Veranda Grand Baie

Mauritius, Indian Ocean

The hotel

Overlooking the beautiful bay of Grand Baie, the Veranda Grand Baie Hotel & Spa is bursting with Creole charm and is ideally located for exploring the nearby restaurants, bars and shops. All rooms have been sumptuously decorated with cool, soothing tones and are dotted amongst the grounds. Enjoy a pre-dinner drink from your private balcony or terrace, admiring stunning views of the surrounding gardens or swimming pool. Water sports are, of course, in ample supply. Windsurfing, kayaking, snorkelling and pedal boats are complimentary, as is a glass-bottom boat ride so you can admire life below the waves without getting wet! Pay a bit extra and you can join PADI qualified instructors on diving expeditions and water-ski to your heart’s content. Whilst parents are lounging beside one of two pools, the Timomo Kids Club will keep little ones entertained with a whole range of exciting activities. There’s also the delightful Seven Colours Wellness Spa should a spot of pampering, well-deserved no doubt, appeal. Le Mon Plaisir serves a delicious range of local dishes as well as more international favourites. Belle Vue Restaurant, set right beside the ocean, is more suited to special occasions, taking you on a culinary journey you’ll never forget.

I have given a 3 star rating which is an overall opinion , however there are parts of this Hotel that deserve 5 and parts that deserve less than 3. First the good : The majority of the staff are super friendly , kind and efficient. Not really fair to pick out names but a special mention to: *Sandhya , who looked after our room , lovely friendly smiley person who could not do enougth to be kind and helpful. *Stefan , Julia and all of the Entertainments team , thanks you for your friendliness and help. *The reception team , kind and always pleasant and helpful. *Smiley Girl at the Breakfast Buffet fruit bar--thankyou for your lovely smile. *Great location Now the not so good: *The bar staff who told me that if I add a gratuity to the bar bill the Hotel keeps it and the staff dont get it therefore TIP by cash. I later learnt that the staff do get a share of the gratuity. *Requested to pay the Bar by cash to get a discount also does not seem ethical. * The hotel is in need of decorating and refurbishment , very tatty in places. *Room Towels are grey and old *Sunbeds are worn and dangerous *The manager struts around the hotel not engaging with Guests,I said gooodmorning to him on 3 occasions and got a good stuck up lgnoring for my efforts, I didn't bother after that. * On your day of departure when your account is closed some of the staff suddenly see you as invisible. During our stay we went to Garnd Gaube and had a look around the Veranda Hotel situated there.I understand that it is a 4 star Hotel but the difference in condition is remarkable. Read less

My wife and I recently stayed for 10 days for our honeymoon/1st year anniversary. Regardless of what the manager or who ever replies to this says, take it with a pinch of salt as it would be a load of Bull!!!! Firstly we were not upgraded for our room and if we were I would hate to think what the other room would be like as it was very basic, ground floor with a view of some trees and the games room window. Buffet food was not great, lamb always overcooked, other meats sometimes overcooked. Pasta everyday and the bolognase sauce was more watery than sauce. Their themed events could have a much better decoration, as it was effortless. Mauritian night hardly had any traditional mauritian food and oceanic night hardly had any seafood. Breakfast buffet was better. Admittedly, they did fold our towels into a swan shape and later in the evening a lobster, and did sing a song "happy birthday and joyeux anniversaire" for our anniversary dinner as well as a small cake. However there was no bottle of wine or any beverages given to us. We were given 2 hotel t-shirts but a mention of other "freebees" were not true and nonexistent. We bought our own cocktails despite other couples being given free cocktails for their birthdays. Level of service seemed to drop after we completed our survey questionnaire after 7 days and we were even forgotten about for a drink with our dinner until we had finished our meal, at least that saved us some money. Tea and coffee was supposed to be free inour rooms yet stated on the drinks menu for the room that there was a fee. Water in the room was not complimentary which is the first hotel I have ever been in worldwide that has not offered complimentary water when they say not to drink or swallow the local water. Prices I feel were extortionate!! $8 for 1 cup of tea!! Overall it was my first visit to Mauritius and it is a beautiful country, luckily my wife's family lived there and was able to show me traditional local cuisine and entertainment as you won't get a true reflection of it at the hotel. We saved a whole year for this holiday to celebrate and have been left totally disappointed and wished we had chosen a different hotel. Read less

This hotel is right on the beach at a quiet end of Grand Baie. Great pools and beach seating. Next to two good public beaches. The food and wine could have been better but the breakfast was tasty and varied. The rooms are spacious and really comfortable opening on to green garden space.
