond expectations. Sit by a pool for up to 15 min and someone will come by and ask if you need anything. Almost embarrassing with bars and food just steps away. We did not have a butler either. 6 star. The largest need for improvement is the culinary side. Most is not gourmet and not 5 star. Most of the main courses were cooked bad and tasted average. Deserts ALL bad out of 8 different ones we tried before skipping them altogether. One star at best. Went there as a foodie and was greatly disappointed. A few dishes were good though, not 100% bad. See summary at end for more detail. Airport at St. Lucia is small and crowded but getting through customs is quick. Few, to no, signs told you how to head to the Sandals greeting area. Go out of the airport though an exit door behind customs that looks like a place you shouldn’t go. Go through double doors and head left and keep walking. Look left and you’ll hit the Sandals reception area. It was warm, stuffy and offered very little amenities. Nice seating though if you get there early. Sandals, need AC in that little welcoming area. Sandals folks nice and welcoming. Soda fountain was timely. Sandals, put some signs up! The trip from the airport to Sandals is as nasty as most say in their reviews. Take a Dramamine, enjoy the view, and try to endure the ride like an amusement park. The bus has A/C which helped a ton. Nothing Sandals can do about this. The 1.5 hour journey isn’t as bad as it sounds but it is long, especially after a long flight. Would consider taking the helicopter next time. Arrival was seamless. Fast and efficient at the Grand. Do the pre check-in the day before, it saved some time. Greeted with a drink and cool towel. Best part was opening the door to your nice cool room. A++ Sandals! Room is clean and comfortable. Sandals, now fix your welcoming center at the airport! Need AC, fresh fruit and other small amenities there. One small issue … the person that took us to the room said you could make dining reservations at the culinary desk. You want to do this asap. Went to desk, after unloading in the room, about 6 pm and found they closed at 5 pm! They opened at 9 am the next morning and we luckily got reservations with no problem. But, that was an arrival day screw up on Sandals. Sandals, keep the culinary desk open a few extra hours for the late arrivals! Train your people to know their times. The manager tried to help us get to the restaurant we wanted but it was full and the other choice closed. Ended up eating at a non reservation restaurant. Not a big deal since we were able to get reservations for the restaurants we wanted the next morning but it could have been a disaster. Be sure to bring your sun screen and any other needs as one bottle of sunblock was 26.00 at the resort. Get your souvenirs at the airport, FAR cheaper than the resort. Come on Sandals, we expect to pay a little more but three times the home cost? That’s gouging. No instructions for the safe, had to ask how to use it. Sandals, provide instructions in a welcome packet, that’s too easy. Only got one room key, Sandals, you only allow couples, provide two keys! TV in room is 1970’s quality but nice large size. Thought we were watching the moon landing and it was the news. Sandals, update your TV’s to at least HD. It’s been around for years. We see you use Samsung, GOOD, get some HD TV’s. There are large low end TV’s that are HD. Or, if you claim to be 5 star, get the UHD TV’s! We aren’t in the room often but will use the TV to get the weather, the local news and lounge just before going to sleep. It matters. Oh, no instructions on the TV either. After digging around learned channel 5 is the channel list. Another annoyance. Come on Sandals, one sheet of paper in a Room packet would cover this stuff at little to no cost but makes a difference. Map of resort fair, but a more detailed, larger, top down map would be better. The glossy one Sandals provides gets you close to where you are going but not there. It’s a cheap fix. We had to ask for directions occasionally as map just isn’t detailed enough. Sandals, improve your map and again, easy fix, create a room packet. The only place open at 6:00 am is the creperie but they don’t make crepes till 11. Sandals, provide a place with real coffee for the early birds. Provide Crepes earlier. Creperie had coffee but it was the mother of all Keurigs. The Americano blend was the closest to our coffee but not good. No expresso anywhere we could find. They say they have the finest coffee in the world, NOT, it was watered down Maxwell house. Was expecting French press type coffee. They did have snacks (dry cakes, plaster cookies, and fruit though. Orange juice great though not from St. Lucia, I learned. All breakfast items were good from the buffet or Toscanini’s. Sandals, the pools are very nice but need floaties. The rings in the ocean are awesome. Noise / Music is reasonable during the day but you can escape to one end of the resort or the other for more privacy and quite. They stop the music about 9 pm so folks can sleep. Good job Sandals! You could go to even 10 pm for the party types. Towels plentiful during the day but the towel racks close about 6. Had to hoard some in the room for any night jacuzzi activity. Sandals, keep your towel stations open till 10 pm Speaking of towels, you’ll need to reserve your chairs or umbrellas early. We placed ours before breakfast, about 07:00 and there were still plenty. Sandals, you need to mark the chairs, umbrellas and tables that are available without cost. Gets confusing what belongs to a Cabana or a private room. The availability of water activities is excellent. Hobi cats are a blast. A short class and you’re on the water. Nice. Great job Sandals! If I had dove any, the price point would have been better but took that into account for this review. There’s an issue here if your spouse doesn’t dive though. Since you can’t go to Sandals solo, if your spouse