This is an excellent property, with absolutely gorgeous views, a nice and fairly secluded beach, and a great pool. Our room, a superior luxury villa, was stunning. The simplistic decor was beautiful and fit perfectly with the sitting. I have very high standards of cleanliness and it met them. The clawfoot tub, walk-in enormous rain shower and outdoor shower were all fantastic. The plunge pool on the veranda was a big plus. It felt enough like we were in the outdoors without going all the way like a Jade Mountain or Ladera. I was very happy we made this choice after visiting Jade and Ladera. The only mosquito bite I got on the whole trip was when eating dinner at Ladera! At Sugar Beach, we only ate at the Great Room, and had snacks from the beach bar, because I read too many negative reviews of the other restaurants. We went off property the rest of the time. We were very happy with the quality of the food at the Great Room, including the wine pairings offered, but the serving sizes at the beach bar were laughably small and absurdly priced. A $15 guacamole serving was smaller than a lime and came with about 6 chips. This brings me to my first complaint, which is the price. Not the price of the room, which is very high but I think rightly so, but the costs of the food once you're on the property. These costs are unlikely to bankrupt someone who has coughed up the cash for the room itself, but they're still extortionate. Charge whatever you want for nice seafood and steak, sure, but you need to have at least some reasonably priced snack foods for people! The second complaint, which is only a complaint because this is a 5 star resort regularly charging me $120 daily for a casual lunch, upwards of $300 for dinner and over $1k for the room, was the service. I hate to be the stereotypical American city dweller here, but this standard of service was far below what I would expect for a 5 star resort. I sat without wine for an entire dinner one night. Twice there were no towels by the pool and if you wanted a towel by the beach, you had to hunt someone down and then wait while they ambled over with the towels (I would have rather just had grab and go towels!). We waited for breakfast room service for over an hour on our last day. People were, however, generally friendly though I also felt like they expected tips, and I didn't experience service that made me really want to tip them (though of course we still did). Complaints aside, we still had an absolutely wonderful time here and none of the above 'faults' were enough to actually impact my enjoyment of this beautiful resort and beautiful island! I would just really like to see either the cost come down or the level of service go up. I am confident that this is the best resort on St Lucia by a mile, which is probably why the price won't go down anytime soon, but they could up the training! Read less

Mix jungle with rainforest, volcanoes, beach, and privacy; you feel like you are in a whole other world! It was truly an exclusive, memorable experience. We reserved a sugar mill room but was upgraded to a villa on arrival. We had our own heated plunge pool, living room, full bath with soaking clawfoot tub, huge shower, king size bed with netting... THE WORKS! Truly exactly all that you could ask for, we got it. And every room comes with full service BUTLERS! They handled our every need. I think the ONLY downfall was the high priced restaurants. Breakfast came free with our package and we made best to eat breakfast each day. We traveled elsewhere for dinner. The Rainforest Spa was hands down the best spa experience I have ever experienced. I wanted to go back JUST to have the spa experience again. It was truly magical and someday, I WILL RETURN! And absolutely recommend to any and everybody who goes to St. Lucia. Read less

My wife and I are frequent travelers that like to stay at luxurious high end properties. This year we chose to vacation at the Sugar Beach Resort in St. Lucia as we were captivated by the luxurious beachfront cottage that was pictured on your hotel website. We were assured that these beachfront cottages were luxurious, private and secluded. Upon our arrival, we were given one of your beachfront cottages but they were nothing as depicted on the website nor as described. They were not secluded nor private and the biggest issue was that the beach next to our cottage had a commercial water taxi stand right in front of it. This made it impossible to relax and enjoy our time on the beach due to the constant flow of people and foot traffic. Not to mention, the horrible gas fumes that polluted the air which made it impossible to breathe fresh air. We escalated this issue to the property management but they were unable to resolve the situation. After constant complaining and no solution given, it was only three days before our departure that we were offered alternate accommodations. At that point, our overall experience and vacation were ruined and we did not want to move. Read less

