The hotel

‘The Del’ as the Coronado is known as has been open for business since 1888 and is a designated National Historic Landmark! Indeed, it’s been the backdrop to many a Hollywood movie, including Some Like it Hot starring Marilyn Monroe. The last of California’s stately old seaside hotels, it is a monument to Victorian grandeur with virtually no two rooms alike and a sumptuous wood panelled lobby that has to be seen to be believed. Recent additions include Shore House at The Del, an elevated hotel experience in an extraordinary neighborhood of seaside villas. From an oceanfront pool that blends seamlessly into the horizon, to an inviting living room that flows effortlessly outdoors, Shore House offers an extraordinary sense of place, where family and friends form deep connections in a rare beachside setting. The Del's newest restaurant inside the beautifully restored Laundry building. Dine outside on the lawn and watch the action at the BBQ Pit or gather inside the historic brick building beneath vaulted ceilings and the Laundry's original conveyor system. Pull up a stool at the historic wooden bar from the 1880s for inventive cocktails, beer and wine.

I was so excited for my 1st time at this hotel. The staff are nice but very inexperienced. The hotel is sadly very dated. After many day trips to the Hotel del Coronado, my family decided to stay a few nights for Thanksgiving and enjoy the hotel grounds and amenities. We were shocked at the abysmal customer service we received , which started with check in. There was a 20 minute line to check in and only 2 agents at check in. One representative was just for Hilton Honors Gold and Platinum members and refused to help other Hilton honor members waiting in the long line , despite the fact that there were no Gold or Platinum members waiting. When it was finally my turn on line, I was told my room was not ready so I should go enjoy the resort and they would call me when my room was ready. So we left our bags with the bellman who stored them in a tent outside. As a silver Hilton Honors member, I was not even offered a bottle of water. We headed to the beach and scouted out 3 lounge chairs. A beach attendant informed us the lounge chairs were $75 EACH. I showed him that I was staying on property but he said it didn’t matter. I was paying well over $500 per night not including taxes and fees and a beach lounge chair is $75 each? What is the resort fee for??? To make matters worse when I got home , I looked at their website where they offer a beach pass including a lounge chair and umbrella to people not even staying at the resort for $50! It is insulting that I wasn’t offered this deal by the attendant. In addition, there were signs all over the beach warning of a sewage spill and stating that going in the ocean water would result in illness! I was not spending $75 for a lounge chair next to sewage. So we headed over to the pool. The pool is very underwhelming . No ocean view, lots of concrete. By 3:30 pm, I went to check if my room was ready but the check in line was even longer than earlier in the day. I decided to get something to eat on the Sun deck and wait for them to call me. No call came. So for the third time, at about 6pm I headed over to check in. There were lots of unhappy people there waiting in the long line. When it was finally my turn, I was “greeted” by Corrine. I explained I have been waiting all day to be called when my room is ready. She was in a foul mood and insisted they did call. When I asked her to read back the phone number , she had the incorrect phone number. This is strange because I have been a Hilton Honors member for decades and not changed my phone number. Corrine was very unapologetic and snapped that the hotel was short staffed , which was obviously true but not my fault. She then shoved my key at me and told me it would be another 2 hour wait to get my luggage! In addition, when I looked at the key card she gave me, she hadn’t even written my room number on it. When I pointed this out, she was quite nasty in admitting her mistake and begrudgingly gave me my room number. Upon hearing that they had no bell staff available to deliver our bags for at least 2 hours when we had been waiting all day to get into our room, my husband had had enough and walked into the tent and grabbed our luggage rack himself. No one was around to help us or even notice that we took our own luggage out of the tent. This is a security issue and another sign of the serious under staffing issue. While we were trying to figure out what building our room was in, a bellman noticed my husband pushing the cart himself and insisted he would assist us . I wish I got his name because he was the only person in the entire resort interested in customer service. He apologized profusely and said he would have the manager call us. Not surprisingly, I never heard from the manger during my stay or thereafter. On the positive side, our poolside cabana room was nicely renovated and had a nice view. The only issue with the room was that the temperature could not be set below 69 degrees and it was stuffy at night. Although we made the best of our stay and had fun, I do not recommend this hotel and would not return. The hotel was overcrowded and severely understaffed and management was nowhere to be seen. Coronado Island is beautiful. I recommend eating and renting bikes in town and staying at one of the many other hotels and condos on the island. Read less

We spent a week in a beachfront Villa at the Beach Village at the Del, which is part of the historic Hotel Del Coronado. We were very impressed with the hotel and we would definitely stay there again in a heartbeat. We originally wanted a king size bed room at the Beach village, right on the beach on the ground floor so we could have either the nice outdoor fire pit or the hot tub, however these rooms sold out early and a lot of them were being renovated while we were there, so we ended up getting a beach front room on the second floor with two queen sized beds which was ok. The room was great - it was very clean, it had two tvs (one in front of each bed) , a nice big bathroom, a cozy fireplace and a huge wrap around patio with chairs and tables that overlooked the beautiful beach. It was so relaxing to sit on the patio, and watch the ocean and the people strolling on the beach (and maybe even spot a couple of fit Navy Seals running on the beach). There was a lot of construction when we were there both in the Beach Villas as well as the main pool which was out of service but that didn’t bother us. The Beach Village had its own pool and each group of villas also had a small private outdoor hot tub with partial views of the beach. Everything was clean and well organized at the hotel - housekeeping was efficient, the staff was very friendly, and parking was excellent. The main hotel is beautiful as well ! It has that old world charm and ambiance and it is the second largest wooden structure in the USA. Countless notable hotel guests have stayed at The Del, from Thomas Edison and Charlie Chaplin to King Kalakua of Hawaii , Babe Ruth, Katharine Hepburn. Madonna, Cher, Oprah, Brad Pitt and even 12 US presidents. It was also featured in many movies - most famously in Some Like It Hot starring Marilyn Monroe, Jack Lemmon, and Tony Curtis. You can feel and experience the history of this hotel as you walk its halls and look at all the beautiful pictures . It is also said to be one of the most haunted hotels in the US- you can have a ghost tour or just explore on your own at night and see if you can find the resident spirits. The only confusing thing is that the hotel had two entrances, the south entrance and the north entrance (valet pickup at one and valet drop off at the other entrance), which are accessible via two different streets, and it seems most taxis and Ubers and even locals are very confused about this. If you are meeting someone or getting picked up be careful and specify which one it is - and even then you might have to run and traverse the entire hotel to get to the other entrance. I think a little more signage would help - since we got a bit lost the first night when we arrived and was dropped off at the South Entrance by our Uber driver and had to carry our suitcases all the way across the entire hotel to the lobby which is closer to the North Entrance - nonetheless just a minor thing . The food is delicious, and the drinks at the bars are great . It was definitely a memorable stay. Read less

Image of the Tripadvisor rating Underwhelming. Great beach around the hotel.

Impressive hotel grounds but little to do except walk around. The beach around the hotel is wonderful. Coronado island itself is very nice to walk around and to see the skyline of San Diego. Good to cycle around. Parking around the hotel is right .