doesn’t dive, they are left sitting for hours on end. Can’t do that, so could never take full advantage of a full week of diving at this resort unless you went with another couple with a spouse that didn’t dive. And hauling around the scuba gear for a couple dives isn’t worth the effort. Excursions are too expensive (ncluding Spa and such) after paying the cost of a week of stay. The only exception is the park (8.00). It is worth the short walk to the top to see Fort Rodney. View is awesome. Was not bothered by beach vendors if we stayed behind the fence. The night activities are good. We were usually too full and too tired to stay up late to see them but the ones we saw were good. Shuttles are good but, a big but, be sure to get their 15 min early as if you miss one, the next one is two hours later! And, they will leave early! Sandals, you need to have your shuttles leave at the designated time not 10 min early like ours did! We were lucky! No sand volleyball court. Surprising. Sandals, BEACH resort, build a sand volleyball court. Be sure to ask for a menu of drinks at the swim up bar. They don’t post the list we could see. Sandals, post a list! They have a nice menu and a bunch to try. Most not so good in our opinion (tried about 20) but try them all. Pina Colada from a machine? 5 star? Sandals, hunh? On the other hand the bartenders are very good at tailoring your drink. Wife enjoyed Pina Colada’s with no alcohol, extra coconut and cherries rest of week. Peter’s special is very good but only the bartenders at the swim up bar know how to make it. Peters special and Bob Marley are best drinks in our opinion. Try them all though. All the wine was great. Water was perfectly fine to drink. Tasted good and created no stomach issues all week. Been to multiple islands in the Caribbean and this was only island where the water was perfect and experienced no stomach issues. Good job Sandals! So let’s talk about food. Sandals, pay CLOSE attention as these are easy fixes. This in not to dissuade anyone from visiting but constructive criticism for improvement. Some of the food was very good. Best restaurants (the closest to gourmet): Soy and Kimono’s. Be sure you attend these day one if possible. Did not try Bombay or the lunch buffet at Bayside (forgot or would have at least looked). Fish and Chips good at the Pub. Did try all the other restaurants. Jerk Chicken very good and Blackened Snapper good. Crepe’s are good! Coffee is weak, may want to bring some of your own. All deserts we tried at the restaurants we visited are bad. Real bad. Get an extra appetizer and skip desert, most of them were ok. You can tailor the food upon request, wish we would of thought of that earlier in the week. At the end of the week, we were mixing dishes so as not to waste food. Three times we asked for items we saw on the website … specifically, Lobster Thermador, Lobster Sushi roll and a shrimp cocktail. They did not have them at the restaurant! Very, very annoying as we went to St. Lucia expecting some lobster. When we asked, we were told it was a marketing issue that has been wrong for about a year! Didn’t see the prime rib at the restaurant either now that I think of it. Sandals, you need to fix this. Too easy! The internet can update sports scores in seconds, surely you can keep up with a menu!? And that’s not “subjective”. Lasagna very good at Tocanini’s, swordfish ok but still not grilled … seemed griddled. No char marks. Soy is awesome, go there. Not fan of uncooked food but I’d try anything there. Way good! Kimono’s all good. Deserts ok but not great. Entertainment is good too. Portion size was very good at all restaurants. Will give Sandals A+ here, gourmet is typically real small portions. Embarrassing to order 4 main courses but was prepared to (didn’t have to). Dino’s pizza place mid-afternoon, perfect smallish size for lunch. Pizza ok, but nothing to write home about. Domino’s better. The crust is very good. Sauce ok. I realized later, while flying home, all the veggies were very raw, warmed but raw. Their oven must be weak as the crust was great. Would not get again. There are better choices for lunch. Visited Halcyon to try Kelly’s. Bread and butter at all restaurants was good, but not 5 star. Note, the crab cakes they taste great but appear to be frozen. Food was bland except for the crab cakes. The middle was mush versus the typical New England crab cake, but again they were good. Menu says lump? No lumps. Fish came like it was baked (ok taste but was expecting grilled). Chefs, you know you eat with your eye’s first. This fish had a slimy looking coating and no crust. Tasted ok but not 5 start grilled. It was griddled weakly. Be sure to ask how your dinner is to be “grilled”. It was on a flattop (griddle) for every meal we had and gross. Most grilled dishes did not even have a crust from the griddle. The supposed “grill” wasn’t even cast iron or a cast iron ridged cook iron. Grill marks at one restaurant were barely perceivable for the one time they tried. Sandals, use a real GRILL and cook with charcoal, wood or gas over a grate! That’s what we were expecting. I saw gas grills with grates at some of the beach front restaurants not in use! Soft drinks at all restaurants watered down, no carbonation. Had to bring can or bottled drinks from room to dinner for any carbonation. Sandals, simply match your restaurant drinks / carbonation to the bottled drinks in a room. This isn’t subjective either, this is fact. Chefs, taste the two together! Onion Soup was excellent from Bayside, and I would rank it Gourmet. BUT, my wife and I pulled out thyme stems from our soup. Mine was 2 inches long. Gourmet? 