I don’t know where to start on my review because I am for once in my life speechless at how incredible our stay at Sugar Beach Hotel was. I always knew I wanted to stay on the West coast of the island as I just love a sunset, and was torn between booking La Pirogue and Sugar Beach. The best thing about this predicament is that you can have access to both hotels and it feels like one big hotel. The difference being that your room is on a different site but you can walk between them freely. From check in we were shown to our Premium sea view room. I was hoping for a small upgrade as I was staying as a Travel agent and we were celebrating two 40th Birthdays as well as our sons birthday. But this didn’t happen due to occupancy that week. Unfortunately, even though the second week the hotel was only half full our request was forgotten about. BUT this was not an issue as we had a wonderful room which was directly across a green area with the sea just in front of us. It’s not just the beautiful grounds but the staff make this hotel super special, their attention to detail in making sure we felt at home and looked after was just so lovely. I can’t possibly name everyone but I want to give special mentions to staff that I will remember for a long time. Every morning I tried to visit the fitness centre where I was greeted with Satyan (I hope I have this right) and I really enjoyed the classes put on by Isabel and Pamela. Their energy at 7am was great to get you in a super mood for the day! I was also fortunate to take part in Pilates on the Jetty at La Pirogue and Yoga which is outdoors on the green at Sugar Beach. Diana helped looked after our needs when it came to celebrating the birthdays and helped make my husbands birthday morning memorable with cakes, balloons and bubbles, even though we were due to fly home later that day. Faze and Luka looked after us by the pool as well as all of the guys who worked to keep us well watered and catered for. Faze would remember our order and room number, which made us feel special. Most days if we were staying on site for lunch, we went to La Pirogue to their beach restaurant where were looked after by Avi, Jeawon & Manoj. Nothing was too much of a big ask as I fell in love with the coconut café’s noodles and they would make a visit for me to collect them so I could have them while the kids and my husband had food off their menu. Service was always with a smile and some funny jokes and honestly they made us feel so welcome and you really felt lucky to be there. A little bonus was a cheeky game of bingo on some of the days, which was always fun. Now for my biggest thank you is to the main restaurant in Sugar beach. Santoo manages the most wonderful staff. With some that I will be so happy to meet again one day I hope. VIMALA looked after us like we were her family. She would call us to see if the kitchen could make anything special to keep our fussy kids fed well at dinner. She just went out of her way to always look after us, her and her side kick Jino made our holiday extra special 😊. I went back to find Vimala on our last day to thank her for everything, but sadly she was on leave. I hope she gets to read this as she is a little treasure at Sugar Beach and I can not thank her enough. All the chefs cooking at the live stations and in the kitchen (who came out to speak to guests) were brilliant, Somrah makes his job look so much fun (even when behind a hot plate or fryer) always so happy and engaging. Also I am currently withdrawing from my daily Nann bread cooked by Vigesesh, with no rolling pin in sight, he created perfect naans which created a bit of a queue around busy sitting times! But they were worth the tiny wait! They were highly addictive! There was so much food on offer, I have been to some amazing hotels in the emirates, and I have been to some extensive buffets, but at Sugar beach, this was the offering daily. The choices were tremendous, and it was very difficult to leave without trying all of the dishes on offer. We ended up visiting the kids club a few times and met with Shirley who had been working there for around 28 years. She and her colleagues were so good with the children there, our kids loved it, although we didn’t get a chance to leave them there, I wouldn’t think twice once ours are a little bit older. We stayed and took part in some of the activities, and everything is so well thought out. There were full timetables of activities daily. We particularly liked the t shirt making, our kids got to make their own souvenirs which was nice. The only regret I have is not making it known to staff earlier (even though I did email a few times ahead) that I was a travel agent as I wanted to make the most out of the resort so that I could report back to colleagues and clients on all the offerings available at the hotel. On the last day I found out about the perfume workshop where you can make your own scent, also a few other bits I wasn’t aware of. I would have liked to experience those. But overall it was a 10/10 stay I cant wait to recommend this hotel and La Pirogue to anyone that will listen to me go on and on about how lovely our stay was. Thank you all at Sugar Beach. Read less

Sugar Beach is a premium choice in the South West and located on a long lovely beach. The entrance is grand and has been designed in a colonial style. The rooms are nice, however it's a bit strange entering the room through the bathroom. The bathroom is a clean place and coming through it to enter the room is a weird feeling. The resort attracts lots of families and can have quite a busy feel to it even in the low season. Whilst an enjoyable stay, there were a few things that would make it a better experience: The sun loungers weren't really upkept on the beach. It would be nice if they were reset each evening and ensure they were all in good condition with cushions. The towel rental system was peculiar. We apparently needed to bring a special towel card to get them, however we were only asked for this once in a week. Not sure why that system is in place. The pools are all freezing cold. I don't know why they aren't solar heated in winter. Nobody was in the pools and even on the warmest winter day, it's not hot enough to be entering the chilly water which is a shame. The cocktail (Pina Colada) at the pool was utterly revolting. It tasted like it was made by a teenager who had just experienced alcohol for the first time and had just dumped a heap of alcohol and some ice in a cup. I appreciate the staff removed the cost of this at the end. Finally, the food experience. This was quite an inconsistent experience. The first night was Indian buffet and it was by far, the best indian food we have ever had (and we've had a lot). It was fresh, full of flavour and we stuffed ourselves silly. Unfortunately after that, the food remained a disappointment. Breakfast consistently had stale tasting food - hashbrowns were chewy every day, bacon was inedible, never any toppings on the yoghurt bowls, some days no bowls at the porridge station. Always hunting for a spoon as they were never included in the table ware. The coffees were from a cheap machine and tasted accordingly. The themed buffets every other night were dull and lacking in variety. International and asian night were especially disappointing. It appears a lot of effort goes into making it look good but when it actually comes to variety and flavour, its quite lacking. Our biggest annoyance however was the drinks situation. You can get water anywhere in the resort at any time of day UNLESS it's dinner, in which case they hold the water tap hostage and never bother to mention the still water they offer at the table comes at a charge!!! This was not the case at any other resort we stayed at in Mauritius and what is most frustrating is it's never explained. We simply got a $17AUD bill at the end for some waters which we were not expecting. Another night we decided to bring our own water bottles and were then threatened that we would be charged 1000 rupees if we did it again. Really quite unprofessional. There is a sommelier roaming the tables but this is quite out of touch - the place is full of casual families at a buffet, nobody wants or needs sommelier. Instead of wasting money on a sommelier, more effort should be put into providing regular drinks service and not charging for water. It may be how they wish to recoup costs for providing half board options, but this seems quite out of touch when they offer glamourous and unnecessary services like perfume making and croquet sessions but won't fork out for some tap water for guests at dinner. Overall, I probably wouldn't return to Sugar Beach, as for the price there are more premium offerings available in Tamarin and further south in Le Morne. If you want a Fiji style all inclusive family friendly resort, this is probably a good choice for you. Read less
