Cinnamon Dhonveli Maldives

Maldives, Indian Ocean

The hotel

The Cinnamon Dhonveli Maldives takes its name from the Maldivian word for crystal white sand, and it isn’t difficult to see why. Dhonveli is situated on a private island, surrounded by the sparkling turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean. A secluded tropical paradise, the resort combines authentic Maldivian design and décor with modern comforts, facilities and amenities, to offer guests the ultimate Maldivian holiday experience. Why not treat yourself to a stay in an Over Water Suite — resting over the shallow waters surrounding the island, they offer privacy and seclusion. They have a spacious bedroom and a living area with glass panel to watch the marine life below, whilst outside a private sun deck has steps directly down into the water.

WOW!!! just WOW!!!! We have had the most amazing experience being on holiday at the Dhoneli. I never believe that anything is perfect, there is always room for improvement somewhere but I truly struggled to find anything negative about the place, the food, the accomodation, the staff - all were absolutely fantastic!! Firstly I must mention the staff, every single member of staff we encountered were friendly, polite and very engaging. In particular I must call out Niyaz in the rehendi restaurant, Sattar by the pool bar, Osi for serving us at the pool bar and Zea from reception. All used our names when talking to us and went out of their way to make sure our experience was completely hassle free. Whether knowing what we would like to drink, or where we would like to sit to providing after sun for a seriously stupid english woman (me) who got sunburnt on the first day of snorkelling! Sattar went out of his way to find us to take us to the shark feeding. So much choice in the rehendi restaurant in regards to food meant that the fussiest eater in the world (again me) always had plenty to choose from - a special mention to the chap in the salad room (I'm sorry I didn't get your name) who made me a delicious fresh salad for most lunch times. We stayed in an overwater suite and was just blown away by the accomodation. Huge deck with furniture to lounge on or sit on and steps down to the sea, massive bedroom, lounge and bathroom all with views over the ocean. The island is teeming with wildlife from the tiny hermit crabs (used in the crab racing) to mantas and sharks and even saw turtles next to our accomodation an hour after arriving! All the excursions we went on were well organised - dolphin spotting, scuba diving and snorkelling with turtles were all amazing. Whilst the island is undergoing extensive refurbishment currently it didn't impact on our holiday in any way shape or form and actually meant that most days we literally had the beach to ourselves (apart from a little heron that kept us company). The lagoon has great snorkelling for someone like myself - a first timer, and not too far from shore. In the interest of a balanced review, the only thing I would say is that the ladies toilet door in the rehendi restaurant doesn't close so you have to hold it shut, but that really is the only thing I could comment on that wasn't absolute perfection. I seriously hope that we can afford to go back soon. Read less

I have never been a woman lost for words, ever! But it has taken me an entire week and I still cannot find the words to aptly describe what a mind blowing experience the Maldives has been and more particularly Cinnamon Dhonveli! I thought I understood what brilliant customer service is, I thought I knew what it feels like to be stranded on a paradise island, I thought I knew what bliss was, but today I stand before you to tell you that I was absolutely, unequivocally, unbelievably wrong, until now. We arrived at Cinnamon Dhonveli on a rainy day, we were greeted by one of the kindest woman I have ever met in my entire life (and I’ve met a few). Zea, was on the deck umbrella in hand, helping me out of the boat with the sweetest possible smile. We got to reception and understandably they are under renovation, so reception is a temporary setting, but by the time we took our seats, we were greeted with cold pressed cloths, and refreshingly cold cinnamon tea. We had booked 2 nights on the overwater suites and the rest in a beach facing suite on an all inclusive package. Due to the renovations still in place, it was clear that our second stage of accommodation was not going to be available, so they extended our overwater suite stay for the rest of our holiday, which in itself was lovely and completely unexpected, but for the ‘inconvenience’ they bumped us up to Premium All inclusive. We arrived fairly early in the morning, we had a terrible flight – imagine stuffy conditions with a screaming baby for 15 hours, and then rain all the way through to the hotel, so all we wanted was a shower, that’s it a shower, but we resigned ourselves to the fact that check-in is only at 14h00 and it was just about 09h30 in the morning. In our giddiness of being upgraded, we did not realise that Zea had checked us in, walked us to our room, showed us all the amenities and then advised we’d be receiving some champagne soon and to please relax, enjoy our stay and lunch would be served at 12h30. We were in the room, and only realised she had checked us in. And the ROOM! What a beautiful space, a deck you could dream on, coffee table with the ocean below it – in fact walking around in Cinnamon Dhonveli literally feels like walking on top of an aquarium, you will never be looking for fish, they follow you around, even the baby sharks. And the aesthetic of the room is made for an island, they capitalise on showing you the view as much as they can. You could literally lie in the bath and open your blinds and see the ocean, it was just phenomenal. Not too long after we arrived, we were sitting on the deck and the door bell rang and voila, champagne! It was all uphill from there, the food was just divine, and at one point we were a bit concerned at exactly how good the staff are, because every time my friend said she felt for something, the next night it would be there and I’m sure it was only me she told that she felt for sushi, or hot chips. The island itself is exactly what you would expect from a paradise island in the Maldives, all the right colours of blue! But the true gem of Cinnamon Dhonveli, and the single biggest reason I will return, are the people. They have thee most AMAZING staff! Sattar will make you a head dress, dress your towels and take photos of you all over the island, he will wave and sing hello to you every single time he rides past you on his bicycle, he will take the time to walk with you to the doctor (when you needed more heartburn medication – over 35 eating spicy food and drinking tequila all day has it’s downsides) and he will take you to see the feeding of the sharks, and happily remark that you should jump in first before him. He is so happy it’s infectious. Then we had the lovely Siphon who cleaned our room twice a day, and left us beautiful messages and decorations. All the staff who came out to do the Halloween party, which was just phenomenal! The entertainment was the best, especially when they tolerated our ‘just one more’ screams from the bar after playing several ‘one mores’. Not to mention bingo night, even though we didn’t win we somehow managed to get a free bottle of wine. The crab races and of course our romantic supper on the beach. The men in the restaurant were just phenomenal, Suleiman, the young gentleman with the specs and the salad bar gentleman, we never did get their names but they were so wonderful. I have to give a special mention to our waiter and friend Arushaad, he is by far the funniest, sweetest and professional person we met. He regaled us with such hilarious stories, he will forever be our chicken whisperer. And of course the barmen, Shahadaat and Malinda, what phenomenal people. Malinda made us feel like we had all the time in the world to relax, like the world stopped at the bar and we could just chill. We left there feeling so heartbroken, yes the island is beautiful, and the hotel is gorgeous but it’s the people we didn’t want to leave, Zea, Sattar, Arushaad, Malinda, they all made such a huge impact on us. It was probably an exercise in rekindling my love for the human race, because I have never felt so fulfilled as when I left Cinnamon Dhonveli. Read less

The Choice of the Food in the Restaurants was very good and also the Bar Menu and Choice of Drinks was more than enough. It was very quite there which we enjoyed a lot or let’s say most during our stay. we felt we have the beach only for us! Even if there were constructions ongoing during our stay it didn’t bother us at all and we could barley hear anything. More than that we highly appreciate that because of this we got an free upgrade to premium all inclusive which was amazing and even the Mini Bar was for free and filled up every day!! Thank you so much for that again! We also enjoyed the complementary dinner on the beach aswell as the island hopping and Dolphin Watching (was amazing) excursion! All in all an perfect stay and great service and staff!!! Thanks and we try to come again 😊👍 Read less
