Hotel Del Coronado

The hotel

‘The Del’ as the Coronado is known as has been open for business since 1888 and is a designated National Historic Landmark! Indeed, it’s been the backdrop to many a Hollywood movie, including Some Like it Hot starring Marilyn Monroe. The last of California’s stately old seaside hotels, it is a monument to Victorian grandeur with virtually no two rooms alike and a sumptuous wood panelled lobby that has to be seen to be believed. Recent additions include a state-of-the-art spa and signature restaurant, 1500 Ocean, serving sophisticated ‘southland coastal’ cuisine. There’s also the amazing Crown Room with its intensely ornate décor serving the most delicious Sunday brunch – make sure you don’t miss out by booking your table well in advance! Other dining options include Sheerwater with its expansive outdoor dining terraces and the Babcock & Story Bar, named after ‘the Del’s’ visionary founders, where you can enjoy craft beer, signature martinis, premier Californian wines, coffee and light fare. There’s also Eno, a stylish oasis devoted to wine, and wood fired pizza – bound to be a firm favourite with some! If you’ve got kids, you’ll be delighted to discover there are kids clubs with a range of exciting activities to keep them entertained. Even teens have their own lounge with games, pool table and computer games plus there are water sport lessons for ages 6 and over and teen spa treatments! Whilst they’re busy having fun, parents can enjoy a well earned rest, lazing on that gorgeous beach perhaps, relaxing by the pool or simply admiring the splendid surrounds of one of America’s top holiday resorts.

Over the past 3+ years we've tried to have a successful stay at the Del, for birthdays or anniversaries. And each time, we've left early due to the poor accommodations. Pre-renovation in the Victorian building, was a total disaster. A 3 night stay turned into checking at @ 5AM the first morning. Mid renovation, again in the Victorian building was a better room, but the bed was still the same issue we had the previous time. Checked out @ 7am the first morning instead of staying through the next night. Post renovation, stayed in the Views towers. Really nice room. But the bed was still a poor variety for such a nice place. Picture concrete bricks on springs, with padding. Hotel staff noted that it is a common complaint. Yet nothing has changed. Parking is a disaster for anyone. If you go, pay the extra and get valet to save yourself the grief. The handicap parking is on the north side of the building, entirely opposite of the Views towers. We have tried, and the the guest services have tried to make it work. But guest services has no say in the beds on the property. Bottom line, we are done with the Del. After so many years, all of the goodwill is exhausted. Not about to take another chance. Hilton will not miss us. They will fill the place with those willing to pay heavily and enjoy doing it. Oh and the Hilton app. Aside from the digital key, it is lacking sorely. Read less

I always used to love coming here in the past , that means 10 + years ago. So much has changed some for the better some not. The restaurants have wonderful food but the personal service is gone. If your key does work after a day or two, make sure you bring your birth certificate and passport with you to prove who you are. If you don’t mind paying $48 for two cocktails your in the right place. My favorite was the $12 ice cream cone. It’s a beautiful place to stay, but bring some snacks your own drinks and make sure you don’t need any personal service. The maids were great and the service personnel in the restaurants were wonderful. The front desk not so much. Read less

Hotel Del Coronado is located right on the beach. Hotel Del Coronado is located right on the beach. It’s an iconic hotel with a lot of history and is the oldest wooden hotel in the U.S. The hotel room is nice with a King bed, fridge, big TV, drawer & closet space, a couch, a very small desk, and a coffee machine. The bathroom has a shower but no bath. The restaurants on site all have amazing food with gorgeous views of the water. Sheerwater has some of the best breakfast food I’ve ever had. Serea has some of the best grilled octopus I’ve ever had (open for dinner). There’s also a turf area between the restaurants and water that acts as a small park where kids and dogs can play. I was surprised to see how dog friendly this hotel is and would have brought my dog if I had known! The pools and hot tubs were very large. The gym is amazing with tons of treadmills, bikes, kettle balls, jump rope, and so much more. They also have spin class on the water at 7:30 AM. Some days there is also outdoor yoga overlooking the water. One thing I found strange was the smog that was more heavy in the morning but lasted throughout the day. Our Uber driver told us it was from how humid it was in the summer (versus pollution). However, the water was polluted some days. Someone measured it and hotel guests were advised to not go in for a day. The employee said the test was only done once a day and was highly sensitive and that even sea gull poop could cause it (not sure if true). The beach is very nice and you can actually see specks of gold in the sand. The water temperature is cooler like than of New York water. We are going to take a surfing lesson on site, and you can also rent surf or boogie boards on site. There is a medium-sized town area with great restaurants and ice cream shops such as STAKE, Brigantine, and Moo Time Creamery. One con is that there were naval planes going above the hotel and were really loud, even at 9 PM at night. All in all, the hotel is great and I recommend it if you’re going to be in San Diego. However, I’d rather go to a tropical island like Aruba where the water is warmer and that doesn’t have the naval planes going overhead. Read less
