Zilwa Attitude

Mauritius, Indian Ocean

The hotel

Not just a hotel, Zilwa Attitude is more of an experience, embracing the life of the islanders. With a relaxed village feel, it is packed with authentic Mauritian experiences so you’ll truly feel like one of the natives after a week or two here. In a beautiful location, overlooking endless stretches of sandy beach and with stunning views of no less than five islands, it is a slice of heaven. Just a few minutes away by boat, or a short paddle, is Grand Zil where you can while away a few hours on a lounger and perhaps tuck in to a barbecue lunch — or enjoy a rejuvenating massage on the smaller Ti Zil. Rooms are inspired from traditional seaside bungalows and are contemporary in design but rustic too with rough white-washed walls and brushed cement floors. Embracing bright colours, there's a choice of room types, as well as family rooms, apartments and suites by the sea. Book a treatment at the world-class spa and take some time to chill on a day bed in the relaxation garden whilst listening to the twitter of birdsong. As you kick back, the little ones will be kept happy at the kids' club, with a fun garden, a games room and a large boat to explore and escape the sun ! There are seven restaurants at Zilwa, offering cuisines from European to Creole, Indian and Asian, and the All Inclusive dine-around experience means you can discover wonderful varied meals each day of your stay.

Never have I spent longer planning a break before. Whilst planning in a virtual world I seemed to have negotiated half of Mauritius and Seychelles before deciding on Zilwa Attitude. I booked with Virgin Holidays who could not have been more helpful and I really felt I had a good idea of the hotel and the island before I finally booked this weeks holiday. I traveled with my husband and my two boys, aged 4 and 8 years. My criteria included luxury feel, tropical, without malaria, wildlife, activities for the children, snorkeling, swimming, sailing and nonmotorised water sports and a really good kids club. My youngest had a milk allergy so I also wanted somewhere I felt would be able to understand this issue and help where possible. I am writing this a year on, and without a doubt, this is the best holiday we have ever had. The flight was easy and didnt seem that long as it was night flight. With Virgin Holidays we had a private transfer. The time difference isn't all that great so we were awake and ready to go. The transfer took us passed beautiful mountainous landscapes, and that was a great start to our holiday. I am going to list the highlights. Kids club! Amazing, my kids loved it. There seemed to be older children when we arrived but it was mainly 3-6-year-olds the next day. My 4 year old loved it. He was so excited (so much so getting him to have breakfast first was a struggle). There is the most magnificent African boat that has a high-end finish as a kids play den, small grassy play area and sandpit and indoor games and TV room. But my kids were barely in there, and not many of the other children were either. What made it special were ALL the amazing staff. I loved them and so did the boys. They are so calm and enthusiastic at the same time and you could tell they loved their job. The children could opt-in and out of activities and just turn up when they wanted. The trip on a raft to a little island across the lagoon (very shallow you can walk it!) for a treasure hunt was the cutest thing, and so exciting for my four-year-old. The treasure was chocolate, but because my son was allergic to milk he was given a special shell bracelet and he was so delighted. All in all amazing. One evening so my husband and I could have a meal together one of the girls looked after the boys for dinner. I had prearranged their food (more later on that), and they were picked up from our room and taken to the dining hall. I expected that after they would just play at the kids club, but after about a half and an hour we heard them coming across the beach. They had head torches and search lamps and they were being taken on a private night time crab hunt! We watched them go off giggling and chatting and having the time of their lives. We spent a lot of time in the gorgeous pools, there are three/four to choose from. As we were fully inclusive we had full use of the watersports and we kayaked and sailed every day. The lagoon (inside the reef) is like something out Moana and as you sail off towards the island that looks like Matatohy in the distance it couldn't be more idyllic. We also did a trip out to the reef, because you just can't swim in the lagoon. My boys are confident swimmers and have snorkeled since very young, so with float aids on it was a very easy pleasant experience. The reef has suffered coral bleaching as has everywhere I have ever snorkeled in the tropics but there is still plenty to see. We even saw cuttlefish which was really cool. The reef is about a 1k out and for all of it, the seafloor only seems a metre or two deep. The restaurant was excellent and there were lots of choices. It was easiest to eat in the main buffet restaurant and the food was very high quality although we also tried all of them - do that it is worth it. So to my sons milk allergy, before leaving the UK the communication with the hotel was excellent. They recommended bringing his own milk which they said they would keep labeled and in their fridge. When we arrived I had a meeting with the head chef and the pastry chef. They were able to make him his own pancakes and ensured there were rolls without milk for him and instead of cakes and puddings, he got a big platter of fruit every night made especially for him. There has been comments about the room and decor, it. is rustic, that is its design but it is in keeping with the theme of being a local village feel. We were happy with it. We had used some Virgin miles to upgrade our room. So we had a great garden facing ground floor family room. We loved it. We could open the balcony doors and we could go out first thing in the morning and sit on the balcony, see the palm trees on the beach while the kids hunted for African land snails! What else, Spa is fabulous, my 8 years old and my husband had massages together then I went too. It has a lovely outdoor jacuzzi and outside spa rooms. WE loved it and want to save an go back. We had one day with a driver to visit the temple, zoo etc but our big luxury was going on a whale trip - its not as expensive as it seems when you consider you are out all day from 5am, you have a lobster and chicken bbq on the boat and we saw dolphins and apparently we were very lucky as we also saw a family of Sperm Whale - expensive but life changing experience for us all. Zilwa is one of the best hotels I have ever stayed in. It is beautiful with the most gobsmacking view when you arrive and round the corner into the main bar. Staff are friendly and attentive and really care about giving good service. Food is soooo good with such a variety it would be hard to choose a favourite restaurant but if pushed I would pick Siaw. I visited the Spa twice (prices reasonable) while my husband dived with Dodo Divers (prices reasonable) who he rated highly in terms of safety and professionalism. I would recommend taking your own hairdryer as I managed to overheat two of theirs and for some unknown reason the ones they supply have a really short cable. WiFi is excellent and they provide a changing room if you are leaving after checkout time which is 12pm. Will definitely visit Mauritius again and likely look into staying at another Attitude hotel, possibly on East coast so we have covered the whole island. Read less

Lots for the teenagers to do - paddle-boarding, kayaking, gym, snorkeling, table tennis, burgers on the beach, great wifi. Going to the island for the BBQ lunch was a highlight. Our holiday was made by the fantastic staff, sorry we can't mention them all. But especially Visham from the beach bar who realised we enjoyed a cappuccino about half an hour after breakfast and brought them to us automatically. Namrata in the main restaurant who looked after us so well, Rosse from the boat house who took us out on one of the snorkelling trips and was great fun and informative about the surrounding area and Kiara from guest services who happily alleviated our extremely early departure by making sure there would be someone in the restaurant to give us coffee and croissants and a picnic to take on the journey. Their attention to detail turned a great holiday into a fantastic holiday. Cannot recommend highly enough. Read less
