The hotel

If you like historic charm and classic character but want modern high-tech touches too, the Mark Hopkins may hit the spot. The hotel is pretty central too, so you’ll be close to many of the city's hotspots. Be sure to pop up to the 19th floor lounge for a sunset cocktail or a nightcap, as you gaze out over the skyline, bay and Golden Gate Bridge. The lounge has a dance floor and live music on some nights, so you may stay longer than you plan to.

I totally understand while it would not make sense to make big capital investments in a SF hotel right now but the Mark Hopkins is really in sad shape. Everything from the rooms, to the hallways, public spaces etc. needs a facelift. Even the vaunted Top of the Mark looks like a bar in a 2nd rate hotel in a 3rd tier US city at this point. I wish I had booked the Fairmont next door instead, it was only slightly more expensive. Read less

Valet was ultra friendly and polite at both arrival and departure. Maria was also very helpful at the front desk. Everyone from housekeeping during our stay was also great, greeted me with a smile every time I crossed path with them. Staff overall made my my stay feel very welcomed and would definitely come back. Thank you!

I had a very bad experience in this hotel. I was there for a wedding at the rate established by sales dept. As I was searching for directions to hotel I came across a rate that was $50.00 less per night. Upon arriving at the hotel they would not match the price that I found on their sight. They supposedly gave me an upgraded room, if you want to call it that. The room smelled like body odor, the carpeting was dirty and smelly. One of my friends told me before going there that the hotel is tired, and I could not agree more. I would say that the views are pretty however there is not much around there and hard to get to. The hotel is a bit dated but I would stay here again because of the staff. I had a hard time getting my reservation to show up (still doesn’t in IHG so I’m worried I won’t get points) but Miguel and Issa were awesome and really helpful, patient and kind. I’d come back just because of the staff.

The hotel is in desperate need of renovations. I've recently stayed at the Willard Washington D.C (interncontintenal) - another hotel with a lot of history which is old, but is in a different league decor and quality wise compared to the Mark Hopkins. The hotel being on the top of a hill gives you the chance to walk quite a lot.. but it provides really impressive views. I'm a IHG Diamond and recieved an upgrade (not that the room was at a level you'd expect, quite worn and dated). I also recieve club lounge access due to my status, but this is a separate area of the nob hill restaurant where they have some snacks out and the fridge which was open for most of the day. For breakfast (diamond perk) it was easy to select whatever we wanted and the credit was applied to the bill. There was an avaition convention which was quite annoying as they were constantly flooding into the lobby. The staff were really good - friendly, helpful and welcoming. They are being let down by the quality of the rooms/hotel - it needs investment. Tip - there is a water machine and vending machine you can fill water bottles with located within the musuem area. Saves paying 6 dollars for a small glass bottle of water. Read less
