Tropical Attitude

Mauritius, Indian Ocean

The hotel

Those torn between ‘contemporary chic’ and ‘utterly authentic’ needn’t choose – after a radical revamp, Tropical Attitude promises both. All bold geometric design and luxe natural touches, this adults-only retreat gives grownups that boutique hotel feel and a genuine Mauritian experience. It starts with its location – on a lagoon, just a free shuttle boat ride from beautiful Ile aux Cerfs, it’s near the traditional fishing village of Trou d’Eau Douce. And it continues with its attitude – with real Mauritius found everywhere from its spa treatments to its experiences, including cookery lessons, a weekly ‘Made in Mauritius’ market, and home-cooked dinners at local families’ homes. Dining at Tropical Attitude is equally authentic, whether you’re at its intimate Kot Nou restaurant (which seats just 20 guests), tucking into Mauritian street food from TABA-j, or taking one of its picnic baskets over to Ile aux Cerfs.

We have just returned from a 10night stay at the tropical attitude hotel. Upon arrival we had our bags collected and stored until our room was ready which reception sorted for us earlier than expected. The room was clean and had all the essentials, it was kept clean everyday and we had some great animals made out of towels on the bed each day, drinks in the mini bar are restocked everyday and are free although the food items are not free. On our 1st day there was a problem with the water in the area so we struggled for a shower until the next day, no fault of the hotel but we wasn't informed of this issue upon arrival. The location of the hotel is perfect, right next to a small beach area with views looking at the ocean. We was a little concerned about the weather reports we read before we started our holiday as it just said rain all the time, it was an average of 30°c every day and a few scattered 2min showers the occasional day which was a relief. The alcohol drink selection for us was a little poor, purely down to the quality of the spirits etc but we managed to find something we both liked and stuck to that for the duration. We did a lot of research before booking the tropical attitude hotel as we wanted a relaxed atmosphere with lovely food. The 1st night we booked a table at the kot nou restaurant in the grounds of the hotel, the menu selection sounded ok so we picked things that sounded tasty on the menu, we only had the one meal there after the 1st night purely as it was quite disappointing for us. The main restaurant is clean but there didn't seem to be any order at all, people getting food and having nowhere to sit & really slow drink service I found it quicker to go to the bar myself, the food was very bland for us and quite repetitive. There was a buffet selection on every other night and A la carte menu on the other nights, I am really not a fussy eater usually but I struggled to find a good plate of food for our duration apart from breakfast which was always good, we mainly filled up with the bread and butter in the end, it seemed quite mass catered food with strange combinations and not much flavour. This really really put a big downer on our stay as the reviews raved about the quality of food, we later found out most of the food reviews were written by one of the kitchen staff "vikesh" he was going around various tables asking for there mobiles and writing the reviews himself! There is no wonder the restaurant and himself are mentioned so much in the reviews as it's all written in house by the staff. Overall our stay was relaxed and peaceful, the entertainment was OK on a few nights but the food really let it down for us. With it being quite far from any good restaurants you are quite limited to what you can eat, i was offered something else not on the menu to my personal choice, I opted for a beef curry with rice it was OK but really nothing to get excited about. The stay was nice and the resort is also good but the only problem is that they dont provide adequate toiletries unlike other hotels. Chef Vikash was very cooperative and made us really delicious Indian vegetarian cuisine. Happy Stay.!

My wife and I have just returned from a great holiday there. The location is excellent with views over the bay. The facilities are excellent and the staff are friendly and helpful without being in your face. We enjoyed the cookery lesson with Eric the head chef and I had a nice facial at the spa. There were some boat trips that we never got round to doing. We went all-inclusive and I think it’s a good deal. I’m already missing my afternoon pina coladas. Mauritius is a wonderful island and we hope to return some day. The only minor negative is that the pool had only a ladder whereas I think steps would be helpful for those who are less mobile.
