Royal Palm

South Beach, Miami

The hotel

An inspiring oceanfront beach retreat, the Royal Palm offers modern, vibrant living whilst keeping intact many signature elements of the original Art Deco design. Rooms are gorgeous, with stunning city or ocean views, rich linen robes to relax in and organic bath products. When you’re not out and about sightseeing or strutting your stuff down at the beach, relax by one of the two pools, a cocktail in one hand, a good book in the other. There’s also a state-of-the-art fitness centre and Renew Spa based on Himalayan salt with six treatment rooms. There are restaurants all around you but for good eats look no further than Florida Cookery, the hotel’s signature restaurant for breakfast, lunch and dinner. For cocktails, South Shore is definitely one of the places to be seen.

I booked two nights at the Royal Palm for a business trip and I will not be returning. It started off wonderfully. Claudia at the front desk was wonderful, warm, and inviting. I was feeling good about this stay. But the room was sub-par at best. As you can see from the attached photos, paint was cracked up in the bathroom, the electrical socket in the nightstand was hanging out by the wires, the bathroom mirror was warn, the bathroom sink didn't have a thing to raise and lower the stopper so the water backed up, and the desk was all scratched up. It's hard to get a picture of this, but the closet door swings on a hinge and is warped enough that it catches on the floor. I would have just let this go, but I returned from a long day today and while I set the thermostat to 75, the room was 62. I called the front desk and an engineer came to explain to me that in Miami, there is no heating. I don't understand why the A/C needed to be in "refrigerator mode" though - why can't it just shut off when it's colder than 75? The location is awesome, the beach view is wonderful, the bed is comfortable, and the the people are friendly. Unfortunately, this building need major renovation - I am a little surprised that the Marriott brand would allow a hotel in this condition to be associated with then. Read less

I didn’t like: the extra tall tub that was dangerous to get in and out; the barn door on the bathroom that didn’t close all the way; and our room was not available for check-in until 5:20pm. I liked the close proximity to the beach and the friendly staff.

I decided to write a real review because most of the recent ones seem artificial; I'm focusing on the whole experience rather than calling out one individual: Pluses: Location is great, beach amazing, pool area nice, deco vibe ok. Room good-sized Minuses: We felt taken because the photos of our room type showed a balcony and ocean view. Later we were told that our room category (studio suite) is not available with either. Room made available to us at 3:53pm, just as often happens in a resort area. Asked for it to be cleaned early and "early" that day turned out to be about 4pm. We were given exactly two (not very fluffy) bath towels. As a number of guests have pointed out, there are some mildewy and other smells as you find in older beach resorts. Decent value on the room but WOW on everything else -- $45 for parking (we used the garage around the corner), $60 for one drink and one small dinner at the bar -- $85 for a cabana on a weekday -- not sure what's included in the $33 per day "resort fee" but we got two small water bottles only on arrival as Gold Elite members -- minibar setup is just a hassle and waste of space. We found open bags of cashews in the sensor-activated snack tray. So overall not too bad for a South Beach stay, especially if you really like South Beach, but watch your wallet and don't come with any overblown expectations (like getting your room early, getting it cleaned early, having your room look like the nice photos, etc.) Read less

This hotel has it all from the moment you walk in the friendly staff greets you to help you with your luggage and open the door. The lobby is modern and inviting with a beautiful salt water fish tank. The staff will get you checked in fast and possibly hand you a rum drink! The location is within walking distance to everything or they have a bike to borrow. But you also don’t have to leave the hotel either, you can lay on the beach and they will bring you food and drinks or you can sit at one of the two pools or take a hot tub. Or enjoy a drink at one of the bars. They also have a few restaurants to choose from. The rooms are clean and spacious. Read less
