The location & the staff make this a stand-out choice. Front Desk manager Ricardo and ski valets Rita and Rene are a joy! Ricardo worked some magic to let us extend our stay when the hotel was almost fully booked, and Rita and Rene greet you with a smile and enthusiasm every morning (plus they almost always remember your gear or name...don't know how they do that in a large hotel). We stayed at the Monache twice this ski season, so obviously we recommend it. You may find a less expensive condo across the street in the village, but my experience is it is tough to get those unless you book well in advance. The Monache has easy access to the slopes via the Village Gondola. Be sure to use the ski valet service (which lets you store gear in a secure area adjacent to the gondola) to avoid having to drag your gear up a very long outdoor stairway. (The hotel is on a hill adjacent to the gondola, so while they are across the street from eachother, it takes a little effort to walk between them, particularly before you acclimate to the altitude!) The hotel restaurant is good, and there are three good restaurants across the street in the Village itself, but vegetarians (as we are) should be aware that choices will be limited. We found Gomez's Mexican restaurant to be our favorite in the area. For those not familiar with Mammoth, you should know that weekends during ski season can be extremely busy. During the week we would ski right onto the lifts. Friday we might have to wait 5 minutes on some of the main feeder chairs, but on Saturday you could wait 40+ minutes! One of our rooms showed a little bit of age (tub finish worn out in a corner, dishwasher had some broken plastic pieces) but nothing major and all was clean. We've stayed in a couple other condos close to this area, but being able to walk to the lifts made this our favorite place.
