Grand Mirage Just thought I’d post this as I spent so long researching the hotel in this group, other groups and TripAdvisor and just couldn’t get the answers I needed and SO many mixed reviews. So much so that I almost didn’t book the hotel - which would have been a mistake. To be honest, we are very fussy people when it comes to hotels and food so this is a very real review. HOTEL The hotel is so beautiful - yes, it’s tired in certain places, but not even close to the point where it’s horrible. They were constantly fixing, repairing and renovating while we were there and take such pride in the hotel. It feels so grand when you walk through it and the grounds are magnificent. We booked an ocean view suite and got one on the top floor. The room was huge and the view was amazing! Could the room use a renovation, yes. Was it still luxurious, beautiful, spotless and spacious, also yes. The Jakung restaurant on the beach is modern and the position is unparalleled for sundowners or a meal. The pools were beautiful and the swim up bar was a huge hit with the kids. The staff wherever you go in the resort are friendly and can’t do enough for you. Such, lovely, warm people. LOCATION I really struggled with this one from reviews to assess if it’s still within the Nusa Dua secure gated community. It’s not- it’s a 5 minute taxi ride away from it. The hotel is directly on a street opposite local vendors. I preferred being in the gated part of Nusa Dua, but having said that it was very convenient to just cross the road for a massage (we tried a few massage parlors and highly recommend Amigos which is directly opposite the hotel) or to pickup items needed at the shop. While I was researching I was also struggling to make sense of the Grand Mirage vs The Family Paradise. So here it is. They are essentially the same hotel, but they are a 2 minute beach/ street walk away from each other. I didn’t love walking between the 2 at night on the beach as it’s very quiet with no security guards. I also didn’t love walking between the 2 during the day as you walk through vendors on the beach and I felt terrible constantly having to say no - but it may not bother some people. The family paradise hotel is a lot more modern and geared to young families. The pool is fantastic (and packed with screaming splashing children having fun) and has a winding water slide that my kids couldn’t get enough of. There is also a mini waterpark behind the kids club (which I’ll get to later) which is just awesome. There’s also a lovely restaurant (Mahi Mahi) where you can get a superb lunch at or next to the pool. They also have free fairy floss and slush for the kids at the pool. We spent most of our days at the family paradise pool because of our kids, while the pools at the grand mirage had an ‘older’ clientele, with less screaming, splashing kids having fun. We also had breakfast at the family paradise resort twice. It’s not near as big as the grand mirage, but has more than enough variety, great staff and the setting is nice. I’m summary these 2 resorts are run as one resort and you walk inbetween them. The Family paradise resort was exactly that - full of children being loud and having the time of their lives. I personally was very grateful to leave at the end of the swim session to a more ‘placid’ grand mirage experience. But for those who love constant family fun and children everywhere - it’s a great option. THE SPA O wow. It was beautiful. I had a cream bath and a foot massage with Rai (who has magic fingers) outdoors and it was the most relaxing thing ever! Hubby and I also had full body massages which were heavenly. The highlight was the aqua medic pool - something I have never experienced. A must do if in Bali. KIDS CLUB This is located in the family paradise building. We have been to a lot of kids clubs over the years and to be honest this one was a bit disappointing. The staff supervision and interaction with the kids is minimal. The kids are mainly in two rooms on with side of the entrance with closed glass doors (for aircon). The staff mainly stand in the middle and pop their head into the rooms. There was very little interaction between staff and kids ‘playwise’ unless there was a scheduled hourly activity. When I questioned this I was told that if I wanted supervision I would need to hire a nanny. My 4 and 8 year old did not want a nanny, nor have I ever had this required at a kids club before with children over 4 years old. There are really fun play areas for the kids but I found that there were barely any toys for the kids to enjoy. Just some Lego outside and a basket of baby toys in the play area. You do have to pay for a lot of the scheduled activities which I have not experienced before. It’s a minimal charge, but still can’t understand why basic activities such as bracelet making and sand art would need to be charged for. The thing that made me most nervous of the kids club is that there is direct access to the mini waterpark. I was really concerned that with the ‘minimal supervision’ my little ones could sneak past and go there. There is also often not a lifeguard on duty at the waterpark - so this was a worry. They really do need some sort of access control. I also found that the front gate to the kids club was also left open so kids could once again wonder out. I did leave my kids there - but I usually feel secure and don’t think twice about leaving my kids at a kids club and this time there was a slightly uneasy feeling doing it. I really feel that the resort need to look to the likes of the Westin where there is full access control, constant supervision and engagement by kids club staff and an unbelievable selection of toys. Such a beautiful idea to have a movie for the kids some of the nights. However, it’s next to the pool, and once staff told me that it was not fully supervised, that they come and go and a staff member was not always present, I was very hesitant to leave my kids there. Yes, I could have stayed and watched with them, but my visions of holiday selfishly did not involve me sitting on the ground for 2 hours watching Kung Fu Panda. Having said all of this the staff where SO lovely. Wini especially was fabulous and my youngest was crying when she said goodbye. I just don’t think they have the manpower they need there. A lot of the mums there felt the same. FOOD Another point of contention in reviews is whether the all inclusive is worth doing. In summary, unless you are huge eaters and masssive drinkers dollar wise it’s not. It’s such a waste on the kids who live on pizza and chicken fingers. We did it anyway and it was SO much fun trying everything. I would one hundred percent do it again, purely for the fun experience. The food at the resort was SUPERB - like really blady amazing. Not mass produced, all inclusive restaurant food - but quality, delicious food. There are multiple restaurants onsite (our favourite was Jakung) and one can also eat at the 3 restaurants at the family paradise resort. There is a huge variety and you won’t get sick of it. You may however feel sick from over eating because everything is just so damn good. The kids loved it as well, running around everywhere ordering whatever they wanted when they wanted. It’s really more about the experience than the $ value on this one. The cocktails were a bit ‘ok’ mostly. Local spirits used and the mixing of them was a bit hit and miss. We did find our favourites though. Would try stick to the grand mirage bars of yours a cocktail drinker as the barmen appear to be better trained. About 4 times a week they hold outdoor buffets for dinner with local entertainment. So novel and so much fun. Have not experienced anything like that before. Did I mention the food was AMAZING!! 🤣 SUMMARY I’m so glad a didn’t listen to the reviews that said the hotel was old and tired. It’s beautiful (and as a said, we are fussy) and well maintained. Even the ‘tired’ bits are well taken care of. The all inclusive was so much fun and the food was superb throughout the resort. We had the best fun, an incredible family holiday and I would not hesitate going back. Read less