5 star? You would be kicked out of culinary school for this sin. No gourmet chef would allow that to happen. (Not a big deal to us really but just saying) The soup was excellent! Real food critics would have blistered you for this. Below is their standard reply on complaints from folks who stay at real Michelin five start gourmet resorts. I have to agree with the other reviewers and beg to differ with Sandals lame reply regarding opinions as … 2 inch thyme sticks in soup is not subjective, it’s fact! Cake that could be used as a dry sponge is not subjective, it’s fact! Cookies and cakes so bland and dry Nabisco cookies would be gourmet, this is not subjective. Flat drinks at every lunch and dinner is not subjective. If this was food on an open buffet, it would be different, we’d understand, but this is desert at what’s being marketed as a 5 star restaurant? Subjective = Fact in these cases. Fix them. Taste is subjective, thyme stems are not. Sandals, do NOT send me your canned reply below or I can guarantee you we will not be back! We will also recommend others never attend a Sandals as the message you are sending is an excuse. Your chefs need some lessons as they are failing in simple culinary tasks. In fact, you need to stop sending that last line period and simply apologize and fix your preparation. We totally understand you are trying to please a mass audience but the problems we are pointing out are bad for all. “We take pride in our culinary accolades and have gone to great lengths to provide our guests with a truly fabulous fare. However, we do realize the difficulty in meeting the culinary expectations of each and every visitor to our resort, as opinions regarding food are subjective in nature.” Read less

For our 37 friends/family, we had the PERFECT wedding, pre-wedding celebration, and honeymoon at Sandals, St. Lucia Grande. The Caribbean Honeymoon One Bedroom Butler Suite worked well to help accommodate our guests staying at La Toc and Halcyon to enjoy the beach and then get ready for dinner in our extra full bathroom in the main room. The Over the Water Bungalow (aka “Heaven is a place on earth”) makes the perfect honeymoon destination as we did not need to leave our picturesque room and dock. We absolutely loved all of our butlers at the Honeymoon Butler Suite – Bailey, Clynns, and Shervan and our butlers at the Over the Water Bungalow – Sue-Ann, Karen, and Keicher. They got us the best seats at all of the restaurants, brought us breakfast in our room every day, drinks and food at the beach, paddleboards and kayaks delivered to our dock at the OWB, snorkel equipment, and made every effort to make our wedding and honeymoon special with sweet decorations and bubble baths. The butler supervisor Kaydi-Ann Spencer routinely checked with us to ensure that all of our needs were met. We cannot thank our on-site wedding coordinator Jenna Samuel enough. She went beyond our expectations with her delivery of my gift bags, creating a guest wedding schedule of activities, overseeing the spiked tea bridal party at the over the water gazebo and our rum and game night, and beautifully decorating each table setting in the ballroom for the welcome celebration dinner. To every couple getting married or retying the knot here – reserve the over the water chapel. There’s nothing like it anywhere. It perfectly fit our group and was so intimate. All of the wedding staff members, especially Raequelle, did a great job with the set up and looking after us and all guests, including tending to an inebriated guest. The resort itself is well maintained by the landscaping crew without any bug issues. The tropical flower bushes make great close up photos, especially around the rondovals flower paths. We had our cocktail hour and reception on the beach under a tent in case of rain, shade, and for night illumination. The aisle runner and bamboo structure added a nice entrance to the reception area. The complementary internet worked well, as our wedding guests could easily communicate through WhatsApp and iMessage. The Red Lane Spa did a wonderful job with my wedding make-up and hair, including perfectly securing and styling my clip-in extensions. The Spa athletic instructor Roma was very encouraging with all skill levels and ages during the complementary group yoga, Zumba, and water aerobics. Our guests used some of their new moves on the wedding reception dance floor. As for the other resort programs, we were impressed. The best snorkeling on the resort is under/near the over the water chapel. The Discover Scuba Diving Resort Program was a great transition to learn how to breath with the scuba equipment and dive at 30 feet. Ron is a great instructor and has a good, economical PADI certification program to be able to dive at 60 feet, including at a dive site at the Pitons. The Resort’s location next to Ft. Rodney is a bonus. As long as you have sneakers, it’s an hour hike to both peaks with gorgeous views of the peninsula. The only negative experience was off-site at the Sandals St Lucia Golf and Country Club at Cap Estate. While we understand the course is under renovation, the 9 available holes are in very poor condition and not well maintained. In addition to the physical layout, the flow of play was quite disorganized without established tee times and one shuttle transporting all potential golfers at the same time. Sandals guests should not be charged extra for the same drinks and food at the clubhouse that are available at the resorts; we even had to pay with cash and could not charge back to the room. Save your money and golf elsewhere until the renovations are complete, which will hopefully be in a few months. Apart from the golf, which is a critique of Sandals and not this resort in particular, all the on-site and off-site activities were a delight and easy to arrange with the on-site staff. The resort manager Filius Laurent checked on us at each of our dinners and events to ensure the best service. We ran into him multiple times as he routinely walked the resort at all times of the day and had a sweet group sendoff for departing guests. This truly was an impeccably run resort. Thank you Sandals St. Lucia Grande for the best two weeks ever! Read less
