Mondrian South Beach

South Beach, Miami

The hotel

There are no rooms! Every guest gets a studio or apartment — the convenience of a residence with the luxury of hotel service. The Mondrian South Beach is a curved piece of Modernist architecture with an interior designed by controversial Marcel Wanders. The style is definitely post Minimalist with a sophisticated colour palette of gold, black and white. With his trademark chandeliers throughout, comfort in the sensual sense is given centre stage inside and out. The pool is set amid sun-soaked lounge pillows, lush gardens hung with hammocks and landscaped into a labyrinthine trail with lounge areas, secret pathways and kissing corners. The setting is straight out of CSI Miami, the silhouette of downtown Miami is behind the expansive blue waters of Biscayne Bay. Because it faces west it also has the sunsets; best watched with a mojito in hand from the bayside bar or private rooftop bar.

Very clean, sanitizing stations everywhere, complementary masks - everything is beautiful! We’re south Florida natives and only come down to Miami if we have to but this is worth it! Definitely recommend

The only good thing I can say about the hotel is that the pool area and event spaces are beautiful. The recent renovation looks great, but that's as far as the good things go. The only good thing I can say about the hotel is that the pool area and event spaces are beautiful. The recent renovation looks great, but that's as far as the good things go. The hotel rooms are notoriously bad and old. Do NOT expect a decent room. Here are the cons: 1. Room was not available at check in. The room we were given was dirty, on the gym/spa floor so no security and the AC was not working properly. The bed was not made and the sheets were piled up on the table. I didn't even want to stay there, but was told the hotel was sold out so I had no choice. 2. The renovations are so new that no one knows how to work anything. A simple request to dim the lights took an engineer and 4 staff for a rehearsal dinner reservation. 3. The service is awful. There are a few good staff but their ability to do their job is hampered by lack of communication and way too many guests, interesting during a pandemic. 4. Expect NO social distancing whatsoever. If this place was in NY it would have been shut down and everyone arrested. Hundreds of people at the pool, not a single mask worn. I could go on, but the point is that this is NOT a luxury destination. If you want a nice pool to share with hundreds of people, it will be pretty but not safe. Honestly, just don't. Read less

Unfortunately the common areas of the property are very nice, but the crowd is rowdy and service is subpar. The concierge never seemed to be available. We had a nice time at the pool, but expect loud guests and music - more of a party atmosphere, would be great for a girls trip or something, but not for us. Rooms were advertised as renovated but clearly had seen better days. Our room was huge, but we could hear every single thing outside the door and ended up switching properties after two nights. Overall the staff is accommodating but do not expect an overly warm welcome. Definitely a hotel for a young, party crowd. Shame because the bay is really beautiful and the pool service was great. I live in New York but came down to Miami a few days ago with my best friend and decided to give the Mondrian a go. We booked a reservation for two days over the weekend and we had a so-so experience. We got there on Friday. The front desk was a little crowded and we had to wait some time for someone to take care of us. After like 20 minutes we checked in and were taken to our room. The room was nice and clean, pretty minimalist but we had a great view of the sunset. Either way, hotel service could be improved on. During our stay, we checked out the Baia Beach Club downstairs and my first impression was "wow, this place looks amazing!" It was a pretty hot day so my friend and I decided to sit on one of the beds on the pool deck to get some sun. This guy came up to us and told us we couldn't sit there because it was reserved. We then sat down at another chair and the same guy told us we couldn't sit there because the area was closed. I didn't get a name but he could definitely work on his manners. He then called the host (Alexandria - who was super sweet by the way!) and she explained the situation to us. Tldr; guests get pool chairs ONLY. I wasn't expecting to have to pay to be able to sit around the pool - the hotel never told us but w/e. Anyway, she was able to get us two chairs near the pool and we ordered some drinks and food. Our server (Andrea) was really nice too! Our food was awesome by the way. We ended up leaving early that day because there was an event going on and it was getting crowded. We ended up going out to explore Miami on Sunday so there's not much to say for that day. All in all, we had a good weekend. We could have been treated better by the staff but we had a good experience so far. Read less
