The Ravenala Attitude

Mauritius, Indian Ocean

The hotel

All-suite and all-inclusive, the Ravenala Attitude is styled in contemporary, colonial and tropical hues. With an open-plan, no boundaries design, the restaurants and bars flow seemlessly towards the pool, gardens and beach beyond. But it’s not all about appearances — it goes deeper. Its ‘Culinary Voyage’ takes you from Asia to Italy in 10 restaurants, eight of which you can sample as part of your All Inclusive package. You can tuck into 'Granmamas' Mauritian fare at Kot Nou, street-food takeaways on the beach at Taba-J, and enjoy the romance of the floating Riviera restaurant. The kids' clubs provide various fun activities, whilst the Sport Village and Boat House offer endless diversions, from kayaking along Rivière Citron to riverbank yoga and water-skiing off the beach. And the hotel's ‘Otentik’ concept gives you a true insight into Mauritius, in cookery classes, local music, a self-guided tours app, and a weekly ‘Otentik Bazar’, with all profits from the ‘made in Mauritius’ goodies going to the craftspeople. You can even dine on ‘Otentik Dinners’ with locals in their homes. This charming resort is great for families, with large rooms and a range of activities, whilst couples will love staying in the Executive Beachfront Adult Suites in the adults-only section.

Check in was fast though relaxed and pleasant. Room was large (v large bed too) and had everything we needed with bath and huge shower. If you want visits from the “turn down team” or loads of free soaps, shampoo, sewing kits etc. this is not the place for you but if you are happy with a great room then OK. Assuming you are all inclusive (Beer is £10 if you are not) you have free access to six excellent a la carte restaurants all of them very good plus the buffet. The wine in most all inclusives I have been to is poor however here I can recommend the South African Cabernet Sauvignon which is part of your package and is very good. A good tip is to book all the restaurants as soon as you can. If you change your mind you can easily cancel. Ravenala has the most visible food and beverages manager I have ever seen walking around constantly watching, checking customers were happy and generally trying to solve any problems. No probs getting sun beds on the beach or by the pool unless you are fussy about exactly where you sit. There is some shingle on the beach but if you pick your way you can get in the water in bare feet without problems. As a keen (though poor) sea swimmer I would have liked to have seen the rope around the swimming area a bit further out to sea as at low tide you can bang your toes on the sea bed. Three enormous pools as well if you prefer and we never had a problem getting a sun bed though not always exactly where you wanted. Entertainment was generally good Fire eaters, traditional dance routines and groups. The groups were usually musically very good though in some cases a bit dated. I remember Harry Belafonte very well but can cope with more up to date stuff. Generally speaking the staff were lovely and although they were happy to accept a tip they never seemed to be expecting one. Daniel and “Thierry” the games guys at the beach were great fun and tried to get people involved in the various activities but didn’t pressurise. We loved the beach bar to watch the sun go down (and the beer of course) . One of the things that we thought would help is to have the same group of bar staff on at the same time of day. The bar staff changed constantly so you couldn’t build up any relationship. The people who served drinks on the beach were there all the time and were a joy. They almost seemed disappointed when you didn’t want a drink. My wife had some massages which she said were great and she loved the relaxing garden area All in all we had a great time at the Ravenala and I definitely recommend it. One tip we looked on the internet to see what sort of plugs and it said Mauritius uses 13amp UK style however the Ravenala has the two pin continental style plugs so Brits you need to take an adaptor Read less

I reckon they should atleast serve some chicken.. there was limited choice of food.. the day use package was not convenient for the amount of money we paid towards the all inclusive meal.. however the cocktail was changed when i mentioned it to one of the staffs, he was really polite.. it is an amazing place but i would be very appreciated if you could sort something out regarding the food.. I would not recommend the hotel if you are going there to enjoy the food, it is better for the atmosphere to chill out.. Read less
