Cinnamon Dhonveli Maldives

Maldives, Indian Ocean

The hotel

The Cinnamon Dhonveli Maldives takes its name from the Maldivian word for crystal white sand, and it isn’t difficult to see why. Dhonveli is situated on a private island, surrounded by the sparkling turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean. A secluded tropical paradise, the resort combines authentic Maldivian design and décor with modern comforts, facilities and amenities, to offer guests the ultimate Maldivian holiday experience. Why not treat yourself to a stay in an Over Water Suite — resting over the shallow waters surrounding the island, they offer privacy and seclusion. They have a spacious bedroom and a living area with glass panel to watch the marine life below, whilst outside a private sun deck has steps directly down into the water.

30 minutes from Male, this little island provides a nice little getaway. The cottages are world class, with immediate access to the sea from the ample decking. Luxury inside, practical outside. The food was terrible. Ruined the whole stay. Our booking was done through an agent, who only booked bed and breakfast. For a much lesser price, all inclusive was available on booking.com and Expedia. A huge mistake to go thru an agent - can only imagine there must be some dealings going on. Dinner would add over USD 50 per dayif you did not have all inclusive ...... plus drinks! I ordered some milk in my room for a cup of tea and they charged USD 10 !!! The lesson here is don’t go to the Maldives unless you have all inclusive. We tried to upgrade to all inclusive but management held fast on 90USD a day. We offered 70 but no negotiation so we held fast and went basic. They missed out ! Expedia offered the rooms all inclusive for 150. (Something doesnt add up here???) The service was friendly and welcoming, but the stay was ruined by management not willing to negotiate and poor quality food. I have stayed at other islands at lessor prices who offer much better quality. I would not go back here. Read less

We were lucky to complete our stay before lockdown, the whole Island is amazing. We stayed for two weeks in an Overwater Suite and it was everything we expected and more. The Staff are amazing and really friendly. Our Housekeeper was Rahman he kept everything spotless always had a smile on his face and time to talk to you. During the time we were there we noticed lots of changes to make it more environmentally friendly, all of the toiletries were changed from small plastic bottles to refillable ceramic dispensers, the straws were changed to paper and the bar coaster were changed to wood in some of the bars. The Staff in the Sunset Bar and the Rehendhi Bar were always ready with your next drink Ashen, Nimesh, Malinda and Mahesh really seem to enjoy their jobs and it was always service with a smile. Under the Overwater Suites they are growing Coral on metal frames, which is great to see and talking to returning guests of which there were many it seems to be another successful project. We went on the Dolphin excursion which was a very pleasant way to spend a few hours. We also saw lots of dolphins from our deck along with Turtles, Rays, Sharks and many colourful fish. Last thing I must recommend is the Laundry Service to come home with suitcases of freshly washed clothes was amazing and such a reasonable cost. Read less

Myself and my husband spent 10 nights on the island in early March just prior to Lockdown – we were extremely lucky to have been able to make the trip and return safely. From the moment we stepped foot on the island we could feel the stress drain away, this is a trip that we have always wanted to make and were not disappointed. The reception staff were fantastic, welcoming with a cool drink and a cold towel which was well needed having come from the chilly UK into 30+ degree heat (worth noting here to take a change of clothes in your hand luggage if you are able). The check in was quick and efficient and talk about a the island and facilities very informative. We had booked a beach bungalow upon recommendation from our TUI representative who had visited the island several months earlier. Our accommodation wasn’t quite ready and we were informed that we would be upgraded to a water bungalow for the first night which was a lovely surprise. We set off and had a walk around the island as had an hour to wait until we could check into our room stopping along the way at the Sunset Bar for cool beer. We opted for all inclusive which suited us fine, although not huge drinkers it worked out far more cost effective to do it this way (I believe you can upgrade if you particularly want branded drinks). We enjoyed our first night in the water bungalow and were pleased to have had this opportunity to compare the accommodation, the one thing I would say is take reef shoes with you as the entry from the stairs is directly over the reef and you need this protection from cutting your feet (especially at low tide). We took our own snorkel equipment and were awed by the amount of Marine life, particularly the two sea turtles we saw on our first day, just magical – it was however sad to see so much dead coral. We were moved to our beach bungalow on the second morning, I have to say that I am pleased we took the advice and didn’t pay the extra £1k plus for the water bungalow, this was an amazing experience but our bungalow looked directly out over the lagoon, a few feet and you were in the water and this seemed to be a lot larger than the water bungalow. The rooms were always spotlessly clean, fresh towels for the beach were delivered daily and the cleaning staff did a fantastic job. The food was plentiful, delicious and so much choice, you’d be far pushed not to find something you didn’t enjoy. When we first arrived on the island it was very busy, towards the end of our stay and due to Covid19, the island was very quiet although newcomers were still arriving. We met one couple who were due to stay on another island but due this being locked down had been told they would be staying at the Cinnamon Dhonveli. You could see that they were both bitterly disappointed but within 24 hours were both relaxed and happy. The staff bent over backwards to accommodate where they could especially with those coming to the island who hadn’t booked to stay directly. A special mention here to Dileepa (Surf Bar) who looked after us during our stay, he always had a cold drink ready for us and nothing was too much trouble, he is an asset to the island. I could rave on about our stay but safe to say we will be returning to this stunning island again in the future. Read less

We stayed on this island for 10 nights and spent the remainder at a sister island. This island is the prefect place for couples. Our beach bungalow was lovely with amazing sea views. Lovely and clean with everything we needed. As for the food there was a good selection for breakfast, lunch and dinner. You get given a table which is always yours for the duration of your stay. We did a few excursions but would defiantly recommend the turtle boat trip. Wear your life jacket! (It gets really tiring). It did change dates a few times due to wind so I’d recommend booking as soon as you get there. The only negative was abit of work going on behind our room in the staff part of the Island. I appreciate things need to get done but not what you want to hear when laying on the beach. Especially all day. The staff were very apologetic about this situation and are really helpful. Thankyou for the great memories Rhianne & Jack Read less

We stayed here for 5 nights in March and had a wonderful time. We were upgraded to a Water Bungalow which was great, spacious, everything we needed and steps right into the sea where we saw loads of fish, rays and black tip reef sharks. The staff were all wonderful, from the reception staff who greeted us, checked us in and drove us to our rooms to the waiters in the restaurants, the chefs and bar staff. All really helpful and always smiling. Sanjeeva was especially great and no request too small. We did one excursion which was the turtle snorkelling, we had a great time. The reef was beautiful, lots of wonderful fish, crystal clear waters and loads of turtles. We then stopped off on a sand bar on the way back which was equally as stunning. The food was great, lots of variety each day. It never felt like the restaurants were overcrowded. The beach and lagoon was really nice. The lots fish after you take a couple of steps, as you venture further out we saw black tip reef sharks, a turtle and a family of rays. A fantastic trip which has left us with a lifetime of memories. Thank you to all of the staff and especially Sanjeeva who arranged everything for us. We look forward to returning soon! Read less
