Monterey Bay is one of my favorite travel destinations and I return every year for my birthday, having previously lived about half a mile away from this hotel during some of the greatest times of my life. As someone who absolutely adores the whole peninsula down to every last detail, this hotel truly feels like it was designed to be a love letter to Monterey. For that, it’s one of my favorite hotels in the US, as every stay we've had here feels like we're getting the most out of your our vacation between the decor and the amenities. So much of the interior and exterior design details are driven by the beauty of Monterey that I don’t mind being in the room when I would rather be looking at beautiful scenery because the beautiful bay is visible on my balcony and is reflected in the decor throughout my room. I'm a designer myself and if I were teaching a design class, I would use this hotel as a model for taking full advantage of the beauty of the location and bringing these natural nuances inside to create a delightful space. If you are a detail-oriented and design-focused person, you will be delighted while staying here. The location is fabulous for walking around town as well as leaving to go on day trip adventures around the area. We like being able to self-park, as well as easily doing pickups and dropoffs in the roundabout. The only thing this hotel is majorly lacking is a sky-walkway from the rooms to the pool area. It feels rather bizarre going through the lobby and out onto a public walkway in our pool attire to access the pool area on the other side of the plaza. If we had known that the first time, we wouldn’t have been wearing our hotel robes in the lobby! I’m sure it’s likely due to a permitting or structural issue, but it seems like a major oversight as a guest. Be sure to wear some street clothes looking cover-ups to the pool because it requires going out into a public area for a moment. Read less

Booked a partial harbor view room which is advertised as being on the 5th or 6th floors. We were placed on the 3rd floor in a very nice corner room with two balconies. At first it seemed like a great choice as we had great views of the harbor and enjoyed the ocean breeze through both sliders. This quickly soured as the constant noise from traffic going through the tunnel and pedestrians walking to the wharf was very unpleasant. We ended up mostly keeping the sliders closed due to the excessive noise. Not sure if the higher floors would have been better for noise reduction. The location of the hotel is great but most rooms face a very high traffic pedestrian area. Homeless individuals were also very prominent in the courtyard area by the wharf which takes away from the view. Peter B's was very good as the happy hour menu is a good deal. On the day of check out, the ceiling in our bathroom began leaking from the rain. Not a huge deal as we were leaving but still not what I expected for this type of hotel. Housekeeping staff knocked on our door at 10:00am asking us when we were checking out. Again, not a huge deal but the "Do Not Disturb" sign was out and check out wasn't until 11:00am. Overall, the property is very nice and very convenient for access to wharf, cannery row, etc. Not sure the positives outweigh the negatives. Would be hard to roll the dice and book here again, requesting a higher floor room this time. Perhaps a hotel further back from the Wharf would be quieter. Read less

We just went to Portola Hotel and Spa for spring break. Our experience was too bad. The room we checked in has Ants. They changed our room and that room was not clean. Comforter had hair. They changed the bedding. The Elevators are too far from the room. Concierge service is good. They helped immediately. Overall, not satisfied.

Gloria made our stay extra wonderful! She made my 30th birthday, a memorable one by her hospitality. We appreciated how easy it was to get to and from as we made many daily trips to Carmel, Pacific Grove and Big Sur. I do wish parking was a bit easier but very small detail and preference. Overall, we enjoyed our stay especially because of Gloria!
