Solana Beach Mauritius

Mauritius, Indian Ocean

The hotel

Waiting for your drinks to arrive as you laze on white sands, shaded by a coconut palm. Taking a dip in a lagoon pool among tropical plants and dining and drinking terraces. Stepping out on your balcony to soak in endless sea views before heading out for dinner. This may be the stuff of daydreams, but it’s the true island experience guests come to enjoy when staying at the adults-only Solana Beach. It does deliver a delicious cliché, but this hotel also comes with its own unique twists, like the nod to the sixties and seventies in your spacious guestroom, which is otherwise thoroughly modern. It also gives you the option to do absolutely nothing – or to pack your days with cycling, diving, snorkelling, and even complimentary glass-bottom boat trips, and your nights with island entertainment and meals in three delectable restaurants.

My wife and I went to stay at Solana for our Honeymoon. We were plagued by problems from day one. One day one our electricity was off from the moment we woke up. After telling them about it twice it only got looked at later the afternoon. We weren't given a duvet blanket. I had asked four times with no results. I had to ask our travel agent to step in and ask. We got one on day 3. I kindly asked for us to be moved to a room with a better view of the ocean as we had half our view obstructed by a building. We were moved two days later to a room with a fridge and plug that didnt work. We did tell them about it but it never got fixed in the 8 days following. The cleaning staff was friendly. Only some of the waiters were friendly. The rum bar-man was great. The front desk was terrible and not helpful at all and most of the time we were there there was no one to be found. We were given a "free" honeymoon candle light dinner only to pay 2000 rupees for a seaview table setup and 1400 rupees for a bottle of wine. The candle light dinner was plagued by mosquitoes, mice, lizards and spiders. The food was great, but we were still hungry afterwards and ended up at the nights buffet after the three course dinner. The night time entertainment was nice now and then, but it became very loud when we had a long day and wanted to sleep around 11am. Then it's like sleeping directly next to a nightclub. Overall it felt like all the hotel cared about was making money and not necessarily helping the visitors feel relaxed. Drink and food were a bit overpriced. I do think it would help if they make bottled water free at dinner buffets as there doesnt seem to be any other free options for drinking fluids and tap water is advised against. All drinks are quite more expensive than the local store prices. We had to buy at the local superstore for a third of the price and drink water/beverages in our room with a fridge that didn't work.Oh and for a honeymoon room, pushing two single beds together doesnt fit a four star hotel. Seriously. I was dealing with back pain due to uncomfortable sleeping our whole trip through. Other than that, the view and food was great. Some beach activities that were great. Everything outside of Solana was fantastic. Really enjoyed Mauritius, but Solana took away from it being perfect. I would absolutely rather put it in a two star hotel category. For an expensive hotel it wasn't worth the money. Please think hard before you choose Solana Read less

Arrived 21st and only yesterday (23rd) was dry, otherwise torrential rain and cyclone on its way. Sitting on the balcony and can’t hear myself think, let alone talk to my partner, due to corrugated metal roof over lovely large balcony with sea view. ☔️⛈. One couple still sitting on their loungers reading under thatched sun shade!! Apart from weather, very nice hotel, gardens, foods, staff all good. Reviews generally accurate except for poorly rated ones - can’t understand it. Beach shallow but long and water is shallow too for quite a long way out protected by a coral reef so is calm even in the heavy rain. Rainy/cyclone season this month so be prepared to avoid disappointment. Quiet hotel with not much around and about except one Chinese restaurant, one Indian restaurant and gift shop next door. Belle Mar worth a visit for the lovely public beach but nothing much more. Taxi to Centre de Flaq worth a visit if bored or to stock up with water, soft drinks, munchies if you are on half board and usual souvenir shops. AI only seems worth it if you can eat and drink that much having had a good breakfast. Upgrade from half board is 50 euros per person per day - that’s for drinks and lunch. Couple sitting on loungers gone in now. Read less
