The hotel

‘The Del’ as the Coronado is known as has been open for business since 1888 and is a designated National Historic Landmark! Indeed, it’s been the backdrop to many a Hollywood movie, including Some Like it Hot starring Marilyn Monroe. The last of California’s stately old seaside hotels, it is a monument to Victorian grandeur with virtually no two rooms alike and a sumptuous wood panelled lobby that has to be seen to be believed. Recent additions include Shore House at The Del, an elevated hotel experience in an extraordinary neighborhood of seaside villas. From an oceanfront pool that blends seamlessly into the horizon, to an inviting living room that flows effortlessly outdoors, Shore House offers an extraordinary sense of place, where family and friends form deep connections in a rare beachside setting. The Del's newest restaurant inside the beautifully restored Laundry building. Dine outside on the lawn and watch the action at the BBQ Pit or gather inside the historic brick building beneath vaulted ceilings and the Laundry's original conveyor system. Pull up a stool at the historic wooden bar from the 1880s for inventive cocktails, beer and wine.

Booked on short notice to get out of the Phoenix heat for a few days while celebrating our anniversary. Decided to check this off our bucket list and very happy we did! Not everything was perfect as they are undergoing major renovation of the original iconic Victorian building. We got a beautiful oceanfront room on 4th floor of The Views. Our view was perfect and we enjoyed sitting on our balcony and taking it all in. Beautiful contemporary relaxing beach decor and the room was large with two small closets and lots of other shelf type storage, large desk area and ample dresser drawers. However, the bathroom was very small and the glass shower door leaked puddles onto the floor (design flaw). Kind of comical too that "The" Del provides really cheap rough TP--seriously?! The resort restaurants and grab-and-go market were quite pricey as in any upscale resort on the ocean. Not that we enjoy paying a high price for a simple grab-and-go breakfast, but...is to be expected and no surprise. The grounds and beach are so nice and the historic lobby (inside and outside on the veranda), vintage photos and artifacts around the hotel and gift shops were lovely. Very easy to walk outside of the resort to eat and shop in the town as well. It would be interesting to stay here again when the Victorian hotel re-do is complete. Read less

I chose to stay in an ocean view cabana at the Hotel Del for our 40th anniversary. It was a disappointment. My reasons: 1. No room service. I chose to stay in an ocean view cabana at the Hotel Del for our 40th anniversary. It was a disappointment. My reasons: 1. No room service. We had intended to have breakfast in our room each morning while enjoying the view together. 2. No soap in the shower. My wife only discovered this when she was already in the shower. 3. No direct link on the room's phone to Housekeeping to address the above problem. 4. One night I went around trying to get a de-caf Irish coffee. One bartender went out of his way to help me. The next night, another bartender told me he couldn't help. I told him about the previous night. The best he could do was to suggest I go to another bar. Same results there. I complained to the front desk and the young lady offered to send down a de-caf pod for the room's Keurig, which was not what I was looking for. 5. We got up for our last morning. Our curtains were open. I looked out and there were construction workers on our cabana patio. Fortunately, no embarrassing moments but the potential was there. It would have been nice to be notified in advance. Cumulatively, it was again a disappointing experience that should have been better, especially since I spent a lot of money to try to have a memorable 40th anniversary. Probably the last time we will stay at the Hotel Del. Read less

My wife and I have been visiting the Del for 40+ years - we met in San Diego and the Del was part of that. We have always loved the Del - This was a very very disappointing trip meant to celebrate our 45th wedding anniversary and introduce our son, our daughter-in-law and 3 granddaughters to the Del. No warning even on check-in that the beaches are closed due to raw sewage - we even talked with the Del about our granddaughters and surfing lessons. We watched one family actually enter the water and county life guards chased them out - they also said no signs or warnings from the Del - they couldn’t believe they were not warned and exposed their family to the filthy water. (if you look carefully the main hotel beach has 2 tiny signs and flags - the Beach Village has neither. The Del says water quality is not their responsibility…. but, also that their customers safety is their highest priority. When we complained strongly, we were promised by Krista Clayton (director of Beach Village) that the Del would provide chairs, towels and an umbrella so we could drive further up the coast to enjoy the ocean - in spite of several reminders - nothing was provided. I think the promise was made to keep us from moving to Del Mar up the coast. (we bought our own chairs in Del Mar and donated them to a family without at the end of the day. Service is seriously off. Machines in the gym are broken. Twice without hot water until boiler was relit - an hour wait. Door locks broke twice in 3 days requiring servicing and again more waiting. The access gate in self-parking garage doesn’t work on a regular basis. Promised turndown service arrived at 9:30 pm one night with insistent loud knocking waking all including 2 year old. Turn down service missed 50% of time. For $3,000+ a day more is expected. The Del does a great job warning about rebuilding the main hotel. Where is the warning about raw sewage issue. While not in their control it should be at least communicated. And where are the work-around solutions - like the promised chairs and towels and perhaps some recommendations? Why are there so many maintenance problems - it is a serious lack of attention to needed maintenance. Hilton should be ashamed. Andy Phelps Read less

The pool area was gorgeous and it was nice sitting by the fire pits throughout our stay. Having a full kitchen was so convenient for making breakfast each morning. We ate dinner at both Serea and Babcock during our stay and both had great food and nice views. Even though the beach was closed during our stay, there was no shortage of things to do at and around the Del. Read less

Our stay at "The Del" was horrible to say the least. If I could give negative stars I certainly would. I came here for a medical conference with MER. Our negative experience started before we even entered the hotel: Matthew, a valet, was curt and advised me that I would be allowed "exactly 20 minutes" to drop my family and our baggage off at the hotel room. The registration lady (Marianne) was also quite short, made us wait for several minutes although she was not helping anyone. I asked her where the registration desk was for my conference and she sighed, opened up her book advising me that she would have to look it up, and was visibly quite bothered by me although I was very nice about asking as I am in general with all people. After she "helped" me with that, I asked her if she could then help register us for our room at which point she was able to help us pretty well actually, however she forgot to tell us how to access wifi and even told us the wrong instructions for that after I asked her. What appeared to be an automated text from her gave the proper password for wifi. On our resort day, we spent some time at the pool and our waitress with large reflective sunglasses was also curt and quite impatient, I felt rushed when she came to "help" me. No smile at all even though I smiled and thanked her for coming over. When leaving the valets were once again rude, when I drove my car up to pick up my wife and 2 small children a valet zoomed past without warning clearly driving at an unsafe speed to the point of almost hitting my car! A cherry on top of a quite miserable stay at "The Del." They really need to retrain everyone to smile, be courteous and nice with everything. Give love, receive love, take note. Read less
