The hotel

Infused with the charm of its sugar plantation past, this refined hotel retains its colonial style after a renovation in summer 2017. A member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World, the hotel occupies a delightful setting in the Bel Ombre nature reserve, in a tropical garden through which the Citronniers River flows. Suites are spacious, decorated in 19th-century style but with an impressive range of amenities and a private butler at your service. The Seven Colours Spa is a serene haven, with treatments to harmonise body, mind and energy. There are two lovely pools, with access to an additional pool at C Beach Club, water sports in abundance and a nearby championship golf course. Guests have access to 12 restaurants and eight bars across the Domaine de Bel Ombre — there's a wonderful selection of dining at Heritage Le Telfair, including Annabella’s on the banks of the river with an interactive show-kitchen, and Gin’Ja serving Pan Asian cuisine on the beach. Treat yourself to a meal at Le Chateau de Bel Ombre, an enchanting 19th-century manor house, or head to the trendy lifestyle hotspot, C Beach Club.

The good: Excellent and well presented facilities Fantastic and large room with great bathroom Good range of activities Good range of restaurants with great tasting food Excellent breakfast Excellent staff at reception, the activity centre and bar Great housekeeping staff The bad: Service at breakfast - very hit and miss, didn’t always get offered tea and coffee until a long time into having our breakfast Service at other times in the main restaurant was hit and miss Trying to get hold of snorkelling equipment, a fairly simple request, was a farce The cocktails: prices varied across the resort, the quality was hit and miss, mainly miss Service at the beach was inconsistent, sometimes great, other times poor The Guest Host Service: You get allocated a personal host on arrival who shows you to your room and checks you in which is a nice touch. They’ll book restaurants and activities for you which is great, however we found the communication from our host was a bit lacking. For example, we wanted to eat in each of the restaurants on offer, she went away to book them for us and left a timetable in our room, one restaurant was not listed and we had to ask her the following day what was going on, she explained that it was fully booked but we could go on a reserve list - if we hadn’t have asked we wouldn’t have been told and wouldn’t have gone on the reserve list which eventually lead us to going and having a fantastic meal. I would have expected us to automatically been added to the reserve list and been told. A similar thing happened with a trip we wanted to book which we found out wouldn’t go ahead because of a lack of interest, but again we had to ask. On our host day off, the person covering made the arrangements in front of us which was better. Whilst the hosts also come and find you each day, to contact them you have to call them so have to go to your room to do so, it may be better for the hosts to be available at breakfast especially on the first day so you make all the necessary arrangements with them. Overall Lovely hotel which is a small way away from being perfect. Read less

We had the Gourmet Bliss package which is a must here, we had our own private butler, Yanick, who made our stay very easy and we did not need to worry about anything. All in all the food was superb, standards very high at the whole place and can warmly recommend this for couples and families alike. 5/5 easily!

I love a hotel where you enter up a long drive way, pull up the the hotel lobby and look through to see the resort pool with the stunning beach behind. Straight away you know you have arrived somewhere special. Room : We stayed in the standard garden view room which was overlooking the gardens and the inlet of water which comes in from the ocean. We were on the first floor so had a large covered balcony which was lovely to sit out and enjoy the view. The room was spacious with a large king size bed with choice of pillows, aircon as well as over bed ceiling fan. The bathroom had a nice walk in shower and separate bath tub along with a double vanity. The wardrobe space was plenty and it came with a safe deposit box. Resort: The grounds were beautifully maintained, it was large enough to give you the village feel but without being too big to think that things are too far away to walk to. The beach is long so you can enjoy nice walks along it, although I do recommend wearing flip flops or beach shoes as there is a lot of broken bits of coral on the beach and painful to walk on. Also the ocean crashes far out to sea so the water that comes into the beach area is more like a huge pool which has no waves. It is tidal so at some points there is barely an ankles worth of water and when the tide is fully in it is still rather shallow. The snorkelling was good although there is a very strong current in certain areas so be careful, the coral can catch you if you are not aware of your surroundings as I said certain areas are very shallow. Le Telfair has a very calming feel about it and certainly gets you into a very relaxed zone very quickly, but if you want a slightly more up beat feel you can spend time in the Awali side of the property. There are heated pools as well as cool pools so if the weather isn't scorching hot and you would like a heated pool then that is an option for you which is nice for people that sometimes find pools too cold for them. Food & Drink : The hotel offers a few different meal packages. We chose the gourmet bliss all inclusive package which pretty much covered all food and drink in all of the restaurants except things like lobster, fine wines and champagnes etc, although you could pay a supplement if you wanted them. If you want fine dining then "Le Chateau" is a must. You can get a golf buggy from the hotel reception which will take you on the few minute ride to this tranquil and beautiful restaurant. The food is top class. The pianist was excellent while enjoying the 5 star meal. If you like Asian then Gin'ja is the place for you, serving up amazing sushi, sashimi, dim sum, thai curries etc. It was hard not to be impressed by the quality of food in this restaurant. These were by far the 2 restaurants that stood out for special mentions but all the other options were fantastic, we were never disappointed with the food quality whether it be breakfast, lunch or dinner. I do recommend you make dinner reservations to avoid being disappointed. Every single restaurant was included in the all inclusive package! The one thing I have to say is that the drinks service is a little slow within the restaurants to what I have experienced around the world, but I'm just being a little fussy, it was never ages, just sometimes it seemed to take them a while to make very simple drinks or to even offer you a drink before trying to take your food order. But again this is just being a little fussy and it never effected the experience, after all you are on holiday and relaxing, so whats the rush? Service: All the staff were super friendly and always did exactly what they said they would do very promptly. Check in was done in room which was a nice touch and we were given our own private concierge Ashniii who deserves a special mention as she went the extra mile for us, arranging rose petal baths, anniversary cakes, birthday cakes and also arranging for me to see inside some of their premium suites which I always like to see for future stays. So thank you very much Ashniii. I have to also mention it is a golfers paradise. The par 72 championship golf course is included in the all inclusive package, and that is green fees as well as buggies and you do not need a caddy, so if you bring your own clubs then you will be in heaven!! If you are staying in the south west area of Mauritius then I can't believe you will find a better option!! Read less

Our holidays were just perfect thanks to the smile and availability of everyone and in particular the kindness of Marjorie and Ashni. Thank you girls 🤩 The room was large enough and well equipped with a beautiful view on the swimming pool area, the beach and the lagoon. The restaurants offer a variety of dishes and menus which are a delight. There are activities enough to complete your stay and the possibility to book a taxi or to rent a car directly from the hotel to have some outside experience. So if you have any hesitation, just run, it is more than worth a try!!! Read less
