LUX* Le Morne

Mauritius, Indian Ocean

The hotel

With a stunning sunset location, flanked by UNESCO World Heritage Site Le Morne Peak, this LUX* resort also overlooks an endless stretch of golden beach. Sheltered from trade winds and on the quiet side of the island, it’s an ideal place to catch up on some R&R. Landscaped gardens surround you, dotted with five swimming pools — select your favourite and pull up a lounger. Romantic in feel, the hotel is also ideal for families, with a superb kids' club offering activities such as treasure hunts, art classes and tennis lessons. Water sports abound, try your hand at snorkelling, water-skiing or kite-surfing perhaps. If you prefer dry land, no worries — team up with friends for a game of volleyball or hire a bike to explore the lush interior. Come sundown, the pace picks up slightly. Head to The Bar for cocktails and live music, or while away the hours in East, feasting on delicious Thai cuisine. Set right beside the ocean, The Beach is also highly recommended, serving up Italian fare in a relaxed setting.

LUX Le Morne is set on the south west coastline of Mauritius, on Le Morne Beach - and it’s absolutely stunning. We had a beach-facing villa, which came fully equipped with everything we could need (hairdryers, shampoo / conditioner, comfortable bed etc). The room also had both an indoor and outdoor shower and an open plan bathroom and bedroom (which could be closed off using shutters if needed), which gave the room a spacious feel. Each villa has a private garden area too for drying clothes and relaxing on sun loungers. The food was incredible, I particularly loved the breakfast buffet which catered for all tastes and dietary requirements (lots of Gluten Free bread/pastry options and alternatives to milk), plus the food was just good quality. My favourite part, though, was the attention to detail. I liked that we were given a little drawstring wet bag on our final day so we could still use the spa, beach and pool facilities after checking out, that they hold a once-a-week cocktail party with all the managers so guests can raise questions or issues, and that they ask for dietary requirements on arrival so that they are aware of everything from the start. The dark wood interior of the hotel is lovely and gives a very relaxed but upmarket feel. The spa is wonderfully tranquil and the massages are done well and worth the $. The views are beautiful. This is lovely place to spend a peaceful break. Highly recommend trying out the sea urchin tasting on the beach with Stephanie and checking out the plastic work shop where anyone can get involved in creating designs out of used plastic. Extras wise - avoid the third-party operator swim with dolphin tour as it’s not organised well around wildlife welfare - and there is a lot of chasing and crowding of the dolphins with 15+ boats (very unnerving and the dolphins don’t stick around), however the water sports (paddle boarding, snorkelling, diving etc) are brilliant. This was our 4th trip to this resort but the last 3 trips were prior to 2009 when it operated under a different brand name. We had such wonderful memories of our previous trips that when it came to my 60th, I felt it was time to revisit and experience the “Lux” brand....and I was not disappointed! The resort occupies an amazing location by Le Morne mountain with crystal clear waters and a golden beach.....if you dream of snorkelling a few feet from the beach and being surrounded by fish then this is the place for you. Invest in a snorkelling mask to see the richness of the marine life right on the hotel beach....(the beach hut won’t lend it unless you go on their snorkelling trips). Arrival was smooth and nice small surprises....they have recently introduced a new App...didn’t work for me but it really didn’t matter. Nice of the GM to come and greet us. We had their basic room “superior”....small functional/clean but uninspiring and seriously needing an upgrade ...wifi in the room worked very well, but not on the beach throughout the 10 days, - in the current age, that’s not great. We came in March....weather forecast was thunderstorms everyday, we needn’t have worried....the resort being sheltered has its own micro climate! We did not lose a single day to rain. The resort has changed quite a bit for the better with a couple of additional pools, ice cream shack....amazing (try the charcoal coconut flavour it was out of the world!) and a new restaurant - Thai. This resort not just met my expectations but truly exceeded them and my 60th will remain a very happy memory! The Lux team from the restaurant, boat house to the beachside & housekeeping operate as team and they are here to make our stay special.....I am of Indian origin & so I need to set up my day with a cup of masala chai every morning....and once I explained what I wanted, I was not disappointed. Hurvind, the resort manager for food ensured on a daily basis that my wife’s special requirements were met....we therefore loved all the restaurants - the Kitchen had theme buffets generally very good. It is also where we had breakfast....also good with plenty of stations. The Beach serves ala carte options & lots of veggie options also very good - Thai was spicy and exquisitely presented....do tell them in advance if you want it toned down....the chef will accommodate. The views of the sunset are stunning. We used the spa a couple of times....quality of treatments & ambiance was first class. One thing to note - this is one of the places where guests stick their towels to reserve the places by the beach as early as 8am....very uncool....so, and regrettably you may want to join the crowd & demean yourself... its the price for having a great day! We went swimming with the dolphins, booked via the boathouse- MRU 2,000 p.p. - this will remain one of the best memories in my life - a must do if you are planning to come here....Yohan & Rueben (the crew) were really fantastic. I also took the trouble to talk to the groundsman, housemaid....all said the enjoyed working for Lux....a happy group of people who all go out of their way to make your stay a memorable one.....I for one cannot wait to return....those of you reading this review, I hope you equally have a great time if you visit this resort. Its hard to remember everyone by name...so many who contributed to a great stay.....perhaps I can mention Dylan by the Ilot Pool..he always went out of his way to help & the lady who served us ice creams & Priscilla in the Kitchen. For sheer warmth & authenticity of the team, I rate this as one of the top 3 resorts I have ever experienced. With a bit of capital investment & upgrade, this would easily stretch at the very top of 5* resorts. Read less

I cannot recommend this place highly enough! The staff and service are top! The resort enjoys some stunning sea views ideal for sunset hour, the resort is very elegantly integrated with nature, the facilities are of top quality and comfort and the levels of service and hospitality are second to none. We chose this place for our honeymoon and I truly wouldn’t have changed it for the world. We were made to feel like king and queen during our stay. I was incredibly surprised by how much attention staff pay to the guests as they knew us by name and even remembered things about us like that we’d go out for the day or we’d do particular activities another day! Considering how many faces they see each day I surely wasn’t expecting that! Their hospitality, friendliness, warmth, politeness and keenness to go the extra mile made us feel truly special! Mauritius, Lux Le Morne and all the staff now have a place in our hearts and we’re already looking forward to going back! Many thanks from the bottom of our hearts! Read less
