Zilwa Attitude

Mauritius, Indian Ocean

The hotel

Not just a hotel, Zilwa Attitude is more of an experience, embracing the life of the islanders. With a relaxed village feel, it is packed with authentic Mauritian experiences so you’ll truly feel like one of the natives after a week or two here. In a beautiful location, overlooking endless stretches of sandy beach and with stunning views of no less than five islands, it is a slice of heaven. Just a few minutes away by boat, or a short paddle, is Grand Zil where you can while away a few hours on a lounger and perhaps tuck in to a barbecue lunch — or enjoy a rejuvenating massage on the smaller Ti Zil. Rooms are inspired from traditional seaside bungalows and are contemporary in design but rustic too with rough white-washed walls and brushed cement floors. Embracing bright colours, there's a choice of room types, as well as family rooms, apartments and suites by the sea. Book a treatment at the world-class spa and take some time to chill on a day bed in the relaxation garden whilst listening to the twitter of birdsong. As you kick back, the little ones will be kept happy at the kids' club, with a fun garden, a games room and a large boat to explore and escape the sun ! There are seven restaurants at Zilwa, offering cuisines from European to Creole, Indian and Asian, and the All Inclusive dine-around experience means you can discover wonderful varied meals each day of your stay.

The few staff were going out of their way in order to have us enjoy our vacation even though limited due to Government regulations. The food was outstanding especially the last few days of our stay. We were very impressed with the dedication of the chefs on site. Big thank you to the entire team that was totally committed to offer a welcoming ambience and excellent service. Although having been some of the last guests hindering the Resort to close we always felt very welcome. Read less

We visited the Zilwa Attitude for two weeks in early March 2020. We arrived on a Saturday evening. The check-in procedure was relatively quick. We were then shown to our room, while the bags were taken seperately to the room. The grounds of the hotel are lovely and well kept. The beach area is stunning, with great views over the reef to Gunners island, which is the island you see in most of the pictures from the hotel online. The sea area itself is quite shallow, with minimal visibility. If you're interested in snorkelling, the hotel run boats to the edge of the reef where the snorkelling experience is much better. The hotel is located in a small village. There is not much that you can do on foot locally outside of the hotel, except visit the local convenience shop. You either need to take a taxi or get the bus to Grand Baie. There is a selection of restaurants on site, 4 a la carte, and 1 buffet restaurant. We found the food in all the a la carte restaurants to be a much higher standard than the buffet restaurant. The a la carte restaurants need to be pre-booked, which i'd advise to do in block bookings, as they get quite full. Personally I found the Tadka Indian restaurant to be my favourite. The bar areas are good, and the staff all work so hard, especially Niraj down at the beach bar. It's really impressive. The all inclusive package includes for local drinks from the island. All of which we tried were pretty good. We found our room itself relatively basic for the price paid for the trip. All the essentials that you require are there, but there isn't much other than the essentials that you'd find in most standard hotel rooms. Unfortunately the 2nd week of our trip was affected by the coronavirus situation. Due to the local governments advise, the hotel had to operate on a lockdown footing. During the 2nd week, each day more and more parts of the hotel were starting to be shutdown systematically. I appreciate that the hotel were only doing what they were being told to do by the government, but I feel that what was happening could have been communicated to the guests better. It was mainly communicated on a notice board near the breakfast area. I think letters posted to each room would have been better. I don't know if we'd return to Mauritius, but it's certainly a trip we will remember for a variety of reasons. Read less

The staff exceedingly helpful (apart from the odd waitress or two who didn’t seem to have the “Zilwa” attitude!) reception staff and porters were very helpful, friendly and generally brilliant, as were the bar staff. We had a great holiday. Our room was quite a walk from the main hub, not a problem to us as the grounds are stunningly well kept, but could be an issue if you have mobility issues. The meals were very enjoyable, although replenishment at breakfast could be a little slow. The Lor Disab restaurant was excellent on every level. We went on lockdown, due to the arrival of covid 19 on the island, for our last two days, the staff were still amazing and although services were limited, we still had a good time. The room was quite “eco” in its features, but nicely done and spotlessly clean. Thank you Zilwa for a wonderful holiday and for continuing your professionalism and fantastic service in the face of adversity. Read less

We booked very last minute due to our other trip being cancelled, and as just 2 friends and not couples or a family like most in the hotel, the staff made us very welcome and it felt like home for the week!! Highly recommended. The catamaran trip that you pay extra for is definitely worth doing! Best day of the trip and the food was incredible. Read less
