Solana Beach Mauritius

Mauritius, Indian Ocean

The hotel

Waiting for your drinks to arrive as you laze on white sands, shaded by a coconut palm. Taking a dip in a lagoon pool among tropical plants and dining and drinking terraces. Stepping out on your balcony to soak in endless sea views before heading out for dinner. This may be the stuff of daydreams, but it’s the true island experience guests come to enjoy when staying at the adults-only Solana Beach. It does deliver a delicious cliché, but this hotel also comes with its own unique twists, like the nod to the sixties and seventies in your spacious guestroom, which is otherwise thoroughly modern. It also gives you the option to do absolutely nothing – or to pack your days with cycling, diving, snorkelling, and even complimentary glass-bottom boat trips, and your nights with island entertainment and meals in three delectable restaurants.

Arrived after a long flight, sat in reception quite a while even though we were the only guests that had arrived. Receptionist eventually took us to our room and gave us a small map to find our own way round and said bags would be up in a couple of minutes, an hour later we had to ring to ask for the bags, they said they had forgotten to bring them! Room ok. Went for a walk on the beach, took our flip flops off to walk along the edge of the sand but after a few seconds we had to put them back on as our feet were getting cut to bits with the lots of dead coral that was all over the beach. The beach isn’t very wide. The sun beds are perched on a bit of the beach that is higher than the rest, sunbed mattresses were beige but covered in black dirt, so never used them. Hubby loves snorkelling but very little to see, he was very disappointed. Food was repetitive in the main restaurant. Cocktails didn’t seem to have any alcohol in and had to ask for a separate rum to add to it. A couple of staff were nice and friendly but not all. The service was inconsistent. If management were present staff came to the pool/table and asked if you would like a drink, once management left you had to go up and get your own (not that we minded going up) whilst staff chatted at the bar. You can see that management are trying to better the hotel but have to be consistent. There are a lot of Mauritians that spend the day at the hotel and sometimes it can get loud and the music blaring to satisfy these guests. Unfortunately whilst laying round the pool relaxing doesn’t happen with the blaring music. I would like to mention one member of staff who stood out from the rest, Kesh, lovely lad and the hotel are very lucky to have such a fab member of staff. Maybe the others could take a leaf out of his book and things would be better. We wouldn’t go back to Solano Beach as we felt disappointed with our choice once we got there. All the fab reviews apart from one that we read had made us decide to go but the one bad review unfortunately was telling the truth. Read less

I found new hotel and checked out as quick as possible. This hotel had numerous failings ripped sheets worn out towels ,does not meet expectation of four star hotel.!! Read less

I'm afraid things started badly here. Eighteen of us had travelled out as a group with a well-known UK Operator, having stayed in two excellent hotels on the island prior to staying here for the rest of the trip. We were shown to a grubby area, used as a small eating area in the evening. The area is open, and naturally birds fly around. Unfortunately, any bird mess on tables is not wiped off. It was totally baked on, and when I pointed this out, someone came with a cloth to wipe it off. This did not work. Later on, cloths were laid for people eating there. I pointed this out to our Tour Rep, and spoke to Sunny, the Manager on Duty, and said if they presented this area to guests like this, what was the standard of hygiene in the kitchen? I also spoke to Guest Relations. The room had had some cleaning the next day. More would not have gone amiss. A root and branch major effort is needed here. This review is for Management to action. The food at the buffet was good. We found the drinks extremely expensive, particularly the wine. We landed up drinking filtered water for dinner at 80 rupees a bottle. A decent bottle of wine was about 800 rupees. Other minor irritations -the bathroom and toilet had very bad lighting and you struggled to see. Apart from this, the staff were very friendly and the facilities were very good. Read less
