ANdAZ West Hollywood

West Hollywood, Los Angeles

Virgin rating

The hotel

As sleek and understated as it appears from its spot on LA’s legendary Sunset Boulevard, the Andaz West Hollywood is actually a prime slab of Rock ‘n’ Roll history that dates back to 1963. Over the years the likes of The Who’s Keith Moon and The Stones’ Keith Richards have sent TVs flying off the (now enclosed) balconies, while Led Zep drummer John Bonham reportedly rode a motorbike up and down the corridors. Thoroughly renovated for the 21st century the Andaz relishes its history, but these days the musical motifs complement the minimally chic décor in boutique-style rooms rather than run rampant. Indeed, there’s a friendly, unpretentious welcome here that extends from the hotel’s enticing eateries to its breathtaking rooftop pool (where, incidentally, Spinal Tap’s end of tour party was filmed). Rock. And. Roll.

The experience here was bad enough that it caused me to remember my TripAdvisor account! The idea that this is a luxury property strains credulity, and Andaz should probably arrange an intervention. This is a period hotel with some period problems including low ceilings and afterthought bathrooms -- which one could forgive if the refurbishment infused the old spaces with new life, but that's just not the case here. The carpeting alone evokes the worst of the motor lodge era, worn out and stained. There were weird stains on the bathroom counters as well, and the bathroom door was creaky and peeling. Water pressure was low. Everything felt dirty. The room HVAC struggled to get the temp below 70 even at night. On either side of the bed there were automated built-in nightlights that flashed to life at the slightest movement, blasting the room with light at all hours. The elevator lobby stunk of sewer gas over the entire stay. The "hydration station" on our floor was broken. The kicker: there are few options for parking in the area and the only option offered by the hotel is the valet. By the time you pay the $65 plus tip for valet and the $32 (plus tax!) junk destination fee you're at an extra $100+ on top of your room rate. An extra hundred per night! Whatever nostalgia one may feel about the bygone era of LA rock glamor, I guarantee you it ain't worth that. Plenty of other options in the area. Read less

We stayed here for a few days before going to San Diego. It’s a city hotel on busy Sunset. Lots of places to eat around but we were busy during the day at The Getty Center I don’t mind staff being casual but there is a line between casual and sloppy. A t-shirt with no shape like you wear at the gym… not a good idea. The Riot House… Read more

Lots of places to eat around but we were busy during the day at The Getty Center I don’t mind staff being casual but there is a line between casual and sloppy. A t-shirt with no shape like you wear at the gym… not a good idea. The Riot House Market/Restaurant/ on the floor the other end from lobby check in. Restaurant has limited hours. We were there early so waited for room but we ordered food at the market. The burger was fabulous and the fries , but the sandwich was forgettable . The room was nothing to write home about. Best thing was the artwork out in the parking area. I went down to order food since there is no room service. I thought the restaurant was in the middle but was not lit . Turned out I was not in the bar/restaurant. Menu hard to see since it’s only candle light . Chicken was good but the Cesar salad just ok. Did not make it to the roof pool and view . I’ve worked high end hotels and more casual . Guess we will find another place next trip to LA Just disappointed after spending time at the Andaz in Maui. Read less

Everything was so nice at this hotel. The views from my hotel and the roof were gorgeous! The staff was so kind and welcoming! It was my first time in West Hollywood and I definitely want to come back some time. The breakfast flatbread was AMAZING btw. I cannot say enough nice things about my experience.

Fantastic service and room. Chris in the bar and Nadia (I think that’s her name) were especially helpful and fun. Comfy bed. Hot shower clean everywhere Could of stayed longer as didn’t get time to try swimming pool but it looked great. Would happily têtu
