The hotel

A luxury hotel in the heart of the city combining modern features with contemporary on-of-a-kind design, the Proper Hotel Santa Monica is a proper treat. The rooftop pool is the only one you’ll find in the area, so nab a sunbed or treat yourself to an alcove for the day for that added relaxation – no need to move, just have your drinks and food delivered to you, they’ll even supply the suncream, you’ll need it on those summer days. The hotel may not be situated on the coastal front, but it positions you in great proximity to bars and restaurants, and the local farmers market which is a must visit. You’ll feel more of a local in this hangout, a step away from the obvious tourist spots. When you do want to visit the beach (who wouldn’t?!), it’s only a short stroll away, or hop on an eLECTRA bike to get you there even quicker. Of course, Santa Monica has plenty of trendy restaurants to visit, but the hotel have got some fantastic offerings of their own, chill out in Palma when you need a break from the hot weather or a late night apertif. Or if you want to soak up those rays with a chilled drink in hand then Calabra offers fantastic poolside views, with a sushi menu available Thursday – Sunday for those sashimi lovers.

Hotel did not disclose a very noisy, disruptive union protest that was scheduled in front of the hotel. It ruined our corporate event, woke our entire staff up at 7:30am the gym is waaaay overcrowded and entirely too small for a hotel that holds itself out as a wellness hotel.

The bar tender for the rooftop bar was extremely rude, unprofessional and slow. Also there was a protest at the property that started at 7am, that was planned and permitted, but the hotel failed to notify anyone. It was so loud taking a call in the room was impossible.

I can’t say enough about the staff at the Proper, super friendly and helpful. There was a brief protest in front of the hotel and they refunded us $200 for the “disturbance” even though there really was none and we never complained. That’s a class act. Also, the food at Calabra is outstanding, some of the best in LA, especially the mezze. The room… Read more

The Santa Monica Proper was the perfect base for our quick trip to Los Angeles. We enjoyed dinner and drinks at Palma, an excellent night sleep on a very comfy bed and complimentary yoga on Sunday morning. The front desk team was very welcoming and attentive to our needs throughout our stay. Highly recommend!

The linens, furniture were great. The soap has a wonderful scent. All and all, a super time was had by all. I recommend eating at the Rooftop restaurant. Bascally same menu but the service is much better there. Put towels on the floor outside of your shower before your shower. It is a weird design that allows the water to go outside the shower. It is a very popular hotel, so, early check in doesn't happen. If you need early access, pop for the extra night. Read less
