We stayed 11 nights and loved it - our room was fantastic with a beautiful view, especially at sunrise, and it was great to be able to just hop into the plunge pool and cool off at any time; all the staff were super friendly, even the groundspeople and housekeeping that you'd pass by going from place to place. We opted for the all-inclusive package and loved the choices that gave us: while it didn't cover everything on every menu, we didn't feel the need to spend anything extra during our stay. We also loved the live music on Tuesday and Sunday nights from the acoustic duo at Kabang restaurant on the beach. We came just wanting to relax & chill and Barceló Coconut Island was great for that - many thanks! Some of my other observations: 1. Yes, construction is still going on: reception has temporarily taken over the Kucina restaurant, but the kitchen is still operational and its menu is available at Kabang. The villas below us were also being renovated, so yes, there was the sound of building works and conversation in Thai during the day and a bit into the evening, but we still had a lot of privacy to use our pool and didn't find it too intrusive - frankly the Pakistani crypto conference folks who stayed the weekend in the adjoining villa talking loudly at 2:30 am were much worse 2. Wow, it was hot - we've never been to Thailand before and knew it would be tropical, but talking to some staff it was steamier than normal for them as well. We had the air conditioning going all the time, which made the main bedroom / living area delightfully cool, but the bathroom was always little muggy: not as much as stepping outside where you got instantly sweaty, but noticeably so. The fan only seemed to have 1 speed and was too noisy to leave on overnight and we mostly left it off. It seemed incredible to us that many of the staff were wearing long pants instead of shorts or skirts - hopefully that was their choice and not a mandated uniform rule 3. Bring insect repellant. The staff at Kabang did have some available, but even though the mosquitoes weren't super visible, they really get hold of their prey. It might be a good idea to bring your own treatments as well, like cortisone or itch relieving sprays 4. While Koko is closed, there was plenty to choose from on the menus at Kabang, which was a mix of Italian (from the Kucina menu) to Thai (obivously) with some Indian and Chinese dishes in there as well, and from the Laku beach house, which had more mediterranean finger food type dishes and some nice side dishes. We really enjoyed almost everything we ate, but while all of the staff were super friendly, not all of them seemed comfortable with our Australian-accented English and a couple of times we didn't get quite what we thought we had ordered. They definitely forgot our pizza once, and while that's okay since mistakes happen, it would have been nice for that to have been acknowledged. In the end the most effective strategy was to point to what you wanted on the menu. There also seemed a slight disconnect between Kabang and Laku in that you couldn't order a Laku specific cocktail from Kabang even though it seemed like it would be fine to order that cocktail from Laku and then take it over to Kabang to drink - the two places are not that far away from each other, just on opposite sides of the main pool 5. Staff were more than willing to drive us back & forth to our room in their golf buggies, which was super appreciated while we were still adjusting to the weather; when you get hit with the heat when you step out of your door, you don't really feel like walking the 5 minutes to the restaurant, and frankly the nights were still pretty hot as well. There were a couple of peak times when all of the drivers seemed to be occupied, but by then we'd acclimatised somewhat and didn't mind the walk so much - you got a chance to see the frangipani and the bird of paradise plants and the geckos and the snails and butterflies and a little more of the grounds themselves, which were lovely 6. I read the information flyer they gave us when we arrived, and I don't recall it mentioning some of the things I would have liked to know in advance, like the live music on Tuesdays & Sundays, the Thursday night buffets and fire dancing / fireworks show at Kabang, the availability of room service (not sure if that would have been covered in our package or what menu to order from). It did mention the laundry service, which doesn't cost much and can sometimes take less than the 24 hours mentioned - the 2nd time I used it, I left the laundry bag with reception when we went to breakfast and it was washed & returned that afternoon. 7. Bring your own sunburn treatments. There's a very modest store next to reception that had some sun screens but no such treatments: we ended up buying some aloe vera gel on one of our trips to the mainland 8. As we opted for the all inclusive package, tipping only featured for the spa treatments (which you could add to your room bill) and the fire dancers (who took cash); we would have loved some guidance as to how we could have tipped the serving staff that we found exceptional - thanks in particular to Minny 9. The smoking areas are pretty close to the non-smoking ones and also seemed to have the best seats and views; as non-smokers ourselves, we often chose to sit in those spots anyway and just hope that the table next to us didn't light up or that the wind would take it away from us rather than to us. It worked out mostly We had a fantastic time and it's great to see them investing in the facilities: while it's a little inconvenient, I think it might be one of the reasons why we felt like we got such a great deal, and they've got so much else working really well. Many thanks for helping to make our wedding anniversary special! Read less
