Solana Beach Mauritius

Mauritius, Indian Ocean

The hotel

Waiting for your drinks to arrive as you laze on white sands, shaded by a coconut palm. Taking a dip in a lagoon pool among tropical plants and dining and drinking terraces. Stepping out on your balcony to soak in endless sea views before heading out for dinner. This may be the stuff of daydreams, but it’s the true island experience guests come to enjoy when staying at the adults-only Solana Beach. It does deliver a delicious cliché, but this hotel also comes with its own unique twists, like the nod to the sixties and seventies in your spacious guestroom, which is otherwise thoroughly modern. It also gives you the option to do absolutely nothing – or to pack your days with cycling, diving, snorkelling, and even complimentary glass-bottom boat trips, and your nights with island entertainment and meals in three delectable restaurants.

Stunning beach side setting, an extensive hotel built in low level blocks and nearly all rooms having a sea view on to the crystal clear ocean. (Note: This is an adults only hotel). The rooms were tasteful, but were in need of some TLC, looking a little tired in places and in need of a deep clean regime, that however was my only criticism. The staff were wonderful, couldn't do enough for you, the food was very good (buffet style) but getting fresh fish and omelettes for example was also available. Other ala carte type restaurants were also available but not sampled. Entertainment in the evening was very good, some locals doing traditional dancing, and music/disco was well attended and enjoyed. Pool is a good size and was relatively warm, but the sea was likely warmer, very calm as it is a protected beach by the reef much further out to sea. The sand is crushed coral and significantly rough on the feet, water shoes are strongly recommended. If you would like a quieter room we found those with a room number starting with a "4" would be furthest away from the evening entertainment, however it is then a 500 metre walk to the restaurant through the beautiful gardens. Some walks along the beach in either direction are possible however due to the Covid19 situation exploding whilst there unfortunately I did not venture very far outside of the hotel complex. After only 5 days I was informed the hotel was closing at the end of the week due to Covid19 and that I was being transferred to their sister hotel nearer to the airport. We visited march 2020. After reading all the great reviews we were really excited to get there. Staff were friendly. However it left a bitter taste. Our first room was infested with hundreds of ants. We changed rooms. The second room was damp and the shower would flood the whole room. We also had a leak from the roof which they tried to fix about 3 times but couldn't. The housekeeping threw away my partner's contact lenses (not standard ones). Meaning we had to pay for a taxi to town and to buy expensive replacements. Eventually we got the staff to cover the cost. We had a near death experience. When the incorrectly labelled food has seafood buried inside (I have anaphylaxis to this). This happened twice! Staff kept trying to send me replacement food for the next 2 days which made no sense. They refused to refund the cost of the food which tried to kill me. Rooms aren't clean at all. Sun beds are filthy. All inclusive upgrade with a "promotion" on arrival from half board cost us over £900 for 2 adults. It's expensive in the hotel for drinks and food otherwise . 140 rupees for one soft drink. Whereas in port Louis it is only 40 rupee in a coffee shop. Would I return? No I wouldn't. Would I recommend? Definitely not Read less

There were more disappointments than pleasant experiences while staying at Solana. Our first day, we noticed that while showering water would pour out from underneath the doors onto the bathroom floor. When we brought the issue to the attention of front desk staff their first response was “do you want more towels?” well no... Id like the problem fixed so I dont have to walk through water on my way to the toilet. They said a maintenance man would come and never did. The sun loungers along the beach were extremely worn out and dirty. The cushions definitely need a refresh. While ordering some food at the bar, we waited for over an hour to be told something went wrong, they did not have our order and couldnt remember us placing one- so we had to order again a second time and we were ravenous. At checkout the staff insisted we needed to pay an extra 400+ dollars because when we booked through booking.com they ‘did not charge us the right price’. We argued the booking said paid in full, and it wasnt until we provided a copy (again) of the booking did she make up some excuse about currency rates and euro vs rupee etc. Plus the bill for our drinks that we paid for at the end was rounded up by 300 rupees and we only noticed because we added up the items ourselves. Very dodgy. The good parts were sections of the beach were lovely for swimming, the buffet food was 4/5, and the pool while looking slightly old was very clean and quite large. All in all way too much for the quality. Read less
