LUX* Le Morne

Mauritius, Indian Ocean

The hotel

With a stunning sunset location, flanked by UNESCO World Heritage Site Le Morne Peak, this LUX* resort also overlooks an endless stretch of golden beach. Sheltered from trade winds and on the quiet side of the island, it’s an ideal place to catch up on some R&R. Landscaped gardens surround you, dotted with five swimming pools — select your favourite and pull up a lounger. Romantic in feel, the hotel is also ideal for families, with a superb kids' club offering activities such as treasure hunts, art classes and tennis lessons. Water sports abound, try your hand at snorkelling, water-skiing or kite-surfing perhaps. If you prefer dry land, no worries — team up with friends for a game of volleyball or hire a bike to explore the lush interior. Come sundown, the pace picks up slightly. Head to The Bar for cocktails and live music, or while away the hours in East, feasting on delicious Thai cuisine. Set right beside the ocean, The Beach is also highly recommended, serving up Italian fare in a relaxed setting.

This is a nice hotel but is not a 5* luxury experience. We had a number of issues during our stay including (1) We paid for a room upgrade in advance but were given a room that was much smaller than indicated on the hotel website. We were given a larger room after complaining but it shouldn't have come to that. (2) Booking excursions/activities is very hard work! Reception could not help us book diving, snorkeling or other excursions. It then took 4 hours to book excursions on the day we arrived. Also, despite booking and paying for some excursions in advance there was no record of this. (3) The food is OK but you would expect better for this price. Being charged £90 for for a 40 minute buffet dinner on the day we departed was the final straw. It also took more than 2 hours to serve only a starter and main course one evening in the beach restaurant! (4) Our room was rarely cleaned before 1800 each day and often was not fully restocked. I see plenty of 5* reviews here but just can't match that against our experience. When you charge 5* prices the expectation is that a 5* service is delivered. Unfortunately for us it was not. He shared a homemade cocktail that he prepared himself and was just sublime, Amazing experience and by far the best. Read less

We stayed at Lux Le Morne during the last week of September and into early October. We chose the resort having previously stayed at Lux Grand Gaube in 2018 (which was brilliant) so we had very high expectations of the Lux brand! Pleased to say that Lux Le Morne delivered on every front. We were one of the lucky few guests who stayed during the final week of September before the island's reopening on 1st October, so the resort was only occupied by a handful of couples and was totally serene. We were upgraded to a junior ocean suite which had a spacious porch facing the beach and outdoor shower. The beach itself is a total snorkelling hotspot - so much sea life to see so close to the shore - triggerfish, catfish, etc. That said, there's are sea urchins and the beach does have shells/coral pieces, so I would recommend bringing water shoes. The food at the two restaurants - East and The Beach was fantastic. We enjoyed every single dish we ate. The presentation and creativity of the dishes prepared by Vishal (Executive Sous Chef at Lux Le Morne) and his team is Michelin star-esque! Huge thank you to Chef Vishal and Chef Rajesh who went to great lengths to cater for my partner's severe gluten allergy by modifying all dishes where needed, preparing bespoke meals and preparing everything totally separately and in an allergen-friendly way. We also wanted to give a special shout out to Rodee who we became friends with and who really stood out, went above and beyond in every way and who runs an incredible evening at East restaurant - he has a true passion for what he does and it shows. On many occasions we trusted Rodee to put together a menu choice for us and were surprised with many special dishes! In terms of activities, there is so much to do in Le Morne. The hike of Le Morne Brabant (although not for the faint hearted) gives you spectacular views over the lagoon and surrounding villages. The spa has an amazing couples massage session where you can book out a private jacuzzi with bubbles - for me it was the best massage I'd ever had. We'd also recommend taking a boat trip with Skipper Dan who took us swimming with dolphins (where we saw 40+ wild dolphins and swam with them within touching distance) and fishing where we caught a large yellowfin tuna. Dan operates on Lux Le Morne beach but he's not affiliated with the hotel; he is also able to cook your catch for you on the beach at Coconut Island (which is a small uninhabited island nearby) - seafood doesn't get more fresh than that! It was genuinely one of the highlights of our trip and we really recommend booking any such trip with Skipper Dan! Obviously I can't forget to mention the free watersports on offer via the boathouse (kayaking, paddleboarding, water skiing, snorkelling, glass bottom boat trips) operated by the brilliant watersports guys, headed by Lionel. Please also download the Lux app when you come because the hotel have tonnes of activities to sign up to on there - yoga, bike rides, nature walks - theres just so much to do! Above all, what keeps us coming back to Lux hotels is the amazing service - nothing is ever too much trouble for the staff. In addition to Vishal, Rodee and Rajesh, we want to thank the following staff members who made our stay special: - Vedita at the spa who set up the most amazing couples massage and seamlessly ironed out a small booking-confirmation related hiccup at last minute re our booking; - Sawmy and Bridget who did an amazing job during our special dinners; - Stephanie - who always came to say hello to us around the resort and the sports guys; - Xavier who was so helpful in setting up events for us ahead of our stay and was always a joy to see around the resort; - Vik, who we unfortunately never got the chance to catch sea urchins with (as we had so much on) but he always showed me his catches and so greeted us around the resort. LUX* Le Morne is truly exceptional. Thank you again to the AMAZING team for an unforgettable holiday! Read less