My husband and I recently visited St. Lucia and stayed at Sugar Beach and absolutely fell in love. Right off the bat I will say we will return, as soon as possible. We did a lot of research leading up to our trip and so it was interesting to also view and talk to others from other resorts. I feel like we made the perfect choice for us and our stay although some of the other resorts were beautiful. First of all the location of Sugar Beach was ideal! Right smack in between the Pitons, with close and easy access to one of the most beautiful beaches in St Lucia. While some of the resorts offer spectacular views, Sugar Beach is up close to the view. Also, all of the 96 rooms (the entire resort covers 130 acres) are individual bungalows with refrigerated air. If you prefer the open air feeling that some other resorts offer, you can easily open all the doors and windows and get the same feel. Personally I love a frosty room to come back to and for a comfortable nights sleep. Our bungalow was about 700 square feet. We had our own pool, patio, outdoor dining area, bedroom separate from the very large bathroom and walk in closet. The room had everything to make us comfortable- full bar, espresso machine, safe and very large bathroom with separate potty room, bathtub and huge double walk-in shower with a side glass door that not only allowed for a beautiful view during your shower but easy access to and from the outdoor pool without tracking water in throughout the room. We also had a private outdoor shower. We also had our own butler to help up book excursions or answer any questions for us. Basically make our stay comfortable. The room was equipped with our own personalized IPad to help us do things like order room service or check out the dinning options easily. They also gave us two small portable phones so we could call our butler from anywhere in the resort in case we needed something like ice and cold Piton beers waiting for us when we came back from the beach. We were on an all-inclusive plan and I read some other reviews and did not have the experience others mentioned. In all dining areas the menus clearly indicated if there were any additional charges not included in our plan and the servers was sure to go over the same when they handed us the menu. There were only one or two items per menu that these charges applied to and it was usually only $10 - $15 US extra. The food in all the restaurants and dining areas, beach included, was amazing. Very, very fresh, delicious and lots of variety. We also found some items changed on a daily basis so the menu never got boring. We loved trying local dishes and fresh fish daily. On Friday they host a “ BBQ” in the restaurant closest to the main beach. We were at first skeptical but we were very impressed. The variety and quality was astounding. It was more of a St Lucian style BBQ with lots of local dishes and fresh fish cooked every which way including the famous “fish fry” style. We spent a fair amount of time on the beach and it was everything and more. The service was terrific, the chairs comfortable, plenty of shade if you need it like me. So accommodating that it was a few days before we decided to snorkel. The equipment if free to use if you stay at the resort. We were amazed that just feet in front of us in the water was this beautiful whole world . Probably the best snorkeling I have ever experienced just off-shore in as little as three feet of water. After we first went in, it was hard to get us out of the water. We did also go to the South Pier beach, which is smaller but nice. They also have a cute dining area on the pier serving small plates of tasty beach side food. To address another comment I read, all beaches in St. Lucia are public. I would never have noticed this at Sugar Beach. There were a few people from other resorts on the beach but very few. If you are a guest at Sugar Beach you have access to the pool, bar, restaurants and most importantly the beach chairs and towels. Everyone else from other resorts must either set up directly on the sand or pay a fee to use the chairs and there is security patrolling at all times to monitor the beach. Sugar Beach’s 96 bungalows are positioned on a sloping hill in order to maintain privacy and give each one a nice view . This “hill “ is not something you want to trek. Even from the beach to the main part of the hotel is a climb but they offer a great shuttle that runs you around everywhere. It was very quick and convenient and we never waited more that 3 minutes for it to pick us up wherever we were. The best part about the shuttles are the drivers! Hi Gilbertie! It was impossible to catch every drivers name, it so happens that Gilbertie really made his name known, but all the drivers were so great. Honestly if I had to say the one thing that stood out for me at Sugar Beach and in St Lucia in general were the people. They are the true star of the show. EVERY SINGLE PERSON we met was warm and friendly and they honestly take such pride in their island. I can not say enough about how much we loved the staff at Sugar Beach and the people of St Lucia. We did venture out to see more of the island. The hotel arranged a driver for us who took us to the mud baths, waterfalls and into the town of Soufriere where we had lunch. The island itself it just breathtaking. We learned that the island is completely self-sufficient . Although they have had lots of British and French governing hands in the past, they are currently their own government. The have their own water source which is natural spring water, they grow all their own produce, supply their own beef, poultry, pork and of course seafood. They even have their own beer- Piton! So they rely heavily on tourist dollars and so I highly recommend visiting other parts of the island. I will say, from Sugar Beach, it is an hour and half drive to Castries where the largest town on St Lucia is located . Even though the island is small it is very mountainous. The roads are very narrow and wind all over the place and they drive on the left so hire a driver if you do venture out. Overall it was a great week and we hated to leave. Cant wait to be back!
