The hotel

After a multi million dollar renovation, the Zephyr has been transformed into a modern, quirky hotel with a nautical theme and laidback vibe. In the heart of Fisherman’s Wharf, you can walk to PIER 39 and Ghirardelli Square (did someone say chocolate?) or jump on a cable car to explore further. Hidden at the back of the hotel is Fire & Brew, a casual restaurant with a sociable atmosphere. There are lots of dining options close by too — grab a clam chowder bread bowl or head to Chinatown for delicious dim sum. When you're done sightseeing for the day, your hotel room offers a welcome oasis from a city that seemingly never sleeps!

We had an upgraded room with a fantastic view of Alcatraz. The room itself was lovely, however the bathroom was terrible! You could literally be washing your hands sat on the loo and cleaning your feet in the shower, it was THAT small. All very clean and working. However when paying a lot extra for a room your would expect a half decent bathroom big enough for two normal sized humans! I fed this back to the Hotel with no response. The lessor priced rooms had much bigger bathrooms. We were right next to a noisy lift as well. Very disappointing! Read less

I called to ensure we would have the connecting rooms I asked for, and was assured they were. On checking I was told ocean view rooms don't connect, but we were adjacent. Fortunately, the walls are so thin I could easily hear my kids in the adjacent room. We paid quite a bit extra to have two ocean view rooms. The views would be great if they only washed the window! It must not have been washed since the hotel was last renovated. The website said cafe on-site, and shows a nice video. There is no on-site food or drink. There is an IHOP around the block. There is no valet parking, though they still have that section of the garage closed off (with no cars). The check-in staff seems they would rather be browsing Instagram than helping guests. Beds sold said two queens, but were full sized. The games and s'mores were a hit. Read less

Although we did encounter a coyote on Powell. Crazy right? Easy walk to hornblowers for a trip to Alcatraz ( reservations required). Starbucks around the corner although there is a in room kierig machine. Would definitely stay here again. Read less

First of all getting to the hotel we needed to pay an extra $300 (read fine print)justo to park there then getting to our room it was nothing like the pictures. Bathroom was dirty I had to clean it before I let my kids in the tub, walls of bathroom were splattered with toothpaste and water drops.and curtains were put together with duct tape. Doors look like they just splattered some paint on them. The queen beds were more like full size we barely fit also a stay for 4 people should have 4 towels and only had 3 had to ask for one extra towel. Quiet time is at 9 pm, walls are paper thin and you can hear everything next door. Our last night there my kids were laughing at a tv show at 9:40 and the security guard came to our door and told us to shut up or we would get kicked out of the hotel. I advised I have a child with autism and he can get kind of loud. We shut of the tv and then 5 min later I get a call from the manager that we had insulted the security guard and that if he heard another noise from our room we would get kicked out by the police. I have never been so insulted in my life to be called a liar and to have the security guard lie about the situation. Management also seemed a bit racist because I’m Hispanic. I was in line to get my keys. Are working again the cons day of our stay and the lady in front of me lost hers. They asked her for her room number and gave her another one. I explained mine just stopped working and they asked me like 20 questions about my reservation my ID and I still had to call my Husband since he was the primary on the reservation to activate my key card. I guess these days you have to record everything for people to believe you. Here are some pictures and you be the judge. Never again and I advise don’t stay here if you’re planning on it. Read less

What's good: We recently stayed for 3 nights, as part of a big American road trip. This hotel did what we needed it to - smores and table tennis table were a hit with our 12-year-old. The rooms are decent sized (2 x Queen for us), well-appointed bathrooms, and the common areas were pleasant. The hotel is in a good location for tourists, as close to the pier for Alcatraz boats, hop-on-hop-off bus tours and at one end of one of the classic cable-car lines (Powell St). (Though be warned - Fisherman's Wharf is like being in Leicester Square in London or Times Square in New York: a bit grubby and packed with tourists). Not so good: The concierge was bizarre. When I asked if she could book us a couple of restaurants on Saturday and Sunday, she said there was no point as she didn't want to "frighten" me, but the whole city's already booked out because it was the San Francisco marathan that weekend. She gave me a card that had a couple of restaurants on Pier 39, that she said would offer us discounts. Her advice was to choose one of these "and then we can talk". This made my husband feel like she is on some sort of kick-back from these restaurants, which were not what we wanted at all, being loud chain-type restaurants. And what was equally strange was when I searched my Lonely Planet Guide for restaurant recommendations, I found several I liked and they all in fact had availability that weekend. Srange advice - veyr unimaginative and unhelpful, Read less
