Royal Palm

South Beach, Miami

The hotel

An inspiring oceanfront beach retreat, the Royal Palm offers modern, vibrant living whilst keeping intact many signature elements of the original Art Deco design. Rooms are gorgeous, with stunning city or ocean views, rich linen robes to relax in and organic bath products. When you’re not out and about sightseeing or strutting your stuff down at the beach, relax by one of the two pools, a cocktail in one hand, a good book in the other. There’s also a state-of-the-art fitness centre and Renew Spa based on Himalayan salt with six treatment rooms. There are restaurants all around you but for good eats look no further than Florida Cookery, the hotel’s signature restaurant for breakfast, lunch and dinner. For cocktails, South Shore is definitely one of the places to be seen.

I stayed here for several nights in Jan 2020 as we had a conference to attend at the Miami Convention Center. Overall, this is an overpriced, underwhelming property. I would not stay here again. The app & website say that there’s a mini fridge but when I asked about it, it appeared that it had to be requested. One was delivered (pretty quickly), but when I opened it, it had a live bug inside and a terrible fishy smell. The room had a sitting bench but no cushion - just Velcro where a cushion was once attached. There was a non-existent balcony (angled so you couldn’t hardly step outside), and I had to get my room keys re-keyed three times as they stopped working. (The mobile key never did work.). I requested extra coffee condiment packets each day but never got any from housekeeping. On my first night, I noticed that a pillow case looked dirty, so I left it on the bed for housekeeping to replace. They took it but never replaced it - I just had a pillow with no case, which I of course didn’t use. The only option for breakfast was the buffet, which was $26 before the automatic 18% service fee. I’m not a big breakfast eater, usually just fruit & yogurt, but there was no option to just order a la carte off of a menu, despite the restaurant’s own website info. I ended up just walking to a nearby Walgreen’s to buy a yogurt & fruit (which I didn’t put into that bad smelling fridge). If you’re a Bonvoy Elite, don’t expect a room upgrade, even if there is availability. My colleague & I checked in at the same time, and while she has no status, she was given an oceanfront king. I got a shabby double room with a view of another hotel, the WiFi code (which was so slow I ended up using my phone as a hotspot) and a drink voucher (which was only good for house drinks). Oh, I did get 2 small bottles of water. So, there’s that. The location was good, and the staff was friendly but not consistently prompt. We were a large group, and I highly doubt our company will choose this hotel again. The overall sentiment was that it was disappointing, especially for the price & mandatory resort/destination fee. The complimentary breakfast was amazing(Get you omelet from Jose Perez). Room was clean and staff was very friendly. My only issue was that the ice machine was broken on 2 different floors. Other than that, its definitely worth the money.
