Cinnamon Dhonveli Maldives

Maldives, Indian Ocean

The hotel

The Cinnamon Dhonveli Maldives takes its name from the Maldivian word for crystal white sand, and it isn’t difficult to see why. Dhonveli is situated on a private island, surrounded by the sparkling turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean. A secluded tropical paradise, the resort combines authentic Maldivian design and décor with modern comforts, facilities and amenities, to offer guests the ultimate Maldivian holiday experience. Why not treat yourself to a stay in an Over Water Suite — resting over the shallow waters surrounding the island, they offer privacy and seclusion. They have a spacious bedroom and a living area with glass panel to watch the marine life below, whilst outside a private sun deck has steps directly down into the water.

I just don’t know how to perfectly compliment and describe this memorable stay at the Maldives with the warm hospitality of everybody at Cinnamon Dhonveli. The wonderful and special treatment from everybody went above and beyond my expectations. Special thanks to Chef Akampar, who made us feel so special! Our Romantic Dinner Under the Stars will be unforgettable as well as our delicious Seafood Dinner! Each menu has been specially, deliciously and carefully prepared. He is a phenomenal chef and all his dishes from the buffet are just superb. We are on full board and we go to the buffet 3 meals a day and there’s so many varieties of dishes to choose from and every dish is delicious and every single day he comes out with different menus. I also want to thank Patrice, who is very helpful and accommodating all the time with our requests. With her warm hospitality, she always made you feel at home. It was also nice dancing with Patrice, Sara and Maria at the beach party. I also want to thank Partheeship for keeping us updated with the daily activities as well as keeping our Romantic Dinner so special and organized. Thank you so much Jazlan for being on top of our needs as we come for our meals. The ice, coke and tea is always there when he see us approaching our table already. Tholaal, you did an excellent job in keeping our room so clean and fresh all the time and our supplies especially our drinks always stocked. Thank you so much! Our Balinese massage at the Chavana Spa is so relaxing and rejuvenating and it’s highly recommended to anybody who wants to relax their tired body. I highly recommend staying at Cinnamon Dhonveli Maldives because not only this place is wonderful but the warmth hospitality you will receive is amazing! Read less

Perfect stay in a duplex bungalow, happy not to have booked the water bungalows due to the windy and rough sea, as it wouldn´t be possible to jump into the water directly from the bungalow, but the rest (restaurant, beach, snorkeling) was awesome!

Family friendly with variety EXCELLENT choice for a family holiday in the Maldives! We travelled with our 2-year-old daughter and researched about 15 resorts and kept on coming back to Dhonveli as the best option. Well worth the effort and can highly recommend this resort! You immediately get that holiday feeling when you step foot on the island. Each family/group got their own introduction to the island and it was easy to orientate ourselves. From when we arrived the staff were friendly and helpful. Patrice welcomed us with a big smile and really made us feel welcome. We had originally booked the Sunset Suite but were upgraded to Beach Bungalows. This was unexpected and truly appreciated for many reasons. Since we had 2 rooms the Beach Bungalows were right next to each other allowing our daughter to easily walk between the rooms. The island has lots of trees so there is nice shade when you want it (no need to hide from the sun in your room or a bar). It adds to the island feel, instead of feeling like you on a sand bank. The main beach (on the eastern side of the island) is long and a bit varied. On the northern is one of the sandy beaches with "Dhonveli" swings in the water, with a steeper entry into the water & the livelier side as this is where the beach bar is. I got to know Rafiqul, the beach barman, quite well as this was our default bar for refreshments. I would explain what type of drink I felt like and he would have a good recommendation (the Pineapple Spritzer was our favourite refresher drink). The southern side again has a nice sandy beach but a much smoother entry into the water, which is better suited for small children. In between are many permanent thatched umbrellas with deckchairs, where the entry into the water has shells and old coral. We spent most of our time here as it was closest to our rooms. There is also lots of life at the beach: lots of hermit crabs, some birds, fish (obviously) and fruit bats high in the trees around sunset. We visited in the "off season" (if there is such a thing in the Maldives). There was wind daily BUT the trees and buildings blocked pretty much all of it. So the beach had NO wind and absolutely idyllic. If you went to the Western side of the island, you could cool down in the breeze at the Sunset bar or Pasta Point. Make sure you go snorkelling. There is a reef on the main beach, southern side, where you can walk in and there is sea life about 30-50m from dry land. You can snorkel further out, but we saw the most sea life close by. The rooms were neat, clean and well looked after. There is sufficient cupboard space and tables. The bathroom is large with a walk-in shower and natural ventilation. We stayed in units 401 & 402 that we initially thought may be a bit far from the beach, but you quickly realize that this is perfect with children as you are about 10 meters from the beach and can easily see it. Wi-Fi coverage was good enough on the island. Besides the beach the facility we visited the most was the kids playground. There are the usual slides & swings where we played "Survivor Dhonveli" by making our own course through the playground. This became a daily activity as our seating at the restaurant overlooked the playground. There are also two table tennis tables with some nice music on appropriately sized speakers (you don't really hear the music away from the table tennis tables). We played a bit of tennis. The resort equipment was in good condition, much better that we expected. The restaurant had a theme every night so there is variety in the available dishes. Yashraf was our waiter and would check that our standard drinks order didn't change for the meal. Ash was the friendly face we saw most days as we entered the restaurant and she arranged lunch and dinner for our daughter to be brough to our room earlier than the restaurant serves. This turned out to work out better than expected. Anisa was stationed at one of the hot meal stations and I ended up defaulting to check what she was serving first, as it was usually quite tasty. There were also some bicycles that we were able to use on the island. I made a makeshift seat in the front basket for our daughter and our whole family rode up and down the whole island many times. Another highlight especially for our daughter. The one pedal kept breaking so I got to know the maintenance staff a bit. They were particularly impressed with our makeshift seat and our daughter's enjoyment of the ride. So much that they saw us off with big smiles. We did two excursions: Dolphin watching with Jet ski’s and Snorkelling with turtles. We discussed the options with Jerry who was able to provide some good guidance. I can recommend both. On the dolphin trip we got to see a pod of Spinner dolphins at about a distance of 5-10 meters. Other guests showed me on their videos that they were able to get to within 1-2 meters. Our guide, Hassan, was super chilled and patient as our daughter went along. We ended up bumping into him multiple times afterwards and always had a quick chat. To snorkel with the turtles you are taken with a similar sized boat as what you arrive on and snorkel directly off the boat close at the reef. We saw 3 turtles and I was surprised at how close you can come to them. They don't seem to care that people are watching them and didn't react at all when we got close to them. NOTE: If you are not a strong swimmer, take a life jacket as the boat doesn't have extras. We celebrated our wedding anniversary on the island and a birthday. For each occasion we were congratulated at dinner and presented with a delicious cake! And then on return to the room a beautiful art setting was made on our bed. I happened to see part of it being made by Kawsar and can really appreciate the detail that he put in. Our vacation was during COVID restriction which meant we had to wear masks when entering the restaurant. However, since you spend most of the time outside and a reasonable distance from other people, mask wearing is not mandatory outside of the buildings. There was one person who stood out during our visit as she was friendly, helpful and had a special bond with our daughter...Patrice. If you go to Dhonveli she will be the guest service representative with the biggest smile, who is always friendly (on or off duty) and super helpful (with too many things to mention here). Patrice is the only staff member who our daughter would actively interact with and we still fondly think back of her. Unexpectedly on our departure, she gifted our daughter with a soft toy that has been aptly named "Patricey". Patricey and our daughter have become inseparable at nap times since. We had an amazing vacation, even if we don't usually spend our holiday at a resort. Read less
