When we stay at a hotel, our standard is - as nice as home, or an amazing experience that we can't get at home. The Fairmont, sadly provides neither. We stayed in "Fairmont Gold" which is supposed to be superior rooms and a concierge-level experience with a lounge for chilling out. We should have known something was up, when we pulled up to the curb at 6pm on a Friday night and were not greeted. My husband put the car in park, opened our trunk, pulled out all of our stuff to the curb and still no one greeted us or asked to help. My husband grabbed all of our stuff and proceeded inside. He passed by two "bellman," who never asked to help him. There were no other guests at the check-in counter, yet still there was no one to help us with our bags and everything of ours (suitcases, garment bags, coats) just strewn about the lobby floor as we checked in. The lobby is amazing - but you don't need to check-in to experience it. The rooms are old and old school. Who has a DVD player in the rooms? The none of the hand-held device charging jacks in the room function. When we asked the front desk for a way to charge our phones at the end of a busy workweek (a normal request) an employee lent us his own personal adapter, so we could plug into the wall. The hallways going to the room are dark, the room is old and bed is not even comfy. We stayed at the Spring-hill suites a few weeks ago and the beds were more comfy. There is a single chair in the corner, but not exactly a comfy place to relax because that is where our luggage was. We came purely for pleasure in the middle of winter and there is nowhere in the room to hang-out in our KING SUITE. The location is great, but I much prefer a longer uber ride and a newer hotel. We were hanging out in the Gold room with friends on the old couches- The janitor decided at that moment at 10:30 pm, to change a lightbulb directly above where we were all hanging out, and had no problem asking us all to move. The place is old and likely once was grand. The bathrooms are so less than average. The furnishings, sheets, towels etc. feel very average. The staff are all sweet. The hotel is VERY - VERY tired. The Fairmont is right in the centre of the city - magnificent entrance and grand old building. Efficient check in, great baggage service and lovely check in staff. The incredibly irritating (but wonderfully named - the marketing company really earned their $$$ here) $30 “Urban Experience Fee” (aka a fee to claw back profit impacted through having to list on third party booking sites but allegedly charged to cover two small bottles of water (complementary in even the most dismal hotels in the world), internet (which is free anyway for Accor Gold members) and $25 Food and Beverage credit (why would anyone think being leveraged as to where they should eat and drink as being a good thing - and does Fairmont really want their guests to associate being ruthlessly gouged with an “urban experience”?)) was refunded at check in without dispute - and things / my general mood improved from that point onwards. I do strongly suggest that Fairmont ignore their lesser competitors and abandon the resort fee concept as no one with half a brain is fooled as to what it really is and it sets a hotel stay off on a very, very bad note - and for me at least it actually discourages rather than encourages spending within the hotel. On a positive note the room (double) was very large and very comfortable with a good view of Boston library. Room lighting was a bit dim and shower over a bath with clammy shower curtain is never great though. Quite a few of the things Fairmont’s typically provide (scales, bathroom amenities) presumably only available on request. Gym reasonable with good selection of workout stations, but odd L shaped room with heating at one end means half of the gym is boiling hot and the other half freezing. Locating the rowing machine in the colder section and addition of more free weights including a bench press station would be good. A gift of Boston toffees really appreciated by the children and bed V comfortable and got a good sleep. Coffee machine in room was an odd quasi pod / filter device that didn’t work properly. But all in all it’s in a great location (Copley plaza nearby good for shopping) and it was a comfy stay! Read less

First impressions weren’t great. Big hotel....big queue to check in....one person behind the counter. Decor is tired and room had a smell of damp. I stayed one night then moved out to The Godfrey which was a bit cheaper and much better modern, clean hotel in a good location.
