Playa Largo Resort & Spa Autograph

Key Largo, Florida Keys

Virgin rating

The hotel

The first island you’ll hit as you drive through the keys is Key Largo, most famous for it’s watersports with reef snorkelling, diving, and glass bottom boat tours out of John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park as must-do activities. Neighbouring the state park you’ll find Playa Largo set on 14.5 acres of secluded shoreline, providing your own piece of paradise to stay whilst exploring this part of Florida’s famous archipalageo. The private beach is the only thing between you and the sparkling waters of Florida Bay, where you can enjoy a range of watersports right from the hotel as well as venturing out to nearby attractions (of which there are plenty). There is a laid-back feel to the resort, perfectly in keeping with the area, but that doesn’t stop the facilities and service being up to standard. From a beach shack restaurant to a ceviche bar, all tastebuds are catered for, La Marea is a particularly great choice for locally sourced seafood and freshly handmade artisan breads and pizzas. When you’re seeking serenity after all the activity, book in at Ocean Spa where you can try specially formulated scrubs using coffee grounds, sugar, and salt. The top class service doesn’t end when you get to your room, an iPad is on hand to offer on-demand services to ensure your stay is up to scratch.

Getting chairs and enough towels was never a problem. They had s’mores for the kids each night and a beautiful sunset ceremony. All the food we ate was delicious, especially the truffle fries. Service at the pool was great. We stayed in a corner bay front suite, and it was plenty of room for our family of five. The hotel was within a short driving distance of some fun activities with the kids, including Theater of the Sea and snorkeling. Read less

So first off the actual hotel. It’s got some positives and negatives. The reception area, grounds, rooms are all fairly well maintained. The pool is large but on certain days very crowded and tough to get chairs. The beach is VERY narrow. In some places so skinny you have to walk single file and other areas wide enough to fit a few chairs back to back. Some days they didn’t put out beach chairs on 1/3 of the area, not sure why. The pool is either understaffed or just overwhelmed. The first two days we waited, and I’m not being dramatic, 55 minutes for our beer and glass of rose. We were even sitting in the bar area but not at the bar. The food took almost 2 hours, and this was the case for the other tables as well. I could understand the food, the drink wait time was inexcusable. The second drink took just as long and this continued throughout the next two days, we just got used to it and ordered well ahead of when we wanted anything. The last couple of days were better as the pool area was much less busy. The towel service, we are a family of 4 and every morning when we asked for 5 or 6 towels the person would get annoyed and ask (that many for one room?). It got to the point that I almost got into an argument with one of them when I explained, again, that we have 4 people and actually wanted two towels per person. I don’t think that’s unreasonable for a $700 a night property. She had no issues giving 4 towels to the 2 people in front of us. The pool seems to be “heated” but probably around the mid/high 70’s. The bay water is also fairly cool. So my son is obsessed with playing catch, football/tennis balls. When it’s busy there is literally no where on the property especially by the pool/beach to do so. They do have a lawn area but it’s got low hanging lights. Not a huge deal but he was bummed. They do have a basketball court, net for tennis/pickle and bocce ball which we did use. You can self park which is very easy and it’s drive on drive off. The breakfast buffet is decent, honestly less options than a normal buffet but certainly did the job. The gym, small as always in places like this, but again serviceable. The room, a bit smelly and we got a partial bay view. Don’t waste your money… unless you’re out on the balcony and truly looking left towards it, then all you see is the grounds. There was a wedding there on both Friday and Saturday night. The patio doors do little to keep out noise and obviously I understand wanting to party at a wedding, it was just quite loud in the room. We tip the cleaners everyday, always have, one time they left us with half a roll of TP, one day they didn’t clean the toilet, the next day I came back to the room at 4:30 and they had forgot to clean it. I notified them and they came right away to clean it, took the tip and again didn’t clean the toilet, I then walked over to the front desk. Explained our bathroom hadn’t been cleaned in two days and he assured me it would be. Got back from dinner and nothing was done. Just incredibly poor overall service. I heard one woman come into the hallway and ask if they were up there to clean her room since it was never done. The cleaners response was “I don’t know” and she walked away. Again we did have some pleasant encounters, Susie at the front desk was very nice and helped us out when our room the first day wasn’t ready until almost 5pm. She gave us a resort credit, sent us a bottle of wine and charcuterie board the following day. It was quite appreciated. The ice machine on both our floor and the floor below was broken and I never saw anyone working on either of them. They do have a laundry room which is a nice option if you want to do a load. There are iguanas everywhere, no big deal but they jump in the pool, run all around and saw a few fall out of trees. By the way we didn’t see a single bug which I did previously read that a lot of people say they were prevalent. You can’t walk up and down the beach to other areas, just fyi. You can walk from one side of the property to the other which is probably 2-300 yards but that’s it, I’m not used to the keys and normally go for walks/runs on the beach. There is an area that is on the Marriott property but apparently is a 3rd party company, where you can rent kayaks, paddleboards, book small excursions on boats etc. Nice as an option if you want to overpay a bit but don’t want to leave the resort. Truly this is a 2/3 star resort, we won’t be returning here for a variety of reasons but it also wasn’t an awful trip, just mired with many small issues, most of them service oriented. Read less

The property is beautiful and we did get upgraded because my husband is an ambassador with Marriott. The room is fine but the linens and mattresses need to be changed out. Do not expect much cleaning of the room while you stay. The staff and bartender are great but the food is average. They need to clean and replace many of the lounge chairs. We are attempting to work with the event coordinators but this has been a challenge. I had arranged a meeting before we came that did not happen. We were given a tour but are still waiting to receive the information promised. The reviews are all so different I am not sure what to believe and am concerned that things may not go smoothly. I am really hoping it will all works out but am not sure if I am willing to risk it. Read less

My husband and I stayed there the first weekend of February. SO MANY Weddings. We had our wedding last June at the Maui Ritz Carlton. We did not expect others to be disrupted like we were in Key largo. They shut down Sol on a Sunday evening for one. There were multiple weddings at the same time with music blaring. It felt like a cheap hotel in the keys or at a awful amusement park. Only in the keys, there's more fun. We came to relax and get lost but instead it was loud ALL the time, and I know it was loud because I am hard of hearing. I have left two messages for the manager to call me and instead he reported to Marriott that I was whiny about the type of music and that they tried to make me happy but couldn't. I was also told by Marriott that they value weddings more than guests on vacation. Really....you can't make this stuff up. Why would the manager lie? Just call me back! I don't want my points back, I want an apology. Going out of town is so difficult with my special needs daughter. It's not like we can just leave town anytime. Anyway, if you are looking for a beautiful and relaxing getaway. It's not here! Go stay in an Opal Resort further south. We continuously love their resorts. Good things...Despite staff being overworked and running thin for the weddings they were really nice. I felt like they were trying so hard to keep up. The in-room food delivery was nice. The Sandbar had a couple really good bartenders but one on Sunday night kept using the f bomb constantly. This hotel did not feel like it was a Marriott, let alone an Autograph. The beach and location were really nice and that might be the only reason this hotel is saved, however, It felt like I was at a Holiday Inn. Why would the manager lie and report that they called me back when he didn't. That means they are not going to take care of you either. Read less
